Boy Scouts

More than a half-century ago(WOW!), I was a member of the Boy Scouts of America. We had meetings once a week in the project where I grew up./ Living in the U.S. or other countries where they have a similar organization you know what it's all about. I used to like very much the different camping trips that were planned for my group. One I particularly like was a winter event. It was actually a competition between several groups. It was called the Klondike Derby.

Like the Iditarod Race in Alaska, it required a sled pulled by dogs. However, in this race, the dogs we other members of a group. My cousin Harry and I took part in such a race. The object was not just a race to the finish, it was a planned route through a forest at some campsite for the weekend. You arrived on Friday to spend the night in a bunkhouse, Saturday was the race, and Sunday you returned home. It was different than just a race to the finish.

Before the race, however, you had to build the sled out of wood. Along the route at different points, there were tasks that the group had to perform.
