Joan's better.

Lots of Vitamin C and Joan feels better today. Of course, the three cups of tea with brandy last night helped also :-) She slept through the night without getting up once. Still not 100% healthy but I think on her way back at least.

The sun returned today and it's nice outside again.

We found out why we didn't get our stimulus check for President Obama. Because we no longer have a U.S. address for our Social security it wasn't sent to us. Evidently there is a rule that says you have to have a U.S. address in order to receive the small checks. Oh well, you can't lose what you didn't have.

Colds!

My cold is almost gone, Joan's is just starting with sneezing and sore throat. I bought her a lot tube of Vitamin C to take, made some tea with brandy in it and she's laying in a chair watching the TV.

It's just that time of the year I suppose, every year we have had a cold about this time since we got here. I thought by now our immune system would have stopped them. We hardly ever had colds in the U.S. Maybe more chicken soup :-)

Got an email from cousin Bernice about another Rajewski cousin who is interested in finding out about the family ties so I wrote and email to her today. Kind of strange, I have a picture of her grandfather and don't even know her yet but that's the way it goes with genealogy. The longer I stay at this, the more interesting it gets.

Moje zimno jest minionym prawie, Joan właśnie zacznie z kichaniem i zapaleniem gardła. Kupiłem jej dużo rura Witaminy C by wziąć, zrobiłem trochę herbaty z brandy w tym i ona kładzie w krześle obserwującym telewizję.

A lot happening.

Monday, Monday. Gray, cloudy, rainy and not much happening. I did see pictures of the new waterpark that is being built on the side of Malta Lake, near the shopping center. It will be completed by 2011 and it is huge.

The cornerstone was laid to remain forever in the foundations of the waterpark on the shore of Lake Malta, which will become the ‘Malta Baths’. We’ll be bathing in Poznan’s thermal waters by the end of summer of 2011. The dream is coming true at last. The capital of Greater Poland is about to get the recreational object it deserves – such were the opinions expressed during the founding ceremony. The waterpark in Poznan will also be the largest in Poland.

The project includes the construction of a municipal complex of Olympic-sized sports and recreational swimming pools, along with a complex of wellness facilities, a sauna area and a gym as well as a parking lot containing 485 parking spaces.

Also, preparations for the conversion of the tenement house on the corner of Młyńska and Nowowiejskiego streets in Poznan into an office building, are already in progress. The private investor wishes to turn it mainly into legal offices, and has bought the quadrilateral tenement house on the corner of Młyńska 12-12a and Nowowiejskiego 19-21. Most tenants have already left their previous apartments, and negotiations are being conducted with the remaining ten families, whom the investor –in his own words – is helping to find alternative accommodation.

There is a lot going on in Poznań, as far as new buildings going up and music. In a short time, Wayne Shorter, Chris Botti, Anna Maria Jopek and Johnny Winter all will have separate concerts in the music hall of Mickiewicz University. In November is the fourth annual "Made in Chicago" Jazz Concert Series. Jazz in Chicago is created with the live participation of the audience during numerous concerts in the very well developed and active festival club scene.

Za krótki czas, Wayne Shorter, Chris Botti, Anna Maria Jopek i Johnny Winter wszystko będzie mieć oddzielne koncerty w wodewilu Mickiewicz Uniwersytetu.

Yesterday I was not feeling well enough to get out of bed and write. I thought it would be better to spend the whole time in bed and try to feel well for today's visit from cousin Krzysztof and his family. I think it worked because I did not feel bad at all today, maybe just a little tired, but not enough to keep me from driving to Kandulski's for pastries and walking to the storr for bread for obiad.

They arrived just after 2PM, Krzysztof, his wife Wiesia and son, Marciń. Unfortunately, Oliwia, their daughter who is her visiting from England, did not come with them because she chose to go to Slesiń to visit with her grandfather and aunt, Urszula. Of course, I was disappointed because I wanted to see her before she returned to England but I understand her thinking.

As is the custom for a first time visit to a new home, they came in a gave Joan a 2 beautiful new orchid, similar in color to the one Zbyszek gave her last month at the house warming party. Now she has four orchids. We thought there would be 7 of us for obiad so Joan prepared enough food for 7 but without Oliwia and Wiesia's mother, there were only 5. I suppose the positive thing about that is we have enough food left for two more days so Joan will not have to cook for those days. Of course, we also have pastries left but that, also, will not be a problem :-)

We sat in the living room, had coffee and talked after they had a tour of the flat and looked at all of the family pictures on the walls. Krzysztof was happy to see them. We have much in common when it comes to family history. He has been doing as much research as I have on the families and his knowledge is as extensive as mine so we both can appreciate the others passion for this.

