The day started out beautiful, blue sky, warm and sunny. Joan woke up about 10 minutes before me, got out of bed and was getting dressed when I woke up, put on my clothes and went just outside to see the day. Then, all of a sudden, the world went black.
I heard Joan calling me and went inside to find her laying half-on the bed. Both of her eyes were fixed looking to the right, her speech was slurred and she couldn't get up. Her left arm, hand and leg were totally weak. I tried desperately to help her up and managed to get her up but she couldn't stand without me holding her up. I laid her back on the bed. The fear that I have had for the last 3 years had come true. She had another stroke, her 3rd.
Not remembering the emergency number in Spain, I called my friend, Carmelo, told him what had happened and he called for an ambulance. In 15 minutes it arrived. San Javier hospital is only 10 minutes away and I thought we would go there. Carmelo's wife is a nurse there and it's very modern. However, when the paramedic called in his report to the hospital with Joan's medical history of aneurysm and strokes, they directed the driver to go to the larger hospital in Cartegna, 30 km. away.
In Cartegna, they found a blood clot in an artery on the left side of Joan's brain. Because of her history, they were not sure of the treatment and sent her to the hospital in Murcia, another 20km. away. That hospital has a specialty with stroke victims.
Once inside and doing further testing, they told me that already Joan was better than earlier because she had a movement of her arm, hand, and leg. The hand is still weak but not like in the morning. The eyes remain as they were. The neurologist said they could not treat the clot intravenously because of her history and the only other way was through a vein in her leg reaching into her brain. However, she felt, after consulting with 2 other neurologists, that it would be a dangerous procedure for Joan and since she had already made some progress, they would wait and re-evaluate her tomorrow.
I asked about the eyes and she said they may correct themselves since they see the clot is already dissolving to some extent. She said Joan would most likely be in the hospital for one week.
This presented a problem for me, living in Ribera 30 km. away without a car and visiting hours are short, only 30 minutes at 1PM and 8PM. My friend Carmelo and his wife, Christina, came to the hospital and we went to a cafe to discuss my problem. Renting a car seemed like the only option. Bus schedules would not help me. For the next 2 hours, they were on their cell phones checking out car rentals until we found one that was acceptable enough.
During that time, Cari and Juan, from the language club, arrived at the hospital also and joined in helping me. I can't express how grateful I am for those 4 people. Not just for their help but because they cared enough to be there for me.
I wasn't going to write this blog tonight, I am just exhausted, but it's a way of getting this out of me. This house is so empty without Joan beside me tonight.
Dzie艅 zacz膮艂 si臋 pi臋knie, ciep艂o i s艂onecznie z b艂臋kitnym niebem. Joanna obudzi艂a si臋 oko艂o 10 minut przede mn膮, wsta艂a z 艂贸偶ka i ubiera艂a si臋, kiedy si臋 obudzi艂em, za艂o偶y艂em moje ubranie i wyszed艂em na zewn膮trz, aby zobaczy膰 ten dzie艅. Wtedy nagle 艣wiat zrobi艂 si臋 czarny.
Us艂ysza艂em, jak Joan do mnie wo艂a艂a, a kiedy wszed艂em do 艣rodka znalaz艂em j膮 le偶膮c膮 w po艂owie 艂贸偶ka. Oboje oczu by艂y nieruchomo patrz膮ce w prawo, jej mowa by艂a niewyra藕na i nie mog艂a wsta膰. Jej lewe rami臋, r臋ka i noga by艂y zupe艂nie s艂abe. Po艂o偶y艂em j膮 z powrotem na 艂贸偶ku. Strach, kt贸ry mia艂em przez ostatnie 3 lata, spe艂ni艂 si臋. Mia艂a kolejny udar, trzeci z kolei.
Kiedy jednak sanitariusz zadzwoni艂 do szpitala z raportem i histori膮 choroby Joanny dotycz膮c膮 t臋tniaka i udar贸w, skierowali kierowc臋 do wi臋kszego szpitala w Cartegnie, oddalonego o 30 km.
W Cartegnie znale藕li zakrzep krwi w t臋tnicy po lewej stronie m贸zgu Joanny. Ten szpital specjalizuje si臋 w leczeniu ofiara udar贸w.
Po zrobieniu tam dalszych bada艅 powiedzieli mi, 偶e stan Joan jest lepsza ni偶 wcze艣niej, bo zrobi艂a ruch r臋k膮, d艂oni膮 i nog膮. Oczy pozostaj膮 takie, jak by艂y. Neurolog powiedzia艂, 偶e nie mog膮 leczy膰 skrzepu do偶ylnie ze wzgl臋du na histori臋 jej choroby, a jedyn膮 inn膮 drog膮 by艂aby 偶y艂a w nodze si臋gaj膮ca do m贸zgu. Jednak po konsultacji z 2 innymi neurologami , neurolog uwa偶a, 偶e b臋dzie to niebezpieczny zabieg dla Joanny, a poniewa偶 stan Joan poprawia si臋, poczekaj膮 i jutro oceni膮 j膮 ponownie.
Zapyta艂am o oczy, a neurolog powiedzia艂a, 偶e same wr贸c膮 do normy, poniewa偶 widz膮, 偶e skrzep ju偶 si臋 w pewnym stopniu rozpuszcza. Powiedzia艂a, 偶e Joan najprawdopodobniej b臋dzie w szpitalu przez tydzie艅.
M贸j przyjaciel Carmelo i jego 偶ona, Christina, przyszli do szpitala i poszli艣my do kawiarni, aby om贸wi膰 m贸j problem. Wynaj臋cie samochodu wydawa艂o si臋 jedyn膮 opcj膮. Rozk艂ady jazdy autobus贸w nie pomog艂yby mi. Przez nast臋pne 2 godziny, sprawdzali w kom贸rkach wypo偶yczalnie samochod贸w, a偶 znale藕li艣my tak膮, kt贸ra by艂a do zaakceptowania.
Nie tylko za ich pomoc, ale te偶 dlatego, 偶e na tyle im zale偶a艂o, by by膰 tam dla mnie.
