Citadela

Saturday in Citadela Park for a walk. We don't go there often enough because Solacki park is so close and very nice but small compared to Citadela.

Citadela sits on a hill just north of the city center where the Winiary fortress stood until 1945. The Winiary fortress was built between 1828 and 1839 on the grounds of two depopulated villages, Bonin and Winiary. It was a classical structure forming part of the so - called new - Prussian system. In 1945 Citadela's fortifications were largely destroyed and in the following years most of what had been left was demolished. In those years a cemetery of Soviet soldiers was created on the southern slope of the hill. In 1962 work was started aiming to create in Citadela a Park. Today the park, together with the cemetery, has an area of around 100 hectares There are two museums and several cemeteries on the southern slope of the hill. There, soldiers of the Polish, French, English, American and Russian soldiers are buried.

One of the most noticeable features of Citadel Park is the Soviet Obelisk located prominently at the top of the grand staircase as you enter the park from Aleja Armii Poznań. The giant Socialist Realism column is dedicated to the Russian soldiers killed during the 1945 siege of the fort, and it's most interesting aspect is perhaps the one you can no longer see: the large red star affixed to the top which disappeared in the dead of night after the fall of communism in Poland in 1989.

W sobotę poszliśmy do parku Cytadela na spacer. Nie chodzimy tam często, ponieważ Park Sołacki jest blisko i jest bardzo ładny, ale mały w porównaniu do Cytadeli.

Cytadela znajduje się na wzgórzu, na północ od centrum miasta, gdzie do 1945 roku stała Twierdza Winiary. Twierdza została zbudowana w latach 1828 i 1839 na ziemiach dwóch wyludnionych wsi: Bonin i Winiary. To była klasyczna struktura stanowiące część tak zwanego nowego systemu pruskiego. W 1945 roku fortyfikacje Cytadeli zostały w znacznym stopniu zniszczone, a w kolejnych latach większość tego, co zostało, zburzono. W tym czasie  na południowym stoku wzgórza  został stworzony cmentarz żołnierzy radzieckich. W 1962 roku rozpoczęto prace zmierzające do przekształcenia Cytadeli w park. Dziś park, wraz z cmentarzem, ma powierzchnię około 100 hektarów znajdują się tu dwa muzea i cmentarz na południowym stoku wzgórza. Tam  zostali pochowani żołnierze polscy, francuscy, angielscy, amerykańscy i radzieccy.

Jednym z najbardziej zauważalnych elementów Parku Cytadela jest radziecki obelisk znajdujący się w widocznym miejscu, na szczycie wielkich schodów, przy wejściu do parku od strony Alei Armii Poznań. Olbrzymia kolumna w stylu socrealizmu upamiętnia radzieckich żołnierzy poległych 1945 w trakcie oblężenia fortu, a tego, co najciekawsze nie można już zobaczyć: była to duża czerwona gwiazda umieszczona na szczycie obelisku, która zniknęła w środku noc,y po upadku komunizmu w Polsce w 1989 roku.