Their son, Marciń, will take his matura examinations at the end of October and then he will select which university to go to. At this time he is in favor of Mickiewicz University in Poznań and I think it would be a good choice. If he is living in Poznań, it is likely we can see him more often and maybe even help him improve his English language. He speaks fairly well now but just needs more practice in conversation and vocabulary.

Joan prepared Kurczak a la flaczki (Tripe style chicken), surówka z białej kapusty (coleslaw) and fresh buns. After dinner we had, we had coffee, tea and 3 kind of pastries from Kandulski's.

They stayed until about 5PM and then returned to their car for the trip back to Koniń, and hour and a half away.

Krzysztof comes from the side of my great grandmother Ludwika Rajewski's family and ever since our first email to one another some 5 or 6 years ago have developed a very good relationship. I very much like spending time with him and his family. His wife, Wiesia, has a beautiful smile and is always patient with my stumbling around the Polish language to try to talk with her. His daughter, Oliwia, came to us in 2004, when we lived in the U.S. and our relationship developed from that point. We have not had a lot of contact with Marciń but I hope when he is a student in Poznań that will change. I have already told him that our house is his house when he is in Poznań and he is always welcome to come over, if for nothing else than a good home cooked meal. That is true for any of my extended family. They are all welcome, at any time.

Usiedliśmy w pokoju mieszkalnym, mieliśmy kawę i powiedzieliśmy gdy oni mieli objazd mieszkania i popatrzeli w ogóle zdjęć rodziny na ścianach. Krzysztof był szczęśliwy by zobaczyć ich. Mamy dużo wspólnie kiedy to przychodzi do historii rodziny.

On mówi dość dobrze teraz ale właśnie potrzebuje więcej praktyki w rozmowie i słownictwie.

Joan przygotowała Kurczak la flaczki (Flaczków kurczę stylu), surówka z białej kapusty (surówka z kapusty) i świeże słodkie bułeczki.

Sukces!

They say the third time is a charm and it was for us. We arrived at the office of registration to wait for our landlady to show up at 8AM. At 8:10 she appeared with her boyfriend who speaks English. He talked to the information clerk, got all the papers we needed and then we filled them out. We entered the offices, went up to a clerks window and in half an hour Joan and I had our registration papers. Done. Mine is good for 5 years, Joan's only until next June because then she must reapply for a permit to stay in Poland. That shouldn't be a problem to do and we will start the paperwork for that on May 15th. Thankfully, the lady at Immigration who was so helpful with me getting permanent residence in less than one year being here still works there.

After that we met with Zbyszek for our weekly conversation and coffee. He told me about a palace he was at last weekend, working as a translator at a conference held there. It is owned by the University and he was asked to participate. I said I would like to see this palace and he replied it would be no problem for him to talk to the administrator of the place and take a trip out there. It is only about 45 minutes east of where we live and we have been to that area before to look at other palaces but didn't know about this one. The good thing about it would be that we could go inside and look everywhere.

We had planned to go to Rogalin in the afternoon but thankfully I looked at their website and found it will not be opened until October 1st. Previously they had said it would open on September 1st.

With the change in weather, colds are starting to catch everyone. I'm not immune, having a slight cough, runny nose and sneezing. I've loaded up on vitamin C and will try to get some rest tomorrow although the house must be cleaned and made ready for cousin Krzysztof on Sunday.

On powiedział do urzędnika informacji , dostał wszystkie papiery my potrzebny i wtedy wypełniliśmy ich. Weszliśmy do biur, poszliśmy do okna urzędników i w pół Joan godziny i miałem nasze papiery rejestracji. Zrobiony.

Merlin

We went to Merlins today to try to find a rug for the bedroom, size 170x190, but they didn't have anything close. I guess we'll try Ikea later on but they pretty much have the same rugs as Merlin but with a smaller selection.

I did manage to get a hold of the landlady today and we have a meeting set for tomorrow morning, 8AM, at the registration office. I hope she shows up.

A little cooler today but still sunny so it was a nice day. We did our weekly shopping, 107zl($40). Heard today from someone about a terrific summer course in Polish next year in Łodz. An Italian man wanted to marry his Polish girlfriend but couldn't seem to learn the language from anywhere. He went to the course and now he can communicate with his new relatives. I think I'll check it out in the next few months.

