Snow.

A snowfall last night made the morning view out of our bedroom window very nice. Despite the numerous building in the background, the are many trees in the yards below our window making a very nice scene. not quite like the view when we lived in Michigan but we have to settle for this one. I do miss having only nature surrounding us.

Winters in the U.P. were cold, very cold, but the scenery created by snow was beautiful. With the big windows I had in my house, nature, the forest, surrounded me.  I especially liked the mornings when my neighbor, Mike, would walk over the road to my house for coffee and a smoke of various things.

Conversations on different topics were long and always interesting. Time had no place in our lives back then. I had no clocks, cell phones, laptops, or TV in my house. Only a car battery operated the radio and tape deck for music. Music has always been and still is, a big part of my life. I have an extensive collection of music, from Willie Nelson to Mozart. Each genre serves a different feeling of any mood I might have at the time, Of all the senses, I would miss if lost, it would be hearing. Fortunately, now at age 76, they are all intact.

I miss the intellectual capacity of Joan now. This dementia is slowly taking it away from her. Dinners are mostly in silence now. If I talk about something. her replies are one-worded. She has difficulty finding words or maybe even an opinion on something. I am unable to help her and that is what hurts the most. This disease affects us both. I can handle all the physical things that are needed now, but this is very difficult.  I've resorted to using the laptop and Curiosity Stream to let her watch any documentary she might have an interest in. At least that keeps her brain busy during meals.

Opady 艣niegu zesz艂ej nocy sprawi艂y, 偶e poranny widok z okna naszej sypialni by艂 bardzo 艂adny.

Zimy w U.P. by艂o zimno, bardzo zimno, ale sceneria stworzona przez 艣nieg by艂a pi臋kna. Wielkimi oknami, kt贸re mia艂em w domu, otacza艂a mnie przyroda, las. Szczeg贸lnie podoba艂y mi si臋 poranki, kiedy m贸j s膮siad, Mike, szed艂 drog膮 do mojego domu na kaw臋 i na papierosa r贸偶nych rzeczy.

Rozmowy na r贸偶ne tematy by艂y d艂ugie i zawsze interesuj膮ce. Wtedy w naszym 偶yciu nie by艂o miejsca. Nie mia艂em w domu zegar贸w, telefon贸w kom贸rkowych, laptop贸w ani telewizora. Tylko akumulator samochodowy zasila艂 radio i magnetofon do s艂uchania muzyki. Muzyka zawsze by艂a i nadal jest du偶膮 cz臋艣ci膮 mojego 偶ycia. Ka偶dy gatunek s艂u偶y do innego odczucia dowolnego nastroju, jaki m贸g艂bym mie膰 w tym czasie, Ze wszystkich zmys艂贸w, kt贸rych bym t臋skni艂, gdyby by艂 zagubiony, by艂by to s艂uch.

Nie potrafi臋 jej pom贸c i to najbardziej boli. Uciek艂em si臋 do korzystania z laptopa i Strumienia Ciekawo艣ci, aby pozwoli膰 jej obejrze膰 ka偶dy dokument, kt贸rym mog艂aby by膰 zainteresowana. Przynajmniej to sprawia, 偶e jej m贸zg jest zaj臋ty podczas posi艂k贸w.

To no avail.

Well, I lasted almost a year before my back finally started hurting from all I am doing now. It started two days ago making it hard to sit or walk. Bartosz gave me some insights on how to relieve it and it seems to be working today. I was able to walk down the stairs, drive to the market and do the shopping for next week. I cheated a little on the menu. I copied one from a month ago along with the shopping list. I just didn't feel like putting a new one together yesterday. The good news is I only sent 145 PLN($39).

Joan had PT early today, 11:15.  When it was over, I made some coffee and we ate a few cookies while watching a rerun episode of "The Blacklist."

Despite all of the protests across Poland of the "new" abortion law, it has had NO effect on the current government. They passed it into law yesterday. Almost all legal abortions in Poland are performed on the grounds of fetal defects, so this ruling, which is final and binding, effectively bans pregnancy terminations. For years, opinion polls said a clear majority of Poles opposed a more restrictive law.

Tonight's dinner is Rustic Vegetable Soup. I put every vegetable I could buy today, add garlic, thyme, salt, pepper, and tomato paste. We both like it and it makes enough or two days, alternately.

C贸偶, wytrzyma艂em prawie rok, zanim moje plecy w ko艅cu zacz臋艂y bole膰 od wszystkiego, co teraz robi臋. Bartosz da艂 mi kilka wskaz贸wek, jak to z艂agodzi膰 i wydaje si臋, 偶e dzia艂a do dzi艣. Troch臋 oszuka艂em w menu. Skopiowa艂em jeden sprzed miesi膮ca wraz z list膮 zakup贸w.

Kiedy by艂o po wszystkim, zrobi艂em kaw臋 i zjedli艣my kilka ciastek, ogl膮daj膮c powt贸rk臋 odcinka „Czarnej listy”.

Pomimo wszystkich protest贸w w ca艂ej Polsce w sprawie „nowej” ustawy aborcyjnej, NIE mia艂o to wp艂ywu na obecny rz膮d. Wczoraj wprowadzili to w 偶ycie. Prawie wszystkie legalne aborcje w Polsce dokonywane s膮 z powodu wad p艂odu, wi臋c orzeczenie to, jako prawomocne, skutecznie zakazuje przerywania ci膮偶y.

Dzisiejsza kolacja to Rustykalna Zupa Warzywna. W艂o偶y艂em wszystkie warzywa, kt贸re mog艂em dzisiaj kupi膰, dodaj臋 czosnek, tymianek, s贸l, pieprz i koncentrat pomidorowy. Oboje nam si臋 to podoba i na przemian wystarcza na dwa dni.

Joan ten铆a PT temprano hoy, 11:15.

MRI done.

Can you believe it? The sun was actually shining through the clouds today. We really need it after waking up at 6:30 to prepare for Joan's CT scan. However, once we were at the center for it. I was told it was an MRI, not a CT scan. That kind of worried me because the technician last week said with the metal clips in her brain from the aneurysm 30 years ago, it could be dangerous to have an MRI. Today's technician, an older man, said it wasn't a problem. So, she had the examination MRI but the results won't be available for two weeks. That also concerned me.

