April 29-Plitwicie

Unfortunately I have been offline due to lack of internet connection at our stay in Plitwicie. The house we stayed in was very nice but without WiFi I was disappointed.

We left Zagreb at 10AM for our trip to the Park and it took us about 5 hours. We travelled through some very beautiful rolling hill country and saw some very interesting landscapes.  GPS couldn't seem to find the place but luckily the owner came in the morning and took us to where the car was.  We had a quick breakfast in a bakery, exchanged American money for Croation, set the GPS for our next destination and we were on our way by 10AM. We chose the fast route out of Zagreb and then other roads to Plitwicie.  Our friends were amazed at the beauty of the country, the quaintness of all the little towns or villages we travelled through and, in general, were very happy to be here.

I was the lead car since I had the GPS and drove like we normally do in Europe. More than a few times they commented I drove too fast but that's just the way we drive. I always kept track to them in my rear view mirror so I wouldn't lost them and slowed down for them to catch up.

We got into the national park about 3PM and used GPS to find the house we were to stay in but the GPS couldn't get it right so I had to stop in the village were the house was, show the paper with the address on it and a nice man called to the owner, told him we were there, then gave the phone to me. The owner spoke in English, told me how to redirect myself to his house and he would be waiting in the front yard.  We found the place with no problem, met the owner and moved our suitcases into the rooms we would occupy until May 2nd,

The house is nice, rooms big enough but no internet. That is not a good thing for me or you because I can't easily, or at all, post to my blog.  The only was around it was to go to the local restaurant where they have internet and post from there.

Tomorrow will actually be our first day exploring the park and waterfalls but it's going to be a great.

Trakoscan

Spent a really good day driving north of Zagreb to the village of Trakoscan to see what may be one of Croatia's nicest palaces.  Started in the 13th century, it has survived to this day and it is in in great shape with many rooms visible although all are not to be photographed.

The weather was exceptional, 22c, sunny and perfect for walking. We decided to take the back roads to get there and spent an hour and a half driving twisting and curvy roads through the small hills and mountains on the way there.  It was fun driving and no pressure since we had all day to make our travel and visit.  We spent about three hours there, saw everything we could, had a small lunch and then took the fast motorway back home.

Tomorrow we go to Plitwicie.

Spędziliśmy naprawdę dobry dzień jadąc na północ od Zagrzebia do miejscowości Trakoscan, aby zobaczyć  być może jeden z najpiękniejszych chorwackich pałaców. Powstał w 13 wieku, przetrwał do dziś i jest w świetnym stanie z możliwością zobaczenia  wielu pokoi,  choć nie we wszystkich można robić zdjęcia.

Pogoda była wyjątkowa, 22C, słoneczna i idealna na spacer. Aby dostać się do zamku, zdecydowaliśmy się pojechać inną trasą  i spędziliśmy półtorej godziny na krętych drogach wśród małych wzgórz i gór, na naszej drodze do celu. To była przyjemna jazda bez tego ciśnienia, jakie mieliśmy cały dzień, by przygotować naszą  podróż i zwiedzanie. Spędziliśmy tam około trzech godzin, zobaczyliśmy wszystko, co mogliśmy, zjedliśmy mały obiad, a następnie pojechaliśmy na autostradę, by wrócić do domu.

Jutro jedziemy do Plitwicie.

April 27-Zagreb

 

After a  six hour drive to Zagreb through many beautiful fields of rapeseed, we arrived at the airport to meet our friends from America.  We went to our flat where we would stay, put our clothes inside and then walk about 20 minutes to the main street of the town for dinner and wine. After we were done we walked back home and collapsed in our beds for a good nights sleep.  Tomorrow the real fun begins.

Trip to Bratisawa.

Well, finally made it to Bratisława but it was the longest nine hour drive I've ever made. Had a headache most of the way, got lost twice, even with GPS and didn't arrive until about 6:30 at night. Even with feeling bad most of the way, I still enjoyed the time spent getting through the Czech Republic's notrthern part of the country because of the mountians, topography and the many Winding roads with very little traffic.  Brno, of the the major cities in that country was filled with traffic jams and I couldn't wait to get out of there and move on the Bratisława.

We found our hotel without much trouble, got our room and went out for a quick pasta dinner before we returned to shower and go to bed.  Hotel Viktor located on Kremnicka street is a new hotel with nice rooms and a decent price, 139zl for two beds, one night. The room is spacious, air conditioned, TV, free WiFi and an elewator. Located within two blocks of walking are several restaurants.

OK, still sick but off we go tomorrow to Croatia.

OK, so like all winter I was fine, no cold, no cough, no running nose. As luck had it, Monday I woke up with all three.  Not only that, when I got out of bed my left leg was still asleep and when I walked into the living room it completely gave out.  I fell forward toward the wall, put my hand out to stop the body from hitting the wall and jammed my arm into my shoulder.  What a day!  So now I'm waiting to leave on vacation with a cold, jammed shoulder and headaches. It's funny but not funny. No way I can get to a doctor before we leave and no way to delay our departure because we absolutely have to be in Zagreb on Saturday to meet our friends from America. Is this a funny situation or what!

Joan's washed all the clothes we need, washed a sneakers, made a list of things to take and except for the newly developed health problems we're ready to go. It will be 25c and sunny in Zagreb on Saturday. Sounds great!

