 Today I learned that our region has the highest rate of coronavirus infections.

In our province, the infection rate per 100,000 inhabitants over 7 days is as high as 71.7. Meanwhile, last week the Prime Minister announced that the national quarantine will be introduced in Poland just when the average number of cases per 100,000 people within 7 days nationwide exceeds 70. Over 70, apart from Wielkopolska, were also recorded in the Kujawsko-Pomorskie and Śląskie voivodships. Nationally, the average was 62 on Sunday, and 59.2 the day before, which means that we can reach 70 in real terms on Wednesday, November 11.

In Wielkopolska, our region,  the highest average disease per 100,000 inhabitants during the last week is recorded in Chodziez and amounts to 114.5. The next one is Nowy Tomyśl with an index of 100.8, followed by Grodziski (98), Piła (96.7), Leszno (92.9), and Poznań (92.6).

In the northern part of Poznań, Morasko, 48 Catholic nuns are infected. This is especially troubling because some of the nuns teach religion classes to kindergartners. However, the priest who lives next to them in a separate building, says he is not infected.

This is not good news, at all. The necessary protests did not help the situation. I suppose if a national quarantine goes into effect, they will stop. Nothing else has stopped them but have they accomplished anything? That is my question.

 Yesterday was a day of rest from the celebrating, watching TV media, and opinions of both CNN, Fox News, NHK, DW, France, or other stations.  Nice German pancake breakfast at 10:30, exercise with Joan, and watching a Heal video about alternative ways to heal the body. One interesting thing I found out about was the Omega-3 fatty acids. They are a major structural component of the brain.  They help in neurodevelopment, cognition, and neurodegenerative disorders. I will buy some and see if it helps Joan.

Tomorrow is the chosen day to clean the dining room and ALL of the windows in the flat. Not a favorite thing to do but it has to be done. We have 10 windows. 

Here we are into November and the gray days for the next 4 months are upon us. The last 3 years we had the good fortune to leave for Spain in January and come back at the end of March or April. This year it's not possible with Joan's condition. The water bill came today for the last month, 79PLN-{$21}. 

Radek will come tomorrow for a face to face meeting. It's been a month since our last one and I know he wouldn't come if he had any symptoms of Covid-19. We have been using Whatsapp but the connection is bad.

5 days.

 I don't know if you can call it stress but whatever it is, I feel it. In past elections, there was never so much at stake. It's not just about selecting a new President. For me, it's about saving the whole process of democracy based on morals, responsibility, truth, and doing what I feel is right for America. I feel no bones about voicing my opinion on Saturday only. I may have slipped a little this last week since voting began but I tried to stay away from politics. I am hoping this kind of Saturday blog will end soon because I am tired of writing them. Even though I chose to live in the land of my ancestors, I still care about the country. Joan, having children and grandchildren still living there, certainly is part of the reason.

Only once in my voting lifetime, have I voted for a President that I really believed in, JFK. Usually, it was voting for the lesser of 2 evils. In Poland, there are several parties to choose from. Although, there are really only two parties whoever wins, either PiS or PO. Yes, America does have an Independent party but only once did it ever have a chance to win. Also, in Poland, you don't have to be extremely rich to run for the Presidency. In America, it's a must situation.

Normally, you know who the new President will be the next day in America. Now it is five days since the election and we still don't know. The Electoral College doesn't vote on a President until December 14th. Even though one candidate wins the popular/majority of the votes, it is the EC that actually confirms who the President is. That was the case when the Gore/Bush election happened. Gore won the popular vote but gave the Presidency to Bush.

We've been going through each day normally with an occasional check to see how the election is going. Joan does her exercises, reads a little. rests, watches TV, and I do all the housework, study, sit with her off and on, and just care for her.

A late note. It's obvious now, after seeing the updated vote tallies in the 4 battleground states of Pennsylvania, Georgia, Nevada, and Arizona, Joe Biden is the new President-elect. Now the focus should be on 2 special elections, January 5th, where 2 Democrats are trying to win seats in the Senate. If they do, the Senate majority will be Democratic.

