Joan and I want to wish a Happy Birthday to cousin Ron Kazmierczak, his 65th.

A return to class today to find out that our student/teacher now has a student/teacher and she taught the class today. She couldn't be more than 20 years old but she do a fairly good job I think. We only have about two months left on this course and then we'll be on our own again to learn. I think we've made progress with written text, grammar and vocabulary but speaking is still the problem.

Joan's been hooked on the EuroSport channel the last few days. Her new love is Snooker, the pool game. She's been watching the four day European Championships in the evening after we finish studying and she really enjoys it. Her son would be proud of her because he is a pool fanatic.

Our meeting is all set for this Thursday in Grodziec at 3PM. The real estate agency called the owner to say I wanted to return with my wife and they will be waiting for us. Hope it's not a rainy day so it won't be difficult for Joan to walk from the car to the house. I've been thinking about carrying her upstairs so she can see it. She can't manage stairs at all on her crutches plus the stairs are a little steep. The agent said the price of the house is negotiable and that's great because we'll need a little negotiation to afford it.

Grandparents & language

A nice day today, good weather so I went for a little walk and then to the park by the church where I sat and watched people go by. I don't know if I was just not aware in America but here, in Poland, you see so many grandparents walking with grandchildren or pushing strollers with babies in them. Also you see so many more people wlaking around here then in America, especially in the evenings after dinner.

I have still so much learn of the Polish language. Today I read the contract I signed with the real estate agency when I went to see the house in Grodzieć. The way I read it meant we had to pay 2% for the real estate agency and 22% of the total cost in a tax. That meant the house was out of our reach and we were unhappy. Then I took the contract to a Polish friend who read it for me and it turned out I was wrong so the house is still affordable. This Thursday I will return to Grodzieć with Joan and our friend Zybyszek so Joan can see the house for herself. I am sure she will have questions to ask that I cannot think of and Zybyszek speaks English as well as we do so he will be able to translate and say everything. I would still like to visit it again with Wieslaw Kazus, husband of cousin Ola and builder of houses, so he can tell me the condition of this house but I liked this house and the property. It is only 40 kilometers from Konin and maybe an hour and 10 minutes from Poznan. I can see myself living there.


Miły dzień dzisiaj, dobra pogoda tak poszedłem po trochę spaceru i wtedy do parku przez kościół gdzie usiadłem i obserwowałem ludzie mijają. Nie wiem czy byłem właśnie nie świadomy w Ameryce ale tutaj, w Polsce, widzisz tak dużo dziadków chodzących z wnukami albo pchającymi spacerowiczami z dziećmi w nich. Też widzisz tak dużo więcej ludzi wlaking dookoła tutaj wtedy w Ameryce, specjalnie wieczorami po obiedzie.

Mam jeszcze tylu uczą się polskiego języka. Dzisiaj czytam kontrakt, który podpisałem z agencją nieruchomości kiedy poszedłem zobaczyć dom w Grodzieć. Sposób, którą czytam to miałam na myśli, że musieliśmy zapłacić 2% dla agencji nieruchomości i 22% z kosztu łącznego w podatku. Które oznaczyło, że dom był poza naszym zasięgiem i byliśmy nieszczęśliwi. Wtedy wziąłem kontrakt do polskiego przyjaciela, który czyta to dla mnie i to wyeksmitowało, że nie miałem racji tak dom jest jeszcze taki na którego stać. Ten czwartek wrócę do Grodzieć z Joan i naszym przyjacielem Zybyszekiem tak Joan może zobaczyć dom dla siebie. Jestem pewny, że ona będzie mieć pytania by poprosić, że nie mogę pomyśleć z i Zybyszek mówi po angielsku, jak również robimy tak on będzie mógł przetłumaczyć i powiedzieć wszystko. We went to Golina today, to visit cousin Kazia and her son, Andrzej. Also to take Andrzej with me to the real estate agency where I would get the address of the house for sale in Grodzieć. To tell you the truth, I was expecting to find a house in need of extensive immediate repairs for the amount of money asked for this place. It's a standard two floor block house, with small kitchen connecting to a breakfast room on side of the first floor and living room or dining room on the other. It also has a laundry room, pantry, bathroom and room for the central stove that is heated with coal. The stove is old and should be replaced. The house was built in 1985. The floors are all wood. It has a rather steep staircase leading upstairs where there are two bedrooms. living room, den and another bathroom. Behind this house is another house being used for storage and an attached garage. That house would need a lot of work to make it habitable. The property itself is rather large, 1 1/4 acres. It sits at the end of the village on a road leading into the village. In the front of the house it's landscaped very nicely with trees, bushes and flowers. It has a beautiful blue spruce tree behind the entrance gate. The trees are old enough that it blocks most of the view of the house. I liked the house but Joan, because of her ankle, did not see it yet except for the pictures I took so no decision was made to buy or not to buy.

