Memorial Day

Memorial Day in Poland and in our house has 2 meanings although one will continue forever. It's been one week since my son passed and memory of him will be a daily occurrence.

It was another warm day, 33c with sunny skies an we stayed home to avoid the heat. Mainly watching movies with little motivation to do anything else. I have to get out of this state of mind somehow.
:
At 18:00 there was a procession through the neighborhood from the church.

34c

34c(93F) today with sunny skies but still not hot in our flat because of the cross-breeze from open windows.

We're trying everything to keep our minds off the tragedy we are suffering from now. We watched a few old movies, an old football game and did some studying. I even read a little news today.

It seems Poland wants a permanent U.S. military presence and is willing to pay up to $2 billion to get it. They want American soldiers on the ground for protection against Russia. It's called "A Proposal for a U.S. Permanent Presence in Poland”. It will be interesting to see how "Orange Head" reacts to it. It will also be interesting to see how other European allies view it, like Italy and Germany who want to improve relations with Russia.

Joan's surprise.

Even in the darkest time of my life there has to be some light somewhere. I tried to find a little today on Joan's birthday, for both of us. Maybe her grief is not as total as mine because he was my son but she knew him since he was 5 years old. She grew to love him so she feels the pain now like me.

I took her to Kobylniki Palace, north of where we live, about 45 minutes. It's a quiet place where we spent the night and had dinner in a nearby town.  The palace was catering to a Communion party so their dinner menu was limited, too limited for us. We drove 8 km to Goscińiec Sanguszko, a nice restaurant with fairly cheap prices for dinner. In the morning we had the breakfast buffet at the palace and then had a leisurely drive back home.

The afternoon and evening passed pleasantly but not without many moments of thinking about my son. In the early morning, I went for a walk around the palace and there were heavy, dark clouds but one cloud above them all was white with sunlight. I thought that must be Eric, free from all the trials and tribulations of the world below him. It made me a little happy.

Pokochała go, więc czuje teraz ból podobny do mojego.

Rano w pałacu mieliśmy śniadanie w formie bufetu, a następnie pojechaliśmy do domu.

Popołudnie i wieczór upłynęły przyjemnie, wielokrotnie myślałem o moim synu. To mnie trochę uszczęśliwiło.

During this saddest time in my life I hope the celebration of Joan's birthday will lift her spirits as well as my own. I was going to cancel it and know she would understand but we need something to get us on a road to recovery so I am doing it. I may not write about it or what we did for a few days but I will eventually when I can. I am so up and down at any moment. A memory or a thought of Eric comes into mind and tears are automatic, I have no control. The grief in my heart is overwhelming. If there is any solace it's that it happened very quickly and he did not suffer........but he was so young. My family research has ended, I have no son to pass it to.

My son loved to surf. He has taken his last surf ride into the sunset. The picture above is from a few years ago. He passed away yesterday morning at age 49. He and I were and are not very religious but we do believe in God. If you do,  I ask you to pray for his soul, that he has found peace.

New idea.

Joan is trying something different with the Zucchini soup recipe this week. She is making it like she normally does but when it is finished she will put it into the refrigerator and let it get cold. We want to see if it will taste as good cold as it does when it is hot. If it it does we will have another cold soup for summer along with chłodnik and gazpacho. I will let you know the results.

We did our normal shopping for the week, cost 105 PLN.

Our friend, Stash, came to visit today and he was the first one to try our new entrance system to the building. He called to us and we let him in although he said it was not necessary because both doors still were not locked. It is strange to have a security system where the doors can be freely opened. Maybe the installer forgot to do that part. This will have to be brought to the attention of the building administration.

I have made my plan of surprise for Joan's birthday. I thought of it this morning and set it in motion. I will not be writing a blog this coming Saturday, her birthday, but will tell you about it on Sunday with pictures.

Będzie to musiało zostać przedstawione administracji budynku.

Yes, it was a beautiful day.

Today I paid the phone bill, 84 PLN($23,EURO-20) for the month including internet. It averages about 100PLN for both of our Samsung Galaxy 6 phones.

The first thing I did was write a letter to the church in Posen, Illinois where my mother was born and ask if they could send me an official church document of her birth and who her parents were. The State did not start keeping birth records until 3 years after she was born and I need proof of my connection to the Kazmiercak family here. In her time, Posen was an all Polish community, now it is mainly Mexican so I wrote the letter in English and Spanish. I sent 2 emails but got no reply.

The second thing in the morning was a conversation in Spanish with 2 Polish ladies, one from Warsaw and the other living in Berlin but now in Cadiz. I was a little late joining them because the connection was broken and it took Echostar 20 minutes to fix it.

