Hello sunny Poland!!

A long night, waiting for the alarm to go off at 4AM so we could get ready to go to the airport but naturally it was not easy to fall asleep.  I think I must have woke up 4 or 5 times during the night and when it finally got close to alarm time I was awake anyway and didn’t need it.
The taxi was waiting outside for us on the dark and damp morning for the 20 minute ride to the airport to the west of where we stayed.

Inside it was a comedy of errors with our pre-bought, online tickets because on the printed out page with the tickets it says “tear here” and I did, only to find out that meant for the boarding attendant, not for me to do.  So when we got to the desk we were told these tickets weren’t good and to go stand in another line to have new tickets printed.   Minutes later the desk clerk said our bag had somehow gained 20 kilos and now we owed an additional 80 Euro for luggage. Maybe the dirty clothes was the cause of the weight gain but how do you argue with someone who controls the scales? Finally, 20 minutes later, we boarded the plane only to find out our reserved seat number was not printed on the new ticket and we were told to sit anywhere we could find a seat.  We were at the end of the boarding so there wasn’t a lot of choices for seating. Luckily, I still had my printed flight confirmations with me an I proved our reservation in the first row.  Writing this now, in the air, at least we’ll get off the plane quickly when we land in another  minutes. The sun is shining, we’re flying over the Alps in France now and soon we’ll be back in Poland. 

OK, back in Poznan and it's 31c and sunny. Unbelievable!!

Długa noc, czekając na alarm, aby przejść się o 4 nad ranem, więc możemy się przygotować, aby przejść do lotniska, ale oczywiście nie było łatwo zasnąć. Sądzę, że obudził się 4 lub 5 razy w ciągu nocy, a kiedy w końcu blisko godzinę alarmu byłem obudzony i tak i nie potrzebują.

Taksówka czekała na zewnątrz na nas rano ciemnym i wilgotnym w 20 minut można dojechać na lotniska do zachodniej, gdzie spędziliśmy noc.

Wewnątrz była komedia błędów z naszych wstępnych kupowanych, bilety online, ponieważ na wydrukowanej na stronie z biletów mówi "rozerwać tutaj" i ja, tylko dowiedzieć się, że przeznaczone do internatu opiekun nie dla mnie, aby zrobić . Więc gdy mamy do biurka powiedziano nam te bilety nie były dobre i iść stać w innym wierszu mieć nowe bilety wydrukowane. Po kilku minutach recepcjonista powiedział nasz worek jakoś przytył 20 kilo i teraz należne dodatkowe 80 euro za bagaż. Może brudne ubrania było przyczyną przybierania na wadze, ale jak można dyskutować z kimś, kto kontroluje wagę? Wreszcie, 20 minut później wsiedliśmy do samolotu tylko, aby dowiedzieć się nasza zastrzeżone numer miejsca nie została wydrukowana na nowym bilecie i kazano nam usiąść w dowolnym miejscu możemy znaleźć miejsce. Byliśmy na koniec pokład więc nie był dużo wyborów do siedzenia. Na szczęście miałem jeszcze moje wydrukowane potwierdzenia lotu ze mną I okazało się naszą rezerwację w pierwszym rzędzie. Pisząc to teraz, w powietrzu, przynajmniej będziemy wysiąść z samolotu szybko, gdy wylądujemy w kolejnych minutach.Słońce świeci, Lecimy nad Alpami we Francji teraz, a wkrótce będziemy z powrotem w Polsce.

Goodbye Barcelona!

 We spent our last afternoon on Las Ramblas, the biggest tourist street in Barcelona and then walked north to see Casa Mila.

Casa Mila, better known as La Pedrera , meaning the 'The Quarry'), is a building designed by Antoni Gaudi and built during the years 1905–1910, being considered officially completed in 1912. It is located at 92, Passeig de Gracia.

It was a controversial design at the time for the bold forms of the undulating stone facade and wrought iron decoration of the balconies and windows, designed largely by Josep Maria Jujol, who also created some of the plaster ceilings.

Architecturally it is considered an innovative work for its steel structure and curtain walls – the façade is self-supporting. Other innovative elements were the construction of underground car parking and separate lifts and stairs for the owners and their servants.