To ma raczej strome schody wiodące na górę gdzie tam są dwa pokój mieszkalny. sypialń , nora i inna łazienka. Za tym domem jest inny dom będący używany dla magazynowania i przymocowanego garażu. Tamten dom potrzebowałby dużo pracy by zrobić to mieszkalnym. Własność sam jest raczej wielki, 1 1/4 akry. To siedzi przy końcu wsi na drodze wiodącej do wsi. W przodzie domu to jest ukształtowane architektonicznie bardzo przyjemnie z drzewami, krzakami i kwiatami. To ma piękne drzewo drzewa Picea pungens za bramą wejściową. Drzewa są dość stare, że to blokuje najwięcej z widoku domu. Polubiłem dom ale Joan, z powodu jej kostki, nie zobaczyłem tego jeszcze poza obrazami wziąłem tak żadna decyzja nie była zrobiona by kupić albo nie by kupić.

Sandy

Sometimes it's difficult to understand why events happen they way they do in life. The first 8 years of my life were spent in a strong Polish community in North Hammond, Indiana where seeing and playing with different cousins was an everyday occurrence.

After my grandparents died aunts and uncles starting moving a little further apart because of work or other reasons. My uncle Adam Kazmierczak bought a house in Clark Station, Indiana, about an hours drive away. It was a actually a split level house with two floors and each floor was a house in itself. My mother moved there with him and his family, his wife aunt Steffie and their two daughters, Sandy and Christine and son Duane. Duane and I played together all the time. We only lived there for a year or two and then moved back to Hammond. As years piled on Duane and I lost track of each other and it wasn't until 2001 that I was able to find him and talk again with him.

He was living in the state of Virginia and married. I decided to drive the 1000 miles to meet with him again after so many years absent from each others lives. I met his wife who, coincidentally, had the same name as his sister, Sandy. She had a beautiful personality, so full of life and in a few hours I had an immense liking for her. We only spent 3 days together but in that time formed a bond of friendship that lasted. From that year on we would call each other on any given day just to see how the other person was doing and what was going on in our lives. When I told her about our move to Poland she was thrilled for us and supported our idea 100%. She was an amazing person.

Last month she passed away, much to early in life, and tomorrow is the day of her memorial service. I wish I could be there physically but mentally I will. As long as I live..she will too.

Spotkałem jego żonę, która, przypadkowo, miała to samo imię jak jego siostra, Sandy. Ona miała piękną osobowość, tak pełen życia i w kilku godzinach miałem ogromne upodobanie dla niej. Tylko spędziliśmy 3 dni razem ale w tamtym czasie tworzyliśmy obligację przyjaźni tamto trwani. Od tamtego roku na my nazwałby się nawzajem w jakimkolwiek danym dniu właśnie by zobaczyć jak inna osoba robiła i co szło na w naszym życia. Kiedy powiedziałem jej o naszym ruchu do Polski ona była przejęta dla nas i poparła naszą ideę 100%. Ona była zdumiewającą osobą.

Ubiegły miesiąc ona umarła, dużo do wcześnie w życiu, i jutro jest dzień jej pamiątkowej usługi. Pragnę, żebym mógł być tam fizycznie ale umysłowo będę. Tak długo jak ja live..she będzie również.

Piątek

Yes, wash day today. I've become really good at doing the laundry but we have only one drying rack so I can only do one load at a time and it's an apartment size wash machine so it's a small load. That's about half the size of a normal American machine. The fabric softeners here don't do near the job the American ones do. Nothing comes out really soft no matter how much softener I put it. It's not enough of a reason to return to America :-)

The weather has been back to cool the last few days so I haven't been out for a walk . Tomorrow Joan and I will go to Golina, to cousin Kazia's house, and then her son Andrzej and I will go to look at the house for sale in Gródzieć.

Our normal Friday afternoon Polish class was cancelled so no school today. The teacher will make it up with extended classes next Tuesday and Friday.

Joan is so bored that she has been watching the European's women's weightlifting championships on TV. Now that's really being bored.