My concern centered around our meeting next Tuesday with the neurologist. He wanted to have the results examined at our meeting. I thought it might be better to reschedule our appointment and called to advise him. He returned my call and said the results would be in a system he has access to so I should keep the appointment as scheduled.

I feel like my brain is getting scattered. I make appointments to mee someone on Skype, write it down, know on the day I have a meeting but then something comes up and I just forget it. It happened yesterday with a friend from Bydgoszcz. She even sent me an SMS in the morning but I didn't look at my phone until late in the day so I missed her again. Maybe I need to start putting signs on the wall for me. I hate when that happens. It's like with my glasses, I put them down somewhere and then spend 20 minutes trying to find them. There is just too much going on daily to keep up with.

Mo偶ecie w to uwierzy膰? Przez chmury prze艣witywa艂o dzi艣 s艂o艅ce. Naprawd臋 go potrzebowali艣my po pobudce o 6:30, 偶eby przygotowa膰 si臋 do tomografii Joanny. Jednak, gdy ju偶 byli艣my w centrum. Powiedziano mi, 偶e to rezonans magnetyczny, a nie tomografia komputerowa. To mnie zmartwi艂o, poniewa偶 technik w zesz艂ym tygodniu powiedzia艂, 偶e z metalowymi klipsami w jej m贸zgu od t臋tniaka sprzed 30 lat, zrobienie rezonansu mo偶e by膰 niebezpieczne.

Moje obawy skupia艂y si臋 wok贸艂 naszego spotkania w przysz艂y wtorek z neurologiem. On chcia艂 mie膰 wyniki badane na naszym spotkaniu. Pomy艣la艂em, 偶e mo偶e lepiej by艂oby prze艂o偶y膰 nasz termin i zadzwoni艂em, 偶eby go o tym poinformowa膰. Oddzwoni艂 do mnie i powiedzia艂, 偶e wyniki b臋d膮 w systemie, do kt贸rego ma dost臋p, wi臋c powinienem utrzyma膰 spotkanie zgodnie z planem.

Mam wra偶enie, 偶e m贸j m贸zg jest coraz bardziej rozproszony. Tak si臋 sta艂o wczoraj z kole偶ank膮 z Bydgoszczy. Wys艂a艂a mi nawet rano SMS-a, ale nie spojrza艂am na telefon a偶 do p贸藕na, wi臋c zn贸w j膮 przegapi艂am. Mo偶e musz臋 zacz膮膰 stawia膰 znaki na 艣cianie dla mnie. Nienawidz臋, kiedy to si臋 dzieje. Tam jest w艂a艣nie zbyt du偶o id膮cy dalej codziennie by nad膮偶y膰.

Nothing new.

Not much happening today.  I hurt my back lifting and moving Joan around. Trying to fix it because tomorrow I have to take her for the CT scan at 06:30. That should be fun.

Niewiele si臋 dzisiaj dzieje. Zrani艂em si臋 w plecy, podnosz膮c i przesuwaj膮c Joan. Pr贸buj臋 to naprawi膰, bo jutro o 06:30 musz臋 j膮 zabra膰 na tomografi臋 komputerow膮. To powinno by膰 zabawne.

No pasa mucho hoy.

Ciekawy Dzien.-Interesting day.

An interesting day. I had a call last night from the current resident doctor in Hipokrates, the medical clinic on the first floor below us. Speaking in English, he said he had our application for a disabled person's parking ticket and he needed to examine Joan before he filled it out. he then asked what time we would be at home tomorrow so that he could come to us. A house call. I haven't witnessed an actual doctor visit to a house since the 1950s. I told him 14:00(2PM) would be good and he said he would call 15 minutes before he came upstairs to us.

Then our friend, Marcin called and said he would like to come today between 15-16:00 and use my laptop to register Joan and me for vaccinations. He said he tried registering me, got the necessary code but then couldn't get an appointment time. He tried for Joan but it didn't work.

P.S. The doctor came on time, took all the information he needed, and said the document would be ready tomorrow. Knowing what I have experienced with bureaucracy, I will wait until Thursday to pick up the document. Then I have to contact the city and give them the document along with copies of Joan's medical history.

Marcin came at 15:30(3:30). registered Joan for a vaccine shot and got an appointment for April 1st at 13:00(1PM). The problem was it was in a town 100km from Poznan. I rejected it. He called the helpline and spoke to a woman who said there was NO vaccine available in our region, hence the necessity of the 100km trip. However, she said Poland would receive a new shipment in three days and a portion of it would be allocated to our region. She said to call back in 3 days. This is the same problem as in the United States. The only difference is there was a plan for distribution here before it arrived. Ciekawy dzie艅. M贸wi膮c po angielsku, powiedzia艂, 偶e ma nasz wniosek o wydanie karty parkingowej dla osoby niepe艂nosprawnej i 偶e musi zbada膰 Joann臋, zanim go wype艂ni. Nast臋pnie zapyta艂, o kt贸rej godzinie b臋dziemy jutro w domu, 偶eby m贸g艂 do nas przyj艣膰. Wizyta domowa.

Zadzwoni艂 m贸j kolega Marcin i powiedzia艂, 偶e chcia艂by przyj艣膰 dzisiaj mi臋dzy 15-16:00 i u偶y膰 mojego laptopa, 偶eby zarejestrowa膰 Joann臋 i mnie na szczepienie. Pr贸bowa艂 dla Joanny, ale bez skutku.

P.S. Lekarz przyszed艂 punktualnie, wzi膮艂 wszystkie potrzebne informacje i powiedzia艂, 偶e dokument b臋dzie gotowy jutro. Znaj膮c moje do艣wiadczenia z biurokracj膮, poczekam do czwartku, 偶eby odebra膰 dokument. Potem musz臋 si臋 skontaktowa膰 z miastem i przekaza膰 im dokument wraz z kopiami historii choroby Joanny.

Marcin przyszed艂 o 15:30(3:30). Zapisa艂 Joann臋 na szczepienie i dosta艂 termin na 1 kwietnia na 13:00(1PM). Odrzuci艂em go. Zadzwoni艂 na infolini臋 i rozmawia艂 z kobiet膮, kt贸ra powiedzia艂a, 偶e w naszym regionie NIE MA dost臋pnej szczepionki, st膮d konieczno艣膰 podr贸偶y 100 km. Z t膮 r贸偶nic膮, 偶e tu by艂 plan dystrybucji zanim szczepionki dotar艂y.

