Joe's haircut & shave.

Friday was all about grandson Joe getting a haircut and shave from Enrique. I wanted him to have the experience of a truly great haircut and a straight razor shave and for that there is no one better that I know than Enrique. We arrived on time at 11:00 and it began.

First was the haircut which did not take too long because Joe already had short hair. The shave, however, took longer.

First was the application of the creamy soap to his face and the first shave with the razor. Next was a heated towel placed on his face to soften the skin more and remove the soap. Next came more shaving cream and a second, closer shave, followed by a colder towel to remove the cream. Finally the last removal of any hairs with the razor. A nice cologne was added to his face. This took about 45 minutes.

When he was done his hair was washed, and dried by Enrique. With a hair dryer Enrique formed the haircut and Joe was finished.

Joe was extremely happy with the haircut, shave and the whole experience. I, of course, took numerous pictures which I have posted.

Chcia艂em, 偶eby do艣wiadczy艂 naprawd臋 wspania艂ej fryzury i prostego golenia brzytwy, i 偶e nie ma nikogo lepszego, ni偶 ja znam Enrique. Przyjechali艣my o godzinie 11:00 i to si臋 zacz臋艂o.

Najpierw by艂a fryzura, kt贸ra nie trwa艂a zbyt d艂ugo, poniewa偶 Joe mia艂 ju偶 kr贸tkie w艂osy. Golenie trwa艂o jednak d艂u偶ej.

Pierwszym by艂o na艂o偶enie kremowego myd艂a na twarz i pierwsze golenie maszynk膮. Nast臋pny by艂 podgrzewany r臋cznik umieszczony na twarzy, aby bardziej zmi臋kczy膰 sk贸r臋 i usun膮膰 myd艂o. Nast臋pnie przyszed艂 wi臋cej kremu do golenia i drugie, bli偶sze golenie, a nast臋pnie ch艂odniejszy r臋cznik do usuni臋cia kremu. Wreszcie ostatnie usuni臋cie w艂os贸w maszynk膮. Do jego twarzy dodano przyjemn膮 wod臋 kolo艅sk膮. Zaj臋艂o to oko艂o 45 minut.

Z suszark膮 do w艂os贸w Enrique stworzy艂 fryzur臋, a Joe sko艅czy艂.

Joe by艂 bardzo zadowolony z fryzury, golenia i ca艂ego do艣wiadczenia. Oczywi艣cie zrobi艂em wiele zdj臋膰, kt贸re opublikowa艂em

K & J arrive

Too busy yesterday to write. Karen and Joe arrived about 12:00 and we went to the beach area for a nice breakfast of eggs and ham. They told us all about the adventures they had in Barcelona, how fantastic the weather was, how crazy the traffic is, that they hadn't slept for almost 2 days because there was so much they wanted to see and do and so little time to see it all. They took a 5 hour train ride to Alicante on Wednesday, rented a car and drove down to their Airbnb place they rented close to our place. The owner met them, about 22:00, gave them the keys and then left. The owner didn't speak any English. When they tried opening the door, they had difficulty with the key and it took them about 10 minutes to figure out how to do it.

Yesterday after breakfast we drove to Bateria de Castellitos so they could see the BIG guns on top of the mountain. Joe did the driving up and down the winding, narrow mountain road and I was able to view the scenery. That was nice. We managed to get Joan to the compound but not up the winding staircase so she remained in her chair below while I took Karen and Joe to the top to see the guns. Naturally, they were amazed at their size but more amazed at the fantastic scenery of the bay of Cartagena and the Mediterranean Sea. It is quite awesome to view both of them at the same time. Joe used his flashlight on his phone so we also explored the dark tunnels of the interior compound.

We got back the Ribera about 18:30, did some food shopping at Carrefour and decided to have dinner at Casa Pedro. Carmen told me it was a good restaurant so I called to see if they were open. By then it was already 20:00 and they were. We put the location into Google maps, it was just a short distance away. Following the instructions, we couldn't find it. I got out of the car and asked someone where it was. He told me and to my wonderment realized we have passed it many times going to Marazul for coffee.

All of our dinners were excellent and Pedro recommended a very good local wine as well. We finished dinner about 22:30 and returned home. Today we start the day with Joe's haircut and shave at 11:00.

A tour.

A call from the Barahonda bodega and our winery tour is all set for April 2nd at 12:00. We were going to lunch in their restaurant but looking at their menu and prices, I decided against it. Prices are too high. Instead we will have lunch in the town of Yecla at the restaurant La Zaranda. It has more variety in it's menu and lower prices suitable for us. We may not have the panoramic view of the valley but our pocket book will be happier and everything I have read about that restaurant looks good. At this time the weather is predicted to be sunny, subject to change of course. We've been having some cloudy, cool days lately and even some rain. It would be nice if all the days were sunny when the kids are here but we do need the rain.

We talked with Karen this morning and they are having a marvelous time in Barcelona. They wre able to ride the elevator to the top tower of La Sagrada Familia and get fantastic views of the city Plus, they were the only two people on the elevator so they were totally alone on the viewing tower. Today the planned to see the Picasso Museum  and I suggested two mor buildings, of Gaudi, Casa Milla and Palau Guell. Joe had heard of them and already was interested in seeing them.

I met with Pedro this morning for our talk and he gave me the name of 3 more wines to try. He has been busy this week helping a friend plant a new vineyard.

Ceny s膮 zbyt wysokie. Zamiast tego zjemy obiad w mie艣cie Yecla w restauracji La Zaranda. Menu ma wi臋ksz膮 r贸偶norodno艣膰, ceny s膮 ni偶sze ceny, odpowiednie dla nas. Na obecn膮 chwil臋 przewiduje si臋, 偶e pogoda b臋dzie s艂oneczna, z zastrze偶eniem zmiany, oczywi艣cie. Ostatnio mieli艣my troch臋 pochmurnych, ch艂odnych dni, a nawet troch臋 deszczu. By艂oby mi艂o, gdyby wszystkie dni by艂y s艂oneczne, kiedy dzieci s膮 tutaj, ale potrzebujemy deszczu.

Dzi艣 rano rozmawiali艣my z Karen i wspaniale sp臋dzaj膮 czas w Barcelonie. Mogli wjecha膰 wind膮 na najwy偶sz膮 wie偶臋 La Sagrada Familia i podziwia膰 fantastyczne widoki na miasto. Dzisiaj planowali zobaczy膰 Muzeum Picassa, a ja zasugerowa艂em dwa budynki, takie jak Gaudi, Casa Milla i Palau Guell. Joe s艂ysza艂 o nich i ju偶 by艂 zainteresowany ich zobaczeniem.

W tym tygodniu by艂 zaj臋ty pomaganiem przyjacielowi w zak艂adaniu nowej winnicy.

Bench..

Now I have heard it all......I was shocked when I found out about buying tickets for the Alhambra 3 months in advance but now that is nothing.

We talked with Karen and Joe this morning who arrived in Barcelona at 6:25 with 6 hours on their hands before they could check into their hotel. They found a place and had breakfast, visited the Gaudi house and then went to visit Park Guell, also designed by Gaudi. Entrance is free and the most famous thing in the park is the great mosaic bench he built.  Joan and I sat on it 8 years ago and took pictures. All you had to do was wait for someone to get up and leave a free space to sit down, NOT anymore. Now you have to BUY a ticket just to sit on the bench. How preposterous!!!A ticket just to sit on the bench!! Talk about commercialization taking over!

The focal point of the park is the main terrace, surrounded by a long bench in the form of a sea serpent. The curves of the serpent bench form a number of enclaves, creating a more social atmosphere. Gaud铆 incorporated many motifs of Catalan  nationalism, and elements from religious mysticism and ancient poetry, into the Park. Much of the design of the benches was the work not of Gaud铆 but of his often overlooked collaborator Josep Jujol.

