The search begins!!

Today I thought I was going back to Słupca to talk again with Danusia about family connections but it didn't work out. Instead I started the search for relatives on my fathers side of my family. I can't believe I didn't think to write down all Danusia was saying about family connections when we were in Słupca.

I was able to find the arrival record of my grandmother, Zofia Pierzchała, who went to America on November 16, 1909, from the Ellis Island website. She was born in Tarnów, close to the birthplace of my grandfather. She was 18 years old when she left Poland to live with her sister in Chicago. She traveled on the ship Kaiser Wilhelm II from the port of Bremen, Germany. She also had a brother, Franciszak, who lived in Tarnów.

From an acquaintance of this blog I received a phone book list, with street names, of Piekarczyks who live in the area of my grandfathers birth. There are 41 listings and I have written a letter to all of them telling them who I am and that I am looking for relatives. Maybe one of them will respond.

We saw our friend Zbyszek and talked with him for two hours.

Yes, today we are very happy. I received a call asking Joan and I to come to the immigration office today. The decision on whether or not to give us permanent resident status had already been made.

We arrived and were greeted by our "angel", Katarzyna. She had a big smile on her face and we knew the answer. She said she had never seen any application go through the system so quickly. The director who reviewed the interview application was impressed with the story of my search for family in Poland and the amount of work I had put into it. The fact that I was able to tell them, in Polish, about the history of Poland, it customs and traditions was also helpful. Guess all of my studying last week paid off. My permanent residency status was approved based on the Polish constitution. It says that a person of Polish descent who has documented proof of their blood ties to Poland should be given permanent resident status. All those years of finding documents to verify my connection to grandparents, great grandparents and great great grandparents has proven to be more valuable than I imagined when I started my research. This new status decision that is good for the rest of my life as long as I renew it every ten years. Also with this status, I can apply for Polish citizenship after 5 years.

Joan was granted temporary status based on the fact that she is married to me. She will have to apply every two years for a new card.

We have the written decisions in our possession and in two or three weeks we will get our new cards.

The only thing I need to work on now is getting a Polish drivers license butd there is no hurry since I just received my International Drivers License that is good until August 2009.

We are very happy, very happy.

Tak, dzisiaj jesteśmy bardzo szczęśliwi. Otrzymałem rozmowie pytającej Joan i by przyjść do biura imigracji dzisiaj.

Wszystkie te lata odkrycia dokumentów by weryfikować moje połączenie do dziadków, wielcy dziadkowie i wielcy wielcy dziadkowie udowodnili być bardziej wartościowi niż wyobraziłem sobie kiedy zacząłem moje badania.

Mamy napisane decyzje w naszym posiadaniu i w dwu albo trzech tygodniach dostaniemy nasze nowe karty.

Today we went with cousin Cecylia Wiśniewska to Słupca to meet the grandparents of Nora Bekalarek. I know this route now like the back of my hand so we had no problem with arriving at the right place. Nora's father, Norbert was just leaving when we arrived so we were greeted by Nora's mother, Wioletta. We met her once before at Christmas time and it was nice to see her again. In the house were also Nora's sisters, Chiara and Vivien along with their grandfather and grandmother Danusia. These relatives are all from my Rajewsks side of the family.

We were immediately served with pastries, coffee and water while we sat and talked. Danusia is a wealth of information about her side of the family and I listend as hard as I could as she spoke in Polish. I didn't understand everything she said and I will ask her to write everything down for the future.

Norbert returned and we talked about our quest to find a house. He knew of one for sale in Słupca and called to make an arrangement for us to see it later in the evening at 7PM. We did see it but it needed too much remodeling to be considered.

About 3 PM Wioletta prepared obiad for us.

After many conversations we went outside where it was cooler and the converstions continued.

About 7:60 we said our goodbyes, we were invited to Germany, where Danusia lives now.

I have put all the pictures in an album on the left side of the blog.

Dzisiaj poszliśmy z kuzyna Cecylia Wiśniewska do Słupca by spotkać dziadków Nory Bekalarek. Spotkaliśmy ją raz przedtem w czasie Bożym Narodzeniu i to było miłe by zobaczyć ją znowu.