Tak, umyj dzień dzisiaj. Stałem się naprawdę dobrym w robieniem pralni ale mamy tylko jedną wysychającą półkę tak mogę tylko zrobić jeden ładunek jednocześnie i to jest wielkość apartamentu mycie maszyna tak to jest mały ładunek. To jest o pół rozmiarze normalnej amerykańskiej maszyny. Środki zmiękczające struktury tutaj nie robią blisko pracy Amerykanin, którego jedne robią. Nic nie wychodzi naprawdę miękkiego żadna sprawa ile środek zmiękczający kładę to. To nie jest dość powodu by wrócić do Ameryki :-)

Pogoda miała w tył ochłodzić ostatnie mało dni tak nie poszukałem spaceru . Joan jutro i ja pójdę do Golina, do kuzyna dom Kazia , i wtedy jej syna Andrzej i ja pójdę popatrzeć na dom na sprzedaż w Gródzieć.

Nasze normalne piątku popołudnie polska klasa była nie odwołana tak żadna szkoła dzisiaj. Nauczyciel będzie pogodzić się z kimś z rozszerzonym klasyfikuje następny wtorek i piątek.

Joan jest tak nudzona, że ona obserwowała Europejczyka kobiet mistrzostwa podnoszenia ciężarów na telewizji. Teraz gdy naprawdę bycie nudzone.

Nic nowego!

Nothing new. Some pictures of Poznań at night. I had an email from the real estate company that is handling the sale of a house in Gródieć. I wanted to set up an appointment to see the house so I wrote to them. They replied that they had no agent available to show me the house but I could come to their office and they would give me directions and the address of the house. It is currently occupied so the owner would show me the house and surrounding grounds. I find it really strange that the agency is selling a house yet has no one to show the house to clients. That kind of thing would never happen in the U.S. I'm hoping that cousin Andrzej will not be working on Saturday afternoon and can accompany me for the visit.

I thought about this house today, not really about the house but the possibility of living in the town/village that my maternal grandmother was born in. We've visited this place before, on previous trips to Poland, so I know it is a small place, smaller than Golina. I remember well the manor house where my great grandfather worked as a smith and when we were there we even visited the town office to see if we could get inside to look at it but it wasn't possible. That was four years ago and I don't know what happened to the manor house. At the time we were there is was closed, previously it was turned into a school but closed and unoccupied when we were there. It was on a large piece of property in the center of the town and had another building in front of it that was occupied by one family on one floor. The church of my grandmother was closed at the hour we were there and we were able to get the caretaker to let us in so I could see it. I walked through the cemetery looking for family names on tombstones but could not find one that I recognized. I went back a second time with cousin Andrzej but still could find no connection.

Joan is well, waiting patiently for the time when she can walk without the crutches. We had hoped to take a trip to Gdansk on the 26th of April but don't think that will happen.


Nic nowego. Kilka obrazów wieczorem Poznań. Miałem email od spółki nieruchomości, która posługuje się sprzedażą domu w Gródieć. Chciałem umieścić umówiony termin by zobaczyć dom tak napisałem do nich. Oni odpowiedzieli, że oni nie mieli żadnego agenta dostępnego by pokazać mi dom ale mógłbym przyjść do ich biura i oni daliby mi instrukcje i adres domu. Pomyślałem o tym domu dzisiaj, nie naprawdę o domu ale możliwość o mieszkaniu w mieście/wsi, którą moja matczyna babka urodziła się w. Odwiedziliśmy to miejsce przedtem, na poprzednich podróżach do Polski, więc będę wiedzieć, że to jest małe miejsce, mniejsze niż Golina. Pamiętam dobrze dworek gdzie mój wielki dziadek pracował jak kowal i kiedy byliśmy tam nawet odwiedziliśmy miejskie biuro by zobaczyć jeżeli moglibyśmy dostać się wewnątrz by popatrzeć na to ale to nie było możliwe. To było cztery lata temu i nie znam co zdarzone się dworkowi. Wtedy byliśmy tam są byli zamknięty, poprzednio to było obrócone do szkoły ale zamknęło i nie zajęty kiedy byliśmy tam. To było na dużym kawałku własności w środku miasta i miało inne budynek przed tym, które było zajęte przez jedną rodzinę na jednej podłodze. Kościół mojej babki był zamknięty przy godzinie byliśmy tam i mogliśmy dostać, żeby dozorca pozwolił nam w tak mnie mógłby zobaczyć to. Chodziłem przez cmentarz szukający nazwisk na nagrobkach ale nie mógłbym znaleźć jednego, że rozpoznałem. Wróciłem drugi czas z kuzyna Andrzej ale jeszcze mógłbym nie znaleźć żadnego połączenia.