Teraz wszystko to s艂ysza艂em ...... By艂em zszokowany, gdy dowiedzia艂em si臋 o zakupie bilet贸w na Alhambr臋 3 miesi膮ce wcze艣niej, ale teraz to nic.

Rozmawiali艣my dzi艣 rano z Karen i Joe, kt贸rzy przybyli do Barcelony o 6:25 z 6 godzinami na r臋kach, zanim mogli sprawdzi膰 w hotelu. Znale藕li miejsce i zjedli 艣niadanie, odwiedzili dom Gaudiego, a nast臋pnie poszli odwiedzi膰 Park Guell, r贸wnie偶 zaprojektowany przez Gaudiego. Wej艣cie jest bezp艂atne, a najbardziej znan膮 rzecz膮 w parku jest wspania艂a mozaikowa 艂awka, kt贸r膮 zbudowa艂. Joan i ja siedzieli艣my na nim 8 lat temu i robili艣my zdj臋cia. Wszystko, co musieli艣cie zrobi膰, to poczeka膰, a偶 kto艣 wstanie i zostawi膰 woln膮 przestrze艅, by usi膮艣膰, ju偶 NIE. Teraz musisz KUPI膯 bilet, aby usi膮艣膰 na 艂awce. Porozmawiaj o przej臋ciu komercjalizacji!

Centralnym punktem parku jest g艂贸wny taras, otoczony d艂ug膮 艂awk膮 w postaci w臋偶a morskiego. Krzywe 艂awki w臋偶a tworz膮 wiele enklaw, tworz膮c bardziej spo艂eczn膮 atmosfer臋. Gaud铆 w艂膮czy艂 do parku wiele motyw贸w katalo艅skiego nacjonalizmu i element贸w z religijnego mistycyzmu i staro偶ytnej poezji.

Time flys!

30 days! Yes, that's all we have left to enjoy this great  place. 2 months have already slipped by. Thinking of this last month, the thought came about how to spend semana santa(Easter). We could just stay in Ribera for the procession here but thought also about going to Murcia or Cartagena for a larger celebration. Both cities have large celebrations, processions everyday from Palm Sunday until Easter Sunday. We considered the pro's and con's of each city, not really any negatives for either one. Both are only 1/2 hour away.

But then we thought about Lorca, 1 1/2 hours to the northwest of us. They have the most unusual celebratory processions in all of Murcia.

This fiesta is also known as the 'Whites and the Blues'. Although there are other fraternities in Lorca, these two are the most important and there is a clear rivalry between them. The grand procession takes place in what is known as 'La Carrera'. There are people dressed as Roman emperors, Egyptian troops, Roman gods in heavy carriages, chariots and on horseback, and sculptures of virgins with rich embroidered robes, luxurious standards, and so on. The standard of the 'Prayer in the Garden' (white), better known as 'the floral cloth', is noteworthy.

The most highly anticipated floats include Cleopatra, carried on the shoulders of Egyptian troops, or the Antichrist, with its demonic appearance. There are also chariot races. On Good Friday, the town is a splash of color, gold and sliver in a Baroque procession where the Brotherhood (white and blue) try to be the best. The Whites gather round the Virgin of the Affliction, while the patron saint of the Blues is the Virgin of the Suffering.

Easter week is one of the most spectacular and emotional fiestas there. Religious devotion, art, color and music combine in acts to commemorate the death of Jesus Christ: the processions. Members of the different Easter brotherhoods, dressed in their characteristic robes, parade through the streets carrying religious statues (pasos) to the sound of drums and music – scenes of sober beauty.

Check out the video of the event we will see on the right of the blog.

30 dni! Min臋艂y ju偶 2 miesi膮ce. My艣l膮c o tym w zesz艂ym miesi膮cu, przysz艂a my艣l, jak sp臋dzi膰 semana santa (Wielkanoc). Mogliby艣my po prostu zosta膰 w Ribera na procesji, ale pomy艣leli艣my tak偶e o udaniu si臋 do Murcji lub Cartageny na wi臋ksze uroczysto艣ci. Oba miasta maj膮 du偶e uroczysto艣ci, procesje codziennie od Niedzieli Palmowej do Niedzieli Wielkanocnej. Obie s膮 tylko p贸艂 godziny drogi.

S膮 te偶 wy艣cigi rydwan贸w. Biali gromadz膮 si臋 wok贸艂 Dziewicy Nieszcz臋艣cia, podczas gdy patron Bluesa jest Dziewic膮 cierpienia.

Tydzie艅 wielkanocny jest jednym z najbardziej spektakularnych i emocjonalnych fiest. Pobo偶no艣膰 religijna, sztuka, kolor i muzyka 艂膮cz膮 si臋 w akcjach upami臋tniaj膮cych 艣mier膰 Jezusa Chrystusa: procesje. Cz艂onkowie r贸偶nych bractw wielkanocnych, ubrani w charakterystyczne szaty, paraduj膮 ulicami nios膮c pos膮gi religijne (pasos) na d藕wi臋k b臋bn贸w i muzyki - sceny trze藕wego pi臋kna.

Granada

After talking with Karen and Joe today we decided to go to Granada and spend April 3rd and 4th there visiting the interesting places even though we won't be able to get into the Alhambra. Joe knows someone from his college that spent 6 months there and she loved living there so she highly recommended seeing it.

Today was a gray, cloudy rainy day and we stayed at home most of the day.

Po dzisiejszych rozmowach z Karen i Joe postanowili艣my uda膰 si臋 do Granady i sp臋dzi膰 tam 3 i 4 kwietnia odwiedzaj膮c interesuj膮ce miejsca, chocia偶 nie b臋dziemy mogli dosta膰 si臋 do Alhambry. Joe zna kogo艣 ze swojego college'u, kt贸ry sp臋dzi艂 tam 6 miesi臋cy i uwielbia艂a tam mieszka膰, wi臋c bardzo go poleci艂a.

Dzisiaj by艂 szary, pochmurny deszczowy dzie艅 i sp臋dzili艣my wi臋kszo艣膰 dnia w domu.

Seafood

One of the advantages of living near the sea is the availability of seafood.  Joan's new seafood recipe called for a package of frozen seafood and I found the perfect one in Dos Mares, a package for Paella. In it is lobster, mussels, fish, squid, peas, clams, shrimp and pimento. The cost was 4.50 Euro(19 PLN)($5).

Sarah, I will let you know how good it was. You can see the package in the above picture.

Checking the prices for entrance to La Alhambra, I was shocked to see how much they have gone up. We were there 8 years ago and I think we paid 12-15 Euro each to see everything. Plus, it was a 2 day pass. Now, to see everything, the cost is 59 Euro. That is quite a large increase and I don't know if it is for a one day or 2 day visit. You could not really see everything in one day without rushing through it. The best idea would be to read the book, Tales of the Alhambra by Washington Irving, and then make a plan to visit it.

The weather has been in the 60's this week and will stay like that. We've had some rain and clouds with the sun breaking through every now and then to remind us it's still here. Joan's been reading a lot while I continue to forage ahead with Spanish.

Jedn膮 z zalet 偶ycia w pobli偶u morza jest dost臋pno艣膰 owoc贸w morza. Koszt wyni贸s艂 4,50 euro (19 z艂) (5 USD).

Sarah, dam ci zna膰, jakie to by艂o dobre. Mo偶esz zobaczy膰 opakowanie na obrazku powy偶ej.

Sprawdzaj膮c ceny wst臋pu do La Alhambra, by艂em zszokowany, widz膮c, jak bardzo wzros艂y. Byli艣my tam 8 lat temu i my艣l臋, 偶e zap艂acili艣my po 12-15 euro ka偶dy, aby zobaczy膰 wszystko. Plus, 偶e by艂 to 2-dniowy karnet. Teraz, aby zobaczy膰 wszystko, koszt wynosi 59 euro. Najlepszym pomys艂em by艂oby przeczytanie ksi膮偶ki „Tales of the Alhambra” autorstwa Washington Irving, a nast臋pnie zrobienie planu zwiedzenia.

