Barahonda

Yes, today was our day to visit the Barahonda winery in Yecla. Karen and Joe picked us up at 10:00 and we were off to Yecla via Murcia. The drive took 1 1/2 hours. When we arrived it was partly cloudy but warm.. We were on time but had to wait for another group of Spanish people to join us. It wasn't a problem for the guide who gave the tour in English and Spanish.

When they arrived she told us about the history of the family and the different types of wine they make, but mainly red. When she was done we went into the hall where the fermentation and stabilization tanks were and some barrels of wine. She said the wines, both red and white, are fermented first and then put into the stabilization tanks. The white wine, the only one they make, it then put into bottles. The red wine is different.

The red wine, depending on the grape used is either bottled as a young wine or, if the grape is of higher quality, the wine is put into either American oak barrels or French oak barrels. The French oak is used more for fruity wines.

After the tank room we went into the room where the wooden barrels were kept. They have 3 different sizes, 550L, 300L and 250L.

From there we went to the wine tasting room where we sample 2 different red wines and the one white wine. Tapas were also served with the wine.

Leaving the bodega we found a nice restaurant for lunch and the took a drive to the top of Yecla where we took pictures.