As already reported, we currently have 7, 762 active, diagnosed cases of coronavirus in our city. It is essential that these are diagnosed cases, and therefore confirmed by a test. There can be many more undiagnosed ones. Almost 1,100 new infections arrived in the city within 24 hours. Jacek Jaśkowiak referred to this.

"This increase in infections is very high. We must do everything to stop it because a lot still depends on us - said the president of Poznań. - I am asking you to keep your safety and to limit contacts to the immediate minimum - I also imposed on myself a number of restrictions on meetings with other people.  A little sunshine today makes the day better.  It's not cold, just a little chilly. It was sunny yesterday also but it seemed very gray with the early news that Trump was winning the election.

Now, it's 2 days after the election and we still don't know who will win. Both of the candidates have a possibility to win. Not all of the ballots have been counted and we probably won't know until tomorrow night. Even with all Trump has done to obstruct the process of voting, it hasn't worked. Now he is suing the states where he thought he would win but didn't. He wants to stop the counting of votes in the states he is losing but the irony is, with Biden ahead, Trump would lose anyway. This is the craziest election in my lifetime.

Election day!

 The day of the most important Presidential election. We've done all we could. Now it's just waiting for the results. I don't remember being so worried about an election.

Dzień najważniejszych wyborów prezydenckich. Zrobiliśmy wszystko, co mogliśmy. Teraz tylko czeka na wyniki. Nie pamiętam, żebym tak martwił się wyborami.

Big Day for bureaucracy!

 Well, it WAS supposed to be a big day. I woke up at 09:00, helped Joan out of bed then prepared our breakfast of oatmeal, dates, cranberries, raisins, and grapes.  I wanted to leave at 10:30 to go and finally pick up my renewed permanent residence card.

I arrived at 11:00 but it seemed a little strange that there were only 2 people waiting outside of the building.  I approached the door and it was locked. Looking through the glass window, there was no one inside. I looked at the sign on the door and it said closed. How could that be? I was given my appointment time 3 weeks ago and received NO notice of the closure. At 11:15 I called to immigration and was #5 in line. In the meantime, more people arrived to pick up their cards. At about 11:45 a security guard came out and told us that nobody was in the building. I was still #5 in line on the phone. A little pissed off, I walked back to the parking lot and at 11:55 I was #4. I left the phone on and by the time I got home. 12:15, still #4. At 13:05, #2, at 14:00-next in line.

When I finally was answered, the person didn't speak Polish and wanted me to stay online until an English speaker was available. After waiting for another 1/2 hour, I hung up.

I searched the website for any information about why it was closed and then found out that as of today, my appointment day, ALL appointments are canceled due to Covid-19. However, it took a lot of searching to find that information. Why they didn't put that announcement on the front of the website is beyond my understanding. No, wait, I do understand, it's called customer service, something that is rare in Poland.

Now, I have no idea when I will get my card.

Cathy Zabinski

Cathy Zabinski, age 70, formerly of Gary and Whiting, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on October 29, 2020. She was a great human being. Cathy’s pride and joy were her daughters and grandchildren. She loved bingo and spent her ENTIRE life helping others. Cathy will be deeply missed.
She was preceded in death by her husband-Harry Zabinski. Cathy is survived by her two daughters-Heather (Charles) Nelson, Roxanne Saia; three grandchildren-Preston, Logan and Cooper; four sisters-Dr’s. Maureen and Topper Roth, Colleen Osborne, Eileen Osborne, Lori Osborne; one brother-Timothy Osborne; many loving nieces and nephews.

First-I received sad news yesterday that Cathy Zabinski, wife of cousin Harry who passed away a few years ago, has died after a long illness. Polish Origins

One of the things I like about social media is you can develop a relationship with someone you have never actually met in person. Such is the case between Zenon Zamerowski and myself. Shortly after we first arrived in Poland I met online with him. Over these last years, we have kept in occasional contact. Zenon and his wife started a genealogy research company to help people search for their roots in Poland. It was so successful that he added tours for people who wanted to come to Poland to see the places where their relatives and to meet some.

Like me, he had people asking about moving to Poland. Recently he wanted to add a page to his online newsletter about that. "The number of inquiries about obtaining Polish citizenship has risen dramatically in recent months. It may be a result of the genealogy research services we started to provide this March, but we are not sure if it is the only reason for the increased interest". 