We had a problem with a bank transfer from the U.S. to our Polish account and had to call Citibank in America to get it straightened out. I was on the phone for 20 minutes, the call cost 60zl($30) a little over a dollar a minute even though it was suppose to be a toll-free number.

Mieliśmy problem z przelewem bankowym ze Stanów Zjednoczonych do naszego polskiego rachunku i musieliśmy nazwać Citibank w Ameryce by dostać to prostowani.

Rogalin

Mostly sunny during the day, we did laundry, cleaned a little, I wrote a letter to Janek to ask him to make a copy of the picture I lost, Joan prepared the menu for cousing Krzysztof's visit on Sunday and I thought about calling our landlady again to see if she would finally come over. We need to get our registration done for our place of residence but she hasn't been to eager to meet with us and that is strange. We have had two meetings scheduled but both times no one showed up or called to cancel the meeting. It's pretty frustrating. There is no mediator we can turn to and we don't to be a problem for the landlady but we need to get the registration done. Without it we cannot change car insurance address, health insurance address or any address including our ID cards. So I guess I will have to call her again tomorrow and see if we can arrange a meeting that she shows up for.

Autumn is more than in the air, trees are already changing colors and I look forward to a trip into the country to take pictures. This weekend we are busy with visitors but maybe next weekend we can return to Golina.

Friday we hope to be able to go to Rogalin to see the Raczynski palace. It is only opened until Oct 1st so our time is getting short to visit it. From the 25th to the 27th of this month it is a celebration of this old Polish family and all they accomplished. One son, Edward Bernard Raczynski (b. December 19 1891 year Zakopane, Died. July 30 1993 in London, Buried in Rogalin) was both the oldest (by the office in 95 years of age) and the longest living president of the Republic of Poland (almost 102 years).

Przeważnie słoneczny podczas dnia, wypraliśmy, wyczyściliśmy trochę, napisałem list do Janek by poprosić, żeby on zrobił kopię z zdjęcia, którym straciłem, Joan przygotowała menu dla cousing wizyta Krzysztof w niedzielę i pomyślałem o nazwaniu naszej ziemianki znowu by zobaczyć jeżeli ona w końcu przybyłaby. To dość frustruje.

Piątek spodziewamy się móc pójść do Rogalin by zobaczyć pałac Raczynski.

Searching

I still can't believe I lost that photo in my computer. Spent another 4 hours looking through old CD backups all the way back to 2006 and can't find it. It had to come from somewhere!

Anyway, the weather is still nice outside for another day and then it's turning cooler with rain. I suppose the cafe's will be coming down soon. Boo Hoo!!

I saw on Nora's blog the new pictures of the horse the Dittenbers have just purchased. Looks nice. Too bad they don't live close by so I could ride. It's still a dream of mine to learn to ride. Found out today there is a stable close to us in Woła. They charge 30zl per hour. Not too bad.

To musiało pochodzić z gdzieś!

Dumb thing.

Cyclamon is doing well.

Yes, I was thrilled to give cousin Janek a picture of his mother and father with 12 of their 13 children. Only Janek was not in the picture, he was not born at the time of the picture. It has taken me almost 9 years to collect pictures of my grandfathers brothers and sister families. I have them all displayed on one wall. Last Monday I thought it would be a good present for Janek, to give him an enlarged, framed copy of the picture I have.

Unfortunately, I didn't get one made by Friday so I decided to just take the one off of my wall, wrap it up and give it to him. I thought Monday I would just go into my laptop filled with pictures, find the picture and make a copy for myself. That was a BIG mistake.

I've looked through 4000 pictures now, twice, and cannot find the picture so I do not have it, for some reason that I do not know. Now I must write to Janek, ask him to make a copy of his picture and send it to me to once again complete the family pictures. What a disaster!!! It certainly did not make my day.

To wzięło mnie prawie 9 lat by zebrać zdjęcia moich braci dziadków i bliźniaczych rodzin.

Teraz muszę napisać do Janek, poprosić, żeby on robił kopię z jego zdjęcia} i wysłać to do mnie jeszcze raz by uzupełnić zdjęcia rodziny. Jaka katastrofa!!! To na pewno nie zrobiło mojego dnia.

Visiting!

