Cancelled.

A category 4 hurricane is heading for Florida where Orange Head has his Mar A Logo resort so he is canceling his trip to Poland to commemorate the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany on September 1, 1939. He said it was because he is concerned about the people of the United States in the path of the hurricane.

I talked with the immigration helpline today about the problem of Joan's permit/zameldowania. They said I needed to go back to Libelta street with the original Decision paper stating that she had been given long-term residency here as a resident of the European Union. They said that it should take care of the problem. I will do it but take someone with me who speaks Polish to explain it to them. Thankfully, I keep all of the documents we have received since we have been here.

This hot weather will continue until Monday when it will drop down to 21C. It will be a welcomed relief from this heat. It's not really hot like 40C but anything above 25C is uncomfortable for me.

Photoshopped?

The mild heat wave continues here at least until Saturday. Last night we had a downpour of rain for about 1/2 and then it passed. Today it's back to a dry day, cloudy and humid.

Speaking of weather, I saw some rather freakish pictures today taken near Lake Superior where we used to live in Michigan. The clouds above the lake look like they are on fire. I've never seen anything like that before, unless the picture was photoshopped.

We went to meet with Zbyszek today but realized that his daughter and grandson had arrived from Bulgaria so he wouldn't be there. Of course, the realization didn't take place until we came back home and called him to find out why he didn't appear.

We're currently watching a Netflix series, The Loudest Voice. It's a very interesting story about how the TV channel, Fox News, got started and who was the main man behind it all. Every channel has its own bias and it is easy to see where this one originated from and how it spread throughout the country. Roger Ailes, Fox News Founder Who Was Forced Out by Scandal, Died at 7, May 2017.

Łagodna fala upałów trwa, przynajmniej do soboty.

Mówiąc o pogodzie, to dzisiaj widziałem kilka dziwnych zdjęć zrobionych w pobliżu jeziora Superior, gdzie mieszkaliśmy w Michigan.

Obecnie oglądamy serial Netflix, The Loudest Voice.

Dare I?

Dare I mention the 2 insanities of the last 4 days. The first being the President of the United States choosing to be absent from the climate change meeting of the G7 and the second, the President of Brazil refusing 22 million dollars in helping to fight the fires in the Amazon forest. Both of these two should be locked away in mental institutions. But enough about lunatics of the world.

Radek and I had our usual meeting today. He leaves next week on Thursday for another Tango experience and then in October a visit to the U.S. We spent the usual first hour speaking in English and then switched to Spanish, this time discussing the use of conditionals in the Spanish language. It will take a little time to get used to this.

For dinner tonight Joan is preparing chicken chorizo and basmati rice.  The temperature outside is high, 33C, so we have the kitchen window open to feel the breeze now that the sun is on the other side of the building. This warm weather is forecasted to stay with us for one week.

Our friend, Małgorzata, gave Joan a bottle of pumpkin seed oil that she uses to make salad dressings. She says the taste is very unique and she likes it very much. She combines the oil with French mustard and honey. Joan will try it.

Nasza przyjaciółka, Małgorzata, dała Joan butelkę oleju z pestek dyni, którego używa do robienia sosów sałatkowych. Łączy olej z musztardą francuską i miodem. Joan spróbuje.

Growing up.

Amazing how the neighbor's children I first saw as babies are now playing soccer behind our complex and Zuzanna is a tall as Joan. There has been very little change in Joan and I but these kids are growing like crazy. Some of the other ones I have known are in university and some have finished and in the workforce. Time really does fly when you get older.

My friend, Michał, just returned from a trip to his ancestral home around Zamość with his son. He showed me a lot of pictures. We visited there some years ago but not to the exact place where he came from. Most of his ancestors are buried in the cemetery in Zamość.

He took several pictures of the old Jewish cemetery and it was interesting to see the neglect of this place. Now there are few Jewish people to care for it. There were all murdered by the Nazis.

Before the war, nearly 12 thousand Jews lived in Zamość. About 2/3 of them left Zamość in 1939 with Soviet Troops and the rest were murdered in an extermination camp in Belzec. located 40 km from Zamość. The Rotunda, where 8 thousand people were murdered, is now a mausoleum of war victims from the Zamość Region.

We spent the day outside, walking to see the "fields of gold" again. The aroma of the goldenrod is overwhelming now. Then we walked down to the little park by the school and just sat for a while talking about the things we need to do this week. It was just too nice to go home but Joan wanted to prepare tonight's dinner, a fruit salad before she Skyped with her daughter.

Mój przyjaciel Michał właśnie wrócił z synem do wycieczki do rodzinnego domu w okolicy Zamościa.

Spędziliśmy dzień na zewnątrz, chodząc znów, by zobaczyć „złote pola”.

Beautiful day.