Byliśmy natychmiast obsługiwani z ciasta, kawą i wodą podczas gdy usiedliśmy i powiedzieliśmy.

Norbert wrócił i powiedzieliśmy o naszym poszukiwaniu by znaleźć dom.

Interview

We walked into white room, nothing on the walls, a desk with two seats on one side and two on the other. It has a window but with construction going on outside it would be too loud to open. It was 85 degrees outside and about the same inside. Katarzyna came in with a thick book of all the documents she has collected on our residency case. First she gave us our visa's that will be good until September 19, 2008. They were in the form of a large sticky sheet that she put into our passports. She then told me that the interview would be conducted in the Polish language but if I didn't understand something she would unofficially tell me what it meant. Then she asked me what I remembered about my childhood with my grandparents, what they told me about Poland, why my parents did not continue using the Polish language, what I knew about Polish customs, traditions and history. I know 18 points of Polish history now after studying for the last week but she only asked me if I knew when Independence and Constitution day were. I didn't have to say all that I knew about the history but I don't consider it a waste of time in studying it because now I can talk about it in the Polish language. When the interview was over I signed both sheets of the notes she had taken about the interview after she read them to me. It will still be at least another month before we know the verdict but there is a law in Poland that if you can prove, with documents, your blood ties to Poland it is possible to get a permanent residency card. I think I have more than proved my ties with all of the documentation I have given her. I also showed her the family tree that I have printed and she was impressed with it's size.I think the interview went well and that we will receive the card we are seeking. Time will tell.

We went to the Rynek for a celebratory cup of cold coffee and then to cousin Cecylia's to make plans for our trip tomorrow to Słupca to meet Danusia, the grandmother of Nora. We will also have the chance to meet Nora's mother's sister, Bozenka, another cousin of mine I have not met yet.

Czas opowie.

Poszliśmy do Rynek dla celebracyjnej filiżanki zimnej kawy i wtedy do kuzyna Cecylia by zrobić plany dla naszego jutro podróży do Słupca by spotkać Danusia, babkę Nory. Też będziemy mieć szansę by spotkać Nory matki siostrę, Bozenka, innego kuzyna mojego nie spotkałem jeszcze.

Studying

Tomorrow is the big interview day and I spent the day studying. I think I'm ready.

We got an email from our friend Krystyna from Chicago. She will be coming to Warsaw in September to assess the condition of her house there and hopes she will have time to visit with us. She has been in America for 15 years with no one taking care of her house so it has deteriorated. She plans to move back to Poland in a year or two and live in that house. It's not actually in Warsaw but in a small village close to Warsaw.

Jutro jest duży dzień wywiadu i spędziłem dzień studiujący. Myślę, że jestem gotowy.

Dostaliśmy email od naszej przyjaciela Krystyny z Chicago. Ona przyjedzie do Warszawy we wrześniu by oszacować warunek jej domu tam i ma nadzieję, że ona będzie mieć czas by bywać z nami.

New

We've been fortunate to make the acquaintance of two new people from Skórzewo in the last week. They are willing to help us learn the polish language and I met with Piotr almost everyday last week to speak with him for two hours each time while he corrects my polish and teaches me new words. Today we were invited to their house in Skórzewo and Joan had the opportunity to meet his wife, Justyna. They are both young and very intelligent and Justyna will soon give birth to their first child. This is good for me and especially good for Joan because she has a woman to talk with. Joan was very happy with our visit to them.

Byliśmy szczęśliwi by zrobić znajomość z dwóch nowych ludzi ze Skórzewo we w ubiegłym tygodniu.

We went to the Rynek to visit the Górka Palace.