Two gorgeous days for traveling we had. Saturday we left at 11AM and, on the advice of a friend, we didn't take the normal route to Grudziądz. Instead of the main travel way we took a smaller road from Oborniki to to Nakło Nad Notecia, a small town west of Bydgoszcz. The road was just a country road but had very little traffic on it and since we were not in a hurry to get to Chelmno, it was perfect. We passed through Wągowiec and saw a very interestingly constructed new church. It was not ugly like so many of the new ones but actually had some style to it.

From there we proceeded on route 241, heading and passing through Kczynia. There stood the typical old church but with rounded turets on top. I stopped to look inside and took a few pictures. As we were leaving Kcynia, a long procession of people had the traffic crawling at a snail's pace because they were all walking behind a hearse carrying a body to the cemetery 1 km from town. There were so many people in the procession they decided to walk on the highway and traffic was moving VERY slowly. About half and hour later they reached the cemetery and we proceeded on our way to Bydgoszcz where we took route 5 north to Swiecie and then route 1 across the bridge to Chelmno.

We quickly found the hotel, actually it is just a large house built by the grandfather of the owner and now five of the bedrooms have become a hotel. It was very nice, quaint and the balcony outside our room was made of stones. After we checked in we walked to the other side of this small town to the Karzcma hotel for dinner. There were only two restaurants in Chelmno that were open and we chose that one.

Dinner for me was a pork chop, kapusta and potatoes. The pork chop was the biggest one I have ever seen in my life and it took a long time to eat it. Joan had gołumbki and potatoes and then apple cake for desert.

We visited the St. Peter and Paul church to see how much progress they have made and it has been considerable when you think there are only four or five people working on the restoration since last year.

Back at the hotel, we showered and prepared for our visit the next day with cousin Janek in Grudziądz, only about half an hours drive away.

In the morning we had coffee, packed, dressed up and headed out of town on route 9, another small country road that was a pleasure to drive. No traffic and it got us into Grudziądz on the west side so we had a chance to take some pictures of the Wisła river. I wanted to visit the old grainery but didn't have time before our visit.

We stopped and bought flowers for Janeks wife, the usual custom for visiting after such a long time and arrived at 1PM. It was great to see them again and their granddaughter, Natalia, was there also. She is 12 years old now and has grown a lot since we saw her in 2004.

10 minutes after we arrived, Stasek, Janek's brother arrived so we were able to see him also. I gave Janek the picture and a long list of questions I had prepared about his brothers and sisters. He took a pen and answered as many as he and his brother could remember. It was good for me because it fills in more blank spots on our family tree.

After cake and coffee, we talked for about 2 hours and then were served obiad. Finally, at 4:30PM, it was time to start the drive back to Poznań. I think it was a very good trip, a good visit and look forward to the next one. I only wish I had time to visit with Stefania, the third remaining child of my grandfathers brother, Stanisław. Next time!

Zamiast głównej drogi podróży wzięliśmy mniejszą drogę z Oborniki do do Nakło Nad Notecia, małego miejskiego zachodu Bydgoszczy.

Zatrzymywałem się by popatrzeć wewnątrz i zrobiłem kilka zdjęć. O pół i godzina później oni osiągnęli cmentarz i przeszliśmy na naszym sposobie do Bydgoszczy gdzie wzięliśmy szlakowi 5 północy do Swiecie i wtedy szlak 1 poprzez most do Chelmno.

10 minut gdy przybyliśmy, Stasek, brat Janek przybył tak mogliśmy zobaczyć go też. On wziął pióro i odpowiedział tyle ilu on i jego brat mógłby zapamiętać.

W końcu, o 4:30PM, to było czas by zacząć przejażdżkę w tył do Poznań.

Coldplay!

Cousin Nora Bekalarek went to Coldplay concert in Dusseldorf, Germany. Here's a few pictures from her.

Preparation.

Quiet day. Washed the car and windows in preparation for our trip tomorrow. Brought down one small suitcase from the storage closet, packed some clothes in it for the vist and Joan decided what she would wear. I'm giving cousin Johnny and the framed picture of this parents and all the children. I know he has a small version of it but I enlarged it to 20x30 so you could see them better. I think he'll like it.

There will not be a blog tomorrow as I am leaving the laptop at home but I'll write as soon as we get back with lots of pictures and notes.

The news about the missile shield was scrapped on the front page of the newspapers. Poland is not to happy about that and I can not blame them.