We had our last Kandulski meeting with Zbyszek today for about three weeks.

Przez całą zimę nie chorowałem,  nie było żadnego przeziębienia, kaszlu, ani kataru. Ale dobra passa minęła i w poniedziałek obudziłem się z wszystkimi trzema objawami naraz. Nie tylko to, bo kiedy wstałem z łóżka moja lewa noga wciąż spała i kiedy wszedłem do salonu całkowicie oddzieliła się od drugiej nogi.  Poleciałem do przodu w kierunku ściany, wyciągnąłem rękę, by zapobiec uderzeniu ciałem w ścianę i zablokowałem sobie rękę w moim ramieniu. Co za dzień! Więc teraz czekam na wyjazd na wakacje z przeziębieniem, zwichniętym barkiem i bólem głowy. To zabawne, ale nie śmieszne. Nie ma wyjścia, muszę się dostać się do lekarza przed wyjazdem i nie ma mowy, aby opóźnić nasz wyjazd, bo absolutnie musimy być w Zagrzebiu w sobotę na spotkanie naszych przyjaciół z Ameryki. Czy to zabawna sytuacja, czy co!

Joan wyprała wszystkie ubrania, których będziemy potrzebować, trampki, sporządziła listę rzeczy do zabrania i oprócz nowo ujawnionych problemów zdrowotnych -  jesteśmy gotowi do wyjazdu.
W sobotę w Zagrzebiu będzie słonecznie i +25C.
Dzisiaj mieliśmy ostatnie spotkanie ze Zbyszkiem u Kandulskich, teraz będzie trzytygodniowa przerwa.

Sad news started off my day. One of my favorite performers of my "hippie" years passed away yesterday. He wasn't a favorite only because he performed so well but also I liked his philosophy about life and how to live it.  It's always sad to learn a good person has left the planet, there are so many bad ones who remain with us. Dzień zaczął się od smutnej wiadomości. Jeden z moich ulubionych wykonawców z czasów "hippie" zmarł wczoraj. On nie tylko był moim ulubionym wykonawcą z powodu jakości występów, ale także podobała mi się jego filozofia  na temat życia w ogólności i sposobów życia.
Smutnym jest dowiadywanie się, że dobry człowiek opuścił naszą planetę, kiedy na niej jest tak dużo złych ludzi, którzy z nami pozostają.

Shopping.

Sunny day, not too busy. I washed the inside of the car and will do the windows on Wednesday in preparation for our departure to Croatia.

Tonight we're having traditional bigos for dinner. We did enough food shopping for our last three days here and Joan had to buy mascara but the kiosk was closed.  I searched out a salesperson and asked her to open it up so Joan could make her selection.  Fortunately the woman understood what I was saying and we didn't have a problem.

With warm weather here you see more and more grandparents and grandchildren out for walks and I really like seeing them.  The kids are always so cute to watch. We have a little play area just across from flat so it's easy to observe them.

Słoneczny dzień, niezbyt wiele zajęć. Wyczyściłem samochód w środku, a oknami zajmę się w środę w ramach naszych przygotowań do wyjazdu do Chorwacji.

Dzisiaj wieczorem - tradycyjnie, jemy bigos na kolację. Zrobiliśmy wystarczające zakupy na nasze ostatnie dni w Poznaniu a Joan musiała kupić mascarę, ale stoisko było zamknięte. Rozejrzałem się za sprzedawczynią i poprosiłem ją o otwarcie, by Joan mogła dokonać zakupu. Na szczęście kobieta zrozumiała, co mówiłem i nie mieliśmy problemu.

Przy sprzyjającej, ciepłej pogodzie można zobaczyć coraz więcej dziadków i babć spacerujących z wnukami, a ja naprawdę lubię na nich popatrywać. Dzieci zawsze miło jest oglądać. Naprzeciwko naszego mieszkania mamy mały plac zabaw więc łatwo jest je obserwować.

Late,

A late start on the blog tonight. My internet connection was down for several hours but I didn't have much to say. We spent most of the day at home and I made the final accommodation for return from Croatia.  Looks like the weather will average about 20-22c while we are there.  That's good enough.

Późne rozpoczęcie na dzisiaj blog. Mój internet był w dół przez kilka godzin, ale nie mam wiele do powiedzenia. Spędziliśmy większość dnia w domu i zrobiłem ostateczną zakwaterowanie na powrocie z Chorwacji. Wygląda na to pogoda będzie średnio około 20-22c, podczas gdy tam byliśmy. To wystarczy.

Renewal

Nice day today and I had to go back to the Plaza to exchange one pair of shorts that was too small. It's always an adventure doing something new and having to speak in Polish.  I didn't even ask if the sales clerk could speak English, I just started in Polish and was successful in making the exchange.  Good for me.

I talked last night on Skype with a cousin I haven't seen or spoken to in 56 years. Can you imagine that? 56 years...over half a century.  We spent some of our early youth together but then family "issues" came between families and it's taken all this time to get back in touch.  That doesn't really matter now, the most important is we had a conversation and we'll have another when our Croatia trip is over. She is from my Kazmierczak family line. I had contact with her brother until he passed away last year and also with her younger sister for a little while.

