Another year coming.

A the real countdown is tonight and we'll watch the celebration televised in Wrocław because they put on the best show, according to Joan and David :-). In preparation for tomorrow's dinner I took #64 bus to Jeżyce outdoor market and purchased two duck breasts, cost 22zl($5.50). They have the best fresh meat in a little kiosk there. I was about 6 seconds late to catch the bus to the market so I had to wait 15 minutes for the next one and it was cold,(-1) outside. When the bus did arrive the heat inside was not on so the ride there, 15 minutes, was also cold. I bought the breast and just as I got to the bustop to go back home the bus pulled away, therefore I had to wait another 15 minutes but this time the bus was heated. The whole trip took an hour because of missing the busses. Normally it takes me a half hour for the round trip when I get to the bus on time.

Joan spent the hour preparing an apple pie for dessert later. We have a bottle of champagne someone gave us which we will use to welcome in the new year. We definitely won't be going out tonight among all the crazy celebrators and drunken drivers on the roads. We'll watch a movie or two then turn on the television about 23:00 and watch the party going on. It's -1c here but in Estepona, Spain it's 21c and sunny. With weather like that I could, maybe, see going to a New Years celebration but not at -1c. What we need is a house in Spain for the winter but that isn't going to happen.

Our old time friend Bob Savage, the guitar player wrote back to me and filled me in on what happened in his life the last 20 years including three new children. I guess I'm one of those people who seek out old cquaintances you lost touch with to see how their life turned out. Even in his 60's he is still playing music with a band called The Fret Brothers and has several video's on YouTube. If you check them out, he is the guitar player sitting down and singing the vocals. In his earlier days he was heavy into jazz but I guess he realized there isn't a lot of work available for jazz musicians in the U.S. unless you're in the top echelon. It makes me happy to see him playing and still working at it.

So, from Joan and I wish you a happy, healthy, fulfilling new year and thanks for reading our blog.

Wieczorem zaczyna się prawdziwe odliczanie, a my będziemy oglądać w telewizji celebrację powitania Nowego Roku we Wrocławiu, ponieważ, według Joan i David J, dają tam najlepszy koncert.

Bob, nawet, kiedy przekroczył 60. wciąż  gra z zespołem o nazwie The Fret Brothers i ma kilka wideo w serwisie YouTube. Widząc go nadal pracującego i grającego czuję się szczęśliwy.

Tak więc, Joan i ja, życzymy Wam wszystkim szczęśliwego, zdrowego i spełnionego Nowego Roku i dziękujemy za czytanie naszego bloga.

Almost here.

Now the countdown will begin for this new year to arrive. More adventures, more places to see and I just reconnected with a fellow guitar player I haven't heard from in20 or more years. The benefits of the internet.

Teraz rozpocznie się odliczanie do nadejścia nowego roku. Więcej przygód, więcej miejsc do zobaczenia.

Snow?

So, Christmas is over and although it's a nice picture above, I can get by without the snow now. Yes, it is pretty, does give you the feeling the world is peaceful but in reality it is not. Just watch the news on television and it quickly dispels the illusion of peace on earth. That is why we don't watch it often. Wouldn't it be nice if there was one channel that only gave you the good news in the world?

The good news is I finished my Polish homework, Joan is preparing chicken stew for tonight and I have resumed my conversations on Skype.

This year we were fortunate to visit Spain, England, Budapest, Golina, Koszalin and Żielona Gora. Now we're planning the next year already and know Budapest is for sure and, unfortunately for me only, the U.S.

Watch the video on the right side-A Day in Poznań

Nikki's present.

Happy to to receive this picture of the guitar I sent to our granddaughter, Nikki, and she received it in time for Christmas. Now she can start her lessons with her own guitar. She already plays piano and oboe so this will be a nice addition to her musical talents. Who knows, if she practices a lot she could be as good as Gabriella Quevedo, a young girl from Sweden who has a lot video's on YouTube. I sent Nikki a link to them to give her a little inspiration. My musical career ended years ago but I kept two guitars and now they belong to a nephew and granddaughter.

