Jerez & Rota

Joan is well enough to travel so we headed up route A7 to A381 that took us through some lovely sunflower covered fields and numerous wind generator farms. Jerez is close to Rota and I did spend some time there in my youth but I wanted to show Joan the town of Rota and where I spent two years of my early life.

Jerez de la  Frontera is a municipality in the province of Cadiz in southwestern Spain situated midway between the sea and the mountains. As of 2013, the city, the largest in the province, had 215,180 inhabitants; it is the fifth largest in Andalusia. It has become the transportation and communications hub of the province and, in terms of land area, the largest municipality in the province, and its sprawling outlying areas are a fertile zone for agriculture. There are also many cattle ranches and horse-breeding operations, as well as a world-renowned wine industry.

Rota, Spain

Joan has a cold and couldn't accompany me for my return trip to Rota so I went alone. As I approached the base it became evident it was a military zone because of the double barbed wire fence that completely surrounds it and the patrol road inside of it. The road to Rota, the town, goes completely around it and you can only get to the town on this road so you approach it from the west.
It was nothing like I remember it. The only thing that was the same is the old church and the palace on the western hill.  Nothing else was the same. When I was there and went through the security gates it was a little walk down the  road before you got 4to the town, now the town comes right up to the gate with new buildings everywhere. Some of the streets are still only big enough for one car but lots of color has been added with new buildings and not everything is whitewashed like before. The beach is still not too occupied with visitors but there are any, many new hotels and apartment complexes.  Also, when I was there, it was named U.S. Naval Station-Rota and flew an American flag.  Now it's just Naval Base-Rota andm fly's a Spanish flag.
I know that things have to change but it would be nice to have some things stay the same as they were.

Looking back now I see that I waisted a great opportunity to learn about a new culture and take advantage of the two years I lived in Spain.
Joan jest przezi臋biona i nie mog艂a mi towarzyszy膰 w mojej „drodze wspomnie艅” do Rota, wi臋c poszed艂em sam. Gdy zbli偶y艂em si臋 do bazy sta艂o si臋 jasne, 偶e to strefa wojskowa, ze wzgl臋du na podw贸jny drut kolczasty, kt贸rym jest  ca艂kowicie otoczona i drogom patrolowym wewn膮trz niej.

Kiedy tam by艂em kilkadziesi膮t lat temu, po przej艣ciu przez bramki bezpiecze艅stwa, ukazywa艂a si臋 ma艂a droga prowadz膮ca w d贸艂, kt贸r膮 mo偶na by艂o si臋 przespacerowa膰, zanim dosta艂e艣 si臋 do miasta, a teraz to miasto si臋gaa偶 do bram bazy z nowymi budynkamidooko艂a. Kiedy by艂em w tym miejscu,  by艂o ono nazywane US Naval Station-Rota i powiewa艂a nad nim ameryka艅ska flaga. Teraz to tylko Naval Base-Rota i hiszpa艅ska flaga.

Wiem, 偶e zmiany musz膮 nast臋powa膰, ale by艂oby mi艂o, aby niekt贸re rzeczy pozosta艂y takie same, jak poprzednio.
Powracaj膮c w przesz艂o艣膰 widz臋, 偶e zmarnowa艂em 艣wietn膮 okazj臋, aby dowiedzie膰 si臋 czego艣 o nowej kulturze i skorzysta膰 z dw贸ch lat zamieszkiwania w Hiszpanii.

Malaga

Our first Gazpacho was had /this afternoon in Malaga.  We decided to have a restful day and only go to Malaga an hours drive away. We went to a restaurant we were at last time and we both had gazpacho and calamares.  The main walkway is now covered with a long sunscreen to make it seem cooler to tourists and it works pretty well. When we were done we went to the other side of the street and had coffee con leche(coffee with cream) and ice cream.  From there we took a leisurely drive back to Estepona.

I am absolutely amazed at the changes that have taken place in the last 50 years in this area. I shouldn't be because that is a long time but now there are so many hotels and apartment complexes on hilltops everywhere. With the financial crisis, however, housing costs are way down and many are for sale. I should have bought a place here 50 years ago when I was young.

Nasz pierwszy Gazpacho zosta艂a mia艂 / dzi艣 po po艂udniu w Maladze. My zdecydowali艣my si臋 na dzie艅 spokojny i tylko i艣膰 do Malagi godziny jazdy od hotelu. Poszli艣my do restauracji, byli艣my w ostatnim czasie i oboje mieli艣my gazpacho i calamares.G艂贸wnym chodnik jest teraz pokryty d艂ugim ochrony przeciws艂onecznej, aby to wydaje cooler dla turyst贸w i to dzia艂a ca艂kiem dobrze. Kiedy sko艅czyli艣my poszli艣my na drug膮 stron臋 ulicy i mieli艣my kaw臋 z mlekiem (kawa ze 艣mietan膮) i lody. Stamt膮d pojechali艣my spokojnie ty艂u dysku do Estepona.