Joan du偶o czyta艂a, podczas gdy ja pr臋 naprz贸d z hiszpa艅skim.

Come with me.....

Step out of our house, turn left and walk 10 steps to the end of it. There you have a view of the "side yard".
It's not a "yard" the way you may think of it, it's all concrete with a patch of green artificial turf, a table, 4 chairs and 2 large palm trees. It stretches back to the next 5 houses and each has the same patch of artificial green but some also have lemon or orange trees growing in their yards. It's strange but you never see anyone picking the lemons or oranges. Many just drop to the ground and rot.

Now, turn left and walk another 15 steps and the wall of the house has a recess with an overhang. The recess is where the wall of the bedroom is. In this place are 2 chairs and 2 clothes lines for drying clothes. However, the sun does not reach the lines until about 2'o'clock in the afternoon and most of the drying is done by the warm air. The 2 chairs are importan because I sit there in the early morning or sometimes late at night when Joan is sleeping. It's a good place to think about the coming day or what transpired during the day. Sometimes the gray and black cat strolls by, looks at me, stops for a minute and then wanders off.
Directly across from me is the building of my Portugese neighbors who I occasionally talk with. In the street I can see the glow of the two yellow street lights at night and, rarely, hear a car come down the street. This will all change when the massive amounts of tourist arrive just after Easter but we will be gone.

I like being here at this time of year but wouldn't like to be here during tourist season. I've been told it is a madhouse of people and noise 24/7. If I lived here permanently, I would have to go back to Poland for the summers.

The "front yard" is just dirt with a few little trees but I put that overturned chair against the wall of the house in the daytime and catch the sun.

Sarah, The seafood pasta was delicious but mot at all creamy, plus not enough seafood in the mix. However definitely worth making. I will post the recipe later.

Wyjd藕 z naszego domu, skr臋膰 w lewo i id藕 10 krok贸w do ko艅ca. Teraz skr臋膰 w lewo i id藕 kolejne 15 krok贸w, gdzie 艣ciana domu ma wg艂臋bienie z okapem. Wn臋ka jest tam, gdzie jest 艣ciana sypialni. W tym miejscu znajduj膮 si臋 2 krzes艂a i 2 linki do suszenia ubra艅. Te dwa krzes艂a s膮 wa偶ne, poniewa偶 siedz臋 tam wczesnym rankiem lub czasami p贸藕no w nocy, kiedy Joan 艣pi. Lubi臋 tu by膰 o tej porze roku, ale nie chcia艂bym tu by膰 w sezonie turystycznym. Powiedziano mi, 偶e to dom wariat贸w i ha艂as 24/7. Gdybym mieszka艂 tu na sta艂e, musia艂bym wraca膰 do Polski na lato.

Parejo del paraiso

Yes, the Bird of Paradise. It sits in front of our house waiting to open up. It's been like this for about a week now like in the picture above on the blog. I think a few good, hot days will be enough for it to open.

Today was not one of those days, starting out cloudy, windy and raining in the morning, then blue skies and sunny in the early afternoon and now close to evening, cloudy and gray again. I don't mind it because it's only temporary. Another day or so and the sun will recapture it's normal place in the daily sky and the rain will be non-existent. It rarely rains here.

It was food shopping day for me, a successful day with the busses to and from Dos Mares. Our cost was a little high, 36 Euro($41)(155 PLN) because I bought a mixture of seafood for a new recipe Joan is making, Creamy Seafood Pasta. but not tonight. This evening she is making a large salad of lettuce, mushrooms, ham, avocado's, tomato's and cheese with blue cheese dressing.

I gave a proposal to Karen for the days of their visit to see Murcia, Cartagena, the BIG guns on top of the mountain, visit a few bodegas, take the ferry across the bay to La Manga for Lunch one day, have our grandson get a haircut and shave from Enrique and spend 2 days in Granada visiting La Alhambra.

Tak, strelicja. Ro艣nie przed naszym domem i czeka na to, by rozkwitn膮膰. My艣l臋, 偶e kilka dobrych, gor膮cych dni wystarczy, by zakwit艂a.
Dzisiaj by艂 jeden z tych dni, kt贸ry rano zacz膮艂 si臋 pochmurnie, wietrznie i deszczowo, potem, we wczesnych godzinach popo艂udniowych pokaza艂o si臋 b艂臋kitne niebo i s艂o艅ce, a teraz blisko wieczoru, zn贸w jest pochmurno i szaro.

To by艂 dla mnie dzie艅 zakupu 偶ywno艣ci, udany dzie艅, 艂膮cznie z autobusami do i z Dos Mares. Koszt by艂 troch臋 wysoki, 36 euro (41 dolar贸w) (155 z艂), poniewa偶 kupi艂em mieszank臋 owoc贸w morza do nowego przepisu, kt贸ry Joan wykorzysta: kremowy makaron z owoc贸w morza. Ale nie dzisiejszego wieczoru. Tego wieczoru robi du偶膮 sa艂atk臋 z sa艂aty, grzyb贸w, szynki, awokado, pomidor贸w i sera z dressingiem z sera ple艣niowego.

Zaproponowa艂em Karen, by w dniach ich wizyty zobaczy膰 Murcj臋, Cartagen臋, BIG-y na szczycie g贸ry, odwiedzi膰 kilka bodegas, pewnego dnia pop艂yn膮膰 promem przez zatok臋 do La Manga na lunch, ostrzy膰 i ogoli膰 naszego wnuka u Enrique i sp臋dzi膰 2 dni w Granadzie odwiedzaj膮c La Alhambra.

Bored.

Big change in weather from short sleeved shirt yesterday to a coat today. It happened over night with strong winds blowing in from the bay. We stayed in the house all day not doing much and just waiting for the day to pass, Tomorrow is another adventure on the bus to Dos Mares for food shopping. Hopefully this time the bus will stop for me and I won't have to walk all the way home.

Du偶a zmiana pogody z koszuli z kr贸tkim r臋kawem wczoraj na p艂aszcz dzisiaj. Sta艂o si臋 to w nocy z silnymi wiatrami wiej膮cymi z zatoki. Mieszkali艣my w domu ca艂y dzie艅, nie robi膮c wiele i czekaj膮c, a偶 minie dzie艅, jutro kolejna przygoda w autobusie do Dos Mares na zakupy spo偶ywcze.

A good day

Today was a beautiful day. We just spent the day enjoying it at the beach area, did a little clothes washing ad watched Duke win the ACC tournament championship. In the afternoon we talked with Karen and have the information now that she and her son will arrive on the 28th for the visit. It was a good day.

Dzisiaj by艂 pi臋kny dzie艅. Sp臋dzili艣my dzie艅, ciesz膮c si臋 nim na pla偶y, zrobili艣my ma艂膮 reklam臋 prania, obserwuj膮c, jak Duke wygrywa mistrzostwa turnieju ACC. To by艂 dobry dzie艅.

Yesterday and today.

Last night I was able to make to car rental using the old prices, which was great, because now we can go to Murcia for La Semana Santa(Easter). I have been told it is the best place to experience Easter.

We went to Trabuco for the Spanish class, this time good for me but maybe not so good for Joan because there was no one to work with her on her level and so she was with me. I talked with Angel at a higher level but tried to explain all to Joan.

At 21:00, Victor picked us up and we went for Chinese dinner with the other group from Los Alcazares.  About 10 people were there and I had the chane to speak a little in Spanish.

Today Carmelo came to visit for 2 hours, speaking in Spanish about different subjects. He also brought us a present, a bottle of wine from bodegas Juan Gil. It is another wine from the Murcia area.

Powiedziano mi, 偶e jest to najlepsze miejsce do do艣wiadczenia Wielkanocy.