It is situated in the southeast corner of the Old Market Square, in a square formed by the four streets: Wodna, Klasztorna, Kozia and Świętosławska. The palace was created in the 1540's following a general reform of several gothic townhouses carried out by the Great Poland governor Andrzej Górka.
The Górka town residence united late Gothic and Renaissance characteristics. Its most attractive feature was the small colonnaded courtyard.
The Górkas, beginning from Andrzej, were supporters of the Reformation and the palace soon became known as a Lutheran centre. In 1592, after the death of the family's last male representative, Stanisław, the palace was inherited by the Czarnkowskis. Four years later it became property of the city, and in 1605 the city sold it to the Benedictine sisters.
After the closure of the convent in 1803 the building housed a secondary school for girls, and after 1880 it was restored as a tenement house. The structure was razed to the ground during the war and rebuilt between 1960-67. Based on old drawings, the elevation was restored to its 17th-18th century form.
In the courtyard the Renaissance colonnades with sandstone columns were revealed. One remnant of the old residence is the original, richly ornamented Renaissance portal made of sandstone in 1548. It leads into the courtyard from Klasztorna Street. The Renaissance portal in Wodna Street was reconstructed in the 1960's. Today the Górka Palaces houses the Archaeological Museum.

The calvary was doing it's usual weekend parade around the square and we were surprised to see how few visitors the square had for a weekend. It was pretty empty. The strength of the zloty is having a bad effect on tourism.

We passed by one Klub that must be left over from the "old days"

Poszliśmy do Rynek by odwiedzić Górka Pałac.

Górka miejskie miejsce zamieszkania połączyło późny gotyk i charakterystykę Renesans.
To prowadzi do dziedzińca z Klasztorna Ulicy.

Summer

Buckingham Fountain
Chicago Skyline

Summer has returned to Poznań, around 85 degrees with a lot of sunshine. I was busy in the afternoon from noon until about 5PM so we couldn't go for a walk.

We received our official NIP tax number today fron ZUS so now we have all the normal numbers for citizens.....Pesel, NIP, national health care number but not citizenship papers.

I did a lot of studying of Polish history today and think I have learned some things I did not know and now I can say this history in the Polish language. I will continue to review for the next two days and hope I can recall it all when I sit in front of the immigration review board on Monday.

With such beautiful weather I thought about Chicago today, the beauty of the city with so many interesting things to see. so many places to visit, great restaurants and parks. Sometimes I miss not being able to go there but not enough to return. I watch the news about the presidential candidates and hope Obama will be the next president. America is such a great country but so misled in the last 8 years.

Lato zwróciło do Poznań, dookoła 85 stopni z dużo światłem słonecznym.

Z takim piękna pogoda pomyślałem o Chicago dzisiaj, piękno o mieście z tak wieloma interesującymi rzeczami by zobaczyć. tak dużo miejsc by bywać, wielkie restauracje i parki.

Nic nowego!

Not much new today. Spending most of my free time studying Polish history for the interview Friday.

They have made a "correction" to the zloty(Whatever that means) so our dollar value rose a little today and that was good news.

Joan and I called to cousin Anna Szumańska and wished her Happy Birthday by singing Sto Lat.

Fountains of the Rynek

Surrounding the Stary Rynek is a collection of statues. Some have very interesting stories behind them.
Otaczanie Stary Rynek jest zbiorem posągów. Kilku mają bardzo interesujące historie za nimi.
Bamberka fountain