It was built for the married couple, Roser Segimon and Pere Milà. Roser Segimon was the wealthy widow of Josep Guardiola, an Indiano, a term applied locally to the Catalans returning from the American colonies with tremendous wealth. Her second husband, Pere Milà, was a developer who was criticized for his flamboyant lifestyle and ridiculed by the contemporary residents of Barcelona, when they joked about his love of money and opulence, wondering if he was not rather more interested in "the widow’s piggy bank, than in "Guardiola’s .

So, that concludes our Barcelona trip. It was good, the weather could have been better and actually was in Poznań last week while we were gone.

Spędziliśmy nasze ostatnie popołudnie na Las Ramblas, największego ulicznego turystyczny w Barcelonie, a następnie poszedł na północ, aby zobaczyć Casa Mila.

Tak, że kończy naszą Barcelona wycieczkę. To było dobre, pogoda mogłaby być lepsza i rzeczywiście był w Poznaniu w zeszłym tygodniu, a my już nie było.

Weather surprise.

Checking the weather it's kind of funny that back home in Poznań today it's 27c and sunny but here in Barcelona it's 20c, gray and cloudy.  So.....no Montsierrat trip this time as tomorrow morning we leave very early, 6:30AM, for Poznań.  Our host says the weather is very different from the norm at this time because usually it's t-shirt weather now in Barcelona.  Still, the weather didn't deter us from seeing the things we wanted to see, except for Montsierrat, and we're glad we made the trip here.  However, next time it will be back to Costa del Sol.

Gaudi, Cathedral and Rome

Unfortunately it was not a clear and sunny day to so we didn't go to Monsierrat as we thought we would.  After a late start, 11AM, we had breakfast outside and went to see Casa Batllo.  It is a building restored by  Antoni Gaudi and Josep Maria Jujol, built in the year 1877 and remodelled in the years 1904–1906; located at 43, Passeig de Gracia, only about 10 blocks from where we are staying. 
The local name for the building is Casa dels ossos (House of Bones), as it has a skeletal organic quality. It was originally designed for a middle -class family and situated in a prosperous district of Barcelona.
The building looks very remarkable — like everything Gaudí designed.

In 1900 it was bought by the rich industrialist Josep Battló i Casanovas who commissioned Gaudí to tear down the old house and reconstruct a new one. Gaudí however convinced Battló to remodel the existing building. Between 1904 and 1906 Gaudí redesigned the facade and roof, added an extra floor and completely remodeled the interior.

The façade of the Casa Batlló is made of sandstone covered with colorful mosaic tiles. Typical of Gaudí, straight lines are avoided whenever possible. The first floor features irregularly sculpted oval

Balconies at the lower floors have bone-like pillars, those on the upper floors look like pieces of skulls. These features gave the house the nickname 'House of Bones'. The enlarged windows on the first floor gave it another nickname, 'House of Yawns'.

After we left there we went south to Playa Catalunya and the "Gothic" district to see the famous St. Eulalia cathedral.  It is just the opposite of Sagrada Familia in it's structure and form and everybit in the old style of cathedrals with it's massive columns and forms.  A gorgeous building with so much to sit and look at.  This church is one of the most important examples of Catalan Gothic architecture.

Behind the cathedral is an old palace but what is remarkable is what is underneath it. About two levels down is the old Roman city that is being excavated and it is possible to walk through it and see what it was like to live in the days of the Romans when Barcelona was known as Barcino.  This remarkable  archeological site covers 4,000 square meters and is open to the public. It represents a large part of Roman Barcelona known as the Colonia Lulia Agustus Paternatia Barcino, founded by Emperor Augustus 10 BC.  The rooms above in the Royal Palace house an exhibition of Barcelona in the High Middle Ages from the 8th to the 13th century. We spent about two hours underground reading and looking at everything uncovered so far.  It was really amazing.

We have one day left and if the weather is good tomorrow it's off to Montsierrat.

Niestety to nie był jasny, słoneczny dzień, aby tak nie poszliśmy do Monsierrat jak myśleliśmy tak. Po koniec start, 11AM, mieliśmy poza śniadanie i udał się do Casa Batlló. Jest to budynek odnowiony przez Antonio Gaudiego i Josep Maria Jujol, wybudowany w roku 1877 i przebudowany w latach 1904-1906; znajduje się na 43, Passeig de Gracia, zaledwie o 10 przecznic od gdzie przebywają.