Ładny dzień dzisiaj i musiałem wrócić do Plaza wymieniać jedną parę spodenek, że była zbyt mała. To jest zawsze przygodą robi coś nowego i ma mówić w języku polskim. I nawet nie zapytać, czy urzędnik sprzedaży może mówić po angielsku, właśnie rozpoczął się w języku polskim i udało się co do wymiany. Dla mnie dobre.

Rozmawiałem wczoraj na Skype z kuzynem nie widziałem lub wypowiedziane w 56 roku. Czy można sobie wyobrazić? 56 lat ... od ponad pół wieku. Spędziliśmy część naszej młodości razem, ale potem rodzina "problemy" przyszedł między rodzinami i to zajęło tyle czasu, aby wrócić w kontakcie. To naprawdę nie ma znaczenia teraz, najważniejsze jest to, że mieliśmy rozmowę i będziemy mieć innego, gdy nasza podróż Chorwacja jest skończona. Ona jest z mojej linii Kaźmierczak rodzinnym. Miałem kontakt z bratem, aż zmarł w zeszłym roku, a także z jej młodszą siostrą na chwilę.

New clothes.

A little cooler day today and one spent mostly inside except for a trip to the Plaza to buy a few pair of new shorts. The ones I have are getting a little worn out after years of use so I thought it was time.  I had to look through four stores before I found what I wanted. I'm not a fan of shopping for clothes, unless they are for Joan.

This time next week we'll be on our way to Bratisława, Slovakia to spend the night and then drive the next morning to Zagreb where we'll meet our friends from America.  Looking at the weather forecast it seems it will be in the high sixties during our visit.

Trochę dni chłodniejsze i jeden spędził dziś głównie wewnątrz, z wyjątkiem podróży do Plaza kupić kilka par nowych szortach. Te, które mam są już trochę zniszczone po latach użytkowania, więc myślałem, że to był czas. Musiałem patrzeć przez czterech sklepach zanim znalazłem to, co chciałem. Nie jestem fanem zakupów na ubrania, chyba że są one dla Joan.

Tym razem w przyszłym tygodniu będziemy na naszej drodze do Bratysławie, Słowacja spędzić noc, a następnie jechać następnego dnia rano do Zagrzebia, gdzie spotkamy się z naszymi przyjaciółmi z Ameryki. Patrząc na prognozy pogody wydaje się to będzie w wysokich lat sześćdziesiątych w czasie naszej wizyty.

Cafes and hats.

 

25c outside, sunny, almost clear sky and just too nice to make our first coffee trip of the season to the rynek. I'd say maybe only a third are up and operational. I chose "Shark" this time because it was open and sat down for our first café mrazona(cold coffee with whipped cream). 

 

 While we were talking I remembered the hat shop that I passed last week while walking to the bus stop. It may seem a little strange but I really liked some of the women's hats I saw in the window then.  I mentioned it to Joan and asked if she would walk with me to the shop when we finished our coffee.  She agreed and so we walked down Wożna street to the store..  It was locked but after a minute a woman came and opened the door.  She was the owner and the hat maker.  One hat, the red one, immediately caught Joan's and my eye and she tried it on.  It fit perfectly, like it was made for her. I talked for a minute in Polish with the woman and asked the price.  Joan kept admiring the hat in the mirror and I could see she really like it so I agreed to buy it.  The hat maker then showed Joan the brown hat and again it fit perfectly.  Now, you have to understand that Joan buys very little in the way of new clothing for herself no matter how hard I try to get her too.  When I saw how much she like the hats we took them both.  The owner then proceeded to show us her workshop and hats in different stages of construction.  She said she had a son living in New Jersey and working in New York, showed us pictures of her shop, 25 years ago when she started and how the outside of the building had changed since that time.  When we were done talking we said goodbye, she invited us back to talk at anytime and Joan and I walked back through the rynek to our car.  I really don't know who was more happier with the hats she purchased, Joan or I.

25C na zewnątrz, słońce, prawie bezchmurne niebo i po prostu tak miło, aby zrobić nasz pierwszy w tym sezonie wypad na kawę na  Rynek. Tym razem wybrałem "Rekina" , ponieważ był otwarty i usiadłem na naszej pierwszej mrożonej kawie (zimna kawa z bitą śmietaną).
Podczas gdy rozmawialiśmy, przypomniałem sobie sklep z kapeluszami, który mijałem w zeszłym tygodniu idąc na przystanek autobusowy. To może wydawać się trochę dziwne, ale bardzo lubiłem niektóre kapelusze dla kobiet, jakie widziałam wtedy na wystawie. Wspomniałem o tym Joan i zapytałem, czy pójdzie ze mną do sklepu, kiedy skończymy pić naszą kawę. Zgodziła się i poszliśmy ulicą Woźną do sklepu .. Był zamknięty, ale po chwili przyszła kobieta i otworzyła drzwi. Ona była właścicielką i modystką. Jeden kapelusz, czerwony, natychmiast przykuł oko Joan i moje i żona przymierzyła go. Pasował idealnie, jakby robiony dla niej. Rozmawiałem przez chwilę z kobietą po polsku i zapytałem o cenę. Joan podziwiała kapelusz w lustrze i widziałem, że naprawdę jej się podoba, więc zgodziłem się go kupić. Następnie modystka  pokazała Joan brązowy kapelusz, który również  idealnie pasował. Teraz, musisz zrozumieć, że Joan kupuje bardzo mało nowej odzieży dla siebie ten sposób i to  bez względu na to, jak bardzo się staram, żeby ona to zrobiła. Kiedy zobaczyłem, jak bardzo lubi te kapelusze, wzięliśmy obydwa. Właścicielka pokazała nam swój warsztat i kapelusze na różnych etapach ich powstawania. Powiedziała, że ​​miała syna mieszkającego  w New Jersey i pracującego w Nowym Jorku, pokazała nam zdjęcia swojego sklepu sprzed 25 lat, kiedy zaczynała pracę i jak zmieniało się otoczenie na zewnątrz budynku od tego czasu. Kiedy zakończyliśmy rozmowę i żegnaliśmy się właścicielka zaprosiła nas na rozmowę w każdej chwili, po czym Joan i ja wróciliśmy z powrotem przez Rynek do naszego samochodu. I naprawdę nie wiem, kto był bardziej zadowolony z zakupionych kapeluszy Joan czy ja.