Just like every year in the beginning of August in Poznań a holiday commemorating the coming of settlers from German Bamberg will be celebrated.
The first group of settlers came to the capital city of Wielkopolska in 1719.For hundreds of years villages belonging to Poznań were one of the main sources of income for the city. At the beginning of 18th century because of the wars and the plague the villages were almost completely depopulated. It meant serious financial trouble for the city. That is why the authorities of Poznań decided to settle there people from German Bamberg, a region in Upper Franconia. The first agreement with the settlers from Bamberg was signed on 1 August 1719. Within the next several dozen years a considerable group of farmers from Bamberg came to Poznań as a result of the agreement. The only condition new settlers had to meet was to possess a certificate confirming that the holder practices Catholic faith. In return the authorities of the City gave them timber so that they could rebuild their farms. And although the settlers spoke German, not Polish, their assimilation happened very quickly. In the 19th century all farmers from the vicinity of Poznań were called Bambrzy. And, what’s interesting, in the 19th century, when Poznań was a part of Prussia, the descendants of Bamberg settlers considered themselves Polish, not German.Bambrzy and their descendants contributed to the culture of near-Poznań villages. They brought with them their own traditions concerning farming, food, construction, but these traditions were not that completely new, because Polish people had been in touch with their western neighbours for many years. What was the most characteristic feature of Bambrzy was the way they used to dress. Their costumes had formed throughout the ages under Polish and German influences. Women wearing characteristic crowns made of flowers were called in Poznań “bamberka”.After almost 300 years Bambrzy have blended in the Poznań cultural landscape. During the years of the Communist government they even tried to hide their roots, because they were afraid of accusations of cooperation with then hostile Germany. The situation changed in the 1990s. The Society of Poznań Bambrzy was founded, embracing the descendants of the settlers from Bamberg.Every year the Society organizes, on the first Saturday after the 1 August, the Bamber Holiday. It always takes place on the Old Market Square by the fountain of Bamberka at the rear of the Town Hall. After the welcoming ceremony and speeches a fragment of the first agreement made between the City and Bamber settlers from Luboń village is read out. There many other attractions like fruit and vegetable fair, one can also buy farmhouse bread, traditional teacake covered with sugar icing, potatoes with cottage cheese, thick vegetable soup and slices of bread with lard.Mementos left by Bamber settlers are in the Bamber Museum opened a couple of years ago. The Museum has its seat in Mostowa Street, a couple of hundred metres away from the Old Market Square, in the vicinity of the Ethnographic Museum. A typical Bamber house was reconstructed there. On the ground floor we can see a Bamber house with a garden and a fence. All the rooms are equipped with furniture, domestic appliances and pictures that were in the typical 19th century house of a wealthy Bamber farmer. On the first floor there are display cabinets with valuable historic objects like a christening cap from the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries.

Pręgierz (The Pillory)
The pillory attests to the town's autonomous judicial power, which was wielded by the bench of aldermen chosen from among the councillors and headed by the bailiff ("wójt") assisted by city officials and servants. There was also an executioner. The "post of disgrace" in Poznań is surmounted by a figure of an executioner holding a sword in his raised hand, symbolising his authority to administer capital punishment, and a rod in the other hand. As in other towns, the pillory was used in punishment by public humiliation. Villains were exposed, flagellated, branded or even had their limbs cut off. People sentenced to banishment from the city were pilloried as well.
The pillory in Poznań was built in 1535. The Latin inscription on it says that it was financed from fines levied on maids who dressed too smartly. Dilapidated by the passage of time, it was moved to a museum before the war and replaced with a replica made by Marcin Rożek.

The Apollo Fountain at the exit of ul. Świetosławska in Poznań was sculpted by Marian Konieczny in 2002. It is part of a program of the city of Poznań to reconstruct old lost fountains

Interview

I returned to the tax office today, picked up the document I needed and went to the immigration office where I met with Katarzyna. She said I had all of the paperwork done and the next step in the permanent residency card proceedure was the interview. It is an interview in which I am asked to tell about my family ties and what I know about Polish customs, history, tradition and what I recall from my childhood. Sounds like it wouldn't be too difficult. However, the interview is conducted in the Polish language and I must answer in Polish. I have two options, I can either do this on my own or I can bring an official Polish translator with me. I checked some places and an "official" Polish translator costs about 200 zl an hour. I am going to do the interview by myself.

She also said to bring Joan and our passports to the interview and after it is over she will issue to us two 60 day visas because July 31st our temporary residency cards expire. It will take 30 days, at least, for the results of the application for permanent residence.

This week I will be doing a lot of studying on Polish history. Customs and traditions I remember but history is a little bit shaky.

Sprawdziłem kilka miejsc i "oficjalne" polskie tłumacza koszty około 200 zl godzina. Mam zrobić wywiad samemu.

Ona też powiedziała przynieść Joan i nasze paszporty do wywiadu i gdy to jest ponad ona wyjdzie do nas dwie 60 wiz dnia ponieważ lipiec 31. nasze tymczasowe karty rezydencji wygasają.

Church, park and concert

We went to Sołacki park for a walk and then stopped to take pictures of St. John Vianney church. It is very near the park. The church was locked so I had to take pictures through the windows in the doors. I found out that on Sundays at 5PM there are concerts in the park so Joan and I will have to go and listen.