D Day

Well, today was D Day and what better way to celebrate it than a trip to the Salvador Dali museum in Figueres, Spain.  Joan and I have been waiting for this for a long time.

We decided to take the Spanish Renfe train express to Figueres and get there in an hour and a half.  It wasn't quite so simple however.  The Express doesn't really start until you get to the second stop out of Barcelona name "Clot" and there you change for the express.  Not knowing this we missed our change time and had to wait  and hour for the "regional" train that stopped at every little place along the way so instead of arriveing in Figueres at 12:00 we didn't get there until 1:30PM.  Our plan was to get there at  12PM, have lunch and be at the museum by 1:30. Obviously that didn't work our and we didn't get to Dali's until 2:30.  The museum closes at 6PM so we still had enough time to see everything and take pictures.  There are more than a few pictures and sculptures on display we had never seen before so that was a nice surprise.

Coming back we were going to take the express again only to find out it didn't  run until 8:30 PM and we were not about to wait two hours for it so we took the regional again and got back to Barcelona at 8:30.  Instead of dinner we just had coffee and pastries. 

The weather in Barcelona was gray and cloudy when we left but sunny and clear in Figueres.

Cóż, dzisiaj było D Dzień i co lepszego sposobu, żeby to uczcić niż wycieczkę do muzeum Salvadora Dali w Figueres, Hiszpania. Joan i czekali na to przez długi czas.

Zdecydowaliśmy się wziąć Renfe hiszpański pociąg ekspresowy do Figueres i dotrzeć w półtorej godziny. To nie było aż tak proste jednak.Express nie naprawdę zacząć, aż dojdziesz do sekundy zatrzymać z nazwą Barcelona "Clot" i tam zmieniasz na Express. Nie wiedząc o tym straciliśmy naszą czas zmiany i musieliśmy czekać i godziny dla "regionalne" pociągu, który zatrzymał się na każdym małym miejscu po drodze więc zamiast arriveing ​​w Figueres at 12:00 nie dostaliśmy tam do 1:30 PM. Naszym planem było się tam dostać na 12PM, zjeść obiad i być w muzeum przez 1:30. Oczywiście, że nie pracy naszych i nie dostać się do Dalego aż 2:30. W muzeum czynna jest 6PM więc mieliśmy jeszcze wystarczająco dużo czasu, żeby zobaczyć wszystko i robić zdjęcia. Istnieje więcej niż kilka zdjęć i rzeźb na wystawie nigdy nie widział tak, że była miła niespodzianka.

Wracając mieliśmy do podjęcia wyraźnych ponownie tylko dowiedzieć się, że nie potrwa do 8:30 PM i nie byliśmy o dwie godziny czekać na nią tak wzięliśmy regionalnych ponownie i wrócił do Barcelony o 8:30 . Zamiast kolacji mieliśmy tylko kawę i ciastka.

Pogoda w Barcelonie był szary i pochmurny gdy wyszliśmy ale słoneczna w Figueres.

Inside Sagrada Familia & Bullring

Is there a better way to spend a day than visiting the inside of La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona?  Maybe, but this was an exceptional experience for us.  We walked to Familia and got there an hour early to sit opposite it and drink coffee while we waited for our time to enter, 11AM. Previously we bought tickets online and had NO waiting time in lines to enter.  Inside the gate we went to pick up our audiophones to follow the guided tour while inside and out.

Each location is well marked so it was easy to find them all and listen to the descriptions of what we were looking at although there is so much to see it's hard to concentrate on one thing at a time.  Inside is magnificient with stained glass windows everywhere and so much light coming into the cathedral I had no problem taking pictures that might have come out too dark. In almost any spot you are at there is so much to see that it's hard to move to a new location because the longer you stay in one place the more you see.

The two outside facades are the most striking, on th west and east side and each one is in a completely different style as you can see in the pictures.  The west side, the "Passion" side, the statues and figures are more square in shape than on the east, "Nativity" side. Gaudi's original design did this on purpose.