Daję kuzyna Johnny′ego i ukształtowany zdjęcie tych rodziców i wszystkich dzieci.

Z day

Shopping day today because tomorrow we will be getting ready for our trip. We had coffee with Z around 2PM and then returned home to do a little house cleaning before we left.

Joan is making the first Żurek since we moved into the new place. Seems like a long time since we had it and so I'm anxious for dinner :-)

I went to Google maps and printed out some close ups of streets in Grudziądz so I won't get lost trying to find Janeks place. Also looked at the family tree and realized there is still information I don't have about some of his brothers and sisters. He has or had 12 siblings and I only know details on 5 of them so I wrote out a sheet of questions I hope he can answer..................and I hope I can ask in Polish.

Mieliśmy kawę z Z dookoła 2PM i wtedy wróciliśmy do domu by robić trochę domu czyszczący przed my wyruszył.

Road trip!!

So, the meeting is all set for Sunday at 1PM with cousin Jan Kazmierczak in Grudziądz. He is a son of my grandfathers brother and I haven't seem him since our trip to Poland in 2004. We will leave Saturday around noon and drive to Chelmno where we will stay for the night. Chemlno is a town we visited last year and I really liked it. There is an old church there, inside the medieval walls that still surround the old city. It was just starting to be restored and I'm interested to see how much progress has been made since our last visit.

Also got some news that cousin Krzysztof Kupiński accepted our invitation and will visit us on Sunday, Sept. 27th. His daughter, Oliwia, will be in Poland on a break from school in England so we will get to see her also. It will be his first visit to us with his family since we moved into our new flat. I can't wait to see them.

Other than that new, the weather is a little warmer, the sun was out all day today and it was a nice day. Tomorrow is suppose to be warmer.

Thanks to Ann and Korinna for telling me the name of the butterfly that I posted yesteday.

Big Day!

A moth attached itself to our window frame today and it was so beautiful in it's coloring. It stayed for about 10 minutes then flew away.

A big day for Joan. She walked to the Apteka and got her prescription filled, spoke to the lady in Polish(somewhat). She returned home without getting lost which may not seem like a big thing but it is because she has problems with directions. I won't let her leave home without her cell phone, just in case she does get lost sometime. You know the expression, "Don't leave home without it"? Well, that applies to her cell phone.

Still a little gray and cloudy but warming up this week to 26 on Thursday and then going back down. Some trees are starting to turn colors and autumn is definitely on its way here. It will be interesting to see how warm our new flat is compared to the old one. The old one was always warm, no matter what the outside temperature was. It had the newer, plastic windows while this one has the older, wooden windows. We've lived through winters in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and winters here can't be that bad.

Monday, Monday!

Monday with not much going on. Thanks for your comments about our friend Jays story. I can't believe it myself. Incredible!

I read another shopping mall is going to be built by Ikea and Ikea will double in size. It's already huge, I can't imagine what else they will put in that store.

Watched Les Miserables last night starring Gerard Depardeau and John Malkovitch. What a great movie but 3 hours long. I think we'll watch it again though.

Thinking about going to Grudziądz this weekend on Sunday to visit with cousin Janek but I have to make up my mind and call first to see if it is OK to visit then. Also have to get to Rogalin to see the palace before it closes for the season.

Poniedziałek z nie dużą ilością chodzenia dalej. Dzięki dla twoich komentarzy o naszym przyjacielu Jays historia. Nie mogę uwierzyć tego sam. Niewiarogodny!

Obserwowany Les Miserables ubiegłej nocy występujący w głównej roli Gerard Depardeau i John Malkovitch. Jaki wielki film ale 3 godziny długo. Myślę, że będziemy obserwować to znowu chociaż.

Myślenie o chodzeniu do Grudziądz ten weekend w niedzielę by bywać z kuzyna Janek ale muszę sporządzić mój umysł i zawołać po pierwsze by zobaczyć jeżeli to ma w porządku bywać wtedy. Też muszą dostać się do Rogalin by zobaczyć pałac zanim to zamknie dla pory.

Nightmare!!!!!!!!!!!!

We have an American friend who lived in Gdansk with his wife(Polish) and daughter. In February, after 5 years, they decided to move back to the U.S. What has happened to them in an incredibile story I thought I would share with you.

