Sometimes I re-post a picture from some time ago because it still amazes me. Above is the collaboration of a group of artists that painted the side of a typical gray colored building. They were very creative in their imagination with what they came up with as you can see in the second picture. The effort on their part a few years ago continues to draw people into the area just to see the painting. Now the area has blossomed with new cafes, restaurants and small stores and is a tourist attraction. If you didn't know it was a painted wall and were just driving around the corner and saw it, you would think there were small stores, people living above them and a cat on the roof. It is that life-like. This group should be commissioned to do more buildings in the city like this. There are definitely buildings that could benefit from it plus make the city look better.

The Poznań city authorities promised to limit the alcohol trade in Old Town. A few months ago such a possibility was given to local governments by a law adopted by the parliament. Poznań decided to make this move one of the first cities and a radical solution was chosen right away. This means that from 22:00-6:00, shops and grocery stores operating in the Old Town (there are over 200 of them) will not be able to sell alcoholic beverages. You can still buy them in pubs or restaurants. It will take effect at the end of May.

Well, God blessed us with another beautiful sunny day that we could take advantage of and we did with the same ride we had yesterday. This time I took my camera and made a little video of what we saw. the rzepak fields. I didn't think just pictures would be enough so I hope the videos give you a better feel for the majesty of the scenery at this time of the year. Truly MAGNIFICENT. It took a long time to prepare them for viewing and as I write this they are in the process.

We took a little different route going there this time, through Kierkz and getting on the main road to Szamotuły. The palace is fairly hidden by all the trees in front of it and the gate entrance has been blocked closer to the road so you can"t go as far in as before. It's a pity no one has bought that place yet and it continues to stand empty for at least 10 years since we have been here. I would love to get inside and take pictures of it.

I put the camera on the dashboard and set it to video for the remaining trip and on return we completed the road back to Poznań to see more of the rzepak. The combination of drives through villages, forest and open fields was nice but the rzepak fields were the best.We love them.

I could kick myself in the @#%@! now. I didn't follow one of my basic rules, take the camera with me. Consequently I missed some beautiful pictures of rzepak.

The other day we drove an hour north to Wągrowiec and saw a few fields of it , some in full bloom, some already in decline. What we saw was nice but nothing like we expected.

Today we thought we would take a ride towards Szamotuły, take another look at the old palace still for sale in Napachanie and just get out of Poznań. What we saw was breathtaking. Field after field of rzepak in full bloom on both sides of the road. Even if I had taken pictures they would not have given justice to the scenery. I can only hope tomorrow will be a sunny day so I can repeat the trip, with camera. I just wish you all could experience this marvelous display of color and aroma. We did stop and walk into one field to inhale the aroma of the plant. It filled our entire body.

Sunday?

Today is Sunday, yesterday was Sunday and the day before was Sunday. Not really because today is Friday but this long weekend makes everyday feel like Sunday. However, for us, Joan and I, every day is Sunday now. We don't have time clocks to punch, due dates for projects. time to be at work or things like that. Yes, there are times during some days for meeting with someone or a day to go somewhere but we set those dates. It is a wonderful benefit of being retired. It would not be possible to just sit at home and do very little with this remaining life, it is too short. We should make the most of it and we do try. Learning a new language, traveling to a new place, making new acquaintances, those are all things we look forward to. Life is good if you make it so.

Today we went for a drive on the back roads to Morasko and saw dozens of huge lilac bushes everywhere of the three colors, white, purple and lavender. The deep purple ones have the best aroma. When we lived in the U.S., during lilac season I had places where I could collect bouquets of them and bring them home for Joan. Where we live now it is not so easy because most are on private property. What a pity!

Stage 1 of our Spain trip for next year is confirmed for the 4th week of January to the 4th week of April. I cannot reserve flights until November according to Ryanair.

Dzisiaj wybraliśmy się na przejażdżkę bocznymi drogami do Morasko i zobaczyliśmy tuziny ogromnych krzaków bzu w trzech kolorach: białym, fioletowym i lawendowym. Głęboko fioletowe mają najlepszy aromat. Kiedy mieszkaliśmy w USA, podczas sezonu kwitnienia bzu miałem miejsca, w których mogłem zbierać ich bukiety i przynieść do domu dla Joanny. Miejsce, w którym  teraz mieszkamy, nie jest to takie łatwe, ponieważ większość z nich znajduje się na terenie prywatnym. Jaka szkoda!

Pierwszy etap naszej hiszpańskiej wycieczki na przyszły rok jest potwierdzony na okres od  4 tygodnia stycznia do 4 tygodnia kwietnia. Według Ryanaira nie mogę zarezerwować lotów do listopada.