Jestem absolutnie zaskoczeni zmianami, kt贸re mia艂y miejsce w ci膮gu ostatnich 50 lat w tej dziedzinie. Powinny Kupi艂em tu miejsce 50 lat temu, kiedy by艂em m艂ody.

Sevilla, Spain

A nice drive through some beautiful country took us to the town of Sevilla where we spent the day visiting only two historical buildings, the cathedral and the Alcazar. It didn't prevent me from taking over 200 pictures that you can see in the slideshow.  It would take too long to name every picture so I named the important ones.
The cathedral I definitely remember but not the Alcazar, maybe I didn't even see it. It is an amazing place but after seeing the Alhambra twice in Granada, the Alcazar has to come in second.

The  Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Sea, better known as Sevilla Cathedral, is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Sevilla. It is the largest Gothic cathedral and the third largest church in the world. It was registered in 1987 by UNESCO as a World Heritage site, along with the Alcazar. After its completion in the early 16th century, the Seville Cathedral supplanted Hagia Sophia as the largest cathedral in the world, a title the Byzantine church had held for nearly a thousand years. The cathedral is also the burial site of Christopher Columbus.

We spent about two and a half hours there.  Of course, now they charge to get in...8.75 Euro each. However, if you've travelled far to get to Sevilla, it's not  something to miss seeing.

The Alcazar of Seville is a royal palace originally a Moorish fort. It is the oldest royal palace still in use in Europe.

The Almohades were the first to build a palace, which was called Al-Muwarak, on the site of the modern day Alc谩zar. The palace is one of the best remaining examples of mudejar architecture. Subsequent monarchs have added their own additions to the Alc谩zar. The upper levels of the Alc谩zar are still used by the royal family as the official Seville residence.

艁adna droga przez  pi臋kny kraj doprowadzi艂a nas do Sewilli, gdzie sp臋dzili艣my dzie艅 na zwiedzaniu tylko dw贸ch zabytkowych budynk贸w, katedry i Alcazar. Ten fakt nie przeszkodzi艂 mi w zrobieniu 200 zdj臋膰, kt贸re mo偶na zobaczy膰 w pokazie slajd贸w. Podpisywanie ka偶dego zdj臋cia zabra艂oby zbyt du偶o czasu, wi臋c podpisa艂em te najbardziej istotne.

Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Sea, lepiej znana jako katedra w Sewilli, to katolicka katedra w Sewilli.

Sp臋dzili艣my tam oko艂o dw贸ch i p贸艂 godziny. Oczywi艣cie, teraz aby tam si臋 dosta膰 pobierana jest op艂ata... 8,75 euro za ka偶d膮 osob臋. Jednak, je艣li ju偶 jechali艣my tak daleko, aby dosta膰 si臋 do Sewilli, to nic nie powinni艣my przegapi膰..

Alcazar w Sewilli jest pa艂acem kr贸lewskim -  pierwotnie fortem Maur贸w. Jest to najstarszy pa艂ac kr贸lewski nadal u偶ywany w Europie.

Kolejni monarchowie dok艂adali w艂asne dodatki do Alcazar. G贸rne poziomy Alcazar s膮 nadal u偶ywane przez rodzin臋 kr贸lewsk膮 jako oficjaln膮 rezydencj臋 w Sewilli.

Kiedy wyje偶d偶ali艣my, na zewn膮trz by艂o ch艂odno, ale kiedy dojechali艣my do  Sewilli  zrobi艂o si臋 gor膮co, 34c. My艣la艂am, jak by艂oby mi艂o, aby w tym miejscu, gdzie teraz jeste艣my, wskoczy膰 do basenu.

Wreszcie o 9 wieczorem byli艣my z powrotem w Esteponie w sam raz na kolacj臋 .... calamares i gazpacho.

Ronda, Spain

After being served a nice breakfast on the patio overlooking the sea, Joan and I departed for the city of Ronda about an hour's drive north. Well, it was suppose to be an hours drive but it was a mountain road with many twists and turns so it took a little longer.  It was like the road in Croatia and a very nice drive. 50 years since my last visit and the town has changed dramatically since that time.
In many places that were empty spaces are hotels and condominiums. What was once a beautiful bullring is now a shopping centered on the inside and strange to see it like that. We visited a few churches, the old medieval wall that surrounds the old town and walked across the bridge that was built to connect the old city with the new. They were separated for many years by a gorge and only a foot trail connected them.