My name is Jay born in New Jersey and I'm the Father of a little Angel named Pamela and Husband of my other Angel and wife Asha. We have been victims of immigration abuse and separated in the worst way possible. My Family and I moved to Poland where my wife's from looking for a better life and resided there for 5 years and when we decide to come back to the U.S. cause we think the winters are too harsh and don't wanna raise our daughter between 4 walls most of the year, the American embassy in Poland decides to start pushing us around and abusing their power and position. When we decided to fill out a petition we called the embassy and they made it sound like it was going to be easy to get the immigration Visa. We make a 6 hour train trip one way, (12 hour total) to get to the American embassy, making a huge sacrifice taking a day off from work, spending money on train fare and taking our baby with us. When we get there we were treated like dirt by the Americans that work there, they didn't want to answer any questions then asked for more money that they had not asked for on the phone when we previously called. We knew we had to travel far so we asked them several times before we hung up the phone and they said, yes that's all the money you need. Well that wasn't the case. Then they said that I would need a sponsor and I asked them clearly if my Parents that live in Puerto Rico could sponsor my Wife Asha and they clearly said yes, we asked them again several times before we took that 6 hour train ride back home. Well on we go and contacted my parents and had them fill out the forms and mailed them to us and we make that sacrifice and rode the train for 6 hours to get to the embassy and when we get there they tell us that my parents don't make enough money and that I'd need anouther co-joint sponsor. They never told us that there was an amount limit required by the sponsor. So we ask them again clearly cause we are frightened by these people at the embasssy cause we by then could see how vicious they are and their bad intentions. Well here we go again on the train dragging our little baby and riding back home for 6 hours. Now we ask my sister that lives in Puerto Rico to sponsor my wife Asha so she went through the hassle of filling out the forms and mailing them to us. For a 3rd time we get on a train again to take that 6 hour train ride (12 hours both ways) and when we get there these evil beings decide to tell us then that Puerto Rico doesn't count as American territory and that noone from Puerto Rico could sponsor my wife Asha. Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat ???? Why tell us that the 3rd time that we've been there and not the first time ??? These people don't have a heart and care less if you are bleeding to death making that 3 hour line holding a baby to see them. Noww they tell me that the only way that the immigration visa would be issued for my wife is if I move to the U.S. first and leave them behind, in otheer words this tight Family haas to be broken up. They say I need to provide proof of residence and work, utility bills, bank statements and mail them to my wife then they'll see if they issue the immigration visa. WHY WAIT UNTIL THE 3RD TIME THAT WE GO THERE TO TELL ME THAT I HAVE TO GO BACK TO THE U.S. WITHOUT MY FAMILY AND PUT US THROUGH ALL OF THAT TRAVELING, MONEY SPENDING, AND DISHEARTENING EXPERIENCE ??? Everytime we go there they change the requirements. My wife walked out of there in tears. These is the way that the 5 americans that live in Poland get treated when they step in American territory, "United We Stand" Right. Well after everything we went through we didn't achieve anything and I had to find strength from within to leave my Wife and Daughter at the airport and walk away to get on the plane as my Daughter screamed Papa, Papa, Papa. My heart ripped in a million pieces and a piece of my soul was taken away that day. I've been skyping with my Girls and I feel my heart twitch when I see and hear my little Daughter on the webcam. Every Morning My Daughter Pammy the first thing she does is walk up to the computer and scream "Papa, Papa". I don't know if I could live with the fact that these important time will never come back, babies grow quick and change quickly in appearance and behavior, it's not 6 months in the life of an adult. Plus us addults understand better what's going on but a baby doesn't understand why Papa is not around anymore. Although I have tried so hard, have not found steady work and provide proof of work in this recession but now recently found a job. I'm running behind money wise and legal wise and I'm just reaching out to you people to see someone can help me and my girls reunite, maybe you can make a donation so I could pay the Lawyers bill which cost 1,200, I figure if I had 1,200 myspace friends and each donated a dollar then I couldd cover the bill. Maybe a lawyer could help me too. I'ts been 5 months and I feel like I'm dying slowly, my wife and Daughter misss each other and are losing our heads, it's hard to sleep and it's hard to make it through the day and function normally when you can feel every mile between America and Europe. I hope someone outthere finds in his/her heart to lend a hand, whetheer is financial, legal help or moral support. I am even willing to go on TV if I have to and tell my story to expose these heartless people. If you want to make a donation please send me a message and also you caan help by reposting bulletins and letting everyone know about my situation. My Family and I will appreciate it from the bottom of our beaten hearts, this is a cry for help, God Bless you all.