Knowing Joan and I have experienced that, he asked if I would write something about our blog and I readily agreed.

 Yesterday 30,000 people in Poznań took part in the protest against the new law. 

Last Thursday, as the politicized Constitutional Tribunal ruled abortion in Poland to be practically illegal, the ruling Law and Justice party joined a coalition of largely illiberal and authoritarian governments to sign a US-sponsored anti-abortion declaration.

The declaration is an aftermath of Donald Trump's decision to withdraw American funding for international organizations promoting abortion rights, announced shortly after he stepped into office. Doubling down on his administration’s anti-abortion agenda, during the 2019 UN General Assembly, the US president said that "America will never tire of defending innocent life”

In the United States, the decision of the Trump administration to sign the document has met with wide criticism. Critics point out that the president is yet again joining the ranks of authoritarian governments.

Feminist organizations, on the other hand, responded with criticism. “If you thought you were already pissed off, we can’t possibly imagine how you’ll react after hearing this. The Polish government quietly signed us up to join an international anti-abortion coalition, and has kept it secret from the mainstream media! Poland has become one of only three European countries (along with Hungary and Belarus) that have signed the Geneva Consensus Declaration on „Promoting Women’s Health and Strengthening the Family”- the “Dziewuchy Dziewuchom” organization. I've been in computer hell for the last couple of days. I have 2 laptops, an ASUS and a Samsung. The latter is the newest, 3 years old. Now the Samsung isn't producing any sound through the speakers. I've tried everything I know how to fix it but no remedy. I use it for my Polish lessons and Skype. 2 months ago I had the hard drive changed from HDD to SSD, It works much faster now but without sound, I had to start using the ASUS laptop.

Wednesday morning, I turned it on, the MSN logo appeared, and then it went black.  Behind it I have a 23" external monitor plugged in. I like the bigger screen but I don't always have it plugged in. I took out the battery, unplugged and waited a few minutes before I restarted it. Again, nothing. Out of curiosity, I turned it off, plugged in the outside monitor, and again turned it on. On the laptop screen, black. However, the outside monitor turned on and worked, sound included but no camera or microphone. That wouldn't allow me to Skype or Zoom. I opened Skype and the little green signal for the camera came on the black laptop screen. It was working through the laptop, and so was the microphone and the external monitor gave me a good screen. The Samsung is back in the repair shop. I have a love/hate relationships with computers.

Yesterday, the President of Poznań appealed to employers not to discourage female workers from participating in the strike today. I have to applaud PiS for doubling the wages of the healthcare workers. They, the workers,  put their own lives in jeopardy every day caring for the victims. Even the President of Poland has tested positive now for Covid-19.

Tak wyglądał niedzielny protest. Co najmniej kilka tysięcy osób protestowało w niedzielę na ulicach Poznania przeciwko wyrokowi Trybunału Konstytucyjnego. Manifestanci z Placu Wolności przeszli na Ostrów Tumski, a później pod biura posłów PiS na ulicy Młyńskiej. W stronę demonstrantów ze strony policji poleciał gaz łzawiący.

So, Maybe you have no interest in the rush to put a new Justice of the Supreme Court in place before the election. A forced decision by the current administration could have far-reaching effects when the majority justices are conservative.

Here is one example of a countries Supreme Court called the Constitutional Tribunal. It has banned almost all abortions. The effect of that is it will mean an almost total ban. It already has one of the most restrictive laws. The majority of the court judges were nominated by one party, PiS.

The PiS(Law and Justice) party tried last year to do it but those were in pre-Covid-19 days and 100,00 people took to the streets, mostly women. Now, with Covid-19 raging, when there is a limitation of only 10 people in a public gathering,  it was easier to pass the law. It will be interesting today and tomorrow to see what happens on the streets.

Now, in the U.S. with almost certain confirmation of a new, conservative Justice by the Republicans, it will be the same situation when Roe vs.Wade goes before the Supreme court of that country.

Time to get my PSA level checked so I went to MedPolonia for a blood test.  The cost is 37 PLN($6) and in 10 minutes I'm done. I can get the results online the next morning. I have it done twice a year just before I see the urologist.