Joan and I did our weekly shopping a little early because of the holiday coming up. cost 126 zl for the week.

Earlier we studied Spanish then I studied Polish. Still haven't done my homework but I have another week since Zbyszek won't return until the 4th of January. I received some papers from PZU about the car and gave them to my insurance man to translate them for me. There's just too many technical words for me to do it on my own.

We're still receiving Christmas cards from around Poland and one from the U.S. It's a little amusing that the one from the U.S. was mailed after the Polish ones were and yet they arrived on the same day. Do you think the Polish mail system needs to move into the 21st century? It's kind of like our current government.

Szczęśliwy, aby otrzymać ten obraz gitary wysłałem do naszej wnuczki, Nikki, a otrzymała ją w czasie świąt Bożego Narodzenia. Wysłałem Nikki link do nich, aby dać jej trochę inspiracji.

Today we are celebrating the birthdays of my son, Eric, age 47 and my sister, Tami, age 57. Don't know where the time went but it flew by.

A beautiful sky this early morning.

Coming home.

So, our trip back home began at 9:00 after breakfast when Marta and Stefan took us to the train station in Dulmen. As the day began normally gray it changed to a sunny day as we reached Dortmund, our first stop. Along the way I took a series of photos of the countryside that I have posted today. At this moment we are half way to Berlin so our return is only half complete.

What can I say about this Christmas spent in Germany? For sure it was very different as far as traditional Polish Christmas eve. Eating meat was probably the biggest difference for me as it is not part of the Polish custom. Not having any snow was normal in these days of global warming and not really any surprise. Meeting the family of Stefan was very nice and it was good to be able to talk with the young ones in English and get their young points of view of their lives and where they might be headed. Maybe what surprised me the most was how tall they were already at such young age of 16 and 18. Meeting Conny and V.olker was very nice and we enjoyed their company for a day before they left for their own home not far from where Marta lives.

Munster was very nice to visit but probably better to see when it is full of tourists and the holiday lights are turned on. Of course, without the tourist's it was easy to visit the old church and walk around without a crowd of people. We are already thinking about next Christmas, maybe in Spain or where there is snow.

We arrived back home at 17:30 from Berlin after taking numerous pictures of the countryside traveling through Germany and then Berlin. I deleted a lot of them because I'm not quite up to speed on taking pictures while on the move and they turned out blurry. I will have to watch that video again to fix that mistake. It's always good to be back home and hearing the Polish language being spoken by everyone, at least I can understand a lot of it. Of course, there are slideshows of our trip on the right hand side of this blog and I hope Volker, Alina and Chantal will become readers of the blog and comment to me.

Christmas day.

So, the first half of Dec. 24th was with just a few people having barszcz, pierogi's and kutia for obiad. Stefan, Marta, Conny, Volker, Joan and I were those people. Then at about 20:00 the rest of Stefan's family arrived bringing with them a lot of food of different types prepared by his sister, mother and grandmother. None of it was the traditional Polish Christmas food and we didn't expect it to be. There were two different types of salads, a special large bread mad with herbs, a huge container of goulash and another of beef. Naturally, after dinner there were desserts including tiraamisu. There were several young people attending who spoke English and I.had the opportunity to talk with. them and see what their.outlook for their future. It's a little early for them to know, one is 22, one, 20, on 18 and one 16. The older ones, Alina and Chantal had more of an idea than the young boys. All of them were tall, 6 foot or a little higher.

I thought it would be a good idea too take a lot of pictures, as usual, but then I thought more about family pictures for the family of Stefan and I went in that direction taking pictures of his whole family eventually. I think in the future it will be something they can look back at, a time when they were all together for Christmas eve.

