In the 's70, I was attending university to study classical guitar during the day in Chicago and teaching guitar in a private studio at night. I was married, had a young son, and we lived in the house of my grandfather who had died a few years before. It was a one-hour train ride to school, and then back.
The studio was called Melody Mart. It sold pianos and guitar but also had 10 private rooms for teaching, Every week, I averaged about 50 students to teach and I enjoyed most of them. i had a few favorite students. One of them was Pat Shields who already knew how to play basically but wanted to improve. We were of similar age, 25-26, and of similar thoughts about life so we got along well.
One day he brought in a vinyl record off someone I had never heard of, Tom Waits. He said he had one song on the album he wanted to learn how to play. "Looking For The Heart of Saturday Night". The first time I heard it, I became a fan of Tom Waits. His style of singing and unusual voice was unique.
Pat knew some people who rented an old farmhouse about an hour's drive south. He was the caretaker for the house although he didn't live there. One summer when they moved out, Joan nd I went to spend a weekend there. A very strange thing happened.
We had spent a nice day not doing much and when dinner was over, we went for a walk around the farm. By dark, we returned to go to bed. This farmhouse had 2 staircases, one for the residents and one for the servants at the back.
We chose to sleep in the front bedroom on the second floor with a big bay window. We got ready and climbed into bed. About 15 minutes later we hear a faint voice downstairs and I went down to see what was going on. There was no one there. Back upstairs and a few minutes later, the voice was heard again and some doors opened and closed. Back down I went to find no one.
Laying in bed for the third time, now we heard footsteps on the servant's staircase coming up, then a door open and close. We hear someone moving in one of the backrooms and I went to see who it was. No one was there again.
Back with Joan, we were starting to freak out. I called Pat and he told me that years ago, the husband had killed his wife in the servant's quarters. He said he also had heard stories of a ghost but didn't think much of it. I told him what we had just been hearing and he said maybe the stories were true and that's why the house could never sell.
Now, Joan and I were not believers in ghost stories but at the same time, we had just witnessed some strange going on in the house and were not about to spend the night experiencing anything else.
We packed our bags quickly and drove back to our own home.