Poszli艣my do Trabuco na lekcje hiszpa艅skiego, tym razem dla mnie dobre, ale mo偶e nie tak dobre dla Joan, poniewa偶 nie by艂o nikogo, z kim mog艂aby pracowa膰 na jej poziomie, wi臋c by艂a ze mn膮.

O 21:00 Victor podni贸s艂 nas i poszli艣my na chi艅sk膮 kolacj臋 z drug膮 grup膮 z Los Alcazares. By艂o tam oko艂o 10 os贸b i mia艂em okazj臋 m贸wi膰 troch臋 po hiszpa艅sku.

Przyni贸s艂 nam tak偶e prezent, butelk臋 wina z bodegas Juan Gil. To kolejne wino z okolic Murcji.

More wines.

I met with Pedro this morning at 9:00 and he gave me the name of 4 more local wines to try. I told him about my idea to take Joan's daughter and our grandson to visit one of the bodegas in Yecla when they are here. He told me there is a "Ruta de Vino"(Wine Route) we could sign-up for that takes you to several mini-visits of bodegas in one day. That might be good or maybe just 2 longer visits to the bodegas of the Casta帽o and Barra families. Yecla is a 1 1/2 drive north of here so we would have to leave about 9:00. I'm still waiting for details about when they will arrive, specifically and we are not sur about accommodations.

We will need a car next month to return to Alicante airport early in the morning for our return floght to Poland. Last month I received a notice from Rentalcar about renting another car and kept the offer. For 5 days it was 420PLN. Today, out of curiosity I went to their website to see about renting the same car for the same amount of days. I knew the price would be higher but I was a little shocked to see the actual charge...1128 PLN...almost 3 times higher. A car is the only way to get there so we will rent one the day before we need it to reduce the price. First, I will try and use the old advertisement they sent me last month to see if they accept it at the 420 PLN price. Probably not.

Opowiedzia艂em mu o moim pomy艣le zabrania c贸rki Joan i naszego wnuka, aby odwiedzili jedn膮 z bodegas w Yecli, kiedy tu s膮. Powiedzia艂 mi, 偶e istnieje „Ruta de Vino” (Szlak Wina), do kt贸rego mogliby艣my si臋 zapisa膰, i kt贸ry zabierze Ci臋 w kilka mini-wizyt bodegas w jeden dzie艅. To mo偶e by膰 dobre, a mo偶e tylko 2 d艂u偶sze wizyty w bodegas rodzin Casta帽o i Barra.

W zesz艂ym miesi膮cu otrzyma艂em zawiadomienie od Rentalcar o wynajmie innego samochodu i zachowaniu oferty. Przez 5 dni by艂o 420PLN. Wiedzia艂em, 偶e cena b臋dzie wy偶sza, ale by艂em troch臋 zszokowany widz膮c faktyczne obci膮偶enie ... 1128 z艂 ... prawie 3 razy wy偶sze. Samoch贸d to jedyny spos贸b, aby si臋 tam dosta膰, wi臋c wynajmiemy go dzie艅 wcze艣niej, aby go obni偶y膰. Prawdopodobnie nie.

Bodega Casta帽o

We have been trying wines from this region, like I wrote about in a previous blog. We have only tried wines from 2 bodegas, Casta帽o and Luz贸n. Casta帽o is our favorite so far.

The willpower, strength and determination of Ram贸n Casta帽o Santa have been necessary in his endevour to achieve the highest quality in his wines, elaborated with the indigenous grape variety, Monastrell.

The relationship of Ram贸n with wines dates back several generations, as both vine-grower and winemaker. In 1950 he had already built a new winery, bringing up to date the technical means and increasing the hectares of vineyards. But it was not until 1980 when he started bottling. At first, this approach was considered rather adventurous in the conservative wine world in Yecla, since Monastrell allowed a certain easy market sold in bulk. From the very first moment onwards the main goal has always been quality.

The incorporation of his three sons into the family company in the 80's brought in a new focus aimed to consolidate the national markets and seek the international expansion.
The Casta帽o family has always been considered a pioneer in the area, experimenting with the grape variety Monastrell to both create straight wines and blend it with other varieties, introducing the latest technology, not only in the vineyard but also in the winery, and implementing new quality systems that allow a more suitable winemaking.

One of their wines, Hecula, has won 2 awards for the best wines from this region. we purchased a bottle of it today.

Mamy tylko win z 2 bodegas, Castano i Lu偶on.

W 1950 r. Zbudowa艂 ju偶 now膮 winnic臋, aktualizuj膮c 艣rodki techniczne i zwi臋kszaj膮c hektary winnic. Ale dopiero w 1980 roku zacz膮艂 butelkowa膰. Od samego pocz膮tku g艂贸wnym celem zawsze by艂a jako艣膰.

W艂膮czenie jego trzech syn贸w do rodzinnej firmy w latach 80-tych przynios艂o nowy cel, zmierzaj膮cy do konsolidacji rynk贸w krajowych i poszukiwania ekspansji mi臋dzynarodowej.

Like a flower.

I feel like those orange flowers in front of our house. In the daytime when the sun is shining, almost every day, I'm alive, active, taking the rays into my body and seeing my skin turn darker. My energy level is high and I'm always looking for something to do whether it's a walk to the beach, center of town, go for coffee, study Spanish, anything but stay in the house. Like the flowers, when night approaches, I tend to shrivel, retreat into the house and think about the next day. Late evenings are good study times for me and that is how I usually end my day. During the day I find myself drinking more coffee than when we live in Poland, mainly because it usually means sitting at a caf茅 on the boardwalk, watching the sea and the people going by. We have our favorites now. Caf茅 Marazul has the best coffee and Caf茅 Iseo is where I go in the morning to find someone to speak in Spanish. Now I've added Jose Antonio Caf茅, where I meet with Pedro twice a week to speak in Spanish.

Our friend in Poland, Radek, called today to see how we are doing in Spain. He is going to Israel next month with his sister for little vacation and in April to Estonia and Russia with friends.

I learned an expression last night, "I can't cope(No doy abasto)". I could have used it yesterday when talking, in Spanish, about the bus schedule. At Caf茅 Iseo this morning I asked the waitress to correct a sentence I made using the expression, "I can't cope with the fact that I don't speak sufficient Spanish(No doy abasto con de hecho que no hablo suficiente en espa帽ol). She said it was better to say, "I can't cope with not speaking much Spanish(No doy abasto hablando muchas espa帽ol). Not exactly what I meant but close enough.

Czuj臋 si臋 jak te pomara艅czowe kwiaty przed naszym domem. W dzie艅, kiedy 艣wieci s艂o艅ce, prawie codziennie, jestem 偶ywy, aktywny, bior臋 promienie do mojego cia艂a i widz臋, jak moja sk贸ra staje si臋 ciemniejsza. Podobnie jak kwiaty, kiedy zbli偶a si臋 noc, skurcz臋 si臋, wycofam do domu i pomy艣l臋 o nast臋pnym dniu. W ci膮gu dnia pij臋 wi臋cej kawy ni偶 wtedy, gdy mieszkamy w Polsce, g艂贸wnie dlatego, 偶e zazwyczaj oznacza to siedzenie w kawiarni na deptaku, obserwowanie morza i ludzi. Mamy teraz swoich ulubionych. Kawiarnia Marazul ma najlepsz膮 kaw臋, a Caf茅 Iseo to miejsce, w kt贸rym jad臋 rano, aby znale藕膰 kogo艣, kto m贸wi po hiszpa艅sku. Teraz doda艂em Jose Antonio Caf茅, gdzie spotykam si臋 z Pedro dwa razy w tygodniu, aby m贸wi膰 po hiszpa艅sku.

Nasz przyjaciel w Polsce, Radek, zadzwoni艂 dzi艣, aby zobaczy膰, jak si臋 czujemy w Hiszpanii.