Type a messageUn dia interesante.

Lo rechac茅. Dijo que volviera a llamar en 3 d铆as.

Donate.

Yesterday I took a little money out of Joan's funding website and donated it to Wielka Orkestra Swiatecnej Pomocy(W.O.S.P.)

The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity Foundation was registered in Warsaw on March 2, 1993. Its founders are Jerzy Owsiak, Lidia Nied藕wiedzka-Owsiak, Bohdan Maruszewski, Piotr Burczy艅ski, Pawe艂 Januszewicz, Walter Che艂stowski, Beata Bethke. Only after the first Finale, which took place on 3 January 1993, WO艢P was registered in court. Jurek about the beginnings: "Before that, we did not think at all about establishing the Foundation, and the first fundraiser was organized based on the needs of pediatric cardiac surgery at the Children's Health Center in Warsaw. It was there that the foundation had already been collecting money for the purchase of specialist medical equipment for some time".

I wanted to give back to help the children of Poland. That is what this Foundation is all about. At the end of last year's event,  the Orchestra collected and spent to support Polish medicine, more than 1.3 billion PLN($350,000), and bought more than 65 200 devices for hospitals.

Wczoraj wyj膮艂em troch臋 pieni臋dzy ze strony fundacji Joanny i przekaza艂em je na rzecz Wielkiej Orkiestry 艢wi膮tecznej Pomocy (W.O.S.P.).

Fundacja Wielka Orkiestra 艢wi膮tecznej Pomocy zosta艂a zarejestrowana w Warszawie 2 marca 1993 roku. Jej za艂o偶ycielami s膮 Jerzy Owsiak, Lidia Nied藕wiedzka-Owsiak, Bohdan Maruszewski, Piotr Burczy艅ski, Pawe艂 Januszewicz, Walter Che艂stowski, Beata Bethke. Dopiero po pierwszym Finale, kt贸ry odby艂 si臋 3 stycznia 1993 roku, WO艢P zosta艂a zarejestrowana w s膮dzie.

Chcia艂em si臋 odwdzi臋czy膰, pom贸c dzieciom w Polsce.

La Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity Foundation se registr贸 en Varsovia el 2 de marzo de 1993. Sus fundadores son Jerzy Owsiak, Lidia Nied藕wiedzka-Owsiak, Bohdan Maruszewski, Piotr Burczy艅ski, Pawe艂 Januszewicz, Walter Che艂stowski, Beata Bethke.

Baby steps.

Last night I had a bit of hope. Joan got up from her recliner, walked in small steps into the kitchen, opened the fridge, and took out 2 pizzas to thaw.  When she was done, she turned around and walked back. I was very close to her the whole trip, just for the safety of my mind. Today, we're going to walk around the table in the dining room after each meal to keep her confidence up.

Again I have to thank any of you who contributed to the fund to help pay for daily physical therapy for Joan. It took a while but at least now it's a step forward.

I added three new recipes to try; Kapusniak, Greek Lemon Chicken, and Vegetarian Bulgar Chili. The Kapusniak is our neighbor, Marek's recipe, the second from the internet, and the Chili came from my cousin, Oliwia, in Scotland. This afternoon I mixed the ingredients for Chocolate Snowball Cookies. It has to sit overnight in the fridge and I will bake them tomorrow.

Wczoraj wieczorem mia艂em odrobin臋 nadziei. Joan wsta艂a z fotela, przesz艂a ma艂ymi kroczkami do kuchni, otworzy艂a lod贸wk臋 i wyj臋艂a dwie pizze, 偶eby je rozmrozi膰.  Kiedy sko艅czy艂a, odwr贸ci艂a si臋 i posz艂a z powrotem.

Owa膰 wszystkim, kt贸rzy wsparli fundusz, aby pom贸c w op艂aceniu codziennej terapii fizycznej dla Joan.

Doda艂em trzy nowe przepisy pr贸bowa膰; Kapu艣niak, Grecki Lemon Chicken, i Vegetarian Bulgar Chili.

Vaccinations

Trying to get registered for vaccinations is a three-prong problem. First I called the helpline but no one answered, NOT unusual. Second, Pfizer has filled only half of what was ordered initially. Third, It could be the end of March before we finally get vaccinated. Over 150,000 people had managed to register in the first three hours after the process began. Poland has almost 2.4 million people aged between 70 and 79.

As registration for coronavirus vaccines for those aged over 70 began today in Poland, many elderly people were left queueing outside for hours. Others reported difficulties getting through on overburdened helplines, only to eventually find out that there were no free vaccination slots available.

As a last resort, I called our friend, Marcin, and he said he would try and register us on Monday. I really hope he can. Now, besides Joan, I have a plumbing problem, electrical problem and TV problem in our flat. I'll have to deal with those on Monday.

Pr贸ba zarejestrowania si臋 na szczepienia to problem z trzech stron. Po drugie, Pfizer wype艂ni艂 tylko po艂ow臋 tego, co pocz膮tkowo zam贸wiono.

ostateczno艣ci zadzwoni艂am do naszego przyjaciela, Marcina, a on powiedzia艂, 偶e spr贸buje zarejestrowa膰 nas w poniedzia艂ek. Mam nadziej臋, 偶e mu si臋 uda. Teraz, opr贸cz Joanny, mam problem z hydraulik膮, elektryk膮 i telewizorem w naszym mieszkaniu. B臋d臋 musia艂 si臋 z tym upora膰 w poniedzia艂ek.

MRI or NO MRI?

The second trip for MRI also turned out to be a disaster. Again, Joan's test of her brain was not done today. The doctor did not write if it was to be an MRI or a CT scan. The technician said he had to know what to use. He said the MRI was dangerous for Joan because of the two clips she has in her brain and it might cause them to move and activate bleeding. He called the doctor but he wasn't sure either. At home, I looked through Joan's health records and see numerous mentions of CT scans. We have a new appointment for next Thursday and I will take her records with us. I should be getting reimbursed for the time wasted and gas spent to get there and back for nothing. Oh well, life in Poland.

We watched the Inauguration this morning via YouTube. I thought Biden's speech was very good and only hope some of the Trumpers were listening to it. I also hope he fulfills every promise he made.  Most of all, I hope the Democratic party realizes they must include the progressive element in the discussions they will have over issues. If it becomes JUST a "centrist" party, they will lose elections in 2022 to Republicans.  Today's news that his economic advisory panel does not have any progressives in it. That has to change. It's not a good sign.