Nasi przyjaciele z Anglii, Jackie i Tony zrobili kilka wspaniałych zdjęć z ich ostatniej podróży do Barcelony, które umieściłem na prawej stronie bloga.

Back to normal.

Yesterday I spent most of the day changing some of the things in Window 8 that would make it easier for me to find like the Start Menu. It is really different from Windows 7 and takes some time getting use to so I didn't even get to my blog. I was bad!!! However, today is a different story and I'm fairly comfortable now with the new system and it does run faster. I'm starting to like the "Charms menu" which is really like to old start menu in Win 7.

Our time is getting shorter for our departure to Croatia and we're really looking forward to it.  This will be the longest trip for us as far as how long we'll be gone.

The administrator of our building was here on Monday and agreed that we needed a sealer put on the balcony floor tiles, hoping that would prevent another leakage problem for the poor neighbors who have suffered from this. I really, really hope it works.  It still seems a little strange that after having a complete new flooring put in two years ago we still have this problem.

The weather has certainly improved and flowers are starting to show up in different places. It's a welcomed site after the long winter March we just went through. Winter coats, caps, scarves and gloves have been put away and it's good to be wearing lighter clothing.

Naturally, the only thing we've been seeing on the news is the coverage of the Boston Marathon attack and the funeral of Margaret Thatcher. I have no sympathy for the coward or cowards who planned the attack. It doesn't matter where it took place, any attack like that against people, in any country is a cowardly act.

Last but not least.........maybe some good news........

The American Polish Forum posted the following announcement on its Facebook page:

 Wczoraj spędziłem większość dnia, zmieniając niektóre rzeczy w Windows 8, które sprawiają, że łatwiej mi znaleźć Menu Start. On naprawdę różni się od Windows 7 i potrzeba  trochę czasu by przyzwyczaić się do używania go tak, że nawet nie dostałem się do mojego bloga. Byłem zły! Jednak dziś to zupełnie inna historia, a ja czuję się w miarę komfortowo z nowym systemem, który  działa szybciej. Zaczynam lubić "menu Charms", które jest bardzo podobne do starego menu start w Windows 7.

Czas naszego wyjazdu do Chorwacji  jest coraz krótszy  i  naprawdę nie możemy się już doczekać. To będzie dla nas najdłuższa podróż w miarę, jak będzie trwała.

Administrator naszego budynku był u nas w poniedziałek i zgodził się, że potrzebne jest uszczelnienie płytek podłogowych  na balkonie, mając nadzieję, że zapobiegnie to  problemowi  przecieku do  biednych sąsiadów, którzy z tego powodu cierpią. Ja naprawdę mam  nadzieję, że to będzie działało. Nadal wydaje mi się trochę dziwne, że po tym jak zupełnie nowa podłoga została położona w dwa lata temu nadal mamy ten problem.

Pogoda polepszyła się i kwiaty zaczynają pojawiać się w różnych miejscach. To zadowalające po długim zimnym marcu, przez któryprzeszliśmy. Płaszcze zimowe, czapki, szaliki i rękawiczki zostały odłożone i dobrze jest nosić lżejsze ubrania.

Oczywiście, jedynymi wiadomościami, które oglądaliśmy były doniesienia z ataku podczas Maratonu Bostońskiego oraz  pogrzebu Margaret Thatcher. Nie mam sympatii dla tchórza lub tchórzy, którzy planowali atak. To nie ma znaczenia, gdzie miało to miejsce, każdy atak na ludzi, w każdym kraju jest  aktem tchórzostwa.

Ostatnie, ale nie najmniej ......... może dobre wieści ........
Amerykańskie Forum Polski opublikowało następujące oświadczenie na swojej stronie na Facebooku:

I'm back.

Alright, I'm finally back from the Microsoft dungeon and able to post again. With all the problems of blue screen, missing applications and IE9, the rough estimate for repair was well over 300 zl($100).  An option was mentioned to upgrade the system to Win 8 for a little over the 300 zl, 357. I decided I might as well do that and become familiar with the new OS system.  It takes some getting use to and already I have had to make a few changes to the desktop to make it more usable for me. It's kind of funny, every upgrade is suppose to make it more user friendly but in the end it's hardly ever true.