Rynek

I went to the rynek to take some photos of the event I told you about yesterday. There were much less people today. Weather was gray, cloudy and 14c, not a good day for the outside cafes.

There was a trio performing on the one stage standing, two guys playing bagpipes and a girl drummer in the middle. It sounded more Irish than Polish as far as the music went but they were good at what they did. More than half of the kiosks were gone, all of the ones with the breads on the east side were missing and only one that was selling kiełbasa was left.

I walked up to the top of Przemysł Hill where the remnants of the old castle are and took some pictures of the top of the town hall, the church across the street from it, the castle wall (rebuilt), and a view of the church front. Joan stayed home and watched the snooker tournament on TV. She's addicted to snooker now :-)
Slideshow

Poszedłem do rynek by zrobić kilka fotografii zdarzenia, które powiedziałem tobie dookoła wczoraj.

European Days!

The rynek was packed with people today. After we went to Ikea to find a lamp we stopped at the rynek. The lamp was 30zl ($10) and is adjustable for lighting which is what we wanted. The old light bulbs are not going to be sold in Poland in the future so everyone will eventually have to replace them with the new ecological lights.

I forgot this weekend and next weekend is the celebration time for this event. Of course there were many kiosks set up selling bread, food, medieval like clothing, wooden swords and things relating to the early days of Poland. Unfortunately I didn't have my camera so there are no pictures yet but if tomorrows weather is good I will go back and photograph the event for you.

The day started out gray and gloomy but by noon the clouds were gone and the sun was out. I started out wearing a jacket but had to take it off it was so warm.

9/11 and cousin Jan.

Gray day, slept until 10AM, a first in a long time. Today, of course, was a day of remembrance of 9/11 but also of cousin Jan Szumański who lives in New York. After the towers came down, his construction crew was one of the first crews to start searching under the buildings for anyone that could be found. PBS(Public Broadcasting System) in New York made a special program about him and I have it on VHS tape. He was back in Golina for a visit last month but I didn't have the chance to see him.

In the afternoon we went to Praktiker to look for a floor lamp for the dining room. The overhead lights are just too bright so we thought a light in the corner would be better. We didn't find what we wanted to we'll try Ikea tomorrow.

At 4PM we met with Zbyszek for coffee and conversation. He brought up an interesting question about the English language I couldn't answer. Maybe you can. Why do we say "the Ukraine" or "the Sudan" but don't say "the Russia or the Germany or the France, etc."?

Dzień szarości , spany aż do 10AM, pierwszego w długim czasie.

Nie znaleźliśmy czego chcieliśmy do my spróbujemy jutro Ikea.

House day.

A nice day spent cleaning the house, answering emails and planning for the weekend. The next two weekends are celebration of European historical buildings, museums and parks so anything you want to visit on those days are open and free to the public. We hoping to have a meeting with cousin Luka but the weather will be nice so she has decided to go to their summer home instead for the weekend.

Not sure what we will do, I do want to go and visit Rogalin. There is the Baroque palace, park and coach house from the Eighteenth century. The family is located in the palace church. St. Marcellina - Raczynski mausoleum. The palace has a gallery of paintings in their collection of works of artists such as: Jan Matejko, Jacek Malczewski, Stanislaw Wyspianski, Julian Falat, Olga Boznanska, Leon Wyczolkowski, Aleksander Gierymski, Maurice Chabas, Albert Besnard, Paul Delaroche and Claude Monet. The Palace is a branch of National Museum in Poznan. It's been under renovation for the last two years and is finally open again now.

Marcellina - mauzoleum Raczynski.

Beautiful day, too nice to stay inside so we went to the rynek first and then to Rusałka lake to walk.Lake Rusalka is an artificial lake with an area of 367.000 square meters. It was formed in 1943 as a result of the damming of the Bogdanka River. In 1940 thousands of people were executed in the forests surrounding the lake. Now it is a place for biking, walking, kayaking, sun bathing and in general, just a nice place to be on a nice day.

We've been there before, when we lived in our other apartment. From either flat it is not far and only about 3 miles around the lake so not too bad for a walk. It also connects up by trails that lead to two other lakes and Sołacki park.

Approaching it from our new flat we were surprised to find a driving course, soccer field and a track that is used for motorbike racing. We heard the noise from one of those races when we first moved in but they do no hold them very often. Thank God!!