Really, it's difficult to express the words needed to describe everything so just enlarge each picture and look at them for a minute or two and you will know what I mean.  We spent two hours inside but could easily have spent 8 and still not noticed everthing.  The winding staircases, the three different kinds of columns inside to hold the structure up, the balconies, the floor, the main altar, the lighting, stained glass, everything is marvelous and it's not finished yet.  Some say it will take another 20 years, some 50 and some 100.  Who know but when it is completed there will be nothing like it anyplace else in the world.  Yes, it was somewhat expensive to see, 38 Euro for both of us, but the money goes toward future construction and we didn't mind helping to pay for it.  It's worth it.

Czy istnieje lepszy sposób na spędzenie dnia niż odwiedzenie wnętrze La Sagrada Familia w Barcelonie? Być może, ale to było wyjątkowe doświadczenie dla nas. Szliśmy do Familia, ale tam o godzinę wcześniej, aby usiąść naprzeciwko niej i pić kawę, a my czekaliśmy na naszego czasu, aby wejść i 11AM. Wewnątrz znajduje magnificient z witrażami wszędzie i tyle światło wpadające do katedry nie miałem problemu, biorąc zdjęcia, które mogły się zbyt ciemny. W prawie każdym miejscu jesteś na nie jest tak dużo, aby zobaczyć, że trudno przenieść do nowej lokalizacji, ponieważ dłuższy pobyt w jednym miejscu, tym bardziej widać.

 Dwa zewnętrzne elewacje są najbardziej uderzające w wieku zachodzie i East Side, oraz każdy z nich jest w zupełnie innym stylu, jak widać na zdjęciach. West Side, "Pasja" z boku, posągi i figury są bardziej kwadratowe niż na wschodzie, "Nativity" strona. Oryginalny projekt Gaudiego zrobił to celowo.

 Naprawdę, trudno jest wyrazić słowa potrzebne do opisania wszystkiego tak po prostu powiększyć każde zdjęcie i patrzeć na nich przez minutę lub dwie, a będziesz wiedział, co mam na myśli. Spędziliśmy dwie godziny w środku, ale można było z łatwością spędził 8 i jeszcze nie zauważyłem everthing. Klatki schodowe kręte, trzy różne rodzaje kolumn wewnątrz do posiadających strukturę up i balkonach, podłogowe, ołtarz główny, oświetlenie, witraże, wszystko jest cudowne i nie jest jeszcze gotowy. Niektórzy mówią, że to zajmie kolejne 20 lat, około 50 i około 100. Kto wie jednak, kiedy zostanie zakończona nie będzie nic podobnego nigdzie indziej w świecie. Tak, to było dość drogie, aby zobaczyć, 38 euro dla nas obu, ale pieniądze idą w kierunku przyszłej budowy i nie przeszkadza pomaga za to zapłacić. To warto.

One last stop today was at the Plaza de los Toros Monumental that I mentioned the other day.  It was the place of the last bullfight in Barcelona before they were suspended.  Fortunately, at the time we arrived it was open to go inside and see what it looked like. The echoes of the "old days" could still be felt in the air and imagination could recall bullfights I had seen some 50 years ago when I lived in Spain. I was happy to have Joan with me so she could, in some ways, experience the Spanish bullring. We spent  about an hour sitting and walking around then returned to our room to await dinner at about 8:30PM.

Jeden ostatni przystanek dzisiaj był na Plaza de los Toros Monumental, które wymieniłem na drugi dzień. To było miejsce ostatniej walki byków w Barcelonie, zanim zostały one zawieszone. Na szczęście, w chwili dotarliśmy to było otwarte do środka i zobaczyć co to wyglądało. Echa tych "dawnych czasach" może nadal być odczuwalne w powietrzu i wyobraźni mógł sobie przypomnieć walk widziałam jakieś 50 lat temu, kiedy mieszkałem w Hiszpanii. Byłem szczęśliwy, że Joan ze mną tak mogłaby w pewnym sensie doświadczenie hiszpańskiej walki byków. Wydaliśmy około godziny siedzi i spaceru po czym wrócił do naszego pokoju czekać na kolację około 8:30 PM.