Nauczy艂em si臋 wyrazu wczorajszego wieczoru: „Nie mog臋 sobie poradzi膰 (No doy abasto)”. Mog艂em go u偶y膰 wczoraj, m贸wi膮c po hiszpa艅sku o rozk艂adzie jazdy autobus贸w. Dzi艣 rano w Caf茅 Iseo poprosi艂em kelnerk臋 o poprawienie zdania, kt贸re zrobi艂em, u偶ywaj膮c wyra偶enia: „Nie mog臋 poradzi膰 sobie z faktem, 偶e nie m贸wi臋 wystarczaj膮co dobrze po hiszpa艅sku (No doy abasto con de hecho que no hablo suficiente en espa帽ol) Powiedzia艂a, 偶e lepiej powiedzie膰: „Nie potrafi臋 sobie poradzi膰 z m贸wieniem po hiszpa艅sku (No doy abasto hablando muchas espa帽ol).

Bus schedule?

Yes, a bus...……………….. schedule? Well, not exactly a schedule that was met. I had to go to Dos Mares food shopping so that meant taking a local bus. Now, the schedule said there was one at 9:30, 10:30 and 11:30. I was ready for the bus at 9:30 but it didn't arrive until 10:00. I asked the driver if he was going to Dos Mares and he said NO, the next one would. The next one, 10:30:, arrived at 11:00 and he said NO. he was not going to Dos Mares. I called the tourist information office to see what was going on but they could not get a phone answered at the bus company. Dos Mares is 3 km away from our house. There is another store, Mercado, about 1 1/2 km away. To get to Mercado is a walk, there and back, with bags full of groceries. I thought taking the bus to Dos Mares would be better.

I tried one more time, at 14:30, for the bus and this time the driver said YES. The cost was 1Euro 25 cents. The problem was the return bus was at 15:20 so it only gave me 50 minutes to shop and on top of that, the bus going there didn't arrive on time and I only had 25 minutes to do all the shopping. I ran around the store quickly, bought almost everything and was back at the bus stop at 15:20. I waited and waited. Finally I saw the bus, the man inside waved and kept driving. He didn't stop. The next bus would be at 18:30. 3 hours later. I had no alternative but to put the bags on my shoulders and make the 3 km walk back to our house. It was along, very long, walk with the bags hanging from my shoulders. Maybe I should have just taken Joan and rolled her up to Mercado but they don't have everything.

Tak, autobus ... .................. .. harmonogram? C贸偶, nie do ko艅ca harmonogram, kt贸ry zosta艂 spe艂niony. Musia艂em i艣膰 na zakupy spo偶ywcze Dos Mares, wi臋c oznacza艂o to wzi臋cie lokalnego autobusu. Teraz harmonogram powiedzia艂, 偶e by艂 jeden o 9:30, 10:30 i 11:30. Zapyta艂em kierowc臋, czy jedzie do Dos Mares, a on odpowiedzia艂 "NIE", nast臋pny b臋dzie. Nast臋pny, 10:30: przyby艂 o 11:00 i powiedzia艂 NIE. nie zamierza艂 i艣膰 do Dos Mares. My艣la艂em, 偶e zabranie autobusu do Dos Mares by艂oby lepsze.

Koszt wynosi艂 1Euro 25 cent贸w. Czeka艂em i czeka艂em. W ko艅cu zobaczy艂em autobus, cz艂owiek w 艣rodku machn膮艂 i kontynuowa艂 jazd臋. Nie zatrzyma艂 si臋. Nast臋pny autobus b臋dzie o 18:30. 3 godziny p贸藕niej. 3 km do naszego domu. By艂o to bardzo d艂ugie, spacer z torebkami zwisaj膮cymi mi z ramion.

Carnival Parade

I started the day with two pictures of some pretty orange flowers growing in front of our place and then made oatmeal for breakfast. Taking the first spoonful of oatmeal to eat we discovered the milk was sour even though the expiration date is a week from today. We didn't have anything else in the house for breakfast so we went to the caf茅 for coffee and tostadas with tomatoes, a popular breakfast.
Even at 10:00 the beach area was fairly full of people arrived and waiting for the parade in the afternoon.

Carmen and Inez stopped by for a little visit about 13:30. Carmen said she and her husband were working in Alicante for a month and didn't have much time on the weekend to visit but when the month was over we would get together.

About 16:30 Joan and I went to the center of town where the parade was to be held. Different groups of people from all over were already there in their beautiful costumes and I ended up taking about 170 pictures of them before the parade started and during the parade.

Joan had a good seat at the midpoint of the parade and I had moved around a little taking the pictures. I didn't realize we were right across from the huge speakers, only that the music was very loud. Each group danced their way down the parade street to the music and the parade lasted for 2 hours or more. After 1 1/2 hours Joan had seen enough and heard enough loud music so we started back home via the beach area.

However, at the beach area there were still more groups in costume lined up and waiting their turn to enter the parade. I finally walked up to one of the girls and asked her if I could have a picture taken with her. She agreed.

Zacz膮艂em dzie艅 od zdj臋cia dw贸ch pi臋knych pomara艅czowych kwiat贸w rosn膮cych przed naszym miejscem, a nast臋pnie zrobi艂em owsiank臋 na 艣niadanie. Bior膮c pierwsz膮 艂y偶k臋 p艂atk贸w owsianych, odkryli艣my, 偶e mleko jest kwa艣ne, mimo 偶e data wyga艣ni臋cia to tydzie艅 od dzisiaj. Nie mieli艣my nic wi臋cej w domu na 艣niadanie, wi臋c poszli艣my do kawiarni na kaw臋 i tostadas z pomidorami, popularne 艣niadanie.

O 16:30 Joan i ja pojechali艣my do centrum miasta, gdzie mia艂a si臋 odby膰 parada. R贸偶ne grupy ludzi z ca艂ego 艣wiata ju偶 tam by艂y w swoich pi臋knych strojach, a ja zrobi艂em z nich oko艂o 170 zdj臋膰 przed rozpocz臋ciem parady i parady.

Joan mia艂a dobre miejsce w 艣rodkowej cz臋艣ci parady, a ja przeprowadzi艂em si臋 troch臋 po zrobieniu zdj臋膰. Nie zdawa艂em sobie sprawy, 偶e jeste艣my tu偶 przed ogromnymi g艂o艣nikami, tyle tylko, 偶e muzyka by艂a bardzo g艂o艣na.

Jednak na pla偶y by艂o jeszcze wi臋cej grup w stroju w kolejce i czekaj膮cych na swoj膮 kolej, aby wej艣膰 na parad臋. W ko艅cu podszed艂em do jednej z dziewcz膮t i spyta艂em j膮, czy mog臋 zrobi膰 zdj臋cie z ni膮. Zgodzi艂a si臋.

Wine

Yesterday I sent a message to our Spanish group from last year that we no longer had a car so it wouldn't be possible to join them for the Chinese dinner at 21:00. A few hours later, Victor,  one of the group, wrote to me and said he would pick us up and take us with him to the dinner. What a nice surprise. So, we met the other group at 19:00 in Hotel Trabuco and at 20:50 Victor arrived to pick us up.

During the dinner conversations I asked why it was so hard to buy wines from Murcia here, locally. Victor said it was because major stores buy the most well known wines from regions like Rioja or Rivera. Pedro, my conversation partner now on Tuesday and Thursday used to work in wine making in two of the regions of Murcia, Jumilla and Yecla and told me the same thing. Victor said he thought that the store Lidl sold some of the local wines and they had a sale on today. The Lidl store is about 1 km from where we live.