So I made the changes I wanted, spent the day getting use to the new system, re-installed the programs I normally use and at this time there is no blue screen occurring or missing applications. I can't tell you how frustrating it's been these last few days not being able to write this blog.  I guess I'm a blogmaniac. That must be a new word.

I woke up at 5:30 AM to check emails and was THRILLED to hear from someone I haven't heard from in many years and it was a great pleasure to read his email.  I answered it immediately.

Nareszcie wróciłem z powrotem z Microsoftowego lochu i mogę ponownie wstawiać posty. Z wszystkimi problemami niebieskiego ekranu, znikających aplikacji i IE9, przybliżony kosztorys naprawy wyniósł dobrze ponad 300 zł ($ 100). Została mi zasugerowana opcja uaktualnienia systemu na Windows 8 za około 300- 357. Postanowiłem, że równie dobrze mogę to zrobić sam i zarazem  zapoznać się z nowym systemem OS. Trochę potrwa, zanim się przyzwyczaję do korzystania z niego i już musiałem dokonać kilku zmian na pulpicie, aby uczynić go bardziej dla mnie użytecznym. To trochę śmieszne, kiedy przypuszcza się, że każde uaktualnienie jest bardziej przyjazne dla użytkownika, ale w końcu to prawie nigdy nie jest prawda.

Po zrobieniu zmian, jakich chciałem, spędzeniu dniu na przyzwyczajaniu się do nowego systemu, ponownej reinstalacji programów,  normalnie używam laptop i w tej chwili nie ma pojawiającego się niebieskiego ekranu lub brakujących aplikacji. Nie mogę powiedzieć, jakie to było frustrujące przez ostatnie kilka dni, kiedy nie byłem w stanie napisać tego bloga. Chyba jestem blogmaniac. To musi być nowe słowo.

Obudziłem się o 5:30, by sprawdzić pocztę i byłem zachwycony, kiedy zauważyłem mail od kogoś, z kim nie miałem kontaktu od wielu lat i to była wielka przyjemność przeczytać jego e-mail. Odpowiedziałem natychmiast.

Car repair and Northern Lights

The Spring rains began today on a high of 17c. At last!!

Two weeks from tomorrow we'll be on our way to Croatia and the car is now in the shop for brakes, a muffler, two new tires and a general checkup. That's not bad for having the car 5 years and the first major work to be done on it. It certainly has proved that a Fiat Panda is a good car to all of those who gave strong advice against buying it.

Coming back from the repair shop where I left the car this morning I had to take two buses but still was home in 20 minutes. The first bus, #91, was only a 5 minute wait and it took me to Wojska Polskiego street where I had to change to bus #64 to finish the trip. The total cost was about 6 zl($3) and it was quick and efficient on the new busses. It's very easy to get around Poznań on public transportation and even enjoyable not to have to drive.

In the place where we use to live, Michigan, there is a 5 mile bridge over a waterway connecting the mainland of Michigan with the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Ocassionaly it is possible to see the incredible Northern Lights as you see in the picture above the bridge. We spent many a night sitting outside in lounge chairs watching the myriad of scenes created by these gasious lights in the sky. Click on the picture to get a better view.

Dzisiaj spadł wiosenny deszcz  przy wysokiej temperaturze 17c. Nareszcie!

Za dwa tygodnie, licząc od jutra będziemy w drodze do Chorwacji. Samochód jest już w warsztacie do wymiany klocków hamulcowych, tłumika, dwóch nowych opon i  ogólnego przeglądu. To całkiem nieźle, jak na 5. letni samochód i pierwszą poważną wymianę części.  To z pewnością dowód na to, że Fiat Panda jest dobrym samochodem do wszystkich tych, którzy mają silne argumenty przeciwko kupieniu go.

Wracając z warsztatu, gdzie zostawiłem samochód dziś rano, musiałem jechać dwoma autobusami, ale byłem w domu w 20 minut. Pierwszy autobus nr 91, na który czekałem tylko 5 minut zabrał mnie na ulicę Wojska Polskiego, gdzie przesiadłem się na autobus nr 64, którym zakończyłem podróż. Całkowity koszt przejazdu to około 6 zł (3 dolary), a nowe  autobusy poruszają się szybko i skutecznie. Tym sposobem korzystając z transportu publicznego, bardzo łatwo objechać Poznań i nawet jest przyjemnie, kiedy nie musi się prowadzić samochodu.

W Michigan, w miejscu, w którym mieszkaliśmy, znajduje się 5. milowy most nad częścią żeglowną łączący stały ląd stanu Michigan z Górnym Półwyspem Michigan. Sporadycznie  można zobaczyć niesamowite zorze polarne, które widać na zdjęciu powyżej mostu. Spędziliśmy wiele nocy siedząc  zewnątrz na leżakach oglądając mnóstwo scen ze światłem na niebie stworzonym przez gazy. Kliknij na zdjęcie, aby uzyskać lepszy widok.

Attractions!

A reminder of the beautiful Alhambra in Spain. The problem with going back to Spain is that there are so many interesting places to visit but I'd hate to miss seeing the Alhambra again in Granada.  I've started re-reading the Tales of the Alhambra by Washington Irving and each time I read it I want to go back there. I have so many memories of when I first visited it 50 years ago when it was run down and people were living in it. I was too young then to really appreciate the value of the place and it's history. Since that time it has, of course, been restored and is a huge attraction for tourists but I still remember walking through it's gates for free and being able to roam around the place freely. Like the man said, "Youth is waisted on the young" and now I understand that.