Joan czuje się dobrze, czekająca cierpliwie na czas kiedy ona może chodzić bez kul. Spodziewaliśmy się wybrać się w podróż do Gdańska 26. kwietnia ale nie myślimy, który zdarzy się.

Outrageous!

Today I had to go to Pikary street, to the store that sells medical braces for people with fractured ankles. I figured it would cost 50-75 zl for these two pieces of plastic with Velcro. Wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When the girl told me the price I was totally surprised....200zl. 200 zl for two plastic pieces. I asked why it was so much and she told me because we have private insurance and not national. If we had national coverage the cost would be 60zl. That's quite a difference. I thought I would wait until our national coverage begins on May 1st but she told me I would have to make an appointment with a national doctor and he would have to write a prescription for the brace. She said I could wait from one to three months for the appointment. By that time Joan's leg should be healed and she needs the brace now so I paid the money, took the brace and walked back to the bus stop to catch #63 back home. 200 zl....what a ripoff.

Dzisiaj musiałem pójść do Pikary ulicy, do sklepu, który sprzedaje medyczne klamry dla ludzi z łamanymi kostkami. Wyobraziłem, że to kosztowałoby 50-75 zl dla tych dwu kawałków plastiku z Velcro. Źle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Kiedy dziewczyna powiedziała mi cenę byłem całkowicie surprized....200zl. 200 zl dla dwu plastycznych kawałków. Poprosiłem dlaczego to był tyle i ona powiedziała mi ponieważ mamy prywatne ubezpieczenie i nie narodowy. Gdybyśmy mieliśmy narodowe omówienie koszt byłby 60zl. To jest całkiem różnica. Pomyślałem, że czekałbym aż nasze narodowe omówienie zaczyna się w maju 1. ale ona powiedziała mi musiałbym zrobić umówiony termin z narodowym doktorem i on musiałby napisać recepta na klamra. Ona powiedziała, że mógłbym czekać od jednego do trzech miesięcy na umówiony termin. Cast-less........but

still not walking. The doctor said she was still healing after he saw the x-ray taken today. He put a gauze bandage on her ankle and said to stay off her foot for another two weeks. He also said to buy a velcro-stablizer brace for her ankle and to always wear it. After two weeks she should start walking on her leg, with the brace and crutches. In four weeks we are to return to have another look at the ankle so Joan is still immobile.

We left the office and arrived home just as a tremendous rain storm hit the area and we were unable to get out of the car. After 20 minutes we decided to try and make it to the underground parking area for our building. With Joan hobbling down the sidewalk the sky opened up and poured rain upon us. By the time we got to the parking we were soaked and had to change out of the wet clothes when we got home.

Po dwu tygodniach ona powinna zacząć chodzenie na jej nodze, z klamrą i kulami. W czterech tygodniach mamy wrócić mieć inne spojrzenie na kostkę tak Joan jest jeszcze nieruchoma.

Zostawiliśmy biuro i przybyliśmy do domu właśnie jak straszliwa ulewa uderzyliśmy obszar i byliśmy niezdolni by wydostać się z samochodu. Po 20 minutach zdecydowaliśmy się spróbować i zrobić to do podziemnego miejsca parkowania dla naszego budowy. Z Joan utykającą na dół chodnikowi niebo otworzone i zlał deszcz na nas. Przez czas dostaliśmy się do parkingu byliśmy zmoczeni i musieliśmy zmienić się z mokrego ubrania kiedy dostaliśmy się do domu.

Forsythias

Another great day for a walk so I went south to Grundwaldska street to the park. The forsythia bushes are in full bloom, yellow everywhere. I sat in the park for a while and took a walk south on Przebyszewskiego street. I ended up by the Arena and then returned home.

Earlier in the day I went to the post office at 8:00AM and mailed in our tax forms to the U.S. The deadline is tomorrow so I was just in time. I had a little difficulty getting the clerk to understand I needed a signed receipt but eventually she understood.

Tomorrow is the big day for Joan...her cast comes off. She's thinking she'll be able to walk again tomorrow after the cast is off but I think it's still going to take a couple of more weeks until she gets use to using her foot.

Inny swietnie dzień dla spaceru tak poszedłem na południe do Grundwaldska ulicy do parku. Krzaki forsycji są w pełnym kwiecie, żółtym wszędzie. Usiadłem w parku na chwilę i pospacerowałem na południe na Przebyszewskiego ulicy. Zakończyłem przez Arenę i wtedy wróciłem do domu.