About 12:30, Joan got into her wheel chair and we went for a walk to Lidle to check out the wine situation. We did find 3 different types of wine, 1 from the Bodegas Casta帽o in Yecla (Monastrell 2017) and 2 from Bodegas Luz贸n S.I.(Finca Luz贸n Crianza 2015 and  Finca Luz贸n). We tasted all 3 and our favorite was from Bodegas Casta帽o. Cost=4.49 Euro($5)

Wczoraj wys艂a艂em wiadomo艣膰 do naszej hiszpa艅skiej grupy z zesz艂ego roku, 偶e nie mamy ju偶 samochodu, wi臋c nie by艂oby mo偶liwe do艂膮czenie do chi艅skiej kolacji o 21:00. Spotkali艣my si臋 wi臋c z drug膮 grup膮 o 19:00 w Hotelu Trabuco io 20:50 Victor przyszed艂 po nas.

Podczas rozm贸w o kolacj臋 zapyta艂em, dlaczego tak trudno kupi膰 tu wina z Murcji. Pedro, m贸j rozm贸wczyni, we wtorek i czwartek pracowa艂 w winiarstwie w dw贸ch regionach Murcji, Jumilla i Yecla i powiedzia艂 mi to samo. Victor powiedzia艂, 偶e my艣la艂, 偶e sklep Lidl sprzeda艂 niekt贸re z lokalnych win i mieli dzisiaj na sprzeda偶. Sklep Lidl znajduje si臋 oko艂o 1 km od miejsca, w kt贸rym mieszkamy.

Oko艂o 12:30 Joan wsiad艂a na w贸zku inwalidzkim i poszli艣my na spacer do Lidle, aby sprawdzi膰 sytuacj臋 z winem. Znale藕li艣my 3 r贸偶ne rodzaje wina, 1 z Bodegas Casta帽o w Yecla (Monastrell 2017) i 2 z Bodegas Luz贸n S.I. (Finca Luz贸n Crianza 2015 i Finca Luz贸n). Smakowali艣my wszystkie 3 i nasz ulubiony by艂 z Bodegas Casta帽o. Koszt = 4,49 Euro (5 USD)

Being helpful.

This morning I sat drinking a cup of coffee and watched a big, man-driven machine called a front -end loader, raking the sand on the beach in front of me. When we lived in the U.P. of Michigan I
was familiar with this machine but then it was used to remove enormous amounts of snow from roads or driveways. This was the first time I've seen it used like this.  It was like watching a Japanese making designs in a sand garden. Probably it is in preparation for Carnival weekend here and the influx of people.

Yesterday, at Enrique's barber shop, he told me his niece was taking an examination in English in May and would very much like to have a native speaker to talk with. I said I would be happy to do it while we are here. His niece just happened to be there getting her hair washed by her mother, Enrique's sister, who also works there. When I was almost done with my haircut, Enrique told me to have my hair washed and I sat down next to his niece. I told her who I was and that I would be happy to speak English with her when she had time. Her name is Alicia. She is married, with 3 young children, two in day care. She said her husband is also taking the test and would also like to talk with an English speaker. I gave her my phone number and told her to call me when she figured out when they had time to meet. They live close to our house.

Carnival starts today and tonight there will be music and parties everywhere. Already last night, at 1:30, outside you could hear the music and singing of one band in the distant entertainment area. Fortunately, our flat is located so it is not effected by the sound. It is very quiet here at night with hardly ever a car going by on the street.

I have been staying up until 2:00 in the morning studying, answering emails or listening to Spanish lessons almost every night. It is the best time for me because I know Joan is safe and sleeping in the next room. I get up at 8:00 and get to the caf茅 most days by 8:30 to find someone to speak with if I can.  If not, I just slowly drink a cup of coffee, watch the sun rise into the sky, listen to the birds and return home to wait for Joan to wakeup.  Today, about 16:30, I will walk the 2 kilometers to the place where I can pick up the wheel chair I bought and then push it back home.

Tego ranka siedzia艂em przy kawie i obserwowa艂em du偶膮, sterowan膮 przez cz艂owieka maszyn臋, zwan膮 艂adowaczem czo艂owym, kt贸ra grabi艂a piasek na pla偶y przede mn膮. Kiedy mieszkali艣my w U.P. z Michigan I zna艂 t臋 maszyn臋, ale potem by艂 u偶ywany do usuwania ogromnych ilo艣ci 艣niegu z dr贸g lub podjazd贸w. To by艂 pierwszy raz, kiedy widzia艂em, jak by艂 u偶ywany w ten spos贸b. To by艂o jak ogl膮danie japo艅skiego projektanta w piaskownym ogrodzie.

Powiedzia艂em, 偶e ch臋tnie to zrobi臋, gdy b臋dziemy tutaj. Jego siostrzenica akurat by艂a tam, gdy jej w艂osy sp艂ukiwa艂a matka, siostra Enrique, kt贸ra r贸wnie偶 tam pracuje. Powiedzia艂em jej, kim jestem i 偶e z przyjemno艣ci膮 porozmawiam z ni膮 po angielsku, kiedy b臋dzie mia艂a czas. Nazywa si臋 Alicia. Jest m臋偶atk膮, ma 3 ma艂e dzieci, dwie w ci膮gu dnia. Powiedzia艂a, 偶e jej m膮偶 r贸wnie偶 bierze udzia艂 w te艣cie i chcia艂by tak偶e porozmawia膰 z angielskim m贸wc膮. Poda艂em jej numer telefonu i powiedzia艂em, 偶eby do mnie zadzwoni艂a, kiedy zorientowa艂a si臋, kiedy maj膮 czas na spotkanie. 呕yj膮 blisko naszego domu.

Karnawa艂 zaczyna si臋 dzisiaj i dzi艣 wieczorem b臋dzie muzyka i imprezy na ca艂ym 艣wiecie. Ju偶 wczoraj wieczorem o 1:30 na zewn膮trz s艂ycha膰 by艂o muzyk臋 i 艣piew jednego zespo艂u w odleg艂ym centrum rozrywki.

Wstaj臋 o 8:00 i przychodz臋 do kawiarni przez wi臋kszo艣膰 dni o 8:30, aby znale藕膰 kogo艣, z kim mog臋 porozmawia膰, je艣li mog臋. Dzi艣 oko艂o 16:30 id臋 2 kilometry do miejsca, w kt贸rym mog臋 odebra膰 zakupione przeze mnie krzes艂o, a nast臋pnie wypchn膮膰 je z powrotem do domu.

Visitors

At 8:30 I met with Pedro in San Anto帽io's caf茅 for an hour of Spanish conversation and the went to take Joan to the nurse to have her ear cleared of wax. Fortinately there was no one waiting in front of us and we went right in. The nurse took a tube of warm water and proceeded to wash the wax out of her ear. Within a minute it was all gone and once again she could hear out of both ears. What a relief it was for her...and me.

I also received a call that the wheel chair had arrived again with the correct wheels on it and I could pick it up. I told them I would be there tomorrow at 17:00 to get it.

Our friend Mary notified us she would be close to our place with her friends and we arranged to meet them in our house about 16:00.  We talked for about 2 hours and then Joan and I had to meet with 2 other people for dinner. It was an arrangement we made yesterday before we knew Mary's plan for today. They decided they would leave San  Javier on Saturday, fly to Mallorca for 3 days, return to Alicante, rent a car and drive to Barcelona. I suggested they should stop in Valencia to see the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias - a complex in Valencia, Spain, also called something  "future" district.

O 8:30 spotka艂em si臋 z Pedro w kawiarni San Anto帽io przez godzin臋 hiszpa艅skiej rozmowy i poszed艂em zabra膰 Joan do piel臋gniarki, aby jej ucho by艂o oczyszczone z wosku. Na szcz臋艣cie nikt przed nami nie czeka艂 i weszli艣my prosto. Piel臋gniarka wzi臋艂a rurk臋 z ciep艂膮 wod膮 i wyj臋艂a z ucha wosk. W ci膮gu minuty wszystko znikn臋艂o i zn贸w us艂ysza艂a z obu uszu. Jaka ulga dla niej ... i dla mnie.