The poem by the young poet Amanda Gorman, the Youth Poet Laureate of 2017, recited a powerful poem for the Inauguration. I liked it very much.

Drugi wyjazd na rezonans magnetyczny r贸wnie偶 okaza艂 si臋 katastrof膮. Zn贸w nie uda艂o si臋 dzi艣 zrobi膰 Joannie badania m贸zgu. Technik powiedzia艂, 偶e musi wiedzie膰, czego u偶y膰. Zadzwoni艂 do lekarza, ale on te偶 nie by艂 pewien. W domu przejrza艂em dokumentacj臋 zdrowotn膮 Joanny i zobaczy艂em liczne wzmianki o tomografii komputerowej. Mamy nowy termin na przysz艂y czwartek i wezm臋 jej zapisy z nami. No c贸偶, 偶ycie w Polsce.

Obejrzeli艣my Inauguracj臋 dzi艣 rano przez YouTube. Uwa偶am, 偶e przem贸wienie Bidena by艂o bardzo dobre i mam tylko nadziej臋, 偶e niekt贸rzy z Trumper贸w go s艂uchali. Przede wszystkim mam nadziej臋, 偶e Partia Demokratyczna zdaje sobie spraw臋, 偶e musi w艂膮czy膰 element progresywny do dyskusji, kt贸re b臋d膮 prowadzi膰 na temat problem贸w. Je艣li stanie si臋 wy艂膮cznie parti膮 "centrow膮", w 2022 roku przegra wybory z Republikanami.  Dzisiejsza wiadomo艣膰, 偶e w jego ekonomicznym panelu doradczym nie ma 偶adnych post臋powc贸w. To musi si臋 zmieni膰. To nie jest dobry znak.

Wiersz m艂odej poetki Amandy Gorman, Youth Poet Laureate of 2017, wyrecytowa艂 pot臋偶ny wiersz na Inauguracj臋. Bardzo mi si臋 podoba艂.

Fractals

Back in the year 2000, I was heavily involved with trying to further my creative abilities but this time in the area of Fractal Art.  Fractal art is a form of algorithmic art created by calculating fractal objects and representing the calculation results as still images, animations, and media.  Fractal art developed from the mid-1980s onwards. It is a genre of computer art and digital art that are part of new media art.

It takes a lot of study of the different algorithms available and software for the computer to manipulate those objects to create the image you want to show. I created several images that I thought were acceptable but the one I was proudest of is the side image of a face.  The image above was the result of my work.  However, another image I created was that of an Easter egg and it is the image I will use this year for my Easter cards instead of using cards made by Jacquie Lawson.

I would have kept working in this art form but once I started my genealogy research it consumed all of my time and I stopped working with fractals. I don't regret it much but, like playing music, it's something I should have kept doing if only as a hobby. Not continuing to play guitar I do regret, very much.

So, it's done. The United States has a new President and the "evil one" is out of the White House after four years of carnage. The majority of Americans, and probably the world, are happy to finally realize it.  Democracy has survived the lies, conspiracy theories, and domestic terrorists. To be sure, the country will still be divided for some time and Biden will not have an easy four years ahead of him. Whether he can bring the nation together again remains to be seen. I don't envy his job. He already has gray hair so that cannot be a telltale sign of his stress.

Again, Joan's test of her brain was not done today. The doctor did not write if it was to be an MRO or a CT scan.

Jeszcze w 2000 roku by艂em mocno zaanga偶owany w pr贸by rozwini臋cia swoich zdolno艣ci tw贸rczych, ale tym razem w obszarze Sztuki Fraktalnej. Jest to gatunek sztuki komputerowej i cyfrowej, kt贸re s膮 cz臋艣ci膮 sztuki nowych medi贸w.

Potrzeba wiele bada艅 nad r贸偶nymi dost臋pnymi algorytmami i oprogramowaniem dla komputera, aby manipulowa膰 tymi obiektami w celu stworzenia obrazu, kt贸ry chcesz pokaza膰. Powy偶szy obrazek by艂 wynikiem mojej pracy.

Wi臋kszo艣膰 Amerykan贸w, i prawdopodobnie 艣wiat, jest szcz臋艣liwa, 偶e w ko艅cu to sobie u艣wiadomi.  Demokracja przetrwa艂a k艂amstwa, teorie spiskowe i wewn臋trznych terroryst贸w. Aby mie膰 pewno艣膰, 偶e kraj b臋dzie jeszcze przez jaki艣 czas podzielony, a Biden nie b臋dzie mia艂 przed sob膮 艂atwych czterech lat. Ma ju偶 siwe w艂osy, wi臋c to nie mo偶e by膰 oznaka jego stresu.

Znowu nie zrobiono dzi艣 Joan testu jej m贸zgu. Technik powiedzia艂, 偶e musi wiedzie膰, czego u偶y膰. Zadzwoni艂 do lekarza, ale te偶 nie by艂 pewien. W domu przejrza艂em akta zdrowia Joan i zobaczy艂em wiele wzmianek o tomografii komputerowej. Mamy nowe spotkanie na przysz艂y czwartek i zabior臋 jej akta ze sob膮.

No seguir tocando la guitarra s铆 me arrepiento, mucho.

As铆 que, est谩 hecho.

Inauguration Day.

Today is the day we have been waiting for, the Inauguration Day of a President. Maybe the Inauguration Day for a new world. It will certainly be a better one than the last four years. As I write this, because of the time difference, it hasn't occurred yet so no one knows what will happen today for sure.  It is also one of the saddest days in American history. 20,000 National Guard and various police departments surround the Capital concerned of reprisals from domestic terrorists who have tried to stop the process.

I have only witnessed something like this the day Martin Luther King was assassinated. I was living in Washington D.C., not far from the White House. Across from our flat was a visible park. Looking out the window, I saw hundreds of military, tanks, and armored personnel carriers parked everywhere. Turning on the news, I learned of his death at the hands of an earlier domestic terrorist. James Earl Ray. There were military checkpoints at every corner. A normally 20-minute drive to work took me 2 1/2 hours to get through all the checkpoints. It was a surrealistic day.