Wcześniej w dniu poszedłem do urzędu pocztowego o 8:00AM i wysłany w naszych podatków formach do Stanów Zjednoczonych nieprzekraczalna granica jest jutro tak byłem w samą porę. Miałem trochę trudności dostającą, żeby urzędnik zrozumiał ja potrzebny podpisana recepta ale ostatecznie ona zrozumiała.

Jutro jest duży dzień dla Joan...her rzuconego odpada. Ona myśli, że ona będzie mogła chodzić znowu jutro gdy rzut jest precz ale myślę, że to ma jeszcze wziąć parę więcej tygodni aż ona będzie dostawać użycie do używania jej stopy.

A beautiful day today and I just couldn't stay inside all day. I made lunch for Joan, made sure she was OK and then went to Rogalin, to see the outside of the palace. The inside is being renovated and you can't go in this year but the grounds can be walked on and you can view the outside of this magnificient palace.

This monumental residence was begun in 1768 and by 1774 it was habitable, two years before the Declatation of Independence for America.
In 1776 the stables were built and a year later a chapel in the south wing. It's a baroque style residence built by Kazimierz Raczyński. The palace consists of the main builiding with a gallery wing on each side. The architect is unknown but thought to be a Saxon architect. There is an excellent site that tells about this palace with more pictures but in Polish.

Rogalin is a village in Poland, near Poznań, situated on the Warta river. Rogalin is primarily famous for its 18th century baroque palace of the Raczyński family, now the Raczyński Art Gallery, housing a permanent exhibition of Polish and international paintings (including Paul Delaroche and Claude Monet) which was started by Edward Aleksander Raczyński. Rogalin is also known for its 1000 year old oak trees (Polish: Dęby Rogalińskie) on the banks of the Warta.

I drove directly into the parking area and was greeted by a parking lot attendent. The fee was 4 zl to park. I walked a short distance over a bridge to the entrance of the grounds. Even without being able to go inside of the palace the trip was worth it. It is magnificent!! The surrounding grounds or park are very interesting to walk. An impressive site for me was the oak trees that were cordoned off with a wood fence. Some of these trees are 1000 years. 1000 years old! In the back of the palace are the gardens and the park, with great views of the countryside, statues everywhere and at this time of the year, only a few people. I imagine in summer this place will be packed with tourists.

When I look at the palace it is impossible to imagine this being a residence of a family. It is so incredibly large, with so many rooms. I can't believe the owner ever used more that 10 rooms and this palace must have over 100. I think if I owned it today I could easily invite every relative I have in Poland to live there and still have some rooms left and I have a lot of relatives here.:-)


Piękny dzień dzisiaj i właśnie nie mógłbym pozostać wewnątrz całego dnia. Zjadłem posiłek południowy dla Joan, upewniłem się ona była w porządku i wtedy poszła do Rogalin, by zobaczyć na zewnątrz pałacu. Wewnątrz jest odnowiony i nie możesz wejść tego roku ale grunty mogą być chodzone dalej i możesz obejrzeć na zewnątrz tego magnificient pałacu.
To monumentalne miejsce zamieszkania było zaczęte w 1768 i przez 1774 to było mieszkalne, dwa lata przed Declatation Niezależności dla Ameryki.
W 1776 stajnie były zbudowane i rok później kaplica na południu skrzydło. To jest miejsce zamieszkania stylu barokowego zbudowane Kazimierz Raczyński. Popędziłem bezpośrednio do miejsca parkowania i byłem witany przez parkingu attendent. Opłata była 4 zl by zaparkować. Chodziłem mała odległość ponad mostem do wejścia gruntów. Kiedy patrzę na pałac to jest niemożliwe wyobrazić sobie to bycie miejsce zamieszkania rodziny. To jest tak niewiarygodnie wielkie, z tak wieloma pokojami. Nie mogę uwierzyć właściciel kiedykolwiek używał więcej, że 10 pokoi i ten pałac musi mieć ponad 100. Myślę jeżeli posiadłem to dzisiaj mógłbym łatwo zaprosić każdego krewnego mam w Polsce by żyć tam i jeszcze każę kilku pokojom opuszczać i mam dużo krewnych tutaj.:-)

Sobota & Internet

Today up at 9AM, made breakfast and prepared to go help someone with their English. When I was done I visited Zybyszek and Ninka so they could answer some questions about the Zus application of health insurance. After they were done helping me Ninka gave me some of the crumb cake she had just made to take home.