There are so many places in Poland that could become tourist attractions if the government had the money to restore them. We've seen over 100 old palaces or castles and many are in need of being saved from complete ruin.  The ones that are restored are magnificient and we don't mind paying for tickets to see the inside of them because it only helps to preserve them for future generations as they become wiser and can understand their value.

We did our weekly shopping yesterday, cost was 129 zl for a week of food. Today we meet with our friend at Kandulski's and tomorrow I have to take our car into the repair shop to have it checked over before our trip.  I know for sure that it will need new brake pads put on the front and fluid added to the air-conditioner although we rarely use it. I'll leave the car for a day or two and take the bus back to our flat. Now I just have to remember which bus it was I took last time :-)

Wspomnienie pięknej Alhambry w Hiszpanii.  Problem z wyjazdem do Hiszpanii jest taki, że jest tak wiele ciekawych miejsc do zwiedzenia, a ja nie chciałbym ponownie przegapić zobaczenia Alhambry  w Granadzie. Zacząłem ponownie czytać bajki z Alhabry Washingtona Irvinga i za  każdym razem kiedy je czytam , chcę tam wrócić. Mam tak wiele wspomnień, kiedy pierwszy raz odwiedziłem ją 50 lat temu, gdy była zaniedbana, a ludzie w niej żyli. Byłem zbyt młody,  aby naprawdę docenić wartość tego miejsca i jego historii. Oczywiście, od tego czasu została odrestaurowana i jest ogromną atrakcją dla turystów, ale wciąż pamiętam przechodzenie przez  bramy za darmo i możliwość swobodnego poruszania się po tym miejscu. Podobnie, jak ktoś powiedział: "Młodzież jest ograniczena do młodych" i teraz to rozumiem.

Jest tak wiele miejsc w Polsce, które mogłyby stać się atrakcją turystyczną, gdyby rząd miał pieniądze, aby je odrestaurować. Widzieliśmy ponad 100 starych pałaców i zamków i wiele z nich wymaga ocalenia od całkowitej ruiny. Te, które są odnowione są wspaniałe, a my nie mamy nic przeciwko płaceniu za bilety, aby zobaczyć ich wnętrze , ponieważ  pomaga to zachować je dla przyszłych pokoleń, kiedy staną się mądrzejsi i zrozumieją ich wartość.

Wczoraj zrobiliśmy nasze cotygodniowe zakupy , których koszt  za żywność na tydzień wyniósł  129 zł. Dzisiaj spotykamy się z naszym przyjacielem u Kandulskich, a jutro muszę odstawić samochód do warsztatu, aby sprawdzić go  przed naszą podróżą. Wiem na pewno, że będzie trzeba dać nowe klocki hamulcowe z przodu oraz płyn dodawany do klimatyzacji, choć rzadko z niej korzystam. Zostawiam samochód na dzień lub dwa i wrócę z powrotem do domu  autobusem. Teraz muszę  pamiętać, jakim  autobusem wracałem ostatnim razem :-)

Building the cafes.

Finally they are setting up the outdoor cafes in the Rynek. Last year at this time they were all in place by now but this has been a cold and snowy March so they delayed the setup. I think we've finally seen our last snow of this winter and now only warmer weather lies ahead.  YIPPEEEEEEEEE!!

Unfortunately, one of our favorite basketball teams, Michigan, lost the Championship game last night and college basketball is over.  The game wasn't broadcast live to Europe but it was possible to watch a replay of the whole game. With the growing interest in basketball in Europe you would think they would broadcast it more here to promote the sport. It is possible to watch some live NBA games but they are usually at 2 or 3 in the morning and only if you cable includes such channels as Canal+ which ours does not. We could add it to our programs but the added cost isn't worth it for us.
Some American programs are broadcast here but the voices of each show are covered over by what they call a Lektor.  That is one person who speaks for all the characters in Polish and the English is too quiet to hear. We had a friend in Gdańsk who had a special extra box that allowed him to switch off the Lektor and hear the programs in the English language.

Wreszcie w Rynku rozstawiane są kawiarenki na zewnątrz budynków. W zeszłym roku o tej porze wszystko było rozstawione, ale teraz  był zimny i śnieżny marzec,  co opóźniło ich wystawienie. Myślę, że w końcu widać ostatni śnieg tej zimy i teraz tylko czeka nas cieplejsza pogoda. YIPPEEEEEEEEE!

Niestety, jeden z naszych ulubionych zespołów koszykarskich, Michigan, przegrał wczoraj Championship i jego udział  jest zakończony. Gra nie była transmitowana na żywo w Europie, ale  można było obejrzeć powtórkę z całej gry. Wraz z rosnącym zainteresowaniem koszykówki w Europie można by pomyśleć, że to będą więcej meczy transmitować i  promować sport. Można pooglądać na żywo gry NBA, ale są one zazwyczaj o 2 lub ​​3 w nocy i tylko wtedy, gdy kabel obejmuje takie kanały jak Canal +, które nasz nie posiada. Możemy dodać je do naszych programów, ale koszty dodatkowe nie są dla nas tego warte.