After that I had a Polish conversation with Lila from Bydgoszcz for an hour and then Joan and I studied together. At 14:30 we went to Sowa's to meet with our friend, Zbyszek.
We discussed the trouble last week in Poznań between fanatic football fans from Warsaw and Poznań and the police. They are called hooligans. They have been a problem for a long time and yet nothing has been done to stop the fights. In other countries, like England, it was also a problem. However, England found a solution they should adopt here.

In England. if someone causes trouble during a match, for example, throwing stones or bottles, the minimum fine 20,000 GBP. That is 100,000PLN. If the offense is more severe there is suspension of entering games for 1, 2. 5 years or a Lifetime Ban. Since those rules have been implemented, the trouble at games in England has mainly disappeared.

Dołączyłem do nich spóźniony, ponieważ połączenie zostało przerwane, a Echostarowi zajęło 20 minut, aby to naprawić.

O 14:30 pojechaliśmy do Sowy, by spotkać się z naszym przyjacielem, Zbyszkiem.
Dyskutowaliśmy o zeszłotygodniowych problemach  w Poznaniu pomiędzy fanami futbolu z Warszawy i Poznania a policją.

Designed Obsolesence

I heard that term several years ago. It means manufacturers who design something into their products to make them stop working after a few years so that you have to but another one. The first product that did had it was the light bulb. The original one could last for a much longer time than the ones we have now.

I don't know if it applies to all products but I thought it yesterday when my Cisco modem stopped working properly after only 2 years of service. It kept disconnecting me from the internet. I took it back to my provider and they gave me a new one of a different brand, Arris, model CM820. My connections are much faster now and we will see how long this one lasts.

I went early today to my friend Radek's house to watch a replay of last night's basketball game between Boston and Cleveland, game 4 of a 7 game series. He made breakfast of scrambled eggs, ham, toast, cucumbers, tomatoes, coffee and tea that we ate while we watched the replay. He has Canal+ on his TV which broadcasts replays of games played the night before but at 9:00 the next morning. After the game we studied Spanish together. Thursday he goes to Rome for another Tango weekend. He is about 25 years younger than me but we have the same spirit.

Joan was at home studying Spanish and doing exercises in Spanish. When I got back home we went over them and she got almost all of them right. We were both happy. Saturday is her birthday and I have to do something special for her, what I am not sure yet.

Słyszałem to określenie kilka lat temu.

Zabrałem go do mojego dostawcy i dali mi nowy marki Arris, model CM820.

Dziś rano poszedłem do domu mojego przyjaciela Radka, aby obejrzeć powtórkę z wczorajszego meczu koszykówki pomiędzy Bostonem i Cleveland, gra 4. z 7. serii gier.

Kiedy wróciłem do domu, powtórzyliśmy je, a ona opanowała prawie wszystkie.

Lovely Day

A lovely day today for another walk around and see the beauty of this world we were given. I am so tired of hearing, watching, seeing about death and destruction on those rare occasions when the TV comes on before I can switch to an external drive to watch something educational. I find a lot on YouTube that I put on external drives to view on the big screen. I particularly like the TedTalks programs and, of course, Español com Juan. He speaks at a higher level than I am ready for but still, I do get some things out of it. Besides that, he is very funny in the way he expresses himself.

Today Joan and I started studying today as teacher/student from the Easy Spanish book we both have. We used it in Spain but went through it so fast I knew there was a lot Joan didn't comprehend so we are going over it all again and I, I hope, can explain it to her slowly so this time it will sink in. She was satisfied with this first session so I was too. I just want to get her to the place where she is a little comfortable speaking easy Spanish sentences.

New buildings

Perfect day for a walk so we walked up Literacka street to see the progress of the new housing complexes being built.

We passed by Elite, a nearby pastry shop and continued to the first complex started last year. The third floor and final floor is being built but compared to the newere complex just started this year, it has been a slow process.

This newer one has, at least, 4 times as many buildings under construction already and moves along at a much faster pace. There is a third complex started 2 years ago and is still not finished.

Walking along the path from Koszalińska to Żołnerzy and looking at a tree we both like but don't know the name of, we were surprised to meet with an "old" young friend of ours who was bicycling to someones house. He was home from university and waiting to see if he is accepted for an internship in a company in Estonia. It's been exciting to watch him grow from a young boy into a young adult and see how much he has changed. We like him very much.

Back at home, Joan is deciding what to make for dinner while I arrange the pictures I took and write this blog. Later I will talk with Carmelo and then Joan with Karen.

Idealny dzień na spacer, więc przeszliśmy ulicą Literacką, aby zobaczyć postępy budowanych nowych kompleksów mieszkaniowych.
Minęliśmy pobliską cukiernię Elite i kontynuowaliśmy pierwszy kompleks rozpoczęty w zeszłym roku.
Bardzo go lubimy.
Później porozmawiam z Carmelo i Joan z Karen.

