Oliwia in Luton.

Our last day in England we took the train, the underground tube and a train to Luton to visit with cousin Oliwia. We spent about 5 hours there with Oliwia and her friend, Christopher Catto.  We walked around the little city, had something to eat  and then took the train back to our friends house.  In the morning we got up early and started the long drive back to Poland.

Nasz ostatni dzień w Anglii wzięliśmy kolejowego, metra rury i pociąg do Luton by bywać z kuzyna Oliwia. Spędziliśmy tam około 5 godzin z Oliwia i jej przyjaciel, Christopher Catto. Szliśmy wokół małego miasta, było co jeść, a następnie wziął pociąg do naszego domu przyjaciół. Rankiem wstaliśmy wcześnie i zaczął długo wracać do Polska.

Hampton Court

King Henry VIII invited us to Hampton Court Palace today.  Actually it was a group of actors playing the parts of the King, his new wife Anne and a few others that invited all visitors to Hampton Court Palace to the  audience room and banquet hall.  There they put on a little skit of what an hour might have been like in the presences of Henry VIII.  It was entertaining but, of course, the palace itself was the most entertaining of all with it's many rooms and differents styles of different periods.  We spent the whole day there and returned home in the evening.

Tower of London.

It's everything you ever heard about it plus more.  It's the home of the most gruesome tortures devised by man and the place of many murders and executions.  The complex is much bigger that I thought it would be.  It is not just one tower but four.  Surrounding it are many other buildings including one that houses the more most precious crown jewels.  We were allowed to see the crowns, scepters and othe items.  You stand on a conveyor belt and it takes you by all the precious stones.  It's as good as you want it to be.

But , of course, the Tower is about the murders and executions that took part here.  You stand in the place where Anne Boleyn lost her head, where two nephews were murdered so their uncle could take the crown.  THAT'S why people come here each day, to see Traitors Gate where the prisoners arrive in a boat on the Thames river and never leave again, with their head in tact.

We spent five hours in this tower and surrounding buildings and  could have spent five more.  Tomorrow the King has summoned us to Hampton court so we shall go there to meet him.

Mogliśmy zobaczyć korony, berła i othe przedmiotów.

Jutro Król wezwał nas do sądu Hampton więc pójdziemy tam, aby go spotkać.

Leeds Castle

Today we visited the beautiful castle of Leeds.  It's in the English countryside about an hour's drive from here.  About six miles southeast of Maidstone, on the A20, stands Leeds Castle, situated on two islands in a lake, formed by the River Len. It has been described as "the loveliest castle in the world." While that claim might be open to some debate, it is certainly a beautiful building, well worth seeing. Constructed in the twelfth century to be an impregnable stronghold, it became known as "Lady's Castle" because of who occupied it. Its royal residents include Eleanor and Margaret, the wives of Edward I, Philippa of Hainhault, wife of Edward III, Catherine de Valois, Henry V's wife, Catherine of Aragon, first (but not last) wife of Henry VIII, and Elizabeth I, who was imprisoned here, for a time, before her coronation.

The gatehouse with its barbican and drawbridge are the most fortress-like features of the castle. The rest, looks like what it was chiefly used for, a residence. A tour of the castle will give a whole new perspective on what life in a royal castle might have been like. There are no drafty towers, here, no rats skulking about, no dank, dungeon-like rooms. Tapestries cover the walls, fireplaces roar and there is a general atmosphere of warmth, gentility and comfort.

The castle still serves as a residence, today, but is also used as a corporate conference center, with full-service meeting areas and banquet facilities available.

There was a lot to photograph and 287 pictures are in the slideshow.

London visit 1

A big day in London today.  We took the train about 10AM and an hour later we were in London at Victoria Station.  From there walked to Buckingham Palace but only to see the outside because we didn't want to stand in line to get in.  It's a huge place with lots of people still hanging around after the royal wedding last week. In one of the pictures you can see they have not dismantled the green television booths yet.  There was a changing of the guard to be performed but instead we walked over to the Royal Armory and listened to the band play.  From there we headed to Westminster Abbey but the line was even longer to get in and we didn't wait. Evidently Princess Kate left her wedding bouquet at the tomb of the unknown soldier and people want to see that, we didn't.

Instead we walked to the Thames river to see the House of Parliament and we're also treated to a model being photographed. We crossed over the river and then took the river walk to look at some new architecture, old buildings and the Tower Bridge.

The weather has been absolutely wonderful since we arrived here.  Sunny, no rain and perfect for walking. Some of the new architecture is very nice and unusual, like the "Gerkin" and the Majors building and it's contrasted by very old architecture like at St. Michaels church.

Tomorrow we have plans to go and see Leeds Castle and that will probably take up most of the day.

England-day 2

We started for Northleach about 10AM and got there at 11:30.  It's a small village where once lived the teacher of English for Zbyszek when he attended University.  His old teacher died last year so Z wanted to place a candle on his grave.  The cemetery was behind a beautiful, old church that originally dates back to the 13th century but this one was built over the old one in the 15th century.  I walked around it and then inside taking pictures while Z searched for the grave of his old teacher who died last year.  When I was done, Joan and I found Z and joined him.  In this cemetery are some beautiful trees, so big that two of them growing together had a passage way cut between them and they look like one tree.   When Z was done we went back to the car and drove to another little town called Bourton on the Water.

This is definitely a tourist town with a little river running through it and tourists everywhere. We had coffee, walked around for a little bit and then went on to our next town, Moretem in Marsh.