Now the United States faces the same situation, all caused by one person, Donald J. Trump. However, he was not alone. There were and are thousands of citizens and politicians who were complicit in either directly or indirectly helping him.

Today was supposed to be a day of celebration in the nation but instead, it is a day of trepidation. The country is in chaos and the world waits to see what happens next as do Joan and me. This is one day we will watch the news.

Dzisiaj jest dzie艅, na kt贸ry czekali艣my, Dzie艅 Inauguracji Prezydenta. Mo偶e Dzie艅 Inauguracji dla nowego 艣wiata. Na pewno b臋dzie to dzie艅 lepszy ni偶 ostatnie cztery lata. Jest to r贸wnie偶 jeden z najsmutniejszych dni w historii Ameryki. 20.000 Gwardii Narodowej i r贸偶nych wydzia艂贸w policji otaczaj膮 stolic臋 zaniepokojeni odwetem ze strony krajowych terroryst贸w, kt贸rzy pr贸bowali zatrzyma膰 ten proces.

By艂em tylko 艣wiadkiem czego艣 takiego w dniu zamordowania Martina Luthera Kinga. Mieszka艂em w Waszyngtonie, niedaleko Bia艂ego Domu. Po drugiej stronie naszego mieszkania by艂 widoczny park. Patrz膮c przez okno, widzia艂em setki wojskowych, czo艂g贸w i pancernych transporter贸w personelu zaparkowanych wsz臋dzie. W艂膮czaj膮c wiadomo艣ci, dowiedzia艂em si臋 o jego 艣mierci z r膮k wcze艣niejszego krajowego terrorysty. James Earl Ray. Na ka偶dym rogu by艂y wojskowe punkty kontrolne. Normalnie 20-minutowa jazda do pracy zaj臋艂a mi 2 i p贸艂 godziny, aby przej艣膰 przez wszystkie punkty kontrolne. To by艂 surrealistyczny dzie艅.

Ale nie by艂 sam.

S贸lo he sido testigo de algo as铆 el d铆a en que Martin Luther King fue asesinado.

My brother.

It's interesting for me why after my brother died I never had a dream with him in it but now, living in Poland, I've had more than a few. As when living in the United States, never more than 2 days go by when I don't have a thought about him. It's been 46 years since it happened but he is still with me. It was the second event in my life that changed my world. I see him every mealtime. His picture is on the cabinet where we eat each time.  It's just curious why I can have dreams now with him in them. When I do dream of him, I don't want to wake up.

I was always just his "little" brother until he joined the U.S. Navy. During his term of four years, he changed, and so did our relationship. We became closer.  Like me, you could say it made him grow up serving his time in the military. He introduced me to jazz and Jack Kerouac. Two things that influenced my life.

While attending DePaul University to study classical guitar, I put together a jazz program and petitioned the Dean to institute a separate study program for it. Unfortunately, the Dean was unaccepting of such a program. Now, many years later, they have one.

He was a salesman with a great love of music and also a musician. He played bass in a group our cousin Harry Zabinski founded. Harry was a saxophone player. In one of the spare room s in my brother's house, he had a baby grand piano that he was endeavoring to learn how to play before he died.

Acquiring the piano was an interesting story. He saw an ad in a newspaper from a woman whose husband had died and she was giving the piano away for free. However, she lived on the fourth floor of a building, and whoever wanted it had to remove it at their expense. When he read the ad, he called and told her he would come and get it. I wasn't living nearby to help him carry it our bout he made other arrangement and brought it home. One evening when I visited him he was struggling to try to lay a piece of music. He was frustrated. When I looked at the music I say it was composed by Bela Bartok, an important comp/ser of the 20th century. Bartok had a changing attitude toward (and use of) tonality but without the use of the traditional harmonic functions associated with major and minor scales. For that reason, his compositions were not exactly for beginners. I advised my brother to try simpler pieces.

Min臋艂o 46 lat, od kiedy to si臋 sta艂o, ale on nadal jest ze mn膮. To by艂o drugie wydarzenie w moim 偶yciu, kt贸re zmieni艂o m贸j 艣wiat. Widz臋 go w ka偶dym posi艂ku. To po prostu ciekawe, dlaczego mog臋 mie膰 teraz z nim sny. Kiedy 艣ni臋 o nim, nie chc臋 si臋 obudzi膰.

Stali艣my si臋 bli偶ej.  Tak jak ja, mo偶na powiedzie膰, 偶e to sprawi艂o, 偶e dorasta艂 s艂u偶膮c w wojsku. Wprowadzi艂 mnie do jazzu i Jacka Kerouaca. Dwie rzeczy, kt贸re wp艂yn臋艂y na moje 偶ycie.

Ucz臋szczaj膮c na Uniwersytet DePaula, by studiowa膰 gitar臋 klasyczn膮, stworzy艂em program jazzowy i poprosi艂em dziekana o ustanowienie dla niego odr臋bnego programu studi贸w. Teraz, wiele lat p贸藕niej, maj膮 taki program.

By艂 on sprzedawc膮 z wielk膮 mi艂o艣ci膮 do muzyki, a tak偶e muzykiem. Gra艂 na basie w grupie, kt贸r膮 za艂o偶y艂 nasz kuzyn Harry Zabinski. Harry by艂 saksofonist膮. W jednym z wolnych pokoi w domu mojego brata mia艂 ma艂y fortepian, kt贸ry przed 艣mierci膮 stara艂 si臋 nauczy膰 gry.

Nabycie fortepianu by艂o ciekaw膮 histori膮. Mieszka艂a ona jednak na czwartym pi臋trze budynku, a kto chcia艂, musia艂 go usun膮膰 na sw贸j koszt. Nie mieszka艂em w pobli偶u, 偶eby pom贸c mu je zanie艣膰, bo um贸wi艂 si臋 inaczej i przyni贸s艂 je do domu. Pewnego wieczoru, kiedy go odwiedzi艂em, stara艂 si臋 u艂o偶y膰 kawa艂ek muzyki. By艂 sfrustrowany. Bartok mia艂 zmienny stosunek do (i wykorzystanie) tonalno艣ci, ale bez wykorzystania tradycyjnych funkcji harmonicznych zwi膮zanych z dur i mol臋. Poradzi艂em bratu, aby spr贸bowa艂 prostszych utwor贸w.

Me present贸 al jazz y a Jack Kerouac.