King Alfons Palace

An ambitious day for us. Yesterday we walked the 25, uphill, blocks to Gaudi's park and back.  Today we decided to walk to the Palace of King Alphonse XIII, not knowing it had been converted into a museum for art and is not a palace like we were hoping to see.  The walk was 40 or more blocks there and then back.  You can only imagine how exhausted we are now, back home in our room and in a prone position.  However, the day turned out to be a beautiful day for a walk and we are, now, glad we took the time.  Built in the 1920s as the palatial estate of Count Eusebi Güell—one of Gaudí's most important patrons—this mansion was transformed into a royal palace by architect Eusebi Bona i Puig and completed in 1929. King Alfonso XIII, grandfather of Spanish king Juan Carlos I, visited the palace in the mid-1920s before its completion.  It is located high upon a hill overlooking Playa Espanya and affords many great views of the city.

At the Playa we saw the old bullfighting ring, now converted into a tourist attraction. The Arenas (Arenes in Catalan) was built between 1889 and 1900 as the Plaça de Toros de les Arenes, the bullring of Barcelona. It was designed by the Catalan architect August Font i Carreras in a Moorish style with a monumental horseshoe shaped entrance decorated with colorful tiles.

The arena, which has a diameter of 52 meters (171 ft), could seat up to 16,000 spectators. Besides bullfights, the arena also played host to a number of concerts; the Beatles even performed here in 1966.

Bullfighting never really caught on in Catalonia and the last bullfight took place on June 9, 1977, leaving the Plaza de Toros Monumental as the only bullfighting arena in Barcelona. But even that arena closed in early 2012 when a bullfighting ban went into effect in Catalonia.

For decades, the arenas de Barcelona stood empty and it took until 1999 before plans were launched to turn the arena into a modern shopping and entertainment center.

One thing is evident, no matter where you are, if you are high on a hill you will definitely get some kind of view of La Sagrada Familia.

From our room we walked two blocks south to Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, on of the major thoroughfares in Barcelona and west toward our destination. It's a vary wide avenue with a lane in the center for pedestrians and bicyclists.  However, you don't see many bikers, most use scooters. Gran Via takes you all the way to Playa Espanya.  From there you take Avenue de les Reina Maria Cristina south through the double portal towers to the palace.  There are fountains on both side all the way to the Palace but today they were not turned on.  What a pity.

Ambitny dzień dla nas. Wczoraj poszliśmy do 25, pod górę, bloki do parku Gaudiego i pleców. Dzisiaj zdecydowaliśmy się na spacer do Pałacu króla Alfonsa XIII, nie wiedząc, że został przekształcony w muzeum dla sztuki i nie jest pałac jak mieliśmy nadzieję zobaczyć. Piechotą wynosił 40 lub więcej bloków tam iz powrotem. Można sobie tylko wyobrazić, jak wyczerpany jesteśmy teraz, z powrotem do domu w naszym pokoju oraz w pozycji leżącej. Jednak dzień okazał się piękny dzień na spacer i jesteśmy teraz, zadowolony, że wziął czas. Zbudowany w 1920 roku jako pałacowych posiadłości hrabiego Eusebi Güell Gaudiego-jeden z najważniejszych patronów, to rezydencja została przekształcona w pałacu królewskiego architekta Eusebi Bona i Puig i zakończona w 1929 roku. Król Alfons XIII, dziadek hiszpańskiego króla Juana Carlosa I, odwiedzili pałac w połowie 1920 roku przed jego zakończeniem. Znajduje się on wysoko na wzgórzu Playa Espanya i daje wiele wspaniałych widoków na miasto.

 Na Playa widzieliśmy stare areny walki byków, teraz przekształcone w atrakcję turystyczną. Arenas (Arenes w języku katalońskim) został wybudowany w latach 1889 i 1900 jako Plaça de Toros de Les Arènes, areny walki byków w Barcelonie. Został on zaprojektowany przez katalońskiego architekta Augusta Font i Carreras w stylu mauretańskim z monumentalnym wejściem w kształcie podkowy ozdobiony kolorowymi kafelkami.

There is absolutely NO way I can describe what  Joan and I saw today.The best thing for you to do is go online and search for Antonio Gaudi's Sagrada Familia and his park, Parc Guell.  Our plan was just to see the park today but the 25 block walking trip there took us so close to Sagrada Familia I just had to see it before our meeting on Wednesday.  It is SPACTACULAR and no pictures can do justice to it without actually standing in front of it.  Of course, the place is packed with tourists and the line to get tickets went around one block and into another.  I don't know why people don't buy their tickets online to avoid the line.  At the online ticket booth there were only 3 people waiting.  We spent an hour and a half looking at the cathedral, sat at a cafe to have coffee and look smoe more at it, then started the uphill walk to the park.