I received an email from the wife of a cousin. She has a sister living in Sandomierz while she lives in South Bend, Indiana. It is interesting what a small world it is. I have so many cousins spread all over the world and many who I will never meet but we communicate through this medium, the internet. It's hard to imagine life without it now. There may be many problems with the internet but there is no denying how so many have come to rely on it for almost everything dealing with information. It was my daily Instant Messenger conversations with my cousin Luka in Poland while I was in the U.S. that taught me so much of my family history in Poland. Since then I have been contacted by various "new" cousins from all over the world who are interested in our family history. Without the Internet it would have taken years to gather all the information I have now about my family history. On those rare ocassions when my computer crashes I feel a panic because I lose contact for a day or two with everyone. When I think of how my quest for family information began, with a normal mailed letter and then the waiting for weeks until I received the answer, I am so greatful for this Internet. The Instant Messenger is a blessing because it allows instant communication through typing. I don't have to wait for an email reply.

Today I met Ninka at the health insurance office and we filled out the applications and then returned home.

Found an interesting house for sale in Grodzieć. It's interesting to me because this is the town that my grandmother Rosaljia was born. It's about a half hour south of Golina and we have visited it in previous visits to Poland. My great grandfather Józef worked as a smith in the manor house that is still standing in Grodzieć. I am going to call the real estate agent tomorrow to see if we can take a look at this house. The price, 170,000 zl, seems low so maybe it is in bad shape. I won't know until we see it. It wouldn't be bad to live there, it's only a short drive to Golina and Konin, maybe 1 1.4 hours to Poznań.


Dzisiaj spotkałem Ninka przy biurze ubezpieczenia zdrowotnego i wypełniliśmy aplikacje i wtedy wróciliśmy do domu.

Znaleziony interesujący dom na sprzedaż w Grodzieć. To interesuje do mnie ponieważ to jest miasto, które mój babki Rosaljia urodził się. 2 stops

I had two places had to go to today, national health care office and a bookstore by Rialto theater.

The first stop produced no results. ZUS is a large building with 6 floors and more offices than you can count. It was like going to the license where you take a number and wait except I couldn't figure out who I was suppose to be waiting for. I couldn't find anyone who spoke English so after wondering around looking at all the signs I decided to leave and try again tomorrow.

The second stop also produced no results as they did not have the books I needed. I decided to walk to the campus bookstore, some two miles away and see if they had them. They didn't but the clerk gave me directions in English where to go to buy them. I followed her directions and wound up in the wrong part of town. I stopped a policeman to ask him where Kosciuski street was and he said in the opposite direction from where I came. As it turned out the campus clerk had left turn amd right turn mixed up so I retraced my steps, found the Foreign language bookstore and was able to buy one of the books I needed.

I returned home, talked with my friend Zybyszek and he said his wife, Ninka, would meet me tomorrow morning at the national office and help me fill out the necessary papers to complete this task. Amazing people, Zybyszek and Ninka.



Miałem dwa miejsca musiały pójść do dzisiaj, narodowe urząd opieki medycznej i księgarnia przez teatr Rialto.

Pierwsze zatrzymanie nie wyprodukowało żadnych wyników. ZUS jest wielkie budynek z 6 podłóg i więcej urzędów niż możesz liczyć się. Drugie zatrzymanie też nie wyprodukowało żadnych wyników jak oni nie mieli książek ja potrzebny. Zdecydowałem się chodzić do księgarni miasteczka uniwersyteckiego , kilka dwa mile stąd i zobaczyć jeżeli oni mieli ich. Oni nie zrobili ale urzędnik dał mi instrukcje po angielsku gdzie pójść kupić ich. Poszedłem za jej instrukcjami {kierunkami} i kończę się w złej części miasta. Zatrzymałem policjanta by pytać go gdzie Kosciuski ulica była i on powiedział w przeciwległym kierunku skąd przyszedłem. Jak to wyeksmitowało, że urzędnik miasteczka uniwersyteckiego zostawił amd skręt w prawo obrotu mieszany tak odtworzyłem przeszłość moich kroków, znalazłem księgarnię Języka obcego i mogłem kupić jedną z książek ja potrzebny.

Wróciłem do domu, powiedziany z moim przyjacielem Zybyszekiem i on powiedział jego żonę, Ninka, spotkałby mnie jutro rano przy narodowym urzędzie i pomógłby mi wypełnić konieczne papiery by uzupełnić to zadanie. Zdumiewający ludzie, Zybyszek i Ninka.

3 more days, 3 more shots and then Joan is done sticking needles into her stomach. She took over the duty a week ago. Her poor stomach is black and blue from the shots. She's doing well and anxious to get the cast off.