En casa-At home.

After a huge downpour of rain early this morning, the day was cloudy and then sunny off and on all day. We stayed at home watching movies, studying and just relaxing. The Polish parade celebrating Polish Constitution Day will be held this year on Saturday, May 5th starting at 11:30. I'm sure there will be a huge turnout for this event as there is every year.

Po wielkiej ulewie deszczu wcześnie rano, dzień był pochmurny, a następnie słonecznie i cały dzień. Mieszkaliśmy w domu, oglądając filmy, studiując i po prostu relaksując się. Polska parada z okazji Święta Konstytucji RP odbędzie się w tym roku w sobotę, 5 maja, od godziny 11:30. Jestem pewna, że na to wydarzenie będzie ogromna frekwencja, jak każdego roku.

Después de un gran aguacero temprano esta mañana, el día estaba nublado y luego soleado y encendido todo el día. Nos quedamos en casa viendo películas, estudiando y simplemente relajándonos. Flag Day

Tomorrow is Constitution Day in Poland so it is a National holiday and makes for a long weekend.

Today is Flag day. May 2nd is not a national holiday, however many Poles take this day off because it is the only date in the calendar which occurs between two national holidays. Various types of patriotic actions and demonstrations are organized on this day.

In recent years, it has become common to wear a national cockade on that day. This custom was popularized by the late President Lech Kaczyński. Then it was continued by Bronisław Komorowski, and now, the current President, Andrzej Duda is also maintaining the custom. A cockade is a knot of ribbons(red and white), or other circular- or oval-shaped symbol which is usually worn on a hat.

Jutro jest Święto Konstytucji w Polsce, więc jest to święto narodowe i trwa długi weekend.

Dzisiaj jest dzień flagi. 2 maja nie jest świętem narodowym, jednak wielu Polaków bierze na ten dzień wolne, ponieważ jest to jedyna data w kalendarzu, która ma miejsce między dwoma świętami narodowymi. W tym dniu organizowane są różnego rodzaju patriotyczne akcje i demonstracje.

OK, holiday today and only small stores open. Spent much time studying after speaking with Carmelo this morning for an hour. I made contact with a new potential Polish partner for Skype conversations, a young one, so we will see how that works out. In the past the young ones are not too reliable and don't last long. Maybe this one will be different.

Juan gave me an interesting point of view on those who say foreigners speak too fast in their own language and so it's hard to learn their language. That goes for any language, Spanish, English, Polish, German, Russian, etc. His point is that they do not speak too fast but that the learner does not really know the vocabulary that well and so it takes the brain a longer time to absorb each word and understand it. He's been teaching Spanish in London for 20 years, on 3 different levels, and with his beginner class he starts each class by saying, "Hola. Que Tal? Como Estás? Hello, How are you? At first he says it at the normal speed and they are lost to it's meanings. The next class he repeats it. The next time he repeats it but very slowly..."Ho....la. Que....tal?   Co...mo....es  tás? He tells them the meaning.  Continuous clases he speeds it up to the normal Spanish pace and they understand it all.

I have to agree with him. That is definitely the problem, not really knowing the meaning of the words so your brain doesn't have to translate it. I've been listening to one of his podcasts over and over again and each time I understand more of the words. It also helps to have a complete print out of the script. The podcast are for intermediate level people, which I am not, but it still helps me. If I lived in London, I would be studying with him.

OK, dzisiaj święto i otwarte są tylko małe sklepy. Po godzinnej porannej rozmowie z Carmelo dużo czasu spędziłem ucząc się. W pełni wydrukowany transkrypt również pomaga. Podcasty są przeznaczone dla osób o średnim poziomie zaawansowania, na którym nie jestem, ale pomagają mi. Gdybym mieszkał w Londynie, uczyłbym się z nim.

I don't know how Amazon.U.K. managed to do it but today DHL delivered the 1st book I ordered and an hour later UPS delivered the 2nd book even though I ordered them both at the same time. So now I have Easy Spanish and Advanced Spanish to work with along with Spanish Grammar, videos, audios, Español con Juan and conversations with Carmelo and Pablo. I think I have enough material.

A nice day for walking around and taking some pictures of the beauties of Spring so I did.  It's a lazy week in Poland with holidays on Tuesday and Thursday so that means a long weekend for many people.

Miłego dnia na spacerowanie i robienie zdjęć piękności wiosny, tak zrobiłem. To leniwy tydzień w Polsce z wakacjami we wtorek i czwartek, co oznacza długi weekend dla wielu osób.