Oddly enough, the first person I spoke with in Ronda was a Polish guitar player from Poznan but living now in Ronda because of lack of work in Poland. He was selling a CD of his playing so I bought one to help him out. During the day we spent here we ran into each other about 5 times.
Tomorrow we go to Sevilla and see what changes have been made there, I assume many also.

C贸偶, to by艂a rzekomo godzina jazdy, ale to by艂a g贸rska droga z wieloma zakr臋tami, wi臋c trwa艂o to  troch臋 d艂u偶ej. To by艂o podobna droga w Chorwacji i bardzo przyjemna jazda.
W wielu miejscach, gdzie by艂y puste przestrzenie, teraz s膮 hotele i mieszkania. Odwiedzili艣my kilka ko艣cio艂贸w, stare 艣redniowieczne mury otaczaj膮ce stare miasto i przeszli艣my  przez most, kt贸ry zosta艂 zbudowany by po艂膮czy膰 stare miasto z nowym.

Sprzedawa艂 p艂yty CD ze swoimi nagraniami, wi臋c kupi艂em, aby go wspom贸c. W ci膮gu ca艂ego dnia, jaki tutaj sp臋dzili艣my, wpadali艣my na siebie oko艂o 5 razy.
Jutro jedziemy do Sevilli  zobaczy膰, jakie zmiany tam zasz艂y, zak艂adam, 偶e tak偶e spore.

Estepona

This morning it was sup at 7AM, downstairs to take a taxi to the Wroc艂aw airport and the fly to Malaga. The flight was uneventful scept I think they should change the name of stewardesses to sales clerks since all they did whole trip was walk up and down the aisles selling different products.
We landed about 1:30PM and went to car rental where we were told the car we rented wasn't available and they would give us a little larger one, a Seat Ibiza with a diesel engine. That was fine with me and we packed the car and departed. It wasn't until we were half way to Estepona that I realized I didn't know how to turn on the lights and had to stop at a Seat dealer in Estepona for assistance. However, the drive itself from Malaga was beautiful, right along the sea coast but different than I remember it. So many of the single houses were gone along with open views to the sea. Hotel after hotel, apartment complexes and advertisement removed what once  a beautiful drive long ago.

We had some difficulty meeting up with the owner of the house we were to stay in and didn't actually meet until 7PM.  The house is owned by two sisters who came to Spain in the early 60's and stayed.  The house itself sits high up in the hills overlooking Estepona and the sea. We have a beautiful view outside of both of our bedroom windows and a nice breeze blowing through.  I took a few preliminary photos and more will follow.

We actually arrived at 4:30PM an, another kind of salad went to the harbour area for a tapas dinner, Tapas a servings of many kind of combinations of foods and you can order as many as you want but the waiter told us 6 is more than enough for two people, We had shrimp salad, potatoes, chicken with pineapple, pork wrapped in bacon and two others I don't remember. We were so filled we couldn't eat all of the last one.

Lot by艂 spokojny.

Wyl膮dowali艣my oko艂o 13:30 i uda艂em si臋 do wypo偶yczalni samochod贸w, gdzie powiedziano nam, 偶e samoch贸d, kt贸ry wynaj臋li艣my jest niedost臋pny, a oni daj膮 nam inny, troch臋 wi臋kszy , Seata Ibiz臋 z silnikiem Diesla. By艂em z tego faktu zadowolony, zapakowali艣my baga偶 do  samochodu i pojechali艣my. Byli艣my w po艂owie drogi do Estepona, kiedy dopiero zda艂em sobie spraw臋, 偶e nie wiem, jak w艂膮czy膰 艣wiat艂a i musia艂em zatrzyma膰 si臋 u dealera Seata w Esteponie, by poprosi膰 o pomoc. Jednak sama droga z Malagi by艂a pi臋kna, tu偶 przy brzegu morza, ale inna ni偶 ta, kt贸r膮 pami臋tam. Teraz hotel za hotelem, apartamentowce i reklamy usun臋艂y ten kiedy艣 pi臋kny dawno temu krajobraz.

Mieli艣my pewne trudno艣ci w spotkaniu si臋 z w艂a艣cicielem domu, w kt贸rym si臋 zatrzymamy i faktycznie nie spotkali艣my si臋  a偶 do godziny 19:00. Zrobi艂em kilka zdj臋膰 i wi臋cej b臋dzie p贸藕niej.

W艂a艣ciwie przybyli艣my na miejsce o 16:30 i udali艣my si臋 do dzielnicy portowej na obiad , a w艂a艣ciwie na tapas. Jedli艣my sa艂atk臋 z krewetek, ziemniaki, kurczaka z ananasem, wieprzowin臋 zawijan膮 w boczku , a dw贸ch innych nie pami臋tam. Byli艣my tak najedzeni, 偶e nie mogli艣my zje艣膰 wszystkiego do ko艅ca.