We left the park after two hours and went to the Rynek because there was an outdoors Jazz concert. It featured a group called Corotier, two guitars, bass and drum. I could tell the strong influence of Al DiMeola and Pat Metheny on the guitar players. They were very good and Joan and I enjoyed listening to them.

I was almost out of gas in the car so I made a stop at a gas station and was surprised. It had no attendants, no selling of soft drinks, candy, milk or anything but gas. The most amazing thing was that it was all automated. There was a machine where you put in money or used a credit card. I couldn't figure it out but another customer pulled up while I was there and walked me through the whole process. It wasn't until I saw these pcitures that I realized you can punch a button on the paying machine and the language will turn to English. The best thing about this place is that because there are no attendants to pay, the gas is 10 gz per liter cheaper than any other station.................and it's very close to home.

To zaprezentowało grupę nazwany Corotier, dwie gitary, bas i bęben.

Visit to Ogród

Perfect weather again today, 78 degrees so we had to go outside. We decided to visit one of our favorite places, Ogród Botanicny. Joan hasn't been there this year because of her ankle problem so it was first on her list of places to go to. We weren't disappointed. We spent two hours walking around and looking at all the flowers, plants and trees in bloom. I took so many pictures I had to make the slide show for you to see them all. Be sure to select "Full Screen" when you view them.

We sat in front of the pond with the turtles, fish and lily pad flowers and talked about our first year living in Poland. Joan feels that she hasn't "found herself" yet in Poland and I also feel the same. We need to get more involved with people. We are happy with all we have accomplished in living here like being able to talk enough to get what we want at the store, getting our temporary cards for residency, buying a car, travelling a little, but there is so much more we can do. We would like to be more involved with my family here but we don't want to be "pushy Americans" either.

After our walk in the Ogród we went to the Rynek for a cup of coffee and to watch the people go by. I think the strong value of the zloty is hurting tourism because we don't see as many people in the Rynek as we did last year. Even the resort areas on the Baltic sea are offering discounts to tourists for hotels because many are going to other countries where it is cheaper to vacation.

Usiedliśmy przed stawem z żółwiami, rybą i kwiatami podkładki lilii i powiedzieliśmy o naszym pierwszym roku mieszkającym w Polsce.

Paternal Search

I picked up the translation of my grandfather Adams birth record today. Thanks to cousin Luka, some years ago, I already knew what it said but it had to be done by a translator who has the "official" seal for the immigration office. The new translation said almost the same thing.

Cost for the official translation from Cyrillic Russian to Polish was 60 zl($30) With all the translated documents, application fee and fees for police and tax documents, the Permanent Residency card will cost about 1000 zl($500), if they give it to me.

I have to say a thank you to Zenon Znamirowski - PolishOrigins (zenon@polishorigins.com). I gave him the last names of my paternal great grandparents and places of birth and, using his phonebook, he sent me a list of 35 families who still live in those places. I will write a letter to each of them and see if they have any ancestors in their families with those names. My paternal side of the family has been neglected so it's time to start the search for them. I have one picture of my great grandfather Piotr Piekarczyk so I will include that in each letter. A picture is worth a thousand words.

Muszę powiedzieć dziękuję do Zenon Znamirowski - PolishOrigins (zenon@polishorigins.com ).

Compote Day!

On our last visit to cousin Kazia she gave us a lot of apples from her orchard. Today was the day to peel all of them, cut them and make apple compote so Joan started peeling. I joined her, peeling the apples so she could cut them down to size. After we were all done she added cinnamon and sugar, brought the apples to a boil and then turned off the heat. Altogether it took about two hours and we had the first serving with a dinner of pork chops, salad and boiled potatoes. Very good.
Later in the evening I went to visit a friend, who also has an orchard, and guess what? She gave me a bag of apples to take home :-) So tomorrow we will again peel apples and make more compote.
Tomorrow I will also get the translated Cyrillic Russian birth record of my grandfather Adam.

Gdy byliśmy wszyscy zrobieni ona dodała cynamon i cukier, przyniosła jabłka do wrzenia i wtedy wyłączyła ciepło. Zupełnie to wzięło około dwu godzin i mieliśmy pierwsze służenie z obiadem kotletów wieprzowych, sałaty i zagotowaliśmy ziemniaki.
Ona dała mi torbę jabłek by wziąć do domu :-) Tak jutro, którego znowu obierzemy jabłkom i zrobimy więcej kompotu.