Otrzyma艂em r贸wnie偶 telefon, 偶e w贸zek zn贸w przyjecha艂 z odpowiednimi ko艂ami i mog艂em go podnie艣膰. Powiedzia艂em im, 偶e b臋d臋 tam jutro o 17:00, aby go zdoby膰.

Nasza przyjaci贸艂ka Mary powiadomi艂a nas, 偶e b臋dzie blisko naszego miejsca z przyjaci贸艂mi i um贸wili艣my si臋 z nimi w naszym domu oko艂o godziny 16:00. Rozmawiali艣my przez oko艂o 2 godziny, a potem Joan i ja musieli艣my spotka膰 si臋 z 2 innymi osobami na kolacj臋. To by艂o porozumienie, kt贸re zrobili艣my wczoraj, zanim poznali艣my plan Maryi na dzisiaj. Postanowili oni opu艣ci膰 San Javier w sobot臋, lec膮 na Majork臋 na 3 dni, wracaj膮 do Alicante, wynajmuj膮 samoch贸d i je偶d偶膮 do Barcelony.

Cloudy.

The day, cloudy, started out great. I have a haircut appointment with Enrique but wasn't sure whether is was today or tomorrow. I called his shop and in Spanish I said, " My name is David Piekarczyk and I have an appointment with Enrique but I don't know if it is today or tomorrow at 11:00. Can you help me?" The lady said, "Just a moment" and came back to tell me it was tomorrow. I thanked her and ended the call. I was so happy that I could say the whole thing in Spanish and be understood. It made me feel good.

Joan's ear is still blocked with wax so tomorrow we will revisit the nurse at 10:00. This time I hope she will clear up the problem. I also hope it doesn't take long to get in to see her so I am not late for my hair appointment.

This weekend is Carnival in Ribera. All weekend there will be various activities going on and Sunday is the big parade through the streets. I'll take pictures, of course.

Pani powiedzia艂a: "Chwileczk臋" i wr贸ci艂a, 偶eby mi powiedzie膰, 偶e to jutro. Podzi臋kowa艂em jej i zako艅czy艂em rozmow臋. By艂em tak szcz臋艣liwy, 偶e mog艂em powiedzie膰 wszystko po hiszpa艅sku i zrozumie膰. Sprawi艂o, 偶e poczu艂em si臋 dobrze.

Uszy Joanny wci膮偶 s膮 zablokowane woskiem, wi臋c jutro odwiedzimy piel臋gniark臋 o 10:00. Mam nadziej臋, 偶e tym razem rozwi膮偶e ten problem. Mam te偶 nadziej臋, 偶e nie zajmie to du偶o czasu, aby si臋 z ni膮 zobaczy膰, wi臋c nie sp贸藕ni艂em si臋 na spotkanie z w艂osami.

W ten weekend jest Carnival in Ribera. Przez ca艂y weekend odbywaj膮 si臋 r贸偶ne zaj臋cia, a niedziela to wielka parada ulicami. Oczywi艣cie zrobi臋 zdj臋cia.

Spanish

I had a  nice meeting this morning with Pedro and we talked Spanish/English for 1 1/2 hours at Jose Antonios's caf茅.

Mary came over at 10:00 and we went to the bank so I could exchange PLN for Euro's, walked around outside for a little while and then drove to La Manga for Lunch at El Pez Rojo. We've been there before so I knew Mary would like it. Outside on the patio it has a good view of the bay. Even with it being a little windy it was nice sitting outside in the sun and eating. Joan had prawns(very messy), Mary had sea bass and I, calamari. Back home by 17:00, Mary went home to get ready for her 2 friends to arrive tomorrow.

Mary przyjecha艂a o dziesi膮tej i poszli艣my do banku, 偶eby wymieni膰 PLN na Euro, na chwil臋 wyszed艂em na zewn膮trz, a potem pojecha艂em do La Manga na lunch do El Pez Rojo. Byli艣my tam wcze艣niej, wi臋c wiedzia艂em, 偶e Mary b臋dzie to lubi艂a. Joan mia艂a krewetki (bardzo niechlujnie), Mary mia艂a morskiego bas i ja, kalmary. Po powrocie do domu przed 17:00 Mary posz艂a do domu, aby przygotowa膰 si臋 na przyj臋cie 2 znajomych, kt贸rzy przyjad膮 jutro.

Gone wrong.

Today Joan woke up at 7:30 to meet at 8:30 with the doctor about her hearing problem. We were the first appointment, on time, and went right in. The doctor confirmed Joan had wax buildup in her left ear but said the nurse had to be the one to clean it out. She did not do that. I immediately that we would have to wait a few days for an appointment and happily surprised when she said to wait a minute while she talked to the nurse in the next room. She came back in a few minutes and said the nurse would see Joan at 10:15. We went home, had breakfast and returned at 10:15.

There were 2 people ahead of us waiting so we got into the nurses office about 10:35. The nurse asked how long Joan had used the ear drops to clean out the wax and I said 3 days. She said it had to be used for 5 days. Since it was only used for 3 days she said to go back home, use the drops for 2 more days and then come back. So, in the end, Joan's hearing is still blocked for now.

Later, in the afternoon, I went with Mary to pickup the wheel chair and, again, another surprise. It was the correct brand, right model, but, alas, it had the large wheels on it. I specifically ordered the smaller wheels and didn't accept the chair. The salesperson checked her order and said she did order small wheels so it was the factories fault in shipment. She said they would return the chair and get the one I wanted and would have it for me by next week.

Dzi艣 Joan obudzi艂a si臋 o 7:30, aby spotka膰 si臋 z lekarzem o 8:30 o problemie ze s艂uchem. Byli艣my pierwszym spotkaniem, na czas, i weszli艣my od razu. Wr贸ci艂a po kilku minutach i powiedzia艂a, 偶e piel臋gniarka zobaczy Joan o 10:15. Poszli艣my do domu, zjedli艣my 艣niadanie i wr贸cili艣my o 10:15.

Przed nami czeka艂y 2 osoby, wi臋c dostali艣my si臋 do biura piel臋gniarek o 10:35. Piel臋gniarka zapyta艂a, jak d艂ugo Joan u偶ywa艂a kropli do uszu, aby oczy艣ci膰 wosk i powiedzia艂em 3 dni. Powiedzia艂a, 偶e musia艂a by膰 u偶ywana przez 5 dni. Poniewa偶 by艂a u偶ywana tylko przez 3 dni, powiedzia艂a, 偶e powinna wr贸ci膰 do domu, u偶ywa膰 kropli przez kolejne 2 dni, a nast臋pnie wr贸ci膰.

P贸藕niej, po po艂udniu, poszed艂em z Mary, 偶eby podnie艣膰 w贸zek inwalidzki i znowu kolejn膮 niespodziank臋. To by艂a w艂a艣ciwa marka, w艂a艣ciwy model, ale, niestety, mia艂a na niej du偶e ko艂a. Specjalnie zam贸wi艂em mniejsze ko艂a i nie zaakceptowa艂em krzes艂a. Sprzedawczyni sprawdzi艂a zam贸wienie i powiedzia艂a, 偶e zam贸wi艂a ma艂e k贸艂ka, wi臋c to by艂a wina fabryczna w przesy艂ce. Powiedzia艂a, 偶e zwr贸c膮 krzes艂o i dostan膮 ten, kt贸ry chcia艂em, i b臋d臋 go mie膰 w przysz艂ym tygodniu.

Pilar de Horrada

After a morning of coffee and tostadas, Mary arrived and we started a journey east of Ribera to visit small cities connected along the way. First Lo Pagan, then San Pedro del Pintar and eventually ending up in Pilar de Horrada. We parked the car by the old watch tower and went for a long walk along the boardwalk by the sea.

It was another magnificent day for being outside, beautiful for walking or pushing Joan in the wheel chair. She could have walked also but the distance was too far for her and the chair made it easier for all of us. Earlier I walked with her to the beach and then around town a little to keep her exercised.

