Something cheerful.

Something to be cheerful about. I came across this story about a small city/town in Spain who decided to reduce the number of cars in the center of town and make it more pedestrian-friendly.  However, they didn't want it to impact the local businesses so they also took that into consideration.  To this end, the Spanish city of Pontevedra, population 84,000, has done something remarkable: it has reduced car use in its historic core by 90 percent and citywide by half. And it has done it without blanket fees or bans, instead of using clever engineering and some gentle nudging to get people out of their cars and onto the street. I did something not so cheerful the other day. Now, Joan and I have a Fiat Panda car, our 2nd one. I have been putting windshield washer fluid into whenever it runs out for the last 10 years. Well, 2 days ago, for some very unknown reason, I put the fluid, by mistake, into the engine coolant container. A BIG mistake.  I didn't realize it before it was too late. So, I had to take the car to the garage, not only for an oil change but to have the engine drained of coolant and new fluid added, This doubled the price I had to pay and made me feel like an idiot for doing it. But, on the bright side, I'm helping the Polish economy. :-)

Coś, z czego można się cieszyć. Natknąłem się na historię o małym mieście w Hiszpanii, które postanowiło zmniejszyć liczbę samochodów w centrum miasta i uczynić je bardziej przyjaznym dla pieszych. Nie chciano jednak, aby wpłynęło to na lokalne firmy, więc wzięto to pod uwagę. W tym celu hiszpańskie miasto Pontevedra, liczące 84 000 mieszkańców, zrobiło coś niezwykłego: w swoim historycznym centrum zmniejszyło użycie samochodu o 90 procent, a w mieście o połowę. Pewnego dnia zrobiłem coś nie tak wesołego. Teraz Joan i ja mamy samochód Fiat Panda, nasz drugi. Ilekroć kończył się płyn do spryskiwaczy do przedniej szyby, dolewałem go w ciągu ostatnich 10 lat. Cóż, 2 dni temu, z jakiegoś bardzo nieznanego powodu, przez pomyłkę, wlałem płyn do zbiornika chłodzącego silnik. Duży błąd. Nie zdawałem sobie z tego sprawy, zanim było za późno. Musiałem więc zabrać samochód do garażu, nie tylko aby wymienić olej, ale także po to, by spuścić z silnika płyn do chłodzenia i dodać nowy. To podwoiło cenę, którą musiałem zapłacić i sprawiło, że poczułem się jak idiota. Z drugiej strony, pomagam polskiej gospodarce.