Jutro, którego też dostanę przetłumaczonemu cyrylickiemu rosyjskiemu rekordowi urodzenia mojego dziadka Adama.

Oliwia visits.

Today I met with cousin Oliwia Kupińska at the bus stop and we walked to Jezioro Rusałka, a lake north of where we live. It's about 10 blocks from our house and a nice big lake, about 5 km around. It's been a few months since we have seen other so I was thrilled when she called and asked if we could meet and talk. She will be leaving for England in September to attend school for two years so our meetings then will not be too frequent. It was a nice day for a walk, gray, overcast, about 72 degrees and with very few people around the lake. After our walk was over we stopped at a fast food place and Oliwia introduced me to Zapiekanka. It's like a 12 inch long piece of bread with mushrooms, cheese, sometimes lettuce and and a garlic or catsup sauce on top of it. It takes about 5 minutes to heat and then it is served on a long cardboard tray that holds it. It's a mobile type of food because you can walk while you eat.

When lunch was over I took her to Castorama to help me find a drain cleaner that I had no luck in finding. They didn't have it, again, but gave me something else to use and it worked just fine. It was Kret, recommended by another reader of the blog.

Zenon Znamirowski, another reader of this blog whose website is.....http://forum.polishorigins.com/ told me about a book about the Battle of Vienna in Polish history that he is listening to on the internet. If you go to his site you can find it at....http://polishorigins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=129. There is also a location for Henryk Seinkiewicz's Trilogy book in English....http://chirhobooks.com/chi-rho/read_main.asp

Monday,Tuesday

Monday and Tuesday were spent running around getting the additional information I need for the Permanent Resident card.

The tax office wouldn't give me the clearance because I have no Polish tax number so I had to fill out another form, apply for the NIP number, pay 21 zl and in one week I will have the number and the clearance letter.

Today I got the translated documents except for the one of my grandfathers birth in Poland. Because it is in Cyrillic Russian and not an original the translator could not do it. Tomorrow I will go to a different translator and see if she can do it.

Joan had her final checkup today and was realeased by the doctor. He said the ankle will swell up after long walks and probably when it is hot outside.

Visit to Grzebienisko

Zbyszek and I have a mutual acquaintance whose family member owns a manor house. Zbyszek stopped by today with the idea of driving out to see this house and have coffee. We took route 92, east to Gaj Wielki, turned south and drove the 5 km to Grzebienisko where the house is.

The manor house in Grzebienisko is part of a land estate dating back to the turn of the 19th and 20th c. In the past, the estate belonged to the aristocratic family of Mycielski. Later on, the manor house was owned by the Górny family. In the middle of 1970s, Jerzy Zakrzewski, a well known ENT specialist from Poznań visited the Manor House in Grzebienisko. As an enthusiast of things that are beautiful and have some interesting history, he arrived to buy some old furniture. The agrarian reform of 1945, according to which land estates below 100 ha were not converted into state ownership, enabled the Zakrzewski family to buy the Manor House together with its furniture. The purchased Manor House needed renovation. Jerzy with his father Aleksander restored the building thoroughly. Having consulted an architect, they added the kitchen part, started the renovation of 1h of the park in the English style and converted the building of the old stable into a living house. Instead of the old wooden garden house, a new brick one with four Doric columns was designed. The author of the design was a well known architect Prof. Andrzej Gołkowski

Today the owner of the Manor House is Jerzy Zakrzewski and his son, Paweł. In 2000 Paweł Zakrzewski made the final renovations of the Manor House and the old stable and converted the whole estate to serve the purposes of tourism and recreation. In the 1980s of the 20th c. the estate was a meeting place of the Solidarity opposition members. One of the guests of the Manor was Hanna Suchocka who later became the Polish prime minister.