On the way there I  was thinking this will be the first year that we will miss one of the most important days of the year in Poland, November 1st. It's the day when I return to Golina to put flowers and candles on the graves of relatives and a friend who has died a few years ago. Next to Christmas and Easter, it's my favorite day of the year and I look forward to it each year, but this year is different. Joan is in recovery from the stroke/seizure and Covid-19 is still on the prowl looking for new victims. So, this year we will remain in our flat. I hope it is not the same next year.

While listening to the 1975 Koln concert by Keith Jarrett, Joan is doing word search puzzles and I'm here writing. The day outside is gray and a little chilly. Still, it's not really cold yet.

Two of our neighbors have installed 22 solar panels on their south-facing roofs today. It's nice to see, as in the pictures I took.

I didn't watch the last debate. I don't need the stress caused by the orange head.  I don't need to hear any more of his "conspiracy" theories or his lies. I was pleasantly surprised to see Biden get a surprise endorsement from the actor, Sam Elliott. He pissed off a lot of Trumpers who liked him.

Finally, an appointment.

Once again I was up at 4:45 in the early morning to go online and try to make an appointment. I was told the website is only open for 10 minutes but in reality, it was open until at least 06:30. Also, it's impossible to make an appointment 11 business days ahead. Dates are not open that far in advance. October dates were all taken but November 2nd was open. I chose 11:15 on that day to pick up my card. Another piece of bad information was that I would receive a confirmation email for the meeting. I didn't and it necessitated a phone call to immigration. They told me the system wasn't working for the email. Fortunately, I printed the confirmation information on my screen just in case. So, due to the pandemic, I will finally get my new card 8 months after I applied.

It was a warm day today, 23C, with the uns shining most of the day. It would have been a good day for a walk but not that os prevented. I know Joan would have liked it.

I made the usual early morning trip for food shopping and was not surprised at the total cost. 199PLN($52). I had to buy paper towels, balsamic vinegar, and laundry detergent, and that totaled 50 PLN so the actual cost of food was 149 PLN($37). We're having herbed pork cutlets with sweet potatoes, and zucchini, spaghetti, pizza, risotto, roasted chicken, and cucumber soup for 2 different days.  

Znowu wstałem o 4:45 wczesnym rankiem, żeby wejść do internetu i spróbować umówić się na spotkanie. Following the advice I got yesterday from immigration to go online between 06:00-08:00 to make an appointment, I did it at 06:01. All I got was a red circle going around for one minute and then a blank page. I tried 5 more times with the same result. I waited until 08:15 when the department was SUPPOSED to be open, called, and got no answer. After trying 5 more times, I sent an email to the secretary of the director relating my problems. At 08:45, I finally was connected.

This time, I was speaking to a man who, again, told me I have to call at 05:00 to make the appointment and the website is only open for 10 minutes. 10 minutes? Why only 10 minutes? After 10 minutes you only get a red circle. So, 2 different people telling me 2 different answers. This is normal in Poland. They don't seem to communicate with each other or are all told the same thing. That is bureaucracy in a nutshell in Poland. Tomorrow I will get up at 04:45 and try again. Oh, and one other thing, you have to make your appointment for 11 business days from the day you call. This procedure is all because of Covid-19. It affects every aspect of life now, and the number of cases here continues to go up.

Up at 4:45 this morning to make the appointment online to pick up my residency card. 5:01 I went to the website, followed the directions and, WALLA!, it didn't work. It wouldn't show ANY dates available in October, November, or December. There can't be that many people picking up residency cards!

I tried 2 more times, the same result but on the 4th try I could see dates open for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.  I chose Friday morning, 8:15. I entered my name and email address as indicated and saw there was a ticking time-limit clock. I proceeded to the bottom of the page where I had to click to accept the rules but nothing happened. Two more times were tried and finally accepted but before I could click the Reserved button a, "Time ran out" pop-up occurred and it was blocked from finishing. 

I went back into the site and could not get back to the page to enter my name although I tried 5 more times. Today the department opens at 8:15 and I've already been up since 4:45  so I was skeptical to go back to bed and sleep past their opening time. I want to talk to someone about that website.