It's a continual uphill climb as you pass from one street to another and we did stop twice along the way to take a little break.  By the time we reached the top of the hill we sat and drink some water we carried with us and then went into the park. Among the many striking things about this park is the amount of mosaic tiles used everywhere, even in the ceilings of the support that holds up the big center where people sit on Gaudi's long, winding, mosaic bench.  It's really incredible and I'm sure if you read about it  by professional writers they can tell you more.  For me, all I can say is you can't get the imopact of either place without really seeing it.

Finally about 5:30PM we started to long walk home, fortunately it was all downhill. We got back close to our room about 7PMand it was too early for dinner because in Spain it doesn't start until about 9PM so we ate a few things we had bought from the store the night befored and then took another walk east on the street we were staying on.  Upon our first arrival here I saw an intesting bulding but didn't know what it was so I wanted to find out. 

As we approached the round building my suspicion was that this buiklding was once the famous Barcelona Bull ring.  Walking rounf this red brick building you could see the places were once hung the posters for the coming bull fights and as we reached the sunny side of the bulding, the gates and ticket windows appeared also.  Yes, this was once the grand "Playa del Toros", now nothing but a memory as bull fighting has lost it's following in Barcelona and much of Spain.  Still, you could almost hear the trumpets, the shouts of the fans as the bull entered the ring and the "Ole's" as the matador made his successfull passes at the bull.  Whether is was right or wrong to have these "fights" isn't for me to say but it is part of the history of Spain that won't be forgotten.

Barcelona, Barcelona!!

Up at 5:30AM, way to early but necessary to get ready for our departure to Barcelona.  The taxi arrived promptly at 7AM and by 7:20 we were at the airport.  We checked in using our online boarding pass and didn’t have any problems.  From there we went through security, sat down and waited for our plane to arrive. At 8:45 the plane was ready for boarding, we boarded, found our seats and the plane took off.  Thanks to reserving seats by the emergency doors I had enough leg room because I remembered feeling like I was stuffed into a sardine can on our last Ryanair flight to Spain.  This time I made sure it didn’t happen again.

The flight was 2:30 minutes so not too bad.  I watched the clouds flow by and Joan slept or read her book. At about 12:00 we arrived to a cloudy Barcelona, took a taxi to our room and met Sonia. At first I had difficulty figuring out the Spanish system of entering numbers to gain entrance to a building but fortunately someone came to their flat and showed me how to contact Sonia though the intercom.  She came right down to greet us and said she was in the middle of making paella for a family dinner so we didn’t have time to talk.  She gave us the keys to her flat, showed us our room and said just to ask if we needed something.  The room is comfortable enough with a private bathroom and window overlooking the street.

We unpacked, asked her for directions to a good place to have lunch and went in search of it.  For the life of us we could not find the place and ended up eating somewhere else.  It was OK but the calamari was quite as good as I expected. Since it was only 2PM we decided to do some walking Passieg Saint Joan and stumbled across the palace of justice, castle of the three dragons, an arboretum and a street festival.  Even with the gray skies, there were lots of people outside enjoying the day of music, crafts, food and drink.  We stopped at one of the booths and tried some kind of cheese cake which was very good.  After walking around for two hours we  headed back to our room about 5PM and now we’re just relaxing and resting up for tonight’s adventure.

Po przejściu około dwie godziny udaliśmy się z powrotem do naszego pokoju około godzina siedemnasta i teraz jesteśmy po prostu relaks i odpoczynek aż do dzisiejszej przygodzie.

Once upon a time, a few years ago, we had a great view of the new church by our flat.  Now, today, we have a great view of the apartment building that hides the church from us.  The only visible link to the church is the little stick just above the fourth chimney from the left. It's the very top of the cross on the church. Progress is great but sometimes it sucks.

At least the view from our living room doesn't change and each spring it is full of flowering plants and  bushes like the ones in the picture.

Three days from now we'll be in Barcelona eating calamari and gazpacho.  We can't wait.  The weather is predicted to be between 18-20c all week with sun everyday.  That will be hard to take :-)