It sits on 1 hectare of land, surrounded by a stone fence and has been renovated in the past years to point that now it is also used for tourism and bed and breakfast. Unfortunately, the day before was a great wind storm through the area and two of the entrance gates were blocked by fallen trees and limbs. The one gate that was accessible was locked and we couldn't get in. Because this is still a private residence, you can only gain access by invitation or with a reservation, neither of which we had, so we could not go onto the property. However, through the gate we could see the house and surrounding property, very nice. Next time we will arrange the invitation before we go but it was still nice to see such a well kept residence.

Zbyszek i ja mam wzajemną znajomość czyj członek rodziny posiada dworek. Zbyszek wpadł dzisiaj z pomysłem wyjeżdżania zobaczyć ten dom i wypiją kawę.

Posiadłość ta w przeszłości należała do arystokratycznej rodziny Mycielskich, w późniejszym czasie właścicielami Dworku byli Państwo Górni. W połowie lat 70-tych do Dworku w Grzebienisku trafił znany poznański laryngolog Jerzy Zakrzewski.

Another "no" house trip

I found a house in Golina for sale and made the commitment to go and see it. It was "strata czasu"...a waste of time. It turns out this house had actually been a horse stable years ago and was made into a house. My cousin Kazia said it had been bought and sold 10 times already and wasn't worth even half of what they were asking........145,000 zl. We went with cousin Andrzej to see the house, the outside and decided against buying it.

But it wasn't a total waste of time because we spent time with Andrzej and his mother Kazia and that is never a waste of time. Each time we visit we learn new words, have a chance to speak Polish and have someone take the time to help us learn.

In Kazia's backyard are apple and cherry trees and she wouldn't let us leave without giving us a bag full of each.

Znalazłem dom w Golina na sprzedaż i zrobiłem zaangażowanie by pójść i zobaczyć to.

Busy Day!

It was a very busy day. In my last conversation with my angel from the immigration office she said it was a very slim chance that I could be considered for Polish citizenship because my great grandfather left Poland in 1902 while the part of Poland he lived in was under Russian control. In 1920, when Poland regained it's soverignty a law was passed that anyone who had left Poland during that Russian domination time and did not return lost their citizenship. That broke the connection for me. However it was not all bad news because she also told me that because of my strong ties to family in Poland, which I can prove, it is quite possible that I may be able to get a permanent residency card this time instead of a temporary one. That would be good for ten years and then it would be automatically renewed for another ten years. But it requires a new application and 640 zl paid plus................I need to have my birth certificate, my mothers death certificate and my grandfather Adams birth record "officially" translated by a translator that has a government seal to affix to them. I also have to go to the police station, get a document that says I have no criminal record in Poland and a document from the local tax office that says I do not owe any taxes to Poland.

So began my journey today to fullfill the requirements. First to the police department where the lady behind the information desk was very helpful even though she didn't speak English she understood what I needed. she helped me fill out the appliction for the document, called a colleague who did speak english and he walked me through the process until I had the document. Cost...50 zl.

Next I went to the photo studio that we have used before and they gave me the 4 photos of myself that I needed for the application, plus three copies.

My angel from the immigration office gave me a list of translators, I found one close to us in Stary Browar, took the 3 documents I needed translated into Polish and they will be ready next Tuesday. Cost.....about 150 zl

The only thing I have left is the tax office document and I will tackle that on this coming Monday.

Joan will only receive a temporary card, at this time, because she has no blood ties to Poland but it will also be automatically renewed after two years because we are married. It will not be a problem for her. This will relieve us of a lot activity each year preparing an application. I am happy with this outcome.

On another note, cousin Nora seems to be having the time of her life with her trip to America. They have just returned from a tour of the East Coast and on the 19th of July they leave for California. I am so happy for her. Despite all the problems, America is a great and vast country and I am sure it is a trip she will never forget.

Cost...50 zl.

Następny, którego poszedłem do studia fotografii, które użyliśmy przedtem i oni dali mi 4 fotografie siebie, że ja potrzebny dla aplikacji plus trzy kopie.