Niektóre amerykańskie programy są tutaj transmitowane, ale na oryginalne głosy każdego programu nałożony jest głos lektora. To jest jedna osoba, która czyta tekst wszystkich postaci w języku polskim a  język angielski jest tak wyciszony, że go nie słychać. Mieliśmy znajomego w Gdańsku, który posiadał specjalne dodatkowe urządzenie, które pozwoliło mu wyłączyć Lektora i słuchac programy w języku angielskim.

Half-marathon.

 

The 6th annual Poznań half-marathon took place last weekend with over 6000 runners from as far away as Kenya who was also the winner. Even with a temperature of only 12c it didn't stop the marathon. I remember when Joan and I use to be runners, it was also better to run in colder weather than hot.

 

Only a few weeks left until our departure to Croatia and now it's just a matter of time for my back to completely heal. It's going in the right direction. Today I was able to drive the car into town for the results of my PSA test (good) without any difficulty although a long nine hour drive wouldn't be possible yet. However sitting and walking is getting easier and I'm sure I'll be O.K. when it's time to go.

 

Yesterday we took a little walk and we watched a little boy playing in the last remaining snow with his father. Little kids are so cute.  He even said "Cześć" to us as we walked by him. That's the Polish word for "hello" in case you didn't know.

 

One astonishing thing for us in Poland is the variety of pizza's you can get. I mean pizza with pickles, cabbage, tuna, corn, gouda cheese, ham or kebab.  The best pizza we ever had was from an Italian restaurant named John's. Unfortunately they went out of business years ago but you can still get it from their carry-out business. I went to that resaturant ever since I was about 14 years old and was sad to see them finally close. They were located in a part of town with many bars and restaurants and over the years they all closed and were torn down except for John's. It was sad to see a street that once was so vibrant and notorius for it's businesses to be left with only one building standing and now that is gone also.  It was mainly due to shopping malls being built and business in that area dying because of them. I guess that's what they call progress. I think sometimes progress isn't always good.

 

6. coroczny Poznański Półmaraton odbył się w ostatni weekend z udziałem ponad 6000 biegaczy z tak odległych krajów, jak Kenia, z której biegacz był także zwycięzcą. Nawet temperatura  tylko +12C nie powstrzymała maratonu. Pamiętam, kiedy Joan i  ja uprawialiśmy biegi, to również lepiej było biegać w chłodniejsze dni niż w gorące.

Zaledwie kilka tygodni pozostało do naszego wyjazdu do Chorwacji, a teraz to tylko kwestia czasu, by całkowicie wyleczyć plecy. Wszystko zmierza w dobrym kierunku. Dziś bez żadnych trudności byłem w stanie  prowadzić samochód po mieście, by odebrać wyniki mojego testu PSA (jest w porządku), jednak długie dziewięć godzin jazdy nie byłoby jeszcze możliwe. Jednak siedzenie i chodzenie jest coraz łatwiejsze i jestem pewien, że będzie dobrze, kiedy nadejdzie czas wyjazdu.

 Wczoraj zrobiliśmy mały spacer i oglądaliśmy małego chłopca bawiącego się z ojcem na resztkach śniegu. Małe dzieci są takie słodkie. On nawet powiedział: "Cześć" do nas, jak przechodziliśmy obok niego. Cześć to polski odpowiednik  "hello",  w przypadku, gdybyście nie wiedzieli.

Water-Again

Still recovering from my back problem, I received a call last night that, once again, our neighbor below us has water on her wall directly below our balcony. It's the third year in a row and fixed three times but still the problem persists. We only rent our flat so the problem is really for the owner of it but I still feel bad for the young couple below us. The young woman is very pleasant and doesn't hold us responisble for it  I don't quite undestand how water is seeping through the tiles on the balcony since I did remove the snow and ice from two feet in front of the wall last Wednesday night resulting in my back problem now.  The owner was suppose to come over today and we've been waiting all day for him.

Maybe Spring has finally arrived today with a high of 12c and a sunny day. Now we're looking forward to the opening of the botanical gardens again so we can go for a Spring walk there.

On the Expats Blog someone named Mark left a nice comment but said I didn't welcome his comments. I don't remember anyone named Mark leaving comments on my blog. There was a person who only left his/her comments as "Anonymous" and I did not publish them because I considered them rude. He or she will probably comment about this post and most likely I won't publish them either.

Nadal wracam do zdrowia po moim wypadku z plecami. Mimo to odebrałem w nocy telefon , że po raz kolejny naszemu sąsiadowi pod nami pojawiła się woda na ścianie bezpośrednio poniżej naszego balkonu. To już trzeci rok z rzędu i trzy razy było naprawiane, ale problem nadal występuje. My tylko wynajmujemy nasze mieszkanie, tak że problem jest naprawdę właściciela, ale nadal czuję się źle wobec młodej pary pod nami. Młoda kobieta jest bardzo przyjemna i nie obarcza nas za to odpowiedzialnością. Ja nie bardzo rozumiem, jak woda sączy się z płytek na balkonie, ponieważ ja usunąłem śnieg i lód na 60 cm przed ścianą w ostatnią środę, co skończyło się kontuzją moich pleców. Spodziewamy się dzisiaj wizyty właściciela i czekamy na niego cały dzień.