There were many people already outside, cafes filled and people on the beach. A few were swimming and more than a few on the single sailboats. I, of course, took pictures.

By the time we turned around we were hungry so we found an empty table in a cafe and stopped for lunch. Joan had a chicken salad, Mary a tuna salad and I, my favorite, calamari andaluza.

We talked with Joan's daughter and she and the grandson, Joe,will be flying into Barcelona on the 24th, staying 1 day and then taking a train to Alicante where they will rent a car to drive to us. They will stay until April 6th.

Po porannej kawie i tostadas przyjecha艂a Mary, a my ruszyli艣my w podr贸偶 na wsch贸d od Ribera, by odwiedzi膰 ma艂e miasta po艂膮czone drog膮. Najpierw Lo Pagan, potem San Pedro del Pintar, a ostatecznie w Pilar de Horrada. Zaparkowali艣my samoch贸d przy starej wie偶y stra偶niczej i poszli艣my na d艂ugi spacer wzd艂u偶 promenady nad morzem.

By艂o ju偶 du偶o ludzi na zewn膮trz, kafejki wype艂nione i ludzie na pla偶y. Kilka p艂ywa艂o, a wi臋cej ni偶 kilka pojedynczych 偶agl贸wek. Ja, oczywi艣cie, robi艂em zdj臋cia.

Zanim si臋 odwr贸cili艣my, byli艣my g艂odni, wi臋c znale藕li艣my pusty stolik w kawiarni i zatrzymali艣my si臋 na lunch. Joan mia艂a sa艂atk臋 z kurczaka, Mary sa艂atk臋 z tu艅czyka i ja, moja ulubiona, kalmary andaluza.

Rozmawiali艣my z c贸rk膮 Joanny, a ona wraz z wnukiem, Joe, wylec膮 do Barcelony 24 maja, zatrzymaj膮 si臋 na 1 dzie艅, a nast臋pnie jad膮 poci膮giem do Alicante, gdzie wynajmuj膮 samoch贸d, by do nas dojecha膰. Pozostan膮 do 6 kwietnia.

Aguilas

Last night at 19:00 we, Joan, Mary and I, went to Hotel Trabuco for the Spanish club meeting. We all met in a different room, smaller, and it was a bit more noisier and harder to hear each other. Joan and Mary sat at a table with Pedro to help them and I was at a table with Angel. the man from last week. My digital recorder decided not to record but, fortunately, Angel showed me how to use my phone to record our meeting so I can listen to it again and pick out the words I didn't know. It will have a lot of background noise so I will have to really listen well to it.

Today, another beautiful day, the three of us took a 1 hour trip to Aguilas. It's a city west of Ribera where, like Ribera, it is Carnival time. The internet said today is only the selection of the Queen so we were not expecting too much but were surprised. The main streets were filled with people in all types of different costumes, the restaurants were packed with people and music was everywhere. We parked the van at the marina and started walking in search of a place to have lunch. It wasn't easy to find. Most of them had their places already reserved and we had to walk a good distance until we found the Sam Sam Bar-Cafeteria. Joan and Mary had salads and I had a salmon sandwich.

Sitting next to us were 2 young Spanish girls and one of them, in English, asked if Joan had a husband for her hair. I didn't understand what she meant until I figured out she meant a rubber band for her hair. She just didn't know the correct word in English. We all laughed but I said we didn't have one.

When we were done we walked back toward the van taking pictures of the colorfully dressed people.

Back home at 18:00, Mary went home and Joan and I had dinner.

Ostatniej nocy o 19:00 my, Joan, Mary i ja, udali艣my si臋 do hotelu Trabuco na hiszpa艅skie spotkanie klubowe. Wszyscy spotkali艣my si臋 w innym pokoju, mniejszym, i by艂o troch臋 g艂o艣niej i trudniej si臋 by艂o us艂ysze膰. Joan i Mary siedzieli przy stole z Pedro, aby im pom贸c, a ja siedzia艂em przy stole z Angelem. m臋偶czyzna z zesz艂ego tygodnia. Moja cyfrowa nagrywarka postanowi艂a nie nagrywa膰, ale na szcz臋艣cie Angel pokaza艂 mi, jak u偶ywa膰 mojego telefonu, aby nagra膰 nasze spotkanie, aby m贸c go ponownie s艂ucha膰 i wybiera膰 s艂owa, kt贸rych nie zna艂em. B臋dzie mia艂 du偶o szumu w tle, wi臋c b臋d臋 musia艂 go dobrze s艂ucha膰.

Dzi艣 kolejny pi臋kny dzie艅, nasza tr贸jka odby艂a 1-godzinn膮 podr贸偶 do Aguilas. Internet powiedzia艂, 偶e dzisiaj jest tylko wyb贸r kr贸lowej, wi臋c nie spodziewali艣my si臋 zbyt wiele, ale byli艣my zaskoczeni. G艂贸wne ulice wype艂nione by艂y lud藕mi w r贸偶nego rodzaju strojach, restauracje by艂y pe艂ne ludzi, a muzyka by艂a wsz臋dzie. Zaparkowali艣my furgonetk臋 w marinie i ruszyli艣my w poszukiwaniu miejsca na lunch. Nie by艂o 艂atwo znale藕膰. Wi臋kszo艣膰 z nich mia艂a ju偶 zarezerwowane miejsca i musieli艣my i艣膰 do艣膰 daleko, dop贸ki nie znale藕li艣my baru Sam Samad-Cafe. Joan i Mary mieli sa艂atki, a ja kanapk臋 z 艂ososiem.

Nie rozumia艂em, co mia艂a na my艣li, dop贸ki nie zrozumia艂em, 偶e ma na my艣li gumk臋 do w艂os贸w.

Kiedy sko艅czyli艣my, wr贸cili艣my do furgonetki, robi膮c zdj臋cia kolorowo ubranych ludzi.

Po powrocie do domu o 18:00 Mary posz艂a do domu, a Joan i ja jedli艣my obiad.

Can't hear?

Joan has been complaining about not being able to hear in her left ear for a few days. I went to the farmacia to get some drops to dissolve wax in her ear but that didn't work. Being the stubborn, but lovely person she is, she refused seeing a doctor to have her ear cleaned out. Finally, after having to repeat everything I said more loudly, this morning while she was sleeping I went to the medical center and made an appointment for Monday at 8:35. She will be thrilled when I tell her the news when she wakes up. I think I will wait until breakfast is over. When she is hearing properly again I know she will be happy.

Lady luck smiled on me today at my morning cafe coffee. Carlos was sitting there and I had the opportunity to speak Spanish with him. I told him about our guest from the U.S., our trips to Murcia, Cartegna and the BIG guns. We talked also about the different attitudes between the people of the north of Spain and the south. He said southern Spaniards had better attitudes and he thought it was because of the climate being better.

10:02 KO, Joan is awake, I told her about the doctor appointment and she is fine with it. It was right after she told me she couldn't hear me when I said something. Good timing.

Tonight Mary will join us at Hotel Trabuco for the Spanish club and at 21:00 we will go to have Chinese dinner with the other group.
B臋dzie zachwycona, gdy powiem jej, kiedy si臋 obudzi. Chyba poczekam do sko艅czenia 艣niadania. Kiedy znowu us艂yszy prawid艂owo, wiem, 偶e b臋dzie szcz臋艣liwa.

Lady Powertanie u艣miechn臋艂a si臋 do mnie dzisiaj na mojej porannej kawie w kawiarni. Carlos siedzia艂 tam i mia艂em okazj臋 rozmawia膰 z nim po hiszpa艅sku. Opowiedzia艂em mu o naszym go艣ciu ze Stan贸w Zjednoczonych, naszych wycieczkach do Murcji, Cartegny i pistolet贸w BIG. Powiedzia艂, 偶e po艂udniowi Hiszpanie maj膮 lepsze nastawienie i pomy艣la艂, 偶e to dzi臋ki lepszemu klimatowi.