This town was also a tourist town but not as many tourists.  It has, also a great church in it, St. Lawrence, and so I had to take pictures of that.

Tomorrow we take the train to London with Jackie and Tony and do a little sight seeing there.

Gdy skończyłam, Joan i znalazłem Z i dołączył do niego. Gdy Z dokonano wróciliśmy do samochodu i pojechałem do innego miasteczku Bourton on the Water.

To na pewno miejscowość turystyczna z rzeczki poprzez uruchomienie go i turystów wszędzie.

Jutro mamy jechać pociągiem do Londynu, Jackie i Tony i zrobić trochę zwiedzania istnieje.

Day 1.

Day 1 of our trip started at 6AM on last Saturday. Z was on time and after packing the car we headed for the highway to Germany. The road wasn't too bad until we reached about 20 km before the border and then traiffic slowed.  It was also the last chance to buy gas in Poland where the gas is 1 zl per litre cheaper.  We made the stop, waited in line, filled up with gasoline and continued to the border.  There is an immediate difference once in Germany, the roads are great.  In fact, after driving, once we left Poland, I remembered I do like driving long distances but I've gotten use to bad roads and it's diminished my taste for driving. We passed by the tallest statue of Jesus on the way to the border so I took a picture of it.  One beautiful thing about travelling at this time of the year is that the rapeseed is in bloom and every country we drove through was covered with it.

From Germany we drove through Holland, then Belgium and finally France, to Calais where we spent the night to take the ferry the next day to Dover, England. Calais is one of the town that survives because of it's ferry businesses.  Then run 24 hours a day, about every half hour.  The cost is about 60 Euro for the car.  It takes an hour to make the crossing. Naturally the town is filled with tourists waiting for ferries so hotels and restaurants are busy.   What is surprising is that it is hard to find a menu in English and the resistance of French help to speak English.

Now I can say I've seen the white cliffs of Dover.  In England, Zbyszek took the driving duties and we made it to Jackie and Tony's house in about two and a half hours.   They live in a nice community, Red Hill, and after we arrived they took us for a walk up Red Hill to a nice view of the country.  It was nice walking after being in the car during the long trip.  Later Jackie served and nice dinner and we talked for a while about our plans for the week and the next day.

Z Niemiec jechaliśmy przez Holandii, Belgii i wtedy wreszcie Francji, Calais, gdzie spędziliśmy noc, aby skorzystać z promu następnego dnia do Dover w Anglii. Trwa godzinę do przejścia.

W Anglii, Zbyszek przejął obowiązki jazdy i dotarliśmy do domu Jackie i Tony'ego w dwie i pół godziny. Później służył Jackie i dobrą kolację i rozmawialiśmy chwilę o naszych planach w ciągu tygodnia i dnia następnego.

Golina visit.

Plans don't always go as you plan.  Joan wasn't feeling well this morning when we got up for our trip to Golina so she stayed home and last night cousin Cecylia Wiśniewska called to ask if she could go with us to see her sister Kazia.  So instead of taking Joan I took Cecylia.

We arrived there at 1PM and sat down to obiad prepared by Kazia.  It was a large amount of food, all prepared by Kazia, and everything was delicious.

After obiad cousin Andrzej and I took a walk to the cemetery, then to the park, past the old wooden church and then back home.

Anna, the sister of Kazia and Cecylia who also lives in Golina wasn't feeling well so Andrzej, Cecylia and I walked to her flat to say hello and talk for a little while.  After about 20 minutes Andrzej and I went home and left the two sisters to talk alone.

About 5:30, Kazia's daughter, Anna, arrived home from work and we said hello and talked a little with her before dinner was served.  As I requested it was a small dinner and upon finishing it it was time to start the drive back to Poznań.  At 8PM I arrived home and wrote this blog.

Slideshow on the right.

O 05:30, córka Kazia, pani Anna, przyjechał do domu z pracy, a my "Hello" i rozmawiał z nią trochę, zanim podano obiad. O 8 wieczorem wróciłem do domu i napisałem ten blog.

Beautiful day.

My little "girlfriend" has a new mode of transportation. It's kind of like a bike but for very young children.

Today was a beautiful day for the ride to Kandulski's but before we left Joan checked the mail. Two birthday cards were there, one from cousin Janek from Grudziąz and one from Jackie and Tony from England.  We'll be seeing them on Sunday.

The ride was a nice array of yellow dandelions and white flowers mixed together in long patches along the road.  I love the dandelions because they are so brightly colored.  Kind of like the rapeseed that will be coming alive at the end of May but the rapeseed covers huge fields and smells great.

We passed Poznań Plaza and arrived at Kandulski's at 3PM as usual.  We spent most of the time talking about our upcoming trip together and Zbyszek tried out the new GPS system he bought a few weeks ago.
Tomorrow it's off to Golina, I can't wait!!

Dwie karty urodziny były tam, jeden z kuzyna Janek z Grudziąz i jeden z Jackie i Tony z Anglii.

67?

I'm still full from Sunday and today I had seven different kind of cakes on my birthday.  I'm going into sugar overload. Still can't believe I'm 67.  How did this happen? Just last week my grandfather was holding my hand, I went to my brothers first communion, I started school, graduated high school, went to university, got married, had a son, moved to the forest and built a house, got married to Joan and then moved to Poland.  That all just happened and now I'm 67?  You have got to be kidding.

Wciąż jestem pełen od niedzieli i dzisiaj miał siedem różnych rodzajów ciastek na moje urodziny. Idę do przeciążenia cukru.