Może dzisiaj wiosna nareszcie nadeszła, skoro mamy około12C i słoneczny dzień.

Na blogu Expats ktoś nazywany Mark zostawił piękny komentarz, ale powiedział, że nie przyjęli jego komentarzy. Nie pamiętam nikogo o imieniu Mark, który pozostawił komentarze na moim blogu.  Była osoba, która pozostawiła jego / jej komentarz jako "Anonimowy" i ja go nie opublikowałem, bo uważałem go za niegrzeczny. On lub ona prawdopodobnie skomentuje ten post i najprawdopodobniej nie będę go także publikować .

What happened.

What happened, exactly, was this.  On our balcony was a lot of snow and ice melting. The drain was covered in ice so the water was building up. I didn't want water seeping through the floor to our downstairs neighbor so I decided to showel what I could over the balcony to the ground below.  When I was done I went inside to plug in an external drive to our DVD player. I bent over and felt a lot of pain through my lower back. So much pain that I was not even able to stand up. Joan helped me up but every step I took was painful and sitiing down was impossible. I went to lay down in bed and have been here since Thursday. Today I was able to get out of bed without Joan's assistance and walking was pain free but I still feel my lower back when sitting. I tried a call to our doctor but as yet have had no response. I think maybe it's a slipped or ruptured disc and it will take some time to heal.

On our last meeting with Zbyszek he told us about an English TV series he's been watching so I looked it up on the internet and found the first three seasons. It's called "Downton Abbey" and we like it, mainly because of the house/mansion featured in the series. It's a beautiful, real place named Highclere Castle in the northwest of England. Because ot the TV series it is a popular place to visit now and all tickets for the summer of 2013 are already sold out.

Zdarzyło się dokładnie tak. Na naszym balkonie było dużo topniejącego śniegu i lodu. Odpływ był pokryty lodem, więc woda gromadziła się. Nie chciałem, by woda przeciekała  przez podłogę do sąsiada na dole, więc postanowiłem odszuflować  to, co mogłem przez balkon na ziemię. Kiedy skończyłam wszedłem do mieszkania, by podłączyć zewnętrzny dysk do naszego odtwarzacza DVD. Kiedy  pochyliłem się,  poczułem ogromny  ból w dolnej części moich pleców. Tyle bólu, że nie byłem w stanie nawet wstać. Joan pomogła mi wstać, ale każdy krok był bolesny, niemożliwe także było siedzenie. Poszedłem położyć się do łóżka i byłem w nim już od czwartku. Dziś byłem w stanie wstać z łóżka bez pomocy Joanny i chodzenie było bezbolesne, ale nadal czuję dolną część pleców podczas siedzenia. Próbowałem połączyć się z naszym lekarzem, ale jak na razie nie ma odzewu. Myślę, że może dysk wyślizgnął się lub pękł i trochę czasu upłynie zanim się zagoi.
 
Na naszym ostatnim spotkaniu  Zbyszek powiedział nam o angielskim serialu, jaki oglądał więc poszukałem go w internecie i znalazłem pierwsze trzy sezony. Jest zatytułowany "Downton Abbey" i nam się podoba, głównie ze względu na pokazywany dom / mieszkanie  w serialu. To jest piękne, prawdziwe miejsce nazwane Highclere Castle w północno-zachodniej Anglii. Emisja serialu spowodowała, że jest to popularne miejsce do odwiedzania i wszystkie bilety na lato 2013 są już wyprzedane.

After a long time we once again met with our friend, Zbyszek, at Kandulski's to restart our weekly meetings. After talking for about an hour and a half the best news was that I will start my Polish lessons with him again this Friday.  Thee worst news was that his mother died last Sunday at the age of 94.

I received a message from a company in Germany that wants to publish my blog as a book. I'm not sure if it's a legitimate request and really don't know how the things I have written over the last 6 years would generate any interest in reading them in a book. Well, Ok, maybe someone wanting to move to Poland would find them interesting but I don't think there are a lot of people wanting to make that kind of move. In the last 6 years I've only talked with four who said they wanted to and only one has.

Po długim czasie po raz kolejny spotkaliśmy się z naszym przyjacielem Zbyszkiem u Kandulskich, by wznowić nasze cotygodniowe spotkania. Po około półtoragodzinnej rozmowie  najlepszą wiadomością było to, że zacznę moje z nim lekcje polskiego ponownie w ten piątek.  Najgorszą wiadomością była ta o tym, że jego matka zmarła w niedzielę w wieku 94 lat.
 
Otrzymałem wiadomość od firmy w Niemczech, która chce publikować mojego bloga w postaci książki. Nie jestem pewien, czy jest to uzasadnione żądanie i naprawdę nie wiem, jak rzeczy, które napisałem w ciągu ostatnich 6 lat na tyle wzbudziłyby jakieś  zainteresowanie, by czytać je w książce. No dobrze, może ktoś, kto chce przenieść się do Polski znajdzie w nich coś ciekawego, ale nie sądzę, istnieje wiele osób, którzy chcą wykonać taki rodzaj ruchu. W ciągu ostatnich 6 lat rozmawiałem tylko z czterema, którzy powiedzieli, że chcieli i tylko jeden ma.