8:45 Id finally was answered by immigration. They have so many people wanting to pick up their cards that immigration only opens up the website in the morning between 6-8 to make an appointment for the following 3 or 4 days. The girl said to try back tomorrow. That's better than waking up at 4:45.

12:45 So tired, I had a siesta until 17:00(5PM) Didn't want to cook tonight so it was pizza out of the box for dinner.

Today, I was supposed to pick up my new residency card. Knowing how this bureaucracy works, I called before I went. My notification just said the card was ready and I could pick it up. However, when I called, the man who answered said I first had to make an appointment. Then he said the computer system was opened at 5:00 in the morning to take appointments. I had to go online at that time. make the appointment and then 11 days later I could pick it up. Who makes up these systems that you have to get up at 5 in the morning and then wait 11 days before you can pick up the card. How idiotic!

After another restless night. I went to the local store to buy butter for the oven pancake. Looking at the recipe. I realized the problem with the previous pancake wasn't the olive oil, it was me. I forgot to put in 1/2 cup of milk. No wonder it turned out the way it did.

Later, I did the leg and balance exercises with Joan. 

She had a nice Skype conversation with her daughter and son last night. For the last 2 months, I've been using the feature of saving the video/audio of their meetings. I'll continue doing that and putting them on a pen drive that I will eventually send to Karen. I think it would be nice for her to have. I wish I had such a thing with my mother.

That was my thought today for breakfast. I wanted to make the oven pancake for Joan this morning. I broke the 3 eggs into the bowl, slowly whisked the 1/2 cup of flour into the eggs, and then discovered I didn' have the needed three tablespoons of melted butter. In fact, I forgot to buy butter. So, I thought I would use 3 spoons of olive oil not knowing what the outcome would be. It wasn't good. Instead of rising all around the edges of the pan to form a bowl-like appearance in 12-13 minutes, it just laid flat. I knew I was in trouble. It didn't get brown until the 25-minute mark when I took it out. I tried putting a fork in it and it was solid as a rock. I learned the hard way you can't substitute olive oil for butter. :-( In the end, we had muesli with blueberry yogurt for breakfast, :-)

Poland is considering lifting the ban on Sunday shopping to alleviate crowded stores during the week in this pandemic time. During the week, seniors ONLY can shop between 10:00-12:00 to make it safer for them. Them? It's funny I write them when we are part of them. :-) In the last 5 days, Poland has recorded its highest number of new Covid-19 cases at 8,099 and deaths in one day of 132 people. We are isolating as much as possible but tomorrow I do have to go to immigration to pick up my new residence permit. It's finally here.

In the afternoon, we finished watching the Borgias serial and Joan talked with her daughter.

 I didn't watch the two town hall meetings live. However, I did watch them via YouTube on Friday. What a contrast between the two candidates for the Presidency!

Once again the bully spent the whole time blaming Democrats for everything. He avoided every question by turning it into a Democratic fault. He continues to lie. For example, the question about Qanon. He said he knows nothing about that group. He is, unfortunately, the President. It's not possible for him NOT to know about that group. He IS the President. He only knows what he wants to know, just like his supporters. No hour has better illustrated the alternate reality in which Trump exists than those two town hall meetings.

Trump claimed the science is still out on wearing masks, despite the universal view of health experts -- including within his own administration -- that it can mitigate the spread of coronavirus.

He refused to say whether or not he believed Democrats were running a satanic pedophile ring, shrugging when pressed and saying only, "I have no idea."

He claimed with no evidence that ballots with his name on them had been found in garbage cans.

And he would not affirm that a conspiratorial tweet he retweeted claiming Osama Bin Laden is still alive is false, saying, "People can decide for themselves."

"I don't get that," moderator Savannah Guthrie said after that last equivocation. "You're the President, not somebody's crazy uncle."

Why should voters give him a second term? Instead of laying out what he'd do differently, Trump listed only what he'd accomplished so far and concluded with: "Next year is going to be better than ever before."

Biden used the town hall to focus on how his plans would affect ordinary Americans. It's the contrast Biden sought to offer voters: Sobriety in the face of Trump's outburst, and a connection to the concerns of low- and middle-income Americans who he says have been ignored by Trump.