Great grandmother

Today I received the official birth and baptism record of my great grandmother, Ludwika (Rajewska) Kazmierczak and it clears up one point in my tree. I thought she was born in the village of Staw but that is where she was baptised, 3 days after she was born on August 18, 1850. She was actually born in the next village of Gonice. I could not get a photographed copy of the actual record in the archives because it is so old and they are afraid the flash of a camera would do some harm to it. My "angel" in the immigration also also wrote about 15 letters to the different villages of Babice around Poland looking for the birth record of my great grandfather, Tomasz Piekarczak, and today she received a reply from the parish priest of Babice, near Kraków saying he thinks he has found it. If so, that will open up a whole new area for exploration. It was a good day:=)

Dzisiaj otrzymałem oficjalne urodzenie i rekord chrztu mojej wielkiej babki, Ludwika (Rajewska) Kazmierczak i to sprząta jeden punkt w moim drzewie.

House

Our trip to the Zamek yesterday was interesting because we have passed by it so many times in during our trips to school in the past year but never took the time to go inside. We only had access to half of it and I am sure there is much more to see. I really liked seeing the old pictures I put in the album of the Zamek and the way the streets looked in 1909. In my search I also found a site of an aerial photographer who has some great pictures of Poznań.....http://www.blogger.com/post-create.g?blogID=33728243.

Continuing our search for a house, I recently saw a house for sale in Golina. The debate always arises whether to stay in Poznań and continue renting or buy a house outside of Poznań. We do like Poznań with its ease of acess to museums, cafe's, cultural events, parks, people and the buzz of a city. However, we also like peace, quiet, less activity and closeness fo relatives. This house in Golina is small, to be sure, only 60 meters, but it fits into our price range and in Golina I have several related families. It is where my great grandmother is buried and my grandfather spent his youth so there is a strong family connection. So we will go this Saturday to take a look at this house and see if it is a place for us. We looked at the pictures of the house from the real estate site but they never take good enough pictures. Cousin Andrzej was kind enough to find this house and take more pictures but we still need to see it. It is only a few blocks from where he lives with his mother, Kazia.

Jednak też lubimy pokój, spokojny, mniej działalności i fo krewni bliskości.

Imperial Zamek of Poznań

(There are a lot of pictures, click on Zamek of Poznań, left side of blog)

Zamek Imperial was on the spot of earlier fortifications of the cities last Emperor Wilhelm II of Prussia between 1904 and 1910. He was a key element of the castle, founded at the beginning of the twentieth century in the town centre. On the six floors of the castle there were 585 premises, a clock tower, which is possible by a winding staircase, up to 75 meters in height.

When Poland regained its independence over the building of the state it was the residence of the President of the Republic of Poland. For several years it housed here Ministry of the former Prussia, whose task was to achieve unification with the rest of the country Wielkopolski, in part it also dealt with training rooms for the University of Poznan. During the German occupation in Poznan castle was stationed the Nazi governor Warthegau Arthur Greiser. The building pleasedsed Hitler so much that he ordered its rebuilding in order to adapt it to the German standards. Construction works were carried out under the supervision of architect Albert Speera. There was then a pleasant Byzantine chapel (based on the famous Capella Palatina in Palermo), which occupied two floors up. In its place, a heated cabinet room a balcony and a heated floor.

Hitler wanted to be in Poznan because the great hall could seat two thousand seats. He planned the demolition of walls between the panel room, recreational room and Salą Marmurową. His ideas never were accomplished because in 1943 the Soviets quickly invaded from the Eastern Front. After the conversion remained among other rooms of the Greiser cabinet, which are today hidden in three wainscot door. Some of them lead to a powerful bombshelter, built specially for Hitler. Rebuilding the castle cost 24 million Germans Marks. According to stories of workers who lived there during the occupation, Hitler came to Poznan in 1939. The visit was kept secret and only lasted a few hours. During the liberation of Poznan walls of the castle were severely damaged. Later, it was planned to be destroyed by the Nazis - fortunately they lacked dynamite. January 1, 1963 the castle became a Palace of Culture. Currently, there are various cultural institutions, pubs, discos, cinema and theatre. Often organized here are all competitions, workshops and cultural events, from punk concerts to exhibitions of Bulgarian Impressionists.

For a very, very long time already the building is being put to cleansing operations. After more than two years, finally, the entire south wall and front of the castle on Saint Martin street again looks like one hundred years earlier during the formal opening.