Ahora tengo español fácil y español avanzado para trabajar junto con Gramática española, videos, audios, Español con Juan y conversaciones con Carmelo y Pablo. Creo que tengo suficiente material.


Un buen día para caminar y tomar algunas fotos de las bellezas de Spring, así lo hice. Es una semana de ocio en Polonia con días festivos los martes y jueves, lo que significa un fin de semana largo para muchas personas.

Wągrowiec

By noon most of the clouds had gone away so we decided it was time for a ride through the country to Wągrowiec, 1 hour north of where we live. The roads had very little traffic on them so the drive was without stress.  A big benefit at this time of the year is to see those fields of rzepak in their brilliant yellow color. We saw several of them along the way but not as many as in years before. Maybe it was crop rotation time last year. Nevertheless, what we saw was magnificent. The pictures can't even come close to the reality of these fields.

The town of Wągrowiec was founded as a small village called Prostynie by the Cistercian Monks from the monastery in Łekno in 1319. In 1381 the name of Wągrowiec is mentioned for the first time in connection with the place.

In 1835 the Cistercian monastic order was dissolved, and its property was confiscated by the Prussian authorities.

Following the end of the Polish Defense War of 1939, the town was annexed to the German Reich and its name was changed by the Nazis to Eichenbrück. Many of its Polish inhabitants were expelled to the more eastern areas. Wągrowiec was liberated in January 1945 and the expelled Polish inhabitants returned.

Missing him.

Never thought I'd be missing a barber but now I do. My hair and beard is out of shape and definitely need cutting but where to go? Who to trust that they can match my last haircut? What a dilema! I woke up early today so I got in some early studies because this morning is filled with conversations until 13:00 and the Carmelo again at 16:00. We talked last night for 1 1/2 hours and made the arrangement for today.

I received an sms from DHL that the books would be delivered today between 8:30 and 15:00. We were home all day waiting and no one came. Not exactly great service.! It was a beautiful day and we could have gone outside if not for DHL.

On the bright side, Carmen, the owner of the in Spain, said she would be happy to have us back next year. Now I just have to wait until May 1st to see if Ryanair will book April of next year's flights.

Nigdy nie myślałem, że będę tęsknić za fryzjerem, ale teraz mam. Moje włosy i broda są poza zasięgiem i zdecydowanie wymagają cięcia, ale gdzie iść? Komu ufać, że mogą dopasować moją ostatnią fryzurę? Co za dylemat! Que Lastima! Myślę, że po prostu weźę ze sobą powyższe zdjęcie, kiedy pójdę i powiem im, że chcę znowu tak wyglądać.

Nunca pensé que me estaría perdiendo un barbero, pero ahora lo hago. Mi cabello y mi barba están fuera de forma y definitivamente necesitan cortar, pero ¿a dónde ir? ¿En quién confiar para que coincidan con mi último corte de pelo? ¡Qué dilema! Que lastima ! Creo que me llevaré la foto de arriba cuando vaya y les diré que quiero verme así otra vez.


Me levanté temprano hoy así que obtuve algunos estudios iniciales porque esta mañana está llena de conversaciones hasta las 13:00 y el Carmelo nuevamente a las 16:00. Hablamos anoche durante 1 hora y media e hicimos los arreglos para hoy.


Recibí un sms de DHL que decía que los libros se entregarían hoy entre las 8:30 y las 15:00. Estuvimos en casa todo el día esperando y nadie vino. No es exactamente un gran servicio.! Fue un día hermoso y podríamos haber ido afuera si no fuera por DHL.


En el lado bueno, Carmen, la dueña de la en España, dijo que estaría feliz de tenernos de regreso el próximo año. Ahora solo tengo que esperar hasta el 1 de mayo para ver si Ryanair reservará los vuelos de abril del próximo año.

Good day.

Somehow the 2 Spanish books I ordered got lost in transit between Wednesday and today even though they were in Poznan. They called to deliver them Wednesday but I said I wouldn't be home for an hour. As of today, checking the tracking, it showed they were delivered. Using Amazon Live Chat they told me they were lost in transit and they would have 2 new copies here by Monday at no charge. That was good to hear but still can't comprehend how they can be in possession here in Poznan and get lost in transit when they told me they had them.

I spent a few hours studying, had 2 conversations, 1 in Polish and 1 in Spanish and tonight I skype with my Spanish partner, Carmelo. Joan was busy making a new dinner, Chicken au Gratin, for tonight. Pablo, my earlier Spanish partner, said I did well translating my English sentences into Spanish today. That was good to hear. It's great being able to feel progress learning the language.

