Memory!

We did a little more Christmas decoration shopping today in Praktiker, bought some bread in Carrefour and had our weekly meeting with Zbyszek at Kandulski's.  Joan wore her new coat so she had to show it off for Zbyszek.  On the walk up to our flat we passed our neighbors on the staircase but I forgot to invite them to our Christmas party.  Guess I'll have to knock on their door tomorrow and do that.

For some unkown reason today I thought back to the first time I went to Posen, Illinois in 2001 to begin my search for my family history.  Posen is the German spelling of the name Pozna艅 and the town was started by a German immigrant.  He bought the land that the town sits on now and started selling small pieces of land to immigrants.  Most of those who bought those pieces were Polish and soon Posen was a Polish community of immigrants.  My grandfather Adam was one of those and that's where he built the first house.  It's the place where all of my American aunts, uncles and my mother were born.  The old wooden church they attended burned down years ago and in it's place stands one now made of bricks.  The house he built is still there although changed from it's original form.  The large porch in front is gone, it has siding now and houses surround it.  In his day, they had a big garden next to it where they planted vegetables and corn that were preserved for the winter.

I remember going to the church office to ask if I could look through their record books to find the birth and baptism record of my mother.  I found it but kept looking through the books out of curiosity and in the end I had the records of all my aunts and uncles.  It was a strange feeling seeing their names in the records, recorded by the printed word of the priest at that time.  I was also able to locate the oldest resident of Posen at that time, went to see her and told her who I was and asked if she remembered any of my Kazmierczak family.  She said she remember my grandfather well and knew the daughters but they were a little older than her so she didn't really know them that well.  It was an amazing day for me in Posen and at night as I was leaving it began to snow, Christmas lights were already on in some houses and I imagined what it must have been like in the 1920's when my family lived there.

I do remember, from my early years, taking trips to Posen from where we lived to visit relatives but I didn't remember who they were.  It was only through my research that I learned it was my grandmothers brother and family who still lived there at that time.

Another amazing thing I have discovered recently is that a brother, Kazimierz, and a sister, Marianna, died in the same year as my great grandmother, Ludwika.  She died in April of 1926, Marianna died in June and Kazimierz died in November.  I am not sure of the cause of death but in Poland at that time there was a cholera and typhus epidemic.

Zrobili艣my troch臋 wi臋cej zakup贸w 艣wi膮tecznych dekoracji dzi艣 w Praktiker, kupi艂 chleb w Carrefour i mia艂 naszego tygodniowego spotkania z Zbyszek w Kandulski's. Joan nosi艂a nowy p艂aszcz wi臋c musia艂a pokaza膰 je na Zbyszka. Chyba b臋d臋 musia艂 zapuka膰 do ich drzwi i zrobi膰 to jutro.

Dla niekt贸rych unkown powodu dzi艣 my艣la艂em powrotem do po raz pierwszy poszed艂em do Posen, Illinois w 2001 r., aby rozpocz膮膰 moje poszukiwania historii mojej rodziny. Wi臋kszo艣膰 z tych, kt贸rzy kupili te kawa艂ki by艂y Polska i wkr贸tce Posen by艂 polskiej spo艂eczno艣ci imigrant贸w. M贸j dziadek Adam by艂 jednym z tych i to, gdzie zbudowa艂 pierwszy dom. Jest to miejsce, gdzie wszystkie moje ameryka艅skie ciotki, wujowie i moja matka urodzili. Stary drewniany ko艣ci贸艂 sp艂on膮艂, do kt贸rych ucz臋szczali lat temu w jego miejscu znajduje si臋 jedna teraz z ceg艂y. Dom zbudowa艂 nadal istnieje, cho膰 zmienia si臋 to pierwotnej formie. W jego dzie艅, by艂 du偶y ogr贸d obok, gdzie uprawy warzyw i kukurydzy, kt贸re zosta艂y zakonserwowane na zim臋.

To by艂 niesamowity dzie艅 dla mnie w Poznaniu i w nocy jak opuszcza艂em zacz膮艂 pada膰 艣nieg, 艣wiat艂a Bo偶ego Narodzenia ju偶 w niekt贸rych domach i wyobra偶a艂em sobie, co musi by膰 jak w 1920 kiedy moja rodzina mieszka艂a tam.

Zmar艂a w kwietniu 1926 roku, Marianna zmar艂a w czerwcu i Kazimierz zmar艂 w listopadzie.