Christmas day Conny and Volker went back home and the four of us, Stefan, Marta, Joan and I drove to the town of Munster to see it. Of course, it was mostly deserted because of the day but there were a few people
walking around. We visited the main church, I took a lot of pictures and then we found a place that was open for coffe, the Cafe and Bar Celona.

Wigilia(early)

We stated out at 9:30 by taxi to the train station, Caught the first train on time and made it to Berlin for our first transfer and that's where our problems began. A young man said we had to go to the bottom level of the four level train station but we couldn't get to that level. We found an employee and he said the get on the train on ther track right now and get off in 5 stops. We were very hesitant to do it but we did. We got to the right platform only to learn that the train would be an hour late, making us miss our connect in Essen to Dulmin. I tried calling to Marta but in coach the connection is very bad and I didn't succeed. I sent an sms of HELP to her and finally we were able to connect.

We finally connected at 19:25 in Dulmen where Marta was waiting for us and took us to her house. We had dinner, drank some wine and were happy to be in bed by 22:30. Having internet problems pictures may be displayed later.

Thanks.

Thanks, Basia and Lucie, for your comments. Joan and I wish you a Merry Christmas and to all readers of this blog. I have no desire to stop writing it. It has provided me with new friends, occasionally with another new relative and has helped a few people who wanted to move to Poland but didn't know how to do it or what they needed to do as far as documents. Posting pictures of our travels let's you share our experiences in different places, cities and countries. It's also a way of showing you the many beautiful places in Poland. It's been ten years now since I wrote the first one and I hope I have at least ten more.

The last time we talked with the grandchildren on Skype, Nikki, our granddaughter said she would start guitar lessons soon but had no guitar. I just happen to have one guitar left from my days of playing years ago so I told her I would send it to here. Today I finally made it to Lot airlines to have it shipped and she will have it before the new year begins. So, now my nephew has one of my guitars and our granddaughter has the other. I'm happy to have passed them on to family members.

For expediency we are having pizza tonight for dinner and then we will pack for our trip. Tomorrow at this time we should be half way through Germany on our way to the final destination, as long as we make the right train connections. :-) Like normal for me, I starting to get excited now, the day before we leave. I probably won't have time to post tomorrow because of travel time but that should be the only day.

White Christmas?

A white Christmas will only come to us this year through memories of old ones. Christmas in the U.P was always white and when I was young also. However, greed, profits and the disregard for this planet's environment has changed all that and I don't want to get into that discussion at this time of the year. I would rather just remember then many beautiful white Christmases I have had in my life. Maybe next year we will spend it in a place where we can be assured of one more.

At this time in two days we will be making our way through Germany via a train and we're looking forward to the journey. It should be an interesting experience having Christmas in Germany. Naturally, I would rather spend Wigilia with family but that isn't going to happen so at least we can spend it with friends. I'm finding that, with the exception of a few family members, friends are better than family. Tomorrow evening we will pack a small suitcase for our trip and then Wednesday morning take a taxi to the train station for our train.

Thanks to you readers who sent Christmas greetings to Joan and I. We appreciate it.

When I think of Christmas, my first picture in my mind is the one my brother took, years ago when I was serving in the military just after he had served. The picture is of the Christmas tree and instead of an angel or a star on the top of it, my brother put a hat that I wore sometimes at home. He put it up there to remind everyone of me while I was not there for Christmas. It's been 42 years since he died but he's never far from my memories of him.

Doceniamy to.

The tree.

I woke up at 8:00 while Joan was still sleeping and went to our storage area to get our tree and decorations. By the time she woke up I had the tree assembled and ready to decorate. We put the two lines of 100 lights on the tree only to discover they were not enough. I don't know why. The tree didn't grow since last year and last year the tree looked great. No matter, we got dressed and went to Praktiker to get another set of 100 lights and bought a few new decorations for the house. I saw a cute little stuffed snowman and thought it would be a nice little present for the shy little girl who lives next door. We went home, knocked on her door, her father answered and I told him we had a present for Zuzanna. He called her, she shyly came to the door, took the present and thanked us. We unlocked our door and went in to continue decorating our tree.