ANOTHER sad day in America.

I've gotten past..."I just can't believe it!". I DO believe it. It happens frequently enough now that it just the latest episode of a long story. Another unstable young man decided to enter his high school, this time in the state of Texas, kill 10 students and wound 10 others. Fortunately or unfortunately, he didn't have the courage to kill himself. What could possibly make someone do this? Yes, access to the weapons is one thing but not the only thing. I cannot comprehend a reason for this absurd act. There is no place in the world for people like this and, fortunately, Texas, I  believe is a state that has the death penalty. I hope his punishment comes swiftly.  You may not agree but this is my opinion. It is only May and already 22 students have been murdered in schools. There have been more deaths in US school shootings so far in 2018 than there have been deaths in the US military, according to the Washington Post. CNN BBC and SkyNews TV is so saturated with British weddin I only found out about the shooting on FaceBook. It shows how the "news" is more entertainment than the news anymore. My cousin gets married next month. Will his marriage be covered by those 3 channels? I think not.

On the brighter side, it was a beautiful day for a walk after an early morning conversation with Carmelo. Unfortunately, my internet provider, Echostar, kept losing our connection every 3-4 minutes so we had many interruptions. After an hour of this we decided to reschedule for tomorrow at 15:30 and hope they have fixed the problem.

Przeszłam ... "Po prostu nie mogę w to uwierzyć!". Wierzę w to.

He pasado ... "¡No puedo creerlo!".

Dinner

We arrived punctually at 15:30 at the restaurant in the Hotel Rzymski to meet our friend Zbyszek on our annual asparagus dinner. I will not go into the details of what we ate, because I took the time to sign the photos I made, with a description of what each of us ate. If you are interested, you can see the pictures on the right. We spent time eating and talking 2 pleasant hours. One of the things we talked about was the bazaar building across the street. Historically, it is an important building in Poznań. At one point it was a hotel with a ballroom on the third floor. Now on the first floor there is a restaurant, and the ballroom is rented only for special occasions. The hotel section can not be re-opened because the Ministry of Culture because says that the door have no original door handles, such as before the war. Thus, a beautiful hotel building in a great location is not used. There are many mansions or palaces that fall into disrepair because of strict regulations that owners must follow to restore them for use. How do you restore the 300-year-old palace to its original state?

Spędziliśmy razem jedząc i rozmawiając 2 przyjemne godziny.

Aparagus time

Since the election of "Orange Head" I have said nothing good about him and for good reasons. Today the ONLY thing I can say that is good is that the currency exchange rate is at the highest it's been in years for us. That means 1 USD is worth 3.62 zloties today. It has been as low as 2.20. The exchange rate always affects us because we live on a U.S. Social Security fund and get paid, monthly, in U.S. dollars that have to be converted into Polish money to be used here. I could be wrong but I think it is also good for the Polish economy because we pay more taxes to Poland with the higher rate. It doesn't mean I would vote for him because that would NEVER happen.

Today was food shopping day for the week. We spent 137 PLN for groceries.

Zybyszek called in the afternoon and we agreed to have our annual asparagus dinner tomorrow afternoon in Hotel Rome at 15:30. This whole month is asparagus month in Poznań

Cały ten miesiąc to w Poznaniu miesiąc szparagów.

Surprised again.

Another surprise from Amazon, they delivered the "lost in transit" Spanish books today. These are the same 2 books they delivered 2 weeks ago, free of charge, to make up for the lost books. I will give the first, Easy Spanish, to Joan for using and give the Advanced book to my friend Radek. He liked the English-Spanish book because it helps him with both languages.

We're watching an interesting series now from BBC called, Line of Duty. As you might guess from the title it's another police series taking place in England. It has 4 seasons so far but only 6 episodes per season so it won't take long to watch them all.

We received news from Karen that she got back 2 of the 5 documents with the Apostille attached. It's been 4 1/2 weeks since I mailed them to her. This is definitely a waiting game.

Pierwszą „Łatwy hiszpański” dam Joan, aby używała i książkę Advanced dam mojeu  znajomemu,  Radkowi. Lubił angielsko-hiszpańską książkę, ponieważ pomaga mu w obu językach.

Oglądamy teraz interesującą serię z BBC o nazwie Line of Duty.

Minęły 4 i pół tygodnia, odkąd je wysłałem. To zdecydowanie gra na czekanie.

New hat.