Thanks to those of you for the birthday wishes. Almost 3/4 of a century.  25 more and I'll be old.

W jakiś sposób 2 hiszpańskie książki, które zamówiłem, zaginęły w dostawie od środy do dzisiaj, mimo że były w Poznaniu. Zadzwonili, że dostarczą je w środę, ale powiedziałem, że przez godzinę nie będzie mnie w domu. Począwszy od dzisiaj sprawdzanie drogi przesyłki pokazało, że została dostarczona. Skorzystałem z usługi Amazon Live Chat, gdzie powiedzieli mi, że zaginęła podczas transportu, a do poniedziałku otrzymają bezpłatnie 2 nowe egzemplarze bez opłaty. Dobrze to usłyszeć, ale wciąż nie pojmuję, jak mogą  być tutaj w Poznaniu i zgubić się w dostawie, kiedy powiedzieli mi, że je mają.

Spędziłem kilka godzin na nauce, miałem 2 rozmowy, 1 po polsku i 1 po hiszpańsku, a dziś wieczorem skypuję z moim hiszpańskim partnerem, Carmelo. Joan była zajęta przygotowywaniem nowej kolacji na dzisiejszy wieczór - Chicken au Gratin,. Pablo, mój hiszpański partner, z którym rozmawiałem wcześniej powiedział, że dobrze dziś przetłumaczyłem swoje angielskie zdania na hiszpański. Było dobrze to usłyszeć. Wspaniale jest móc poczuć postępy w nauce języka.

De alguna manera, los 2 libros en español que pedí se perdieron en tránsito entre el miércoles y el día de hoy, a pesar de que estaban en Poznan. Llamaron para entregarlos el miércoles, pero les dije que no estaría en casa por una hora. A partir de hoy, al verificar el seguimiento, mostró que fueron entregados. Usando Amazon Live Chat, me dijeron que se habían perdido en tránsito y que tendrían 2 copias nuevas aquí el lunes sin costo alguno. It's a GO.

Our friend, Stash, visited us today for an hour and we showed him some pictures of our time in Spain. He, like myself, really liked the haircut I received there. I miss that barber. I'm afraid to go to one here but I will have to, soon.

After he left we went food shopping for the week, cost 111 PLN($32)(26Euro).

Joan confirmed staying in the same place in Spain next year is our best option so the plan has been set in motion. When I showed her cost comparisons of other locations it didn't take long for her to make up her mind. Like I said before, she's a practical person. We can accommodate her daughter staying with us for 2 weeks during Easter as there is a pull-out bed in the sofa. The weather will be warm enough by then and she will have a great time with us.

Nasz przyjaciel Stash odwiedził nas dzisiaj na godzinę. Pokazaliśmy mu trochę zdjęć z naszego pobytu w Hiszpanii. Jemu, tak jak mnie, podobało się moje strzyżenie włosów, jakie zostało tam zrobione. Tęsknię za tamtym fryzjerem. Obawiam się pójść do jakiegoś tutaj ale wkrótce będę musiał.

Sorry for missing yesterday but I was running around doing "honey do" things most of the day.

One thing I was able to see was an abundance of my most favorite weed, the dandelion. It's brilliance of color is apparent everywhere now and is equal to the forsythia bushes in all places.. The only scene that outshines them are the fields of rzepak(rapeseed). They are not visible yet but when they are we always take a ride into the countryside to view them. It's not only the color that is so fantastic but the aroma of the flower is overwhelming. My friend, Radek, has seen many of these fields in his life but has never walked though one of them to experience the smell of the plant. I told him he has to stop, get out of his car and walk among one of those fields. The aroma will take his breath away.

I am a planner. Already I am making plans for next years stay in Spain. The first question was for Joan. Where/what location do you prefer? When I know that I can proceed to search for a place to stay. Major cities are out of the question because they are too expensive. Cities like Malaga, Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Sevilla, etc. Myself, I prefer the small town like Santiago where you have a chance to speak with local people and maybe form a relationship with some. I'm hoping she will want to return there but I will not influence her decision. Anyplace in Spain will do. Well, not just anyplace.

We watched an interesting movie last night with Adrian Brody and Penelope Cruz. It was about the love affair between the great bullfighter, Manolete, and his lover the years before he died in his last bullfight in 1947. I knew about Manolete from the years I lived in Spain, 1962-64. Even then they still told great stories about him but I never knew much about him other then he was the greatest bullfighter, ever.

Przepraszam za nieobecność w dniu wczorajszym, ale kręciłem się „robiąc słodkie” rzeczy  przez większość dnia.