I went to Narodowy Fundusz Zdrowia(National health Fund) office today and signed the contract. The girl was very helpful and I had no problem signing up. Tomorrow I have to go to ZUS(Health Insurance Company) and fill out two applications for Joan and I, pay the bill and then May 1st we will have it. Next week I'll have to call our Medicover office and stop our private insurance as of May 1st.

On the walk back from the office I made a side trip to one of the inside courtyards off S.W. Marcin street to look at the shops and then sat in the park for a while and did some people watching. The rest of the day I spent cleaning the flat and making dinner.

Na spacerze w tył od biura zrobiłem boczną podróż do jednego z wewnątrz dziedzińców precz S.W. Marcin ulica by popatrzeć na sklepy i wtedy usiadła w parku na chwilę i zrobiła kilku ludzi oczekujących. Reszta dnia spędziłem czyszczenie płaskiego i robiącego obiadu.

Cast

Tomorrow I go to Piekary street where the national health building is and sign a contract with them to become members. Joan and I have talked about it all week and decided it is something we should do for our future life in Poland. With it we will have full hospitilization if needed when we get old. Something I find very strange is that foreigners living in Poland have a lower per year cost than Polish citizens.

Joan's recovering well, I think. The cast is loose fitting now and she has no more pain in her leg. She can put pressure on it but is still not walking on it yet. It's due partly to the fact that the cast doesn't allow her to put her foot flat on the floor. She has an appointment next Tuesday to have the cast removed and then she will be able to start walking again. Hooray!!!!!


Jutro idę do Piekary ulicy gdzie narodowe zdrowie budowa jest i podpisują kontrakt z nimi by stać się członkami. Joan i ja powiedziałem o tym cały tydzień i zdecydowałem, że to jest coś, co powinniśmy zrobić dla naszego życia przyszłego w Polsce. Zdrowienie Joan dobrze, myślę. Rzut jest luźne przystosowywanie teraz i ona nie ma więcej bólu w jej nodze. Ona może wywrzeć nacisk na tym ale jeszcze nie chodzi na tym jeszcze. To jest należne częściowo do faktu, że rzut nie pozwoli, żeby ona położyła jej stopę płaską na podłodze. Stary Browar

That's the name of one of the biggest shopping malls in Poznań. It four floors, huge and long in length. It has underground parking and I use it when I need to go to Medicover like I did today. On rainy days like today, I can park, walk the length of the mall, exit, cross a street and I'm at Plac Andersia where Medicover is. Like any huge mall in the U.S. this one has everything, clothing stores, music stores, supermarket, restaurants, bakery, health food store, etc. It attracts a lot of people year round and leads to a long, car-free street that leads north to Stary Rynek. Naturally in the summer the place is packed with people from morning to night and is a hang out place for teenagers. I had to refill prescriptions and again it amazes me the cost difference. A 3 month supply of 3 prescriptions for 22.50 zl($12)

Church

I don't know what it is about the new churches that makes me hesitant to go there, but inside I don't feel the same as in an old one. The mass is the same, the same things are said but they are so plain, with little history, without statues. I would rather sit in an old church, even when it's cold, without heat. Maybe it's because in my formative years we lived next to such an old cathedral in the U.S. and it was like an extension of my grandparents house. We spent many hours there and the priest and nuns were our neighbors. I remember, in particular, one nun who I called Sister Vanilla because I couldn't pronounce her name and she would come over often to visit with my grandparents.

My own aunt, Sister Redempta, was in the Order of St. Joseph but she only visited every 3 or 5 years. Each time she would visit us she would come with cousin Sister Illuminata and it was always a happy occasion. In those days they wore the full "habit" and I was amazed at how coarse the material felt. Later in years her clothing changed to the more modern time and it always seemed strange not to see her in her old clothing. She died in 1976 and cousin, Sister Illuminata, in 1977. It was from an old address that she had in her address book that my search for relatives in Poland began. I wonder now what the two of them would say to me, now that I have returned to the land of our ancestors.

Maybe the old churches remind me of them, my grandparents, my mother, aunts, uncles and the times we spent in church together. In my first trip to Poland, to Golina where my grandfather came from I sat in the same pew as my grandfather and great grandmother and I felt I belolnged there. It's a wooden church and is still used for mass once each Sunday. There is a new church in Golina but it doesn't have the same feeling for me.. I prefer the old church.

