4 Horsemen of Music.

So sad to hear the news that Wayne Shorter died yesterday morning. He was part of a group called Weather Report. In the area of jazz, that group and Return to Forever probably had the most influential jazz musicians of the 70s and 80s. Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, Jaco Pastorius, Chick Corea, and Al Di Meola were members of those two groups. Of those, only Di Meola still lives. I took Joan to see them twice at the Auditorium Theatre and they were fantastic to hear them perform live.

Jaco Pastorius pioneered a new standard of rapid-fire virtuosity on his instrument, the electric bass, and in the process was a prime mover in bridging jazz and the pop music of his day. He died in 1987 in Ft, Lauderdale, Fla. as a result of injuries sustained during a fight in a local nightclub. He was 35.

Josef Erich Zawinul was an Austrian jazz and jazz fusion keyboardist and composer. Jazz fusion was a musical genre that he created combining jazz and rock music. In 1970, Zawinul founded Weather Report with Wayne Shorter. Their first two years emphasized a relatively open, group improvisation format similar to what Miles Davis was doing in a more rock-oriented format. He died in 2007.

Armando Anthony "Chick" Corea was an American jazz composer, pianist, keyboardist, bandleader, and occasional percussionist. His compositions "Spain", "500 Miles High", "La Fiesta", "Armando's Rhumba", and "Windows" are widely considered jazz standards. As a member of Miles Davis's band in the late 1960s, he participated in the birth of jazz fusion. In the 1970s he formed Return to Forever. He died in 2021

Wayne Shorter was an American jazz saxophonist and composer. Shorter came to prominence in the late 1950s as a member of, and eventually primary composer for, Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. In the 1960s, he joined Miles Davis's Second Great Quintet and then co-founded the jazz fusion band Weather Report. He died on March 2, 2023.
