September 1 marks the national day of remembrance for the start of World War II, which began on September 1, 1939, with the invasion of Poland. Official memorial services, wreath-laying ceremonies, and the sounding of sirens are held at historical sites such as Westerplatte to honor the defenders and victims of the war.
First Day of the School Year
It is also the official start of the primary and secondary school year. Known as Rozpoczęcie Roku Szkolnego, students attend formal inaugural ceremonies at their schools to welcome the new academic term.
September 1 is a day of national observance and remembrance rather than an official statutory day off work.