In front of our flat

I went for walk around Stary Rynek to take some pictures of the flowering trees and planted flowers. It's a little chilly today but still nice enough to walk. Of of Wożna street I found this little cafe that is in an inside courtyard and off the beaten tourist walking aread. I was impressed by the brick work of the buildings surrounding the courtyard. Some of the restaurants are already setting up their outside cafes and it won't be long before they are full of people again.


Poszedłem po spacer dookoła Stary Rynek by zrobić kilka obrazów zakwitających drzew i sadziłem kwiaty. To jest trochę chłodnego dzisiaj ale jeszcze dość miłe by chodzić. Z Wożna ulicy znalazłem tę małą kawiarnię, która jest w wewnątrz dziedzińca i precz bity turysta chodzący mówią. Byłem zachwycony przez pracę cegły budynków otaczających dziedziniec. Kilka z restauracji już umieszczają ich zewnętrzne kawiarnie i to nie będzie długie zanim oni będą pełni ludzi znowu.

I have had more than one reader ask me if there is a program than translates English to Polish or Polish to English. The answer is yes. After our second trip to Poland in 2004, my cousin Andrzej sent it to me so it would be easier to communicate with my cousins in Poland. I have used it since that time and still use it to put the translation of our daily blog. It is NOT 100% accurate but seems to work enough. Now there is an updated version, version 4. I am still using the version 2. The program is called Tłumacz i Słownik Języka Niemieckiego 4. It can be found at....http://www.kompas.info.pl/index.html.
Here, in Poznań, you can buy it for about 80 zl($35). I have been told it is on the internet for anywhere between 150 to 300zl. Like I said, it is NOT 100% accurate but it does translate both ways..Polish/English or English/Polish and has a built in dictionary. If anyone knows of a better program, please let me know as I am still learning the language.

Christmas & Internet

There are days when little miracles happen before us and I just have to share them.

Yesterday Joan received a Christmas package from her daughter Karen. It was all of our mail from our U.S. address plus a collection of Mash and Seinfeld DVD's. Now, you have to understand that Joan is a MASH fanatic. She has been watching the same videos we taped while in the U.S. over and over again since we arrive. she's probably seen the same ones 40 or more times. When these new DVD's arrived she was thrilled at the prospect of seeing new Mash episodes. But the problem was that our DVD player, purchased in Poland, would only play DVD's recorded in Poland with a designation of region 2 and the DVD's from America came from region 1 so they wouldn't play. She was more than disappointed.

I talked with my friend Al, from America, and he told me of a site that I might be able to find a solution to the problem and I did. Videohelp.com was able to give me enough information that I was able to change our DVD player from a player that only played region 2 to a video player that plays all videos from any region. I can't tell you how happy that makes Joan. Now she can watch her Mash and Seinfeld without problems. The pictures are super clear, the sound is great and it doesn't jump up and down like some of the old tapes do. What a great day!!

I am happy to tell you our federal taxes are done for the U.S. Only with the help of Anna, a reader of our blog, was I able to complete the task today and it is a BIG load of my mind. We are still waiting for one form, 1099-R to arrive from the IRS but the figures are all done, plus we were able to claim our school fee as a deduction. I'm soooooooooooo relieved!!

I went food shopping at Real today to get the weekly supplies. I wanted to make two new dinners this week, one was roast pork with prunes dish and the other cousin Kazia's kaszanka. I needed a 4 pound pork roast for the first and pork neck for the second. Unfortunatley, Real had neither so I went to Paweł & Piotr, another supermarket. They didn't have either one of the items I needed. Guess I'll have to find a bigger meat market somewhere where I can buy these two items.

I started spring cleaning today with washing the big window in the kitchen, taking everything off the shelves and dusting them and washing the floor. It's amazing how much dust collects in one week.

A new tourist route is being established in Poznań. It will connect 12 wooden churches located in the environs of Poznań.
Thanks to the route, it will be possible to visit all of them in just one day. We owe the idea to the "Puszcza Zielonka" Inter-communal Association, which encompasses: Czerwonak, Kiszkowo, Murowana Goślina, Pobiedziska, Skoki and Swarzędz. The communes have allocated PLN 300 thousand for the route, another 300 thousand was subsidised by the EU. The monuments which are part of the route are several hundred years old and feature valuable art masterpieces. As the churches used to be closed for safety reasons, tourists were not able to admire their rich interiors. This will change after the route has been opened. The churches will always be open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. At the beginning of April, the route will be marked out along the roads and information boards presenting the history of the monuments will be put up next to the churches, which will be systematically renovated. I'm looking forward to walking this route with Joan.

Oczekuję chodzenia tego szlaku z Joan.