Last night we were somewhat annoyed. We have been waiting on two occassions for our landlord to come over so we could talk about some issues. Both times appointments were made in the evening between 7 and 8 PM and both times she didn't show up. Not only did she not show up but she did not even call to cancel, say she would be late or anything. Maybe we should be use to this kind of careless treatment but we are not. I can't understand why there was not even a phone call to explain her situation. Today, also, there has been no word from her. This is not the way to treat people, whether they are your tenants or best friends. It's just about common courtesy, that's all.

Slideshow.

Macedonia.

This month Poland is hosting the EuroBasketball championships and some games are being played in Poznań. We realized that this morning when we went to the rynek for coffee. As we walked down Paderewskiego street towards the rynek the sound of a large group of fans got louder and louder. I didn't understand any of the language so I was curious as to who they were and why they were in Poznań celebrating.

We rounded the corner into the square and there in one of the outside cafes sat about 50 fans, dressed in red and yellow t-shirts that said Macedonia. When I asked the waitress in our cafe she told me who they were and why the celebration was going on. Evidently, last night they defeated Israel, 82-79 and that was the cause of the celebration. They reminded me of Joan and I when we were so crazy for the Chicago Bears during their championship year and how enthusiastic we were during that time. It was a good time for us.

Zaokrągliliśmy kąt do kwadratu i tam w jednej z zewnętrznych kawiarń usiedliśmy dookoła 50 entuzjastów, ubranych w czerwonych i żółtych koszulkach, które powiedziały Macedonię.

Monday.

Better than the last day 4, the sunshine and warmer temperature, about 21c. It's a day off in the states, Labor Day but here in Poland just a normal day. Did not have much to do ourselves, and then later studied at 4PM. Nancy came over and we had coffee on the balcony.

The building management is starting renovation of the building, or I should say insulation of the building. They started on the south end with insulation on the outside and then will cover it over with a layer of plaster. So it seems the building will also be painted when they are done and should look good. I do not know how long it will take it to the whole building.

Tomorrow night the landlady will come over in the evening so we can talk about a few things that we need to know like who to call in case of an emergency in the flat. I mean if something stops working or something like that. It will be her first time here since we moved in and I am curious as to what her reaction will be to all of the pictures on the walls.

Lepiej niż ostatni dzień 4, światło słoneczne i cieplejsza temperatura, o 21c.

No potatoes!

We planned on going to the potato festival today in Cytadel park but it's 60F outside, gray, damp, cloudy so instead we just stayed home, watched some old movies, studied Polish and in general just laid around all day. So, I guess you could say it was an inactive day for us.

I did find an intersting advertisement in the TV guide for a company named Tolek. They are based in Włocław and they manufacture 3 wheel bycycles. Joan has a problem riding a bike and I've been looking for an alternative to the two wheeler. Maybe this is it. I'll contact them or look at their website to find out more information.

Gray Days.

Gray, cloudy, rain day number 4. Outside everyone is wearing light coats, no more sandals, shorts, or short sleeved shirts. It's suppose to stay like this until Monday when the sun will return and the temperatures back up to 24c. Right now it's 18c at 5PM.

I spent part of the day reading about our temp. control system in this flat. It's something I didn't have to know in the old one, we just waited until the heat was turned on Oct 15th but here we control it, or so it seems. I was lucky enough to find an English version for this system, Euroster 2000, on the internet. Now it's just a matter of understanding how to use it.

Finally the soap opera's have come back from summer vacation and M Jak Miłość, The Klan and Złotopolcy once again are viewable. Oh BOY!!!!

Food day.

About 4 months ago our friend Sylwia gave Joan this plant and today it has these beautiful blossoms growing out. Evidently it like the new flat also :-).

Today was shopping day for food. We spent 101 zl. We bought a few things extra like a new baking pan because Joan found her recipe for Lemon Chicken and it takes a larger pan than she had. She used to make it in the U.S. but hasn't since we've been here because she couldn't find the recipe until now.

Before food shopping we met with Zbyszek at the usual place for coffee an conversation. We stayed about two hours and then drove to the store.

Back at home I've been trying to figure out how to edit a PDF file I have but with no success yet. It's not really just a file, it's the family history book I wrote in 2004 and it is in need of updating. I know you can use Adobe Buzzer to edit PDF but when I try to load the file it keeps giving me an error message and won't finish the upload. I'll keep searching until I find the answer.

Pozostaliśmy około dwu godzin i wtedy popędziliśmy do sklepu.