Jedną z rzeczy, którą mogłem zobaczyć, była obfitość mojego ulubionego chwastu, mniszka lekarskiego. Blask kolorów widoczny jest teraz wszędzie i jest równy krzakom forsycji we wszystkich miejscach. Jedyną widokiem, który ich prześciga, są pola rzepaku. Nie są jeszcze widoczne, ale kiedy są zawsze jedziemy na wieś, żeby je zobaczyć. To nie tylko kolor jest tak fantastyczny, ale także przytłaczający aromat kwiatu. Perdón por haberme perdido ayer, pero estaba corriendo haciendo cosas "cariño" la mayor parte del día.

Una cosa que pude ver fue la abundancia de mi hierba favorita, el diente de león. Su brillo de color es aparente en todas partes ahora y es igual a los arbustos de forsitia en todos los lugares. Back in the saddle.

We are happy once again! Radek came over at 8:30 and we went tp the parts department of the Fiat dealership to get a new battery for the ignition key. The man said he didn't think that was the problem but sold Us the battery anyway, cost 20PLN. He then said he thought it was the car's battery and he had a man who would take a new battery and go with us to change batteries. With the new battery installed the car immediately started. However, the man said the battery was not strong enough for long use with air-conditioning and recommended going back to the dealer for the appropriate one. We went back, he put in the battery and we were done by 9:15. Cost of the battery, 270PLN. He also said that if we did not take an occasional long drive during the winter, the battery would lose power and maybe that is why it died. I couldn't help but think of the 2 months the car sat in the garage during the cold winter with no movement at all. Maybe that was the cause of the battery's demise? Our first car went 7 years with no battery problem but it was always moving in the winter.

After that problem was solved I took the bus to the local tax office to file our forms only to find out it had moved to new offices near Stary Browar on Strzelecka street. A bus trip with transfers would take too long so I drove and parked underground in Plac Wolności. A short walk downhill on Podgórna street to Strzelecka, 2 minutes  to get the forms accepted and I was on my way back home to do some studying. I started listening to podcasts from a website, Espańol con Juan. I can understand about half of what he says so I'm repeating it until I understand it all. I like the humor he puts into his podcasts. I got enthused about him because of this video,,,,,,,,https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HbF5qVYy72g&t=235s.  Joan loves it even though she doesn't understand much but it puts her in a good humor. He's very passionate.

Road to Biedrusko

We went for a nice ride today on  a road not used much by cars but a lot by bicycles. It goes from Zlotniki to Biedrusko, about 15 kilometers. We only saw 2 other cars on the way but many bicycles. An interesting discovery was the ruins of an old church from the village of Chojnicy. Naturally I had to stop and take pictures while Joan waited in the car. I found out some of the history of this old church.

The ruins of the church are located in the former village of Chojnice and now a military training ground in Biedrusko. Once a lively village, a parish of several nearby villages such as Biedrusko or Suchy Las, today the ruins of the church are in the center of the military training ground without any trace of any other buildings and a few cemeteries forgotten in the forest.

The exact date is not known of the erection of the parish in Chojnica. Church documents show that this took place at the turn of the 11th-12th centuries.

At the beginning, Chojnica was the center of several smaller estates related by neighborhood, the so-called opole center (opole - an opolna organization, in the twelfth-thirteenth century settlement unit of western Slavs) and had its parish church p.w. St. John the Baptist (X-XI century) - this church is mentioned in the sources before 1374 and it may have existed already in the 11th century.

Today there is a new church in the town of Swadzim.

After that, we stopped at Sowa's for a little refreshment and were stunned when we tried to go home and the car wouldn't start. The battery appeared dead and neither of us brought our phone with us. I had no choice but to ask one of the girls in Sowa's to call a taxi for us to go home. Tomorrow my friend Radek will assist me in getting the problem taken care of.

75F, sunny, beautiful day to go to th2e rynek and see what has developed there. It turned out a little sad because our favorite outside café no longer exists. Café 55, Room 55, 55 is gone, taken over by another restaurant that is not open yet. We spent more than a few years there drinking Café Mrzona's, talking with friends and meeting new people, not to mention developing good relationships with the waiters/waitresses. Now we must search for a new place.

It was not the only casualty of last year. Three more restaurants have closed and opened under new management including Shark. Another interesting development is that the renovation of the palace by Harrods of London seems to have stopped. All of the materials have been removed and now the palace sits as it has for the last ten years, looking like it's in decay. What a pity.

To brighten our spirits we walk a short distance to Aleja Marcinkowskiego where they have planted hundreds of hyacinths in different colors. We sat on a bench for a while to take in the aroma of the flowers and then I took the pictures.