Ahora, muchos a帽os despu茅s, tienen uno.

I love my hat.

The hat in the picture was made by me out of rabbit and beaver fur when I lived in the U.P.. The inside liner is an old Army, wool liner worn by tank drivers in winter. Today was a good day to wear it because it was -4C when I went to take the garbage outside to the bin. Even on the coldest days in the U.P.(-20-40F), my head was always warm. It is rare when I wear it here.

With the cold temperature outside and old, wooden window frames in our flat that don't seal well, it's chilly enough inside for Joan to wear long underwear. I have the thermostat set at 23C but now it's at 20C and not getting any higher. We should be in Spain now where it is 20C with the sun.

I was finally able to get money out of the funding for Joan to our PKO bank account. It took a while to figure out the correct process for doing that. It came just in time to pay for Joan's continuing therapy.

Only two more days until the U.S. has a new President. Hallelujah!!

Chapka na zdj臋ciu zosta艂 zrobiony przeze mnie z futra kr贸lika i bobra, kiedy mieszka艂em w U.P. Wewn臋trzna wy艣ci贸艂ka to stara wojskowa, we艂niana wy艣ci贸艂ka noszona zim膮 przez czo艂gist贸w. Dzi艣 by艂 to dobry dzie艅 na noszenie go, bo to by艂o -4C, kiedy poszed艂em zabra膰 艣mieci na zewn膮trz do kosza. Nawet w najzimniejsze dni w U.P.(-20-40F), moja g艂owa by艂a zawsze ciep艂a. Rzadko zdarza si臋, 偶e nosz臋 j膮 tutaj.

Powinni艣my by膰 teraz w Hiszpanii, gdzie jest 20C ze s艂o艅cem.

Troch臋 czasu zaj臋艂o mi ustalenie w艂a艣ciwego procesu, 偶eby to zrobi膰. Przysz艂o w sam膮 por臋, 偶eby zap艂aci膰 za dalsz膮 terapi臋 Joanny.

¡Aleluya!

Poznan Synagogue

In 1940, the last Star of David was removed from the Jewish synagogue in Poznan, and the building was converted into a swimming pool for Nazi Wehrmacht soldiers. The pictures on the right show it before and after the Nazi invasion.

Before World War II, about three million Jews lived in Poland, which was one of the largest diasporas in the world. Shortly after the invasion by Nazi Germany, the Germans launched an organized action to exterminate the Jewish population of Europe and Poland, known as the Holocaust. As a result of this genocide, over 90% of Polish Jews were killed, and 99% of Lithuanian or Latvian Jews. Nearly 6 million people of Jewish origin died worldwide. Apart from the murders, it was common to take property or destroy objects related to Jewish religion, tradition, and culture. An example is the New Synagogue in Pozna艅. Along with the extermination of people, the Holocaust also meant the annihilation of the Jewish world. In the years 1939-1945 the material traces of the Jewish presence were destroyed, e.g. in May 1943 the Germans blew up the building of the Great Synagogue in Warsaw, and churches were set on fire in other cities. Hundreds of historically valuable buildings lay in ruins.

The Christmas tree is still standing. Too lazy today to take it down over the weekend. We like looking at the lights in the evenings. Couple that with snow on the ground now, it still feels like Christmas.

Last night I took melatonin at 01:30 and actually slept until 12:00 today, almost 12 hours. I finally feel rested today.

Dementia.

I'm reading a book, "What Dementia Teaches Us About Love", by author, Nicci Gerrard. It ranges widely, and I think wisely, raising questions about what it is to be human and facing truths too deep for tears. It is helping me now in this world that is hidden to many people. It's filled with stories, both moving and optimistic, from those living with dementia to those planning the end of life. It has 14 chapters dealing with such topics as Facing Up, Getting Older, The Diagnosis, Home. The Late Stages, In The End, Saying Goodbye, and The Carers, about what emotions of their own people have to deal with. That is the chapter I'm reading now.

In the United States, there are 43.5 million Carers of different types, 15.7 million of whom look after someone with dementia. 60% of those Carers are women. Some countries have extensive networks to help with dementia, like the U.S. and Great Britain, and Australia. Some countries have very little support, like Poland. For example, in 2015, the number of people with dementia in Poland was estimated to be between 360,000 and 470,000. That was a 20% rise from 2005.  In Poland, caring for an elderly person with dementia is primarily non-institutional and provided by the closest family members in a home setting. Due to the shrinking care potential of Polish families, there is a growing need for formal forms of support to ensure proper care for elderly individuals with dementia. At present, Poland has a poorly developed system of formal assistance for dependent elderly people and the existing infrastructure of formal care services includes only a small proportion of potential beneficiaries. This is what I have found to be true.

The Carer chapter describes the variety of feelings I have to deal with from love and compassion to hostility and guilt after hostility. I live with a great mix of seething emotions, an army of feelings that collide and clash. Already I've learned one thing I am doing wrong. I asked Joan to start a diary for her daughter that I would send to Karen at the end of the year. I thought it would be good for Karen to better understand what her mother is going through.

In the beginning, Joan agreed to it. She wrote for a few days and then I looked at it. She had thoughts but no longer the ability to write them out. The pages I read did not make sense and I tried to work with Joan to correct them. Continuing, Joan was beginning to dislike the idea. My correcting her made her feel bad that she couldn't say what she wanted to. After reading the first 10 pages of the book I see the problem is mine for not fully understanding the frustration she has is caused by me. Yesterday I suggested a different approach to the diary.  I said I would help her each day by just asking her to tell me what she would like written and I would write it down in a more coherent language. She looked relieved and liked the change.  If this works for her and she is happy with it, we will continue. If not, we can forget writing a diary.

Words do matter now and I must be careful in what or how I say things to her. I always have to make her feel loved and not feel hostility, despair, abandonment, or that she has become a burden. I thought her dementia would be in slow motion but it has progressed a lot in the last two years. Sometimes I feel I don't do enough and sometimes more than I thought I could. Things like cooking meals all the time, 24/7 care of Joan, changing her on a schedule to prevent accidents, and providing physical therapy. All these things take away my own independence, my feeling of self. However, I have no choice but to do them.  I am as trapped in her mind as she is but I will never look for the escape hatch. She has made my life alive, loved me for more than half my life, I see no other path to continue but the one we will walk together.