It took about an hour and a half to finiish it, then we put up decorations in the house. While we decorated we listened to Polish Christmas carols performed by the Golec Orchestra. We like them because because they have a way of playing carols in a more modern way and they are very musical.  We've already sent out invitations to our after New Years party on the 16th of January and hope none of the Christmas tree lights burn out before then. Now Joan is in the kitchen preparing dinner tonight, chicken paprakasz. Slideshow of tree on the right side of blog.

Trwało to około półtorej godziny,  a następnie rozstawiliśmy dekoracje w domu.

Gifts.

I visited with a friend of ours, Joanna, and she gave us early Christmas presents since we won't be here for Christmas. The first was a bottle of Wiśniowka that her husband made and put into an old bottle of Krupnik. The second was the most unusual gift, a calendar with a different kind of fruit for each month. What is unique about this calendar is that when you rub your fingers over the smell you actually get the scent of that particular fruit. Joan tried all 12 months and each had a different scent. Pretty amazing! The third gift was chocolates and the fourth a karioke DVD of Polish carols that you sing along with. Now all we have to do is learn the carols.

After consulting with my wife we have decided to a post New Years party on the 16th of January and invite about 15 friends. It will be a nice break for them after returning to work after the holiday vacation.

Rózia and Marek.

Last night we visited cousin Luka's house to celebrate the birthday of her husband, Marek, and their daughter, Rózia, who is now fourteen and in the second year of high school. We first met Rózia when she was 2 years old and I fell in love with her. We don't see them very often even though they live in the same town as we do. We didn;t know what to buy her for a present so we gave her some money to buy what she wanted.  I specifically wrote a greeting to her on her birthday card in English and she was able to read and understand it all. I once offered to help her learn English but the offer wasn't accepted.

Also in their house were the parents of Marek so I had a chance to speak with them in Polish. We stayed for an hour and a half. Luka served cake and tea and then Rózia and her parents performed a few songs on accordion, flute and recorder. Rózia is now back with a private flute teacher and taking more lessons. As you can see in the slideshow, she is growing taller.

Today I had my last Polish lesson for the year and then we went and spent 122 zl for this weeks food.

Luka serwowała ciasto i herbatę, a następnie Rózia i jej rodzice zagrali kilka utworów na akordeon i flet z podkładem z odtwarzacza.

Returm of Ola.

I picked up Ola from the dentist office and took her to our home. She's been studying in the U.S. since last September and the first time we have seen her since then. She told us all about you experiences living in Florida, how much she likes the weather and sunshine, meeting lots of new people and that she has a 4.0 grade average at her university. We were happy to hear that. She is happy to be home but also happy that she will return to Florida in 21 days. Who can blame her? Warm weather, blue skies, sunshine and the beach. We'll try to see her again before she goes back if she has the free time.

Ciepła pogoda, błękitne niebo, słońce i plaża. Postaramy się ponownie z nią zobaczyć, zanim pojedzie z powrotem, jeśli będzie miała wolny czas.

Police

I went to the police station, at their request, and told the story of the accident again. Nobody spoke English so I hope they understood my Polish. I thought they would have had the report from the first police who were on the scene but they didn't.

Met with Zbyszek today and he'll be going north to Poczyn Zdrój spa for the holidays. He won't return until Jan 3rd so Friday will be our last lesson this year.

Welcome Whitey.

So, here is our new Fiat Panda. I took it out of the garage to take these pictures now that the old car is gone. On the back seat sit 4 winter tires that will be put on the car and we will store the summer tires in the garage. We're both happy with the new car and oven although not so happy we had to buy a car.

The police called and want me to come into their station and make another statement. They gave me the name of the young man who caused the accident and it turned out he was also insured by PZU. I won't have Zbyszek to act as a translator so I hope my Polish is good enough to explain my side of the story. I must admit I am a little nervous because of that.
