Keep smiling!

The beauty of life! Just when you think things are going smoothly, something new is thrown into the game. Since we've been in Poland, 7 years, every two years Joan has to apply for a new temporary permit to stay here. We've become use to it and have kept all of them from the past. When it's time for her to re-apply we just copy the same information into the new application, have new photos of her taken for the card, pay the fee and wait 45 days to get it. Now that she has been here over 5 years it was possible for her to get a permanent residency card like I have. With this card, it is good for ten years, then automatically renewed. Well, May 1st of this year, the rules have changed.

Now she will not get a residency card from Poland but from the European Union. With this change, governed by the EU, the rules are different. In addition to the other things: proof of address, passport, health insurance, income, etc. she must also have a certificate from the court that shows she has no criminal record in Poland and from the tax office that she owes no taxes in Poland. This would mean going to those places, making the applications and waiting for them to come back to us. Before, you had to start the proces 45 days before the expiration of your current residency card. Now you can wait until the day before it expires to start the proces.  Even with the expired card you can stay providing you have started the new proces already. The difference is it takes three months for the process now.  Fortunately, fortunately, we have a very good relationship with someone from the immigration office who has always been very helpful and she sent me instructions on how those two new applications can be made over the internet.

Today we went to have the photos taken, filled out the first application form(you need the original and 3 copies) and hope to take it into the immigration office to be checked in case we missed something. Joan also has to be fingerprinted now. With us leaving Sunday for Berlin we wanted to at least start the proces. We can add the other documents when we receive them from the court and tax office. The positive side of all this is that once she has her card she won't have to do it again in two years because she will be a permanent EU resident from that point on.

Chcieliśmy, aby przed naszym wyjazdem do Berlina rozpocząć ten proces .