Czytam ksi膮偶k臋 „Czego Demencja Uczy Nas o Mi艂o艣ci” autorstwa Nicci Gerrard.  M贸wi szeroko i, my艣l臋, m膮drze, stawiaj膮c pytania o to, co to znaczy by膰 cz艂owiekiem i stawia膰 czo艂a bardzo g艂臋bokim prawdom. P贸藕ne stany, Koniec, Po偶egnanie, Opiekunowie. Czyli o tym, z jakimi emocjami musz膮 sobie radzi膰. To jest rozdzia艂, kt贸ry teraz czytam.

W Stanach Zjednoczonych jest 43,5 miliona opiekun贸w chorych r贸偶nych typ贸w, z kt贸rych 15,7 miliona opiekuje si臋 osob膮 z demencj膮.  60% opiekun贸w to kobiety.  Niekt贸re kraje maj膮 rozleg艂e sieci pomocy w demencji, takie jak Stany Zjednoczone, Wielka Brytania i Australia. To wzrost o 20% w stosunku do 2005 r. Obecnie Polska ma s艂abo rozwini臋ty system formalnej pomocy dla niesamodzielnych os贸b starszych, a istniej膮ca infrastruktura formalnych us艂ug opieku艅czych obejmuje tylko niewielki odsetek potencjalnych beneficjent贸w.

呕yj臋 z wielk膮 mieszank膮 kipi膮cych emocji, armi膮 uczu膰, kt贸re zderzaj膮 si臋 i 艣cieraj膮.  Nauczy艂em si臋 ju偶 jednej rzeczy, kt贸r膮 robi臋 藕le. Pomy艣la艂em, 偶e by艂oby dobrze, gdyby Karen lepiej zrozumia艂a, przez co przechodzi jej matka.

Na pocz膮tku Joan si臋 na to zgodzi艂a.  Pisa艂a przez kilka dni, a potem przyjrza艂em si臋 temu.  Mia艂a my艣li, ale nie potrafi艂a ju偶 ich spisa膰.  Strony, kt贸re przeczyta艂em, nie mia艂y sensu i pr贸bowa艂em pracowa膰 z Joan, aby je poprawi膰. Wczoraj zaproponowa艂em inne podej艣cie do dziennika.  Powiedzia艂em, 偶e b臋d臋 jej pomaga艂 ka偶dego dnia, po prostu prosz膮c j膮, aby powiedzia艂a mi, co chcia艂aby napisa膰, i zapisz臋 to w bardziej sp贸jnym j臋zyku.  Poczu艂a ulg臋 i polubi艂a t臋 zmian臋.  Je艣li to zadzia艂a i b臋dzie z tego zadowolona, b臋dziemy kontynuowa膰.  Je艣li nie, mo偶emy zapomnie膰 o pisaniu pami臋tnika.

S艂owa maj膮 teraz znaczenie i musz臋 uwa偶a膰, co lub jak jej m贸wi臋.  Zawsze musz臋 sprawia膰, by czu艂a si臋 kochana i nie czu艂a wrogo艣ci, rozpaczy, opuszczenia lub tego, 偶e sta艂a si臋 ci臋偶arem.

Insurrection Rant?

This is what Trump has caused...................fences around the House of the People, the White House, and now the Capital building. He said he would build a wall, nobody imagined it would be in these two places. Yet, here we are today, the Capital fenced to keep his fanatical supporters away and hundreds of National Guard stationed inside of it to protect it. Still, thousands of Americans support him no matter what happened last week with the insurrection. Even 196 Republicans pledge their fielty to him yet. 6 people died, the country is on the brink of disaster and they are still more concerned with retaining their positions in government than they are about the welfare of American Democracy. Twice he has been impeached, the ONLY President to ever have been. Now, it is up to the Senate to convict him. The Republicans control the Senate, 52-48. The Democrats have to find 27 Republicans on their side of what is right, and necessary, to convict him of the charge of insurrection.  In total, they need 75 YES votes. It is the only way he can never hold a political office again. With Mitch McConnell saying he is in favor of impeachment, can he persuade 26 other Republicans to join him, or are they just too scared of Trump? We won't know until the Senate reconvenes next week.

Once out of office, the New York prosecutors are waiting to file charges. Trump faces two New York state inquiries into whether he misled tax authorities, banks, or business partners. Two women alleging he sexually assaulted them are suing him. Some Democrats are calling for the revival of a federal campaign finance investigation that appeared to end under U.S. Attorney General William Barr.

Now, after 4 years. he has finally made a speech asking his supporters not to cause problems during the week of the inauguration. Finally. He spent the last several month's opening Pandora's box. NOW he is trying to shut the lid. We will see if it is too late. There are more National Guard protecting Washington D.C than there are troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and HE is the reason for it along with his co-conspirators. The Senate must convict him of insurrection and ban him for life of ever holding a political office again.

To jest to, co Trump spowodowa艂...................fences wok贸艂 Domu Ludzi, Bia艂y Dom, a teraz budynek Stolicy. Powiedzia艂, 偶e zbuduje mur, nikt nie wyobra偶a艂 sobie, 偶e b臋dzie w tych dw贸ch miejscach. Ale oto jeste艣my dzisiaj, Stolica jest ogrodzona, by trzyma膰 z dala swoich fanatycznych zwolennik贸w, a setki Gwardii Narodowej stacjonuje w niej, by j膮 chroni膰. Nawet 196 republikan贸w przysi臋ga mu jeszcze swoj膮 wierno艣膰. Dwukrotnie zosta艂 zwolniony z urz臋du, jest TYLKO prezydentem, kt贸rym kiedykolwiek by艂. Teraz do Senatu nale偶y skazanie go. Republikanie kontroluj膮 Senat, 52-48.

Trump stoi przed dwoma dochodzeniami w stanie Nowy Jork w sprawie, czy wprowadzi艂 w b艂膮d w艂adze podatkowe, banki, czy partner贸w biznesowych. Dwie kobiety twierdz膮ce, 偶e napad艂 na nich seksualnie, pozywaj膮 go.

Ostatnie kilka miesi臋cy sp臋dzi艂 na otwarciu puszki Pandory. Teraz pr贸buje zamkn膮膰 pokryw臋. Senat musi skaza膰 go za powstanie i zakaza膰 mu pe艂nienia funkcji politycznych na ca艂e 偶ycie.