I met with my friend Radek, who came back from Romania last Friday. He brought me a present in the form of a new hat. In the picture that he sent to me, I got him wearing it and I liked it, so I asked him to buy it for me. He said he bought it in the north of Romania and was glad he did because he did not see it during the rest of the country.
We spent almost an hour and a half looking at the photos he did and said he liked the country very much. People were very friendly, the city he visited was extraordinary and he could not believe how many interesting churches he took pictures. He usually does not photograph churches, but he said that the churches were beautiful, very colorful inside and outside. I was very surprised how impressive the churches had made on him.
According to him, in Romania there are many castles and palaces, and the most beautiful one he saw belonged to the first king of Romania.
Peles Castle is a neo-Renaissance castle in the Carpathians, near Sinaia in Romania, on the existing medieval route connecting Transylvania and Wallachia, built in 1873-1914. Its opening took place in 1883. It was built for King Karol I.

Zamek Peles to neorenesansowy zamek w Karpatach, w pobliżu Sinaia w Rumunii, na istniejącym średniowiecznym szlaku łączącym Transylwanię i Wołoszczyznę, wybudowanym w latach 1873-1914.

Zbyt skomercjalizowany i przepełniony turystami.

It's OK now.

I finally discovered the to make audio files that I can put on my phone for self-study of vocabulary. It's not that I was thinking about it before today but today I thought about it and did it. Now I can review new words I learn no matter where I am. Estoy allegro-I'm happy. I've been making lists for some time now of words and phrases and having Joan quiz me on them everyday.  My writing isn't that good so sometimes she has difficulty reading what I wrote. Now I can just listen and review. Another step forward..

Kind of freaked out last night when my external drives wouldn't work on our Samsung Smart TV and naturally I had no idea why. I tried several things to fix it but none worked. Finally, I just reset the TV to it's factory default settings, upgraded the software and now it works again. It's the old love/hate relationship with electronics.

Teraz mogę i słuchać, i przeglądać.

To stary związek miłości / nienawiści z elektroniką.

Opera fountain

82F with sunny skies so we just had to go out. We went to the fountain in front of the Opera house, sat on one of the benches in the shade and then I walked around taking pictures of people and the fountain. It seems that I do this every year however, this year, this is not a beautiful display of flowers planted around the fountain. It's too bad. We stayed for about 1 1/2 hours and then decided to walk the 6 blocks to the rynek. It was a good exercise for both of us.

We passed by 2 ice cream shops and both had long lines of people waiting to buy ice cream. I just can't see waiting in long lines for anything. Maybe it's because of the 4 years being in the Navy and waiting in line for breakfast, lunch and dinners everyday.

At the rynek we thought we would see what the replacement restaurant for Room 55 was like and if they served Cafe Mrzona. They did and I ordered 2. It had the taste of eggnog with coffee in it. A little strange to be sure but not bad. While we we sitting there the usual begging lady was making her rounds soliciting money from anyone willing to give her a zloty or two, not many were.

Earlier in the morning, 9:00, I had a Spanish conversion with Carmelo and I was happy to hear that he could hear progress in my speaking.

To źle.

Zrobili i zamówiłem 2.

Pasamos a 2 heladerías.

Good day

Talking with a doctor/friend of mine today I was a little surprised to learn the 30% of the doctors in Poland are over 70 years old. It makes sense though, considering how many have left the country to earn more money for what they due.

On the bright side, it was a beautiful day, even with some cloud cover and we were outside for a while. Nothing special, just looking at all the new construction in the area and what it will mean for the local stores and the new, bigger church. More people should mean more parishoner's meaning more money for the church. That could be a good thing.

My friend, Radek, just came back from Romania and we're going to meet on Tuesday. I'm sure he will have a lot of stories to tell me. He brought back a hat for me like the one he was wearing in the picture
.

35

It's hard to believe that 35 years ago in this month I began building this house in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to live a more natural life in the middle of a forest while the love of my life lived in Chicago. It was a more difficult decision than moving to Poland but both I have no regrets about. To be sure, life was much more simpler during my life in the woods and afar fewer bills to pay for rent, electricity, heating, etc. Life was good then as it has been these last 10 years. The difference is I knew my neighbors, even if they lived 1km or 2 away and most did on their own property.  Here, we are acquainted with 2 neighbors but have never shared bread. In the U.P. we gathered, 10-15 of us, for a potluck dinner and sport at least once a month. I put pictures on the right side of the blog.

Today I started my first International Skype group to speak Spanish with other learners of different levels. There is one lady from Warsaw, one from England, one from Australia and 2 more joined just as I had to leave. I don't know where they are from yet. The first 3 are more advanced than me and not opposed to helping me learn to speak correctly. That is good for me. I'm limiting the group to 6 people so everyone has a chance to speak. Today's conversation was 1 1/2 hours but I had to leave early because I had a scheduled conversation with Pablo at 11:00. We will meet on Friday's if possible.