Leggings

We were up at  8:00 today, unusual for Joan. It was a blood test day. Because of snow last night, it was a little difficult getting her to the car so I drove it on the sidewalk in front of the entrance door. First I carried the wheelchair down the stairs and then I helped her go down.

At the clinic, I had to check in first, then get Joan out of the car, into the wheelchair, and to the waiting area for the test. There were 5 people ahead of her but it didn't take too long for the event. With the results available online, I can read them on Monday.

Again, with snow on the ground, it reminded me of the U.P. of Michigan. We always had lots of snow. Usually. with the depth of the snow, my pants from below the knee were damp when walking outside my house or cross-country skiing. That lasted until I discovered how to make leggings.

I had some deer hide. so I cut it up to wrap around my legs from below the knee, overlapping my Sorrel winter boots. From some old clothing I had, I put a zipper in each one of them. On the bottom of each, I used some elastic straps that went under the boots to keep them down. On the top, 2 curtain rings were attached to the tops to pull them up. The deer hide kept the pants from getting wet. They worked great to keep the snow off my legs.

Eventually, in St. Vinnies second-hand store, I found a very old pair of red plaid logger's pants that were made of thick wool. It was so thick that I could actually sit in the snow without feeling the cold at all. St. Vinnies was the place where I found those used Pendelton shirts and bought 14 of them for $2 dollars each. Joan still has some of them,, 30 years later, that she wears. I was quite a picture wearing the fur hat I made from rabbit and beaver, mittens made from deerskin, a coat filled with goose down, the red plaid pants, leggings,  and my Sorrel botts that were warm to 60 degrees below zero. They all served me well and I still have the hat here in Poland. There has been little need in winters here in Poland to wear the hat.

To by艂 dzie艅 bada艅 krwi. Ze wzgl臋du na 艣nieg zesz艂ej nocy, by艂o troch臋 trudno dosta膰 j膮 do samochodu, wi臋c pojecha艂am ni膮 chodnikiem przed drzwiami wej艣ciowymi.

W klinice musia艂em si臋 najpierw zameldowa膰, a nast臋pnie wyprowadzi膰 Joan z samochodu, na w贸zek inwalidzki i do poczekalni na badanie. Przed ni膮 by艂o 5 os贸b, ale nie trwa艂o to zbyt d艂ugo. Z wynikami dost臋pnymi online, mog臋 je przeczyta膰 w poniedzia艂ek.

Zawsze mieli艣my du偶o 艣niegu. Zazwyczaj.

Na g贸rze, 2 karnisze by艂y przymocowane do top贸w, aby je podci膮gn膮膰. Sk贸ra jelenia powstrzymywa艂a spodnie przed zamoczeniem. 艢wietnie si臋 spisa艂y, trzymaj膮c 艣nieg z dala od moich n贸g.

Fue un d铆a de an谩lisis de sangre.

Ostatecznie, w sklepie z u偶ywan膮 odzie偶膮 St. Vinnies znalaz艂em bardzo star膮 par臋 czerwonych spodni z grubej we艂ny. Joan nadal ma niekt贸re z nich, 30 lat p贸藕niej, kt贸re nosi. Mia艂am pi臋kny obrazek w futrzanym kapeluszu, kt贸ry zrobi艂am z kr贸lika i bobra, r臋kawice ze sk贸ry jelenia, p艂aszcz wype艂niony g臋sim puchem, czerwone spodnie w krat臋, legginsy i moje butelki Sorrel, kt贸re by艂y ciep艂e do 60 stopni poni偶ej zera. Wszystkie dobrze mi s艂u偶y艂y i mam jeszcze kapelusz tutaj w Polsce. Zim膮 w Polsce nie by艂o wielkiej potrzeby, aby nosi膰 ten kapelusz.

Winter Wonderland.

It was this morning. After 5 hours of sleep, I awoke at 6:30 to get ready to do the weekly shopping.  Joan was still sleeping so I was confident I would return before she was awake. Thanks to the snowfall last night, the drive to Carrefour was slow but beautiful All of the trees and bushes were covered in snow and I thought it would be a great time to walk in the nearby woods. Of course, that wasn't possible. But it was still a nice drive with few people on the road. If it snows again tonight, I will get up early and go for that walk before Joan wakes up.

Being out of some basic things like dish soap, detergent for clothes, paper towels, and toilet paper, the cost of this week's shopping was high, 225 PLN($61). Since we have been here, 13 1/2 years, the cost of food has doubled.  If only our income had, it wouldn't be so bad.

Last night I made a new dinner, Orange Marmalade Chicken. Two chicken breasts were cut up into small pieces,, covered with mixed egg yolk, then bread crumbs, lightly fried in a skillet until a little golden. and then put into a large casserole dish. I made a sauce of rice wine vinegar, soy sauce, pumpkin oil, brown sugar, and marmalade. That was put on top of the chicken pieces and baked in the oven. Along with the chicken I made a salad. The dinner was approved by Joan. :-)

Tomorrow I have to take Joan out in the snow to a clinic for a blood test. The results are necessary before her MRI next Tuesday night.

To by艂o dzi艣 rano. Joan nadal spa艂a, wi臋c by艂em pewien, 偶e wr贸c臋, zanim si臋 obudzi. Dzi臋ki wczorajszym opadom 艣niegu jazda do Carrefour by艂a powolna, ale pi臋kna. Wszystkie drzewa i krzewy by艂y pokryte 艣niegiem i pomy艣la艂em, 偶e to 艣wietny czas na spacer po pobliskich lasach. Oczywi艣cie to nie by艂o mo偶liwe. Odk膮d jeste艣my tu 13 i p贸艂 roku, koszt jedzenia podwoi艂 si臋. Zrobi艂am sos z octu ry偶owego, sosu sojowego, oliwy z dyni, br膮zowego cukru i marmolady. To zosta艂o umieszczone na kawa艂kach kurczaka i upieczone w piekarniku. Wraz z kurczakiem zrobi艂am sa艂atk臋. Kolacja zosta艂a zatwierdzona przez Joan. :-) Jutro musz臋 zabra膰 Joan na 艣nieg do kliniki na badanie krwi. Wyniki s膮 konieczne przed jej rezonansem magnetycznym w nast臋pny wtorek wieczorem.

Si solo tuvieran nuestros ingresos, no ser铆a tan malo.