Another beautiful day so after a morning conversation with a friend Joan and I went to sit in the Plaza(Plac Wolności), have a cup of coffee and people watch. There was a little Italian festival going on in some white booths but not many people were in attendance,

After sitting there for 2 hours we took a stroll to the rynek, actually to the Fripp Record & CD store to see if we could buy a CD by Italian accordionist Fausto Beccalossi. Unfortunately, the owner had never heard of him so no CD was available. I guess I will have to search online. This man gives a whole new meaning to the name accordion player.

We walked around the rynek and came upon a group playing some traditional music from the south and stopped to listen for a while,

Continuing on, we were pleasantly surprised to see that our old Room 55 had new owners and it is now called "Just Friends". It's curious that they would open so late in the season and then have to close the outside in a month or two. We will have to go back and see what kind of menu they offer.

Będziemy musieli wrócić i zobaczyć, jakie oferują menu.

Guinea pig.

We went to have Joan's fingerprints taken, they take only the index fingers using a scanner, no more ink blotters. The young man accepting the documents was very cordial, looked over all of them and said only the residence permit was a problem because it had expired already.  Even though our rental contract is good until August 2020, the residence permit expiration date for Joan was the date of her E.U. residence permit. I feel like a guinea pig on the wheel. Joan can't proceed to get her E.U. resident card because she can't get the zameldownia(place of residence) and she can't get the zameldowania because she doesn't have a resident card. Somehow I have to get this fixed. Needless to say, it was a VERY frustrating morning.

The bright side was coming home and seeing the "fields of gold" shining brilliantly in full shine. It lifted my spirits enough to do a little house cleaning, go for a walk and listen to some music. Joan di some clothes washing and then started preparing tonights dinner, Cobb salad.

It seems that the 3rd Democratic Presidential debate is nearing a 2 night affair again. 10 have qualified but with 1 week left to qualify, 3 more candidates are close. If  that happens, the debates will take place on September 12th and 13th.

However, CNN is devoting the evening of Sept. 4 to the climate crisis. Eight of the Democratic candidates initially accepted CNN's invitation to discuss this critically important issue: former Vice President Joe Biden; Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey; South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg; Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota; former Rep. Beto O'Rourke of Texas; Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont; Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts; and businessman Andrew Yang.

Sen. Kamala Harris of California initially declined CNN's invitation, citing a scheduling conflict. But her campaign informed CNN on Tuesday morning that the senator would participate. The town hall will air live on CNN platforms around the world. For me, this debate is more important. The Presidential debate will have only 1 question about climate change with each candidate having only 2 minutes to respond.

Jakoś muszę to naprawić.

Jasna strona wracała do domu i widziała „złote pola” lśniące w pełnym blasku. Podniosło mnie to na duchu, aby zrobić porządki w domu, iść na spacer i posłuchać muzyki. Joan di trochę prania, a potem zaczęła przygotowywać dzisiejszy obiad, sałatka Cobb.

Ośmiu kandydatów demokratycznych początkowo zaakceptowało zaproszenie CNN do omówienia tej niezwykle ważnej kwestii: były wiceprezydent Joe Biden; Senator Cory Booker z New Jersey; South Bend, Indiana, burmistrz Pete Buttigieg; Senator Amy Klobuchar z Minnesoty; były przedstawiciel Beto O'Rourke z Teksasu; Senator Bernie Sanders z Vermont; Senator Elizabeth Warren z Massachusetts; i biznesmen Andrew Yang.

Shocker.

A little shocking at the store today for food shopping...(177 PLN $45). We didn't buy anything unusual or out of the ordinary, just the normal menu for the week. Food prices have taken a jump this week, especially in the fruit department. Yes, we bought 2 large bottles of water but that was only 7 PLN but even the price of chicken was higher.

The morning was spent filling out the new form for Joan's renewal permit. It was only 8 pages compared to 12 in the 1st form so there were fewer documents required, actually only 3. Tomorrow morning we will submit them when she is having her fingerprints taken at 10:15. The new application fee was 50 PLN.

The next election in Poland will be on Sunday, October 13th. I think they have the right idea making the election day on the weekend instead of on a workday. It will be a Parliamentary election. All 460 members of the Sejm and 100 senators will be elected. There is no doubt that PiS candidates will be the most victorious The vast majority of people in Poland support them and only 3 cities are in opposition. Opposing parties have little chance of winning.

Trochę szokujące dziś w sklepie dla zakupów spożywczych ... (177 45 PLN).

To będą wybory parlamentarne. Wszyscy 460 posłów do Sejmu i 100 senatorów zostaną wybrani.

What's in a name?

Just by luck, I solved a question Joan has had for some time. Why is one of her favorite salads called a "Cobb" salad? The answer is, in the 1950s in Hollywood, one of the most famous restaurants was the Brown Derby. It was a  place where many actors and actresses ate. The owner of the restaurant was Howard Cobb. The salad was named for him.

My driver's license medical exam went as expected, just medical questions and an eye chart reading. Because of my age and having tremors, he only passed me for a 2-year license. I've had these tremors for 40 years but this doctor seemed to think in 2 years they might be too bad for me to drive. He was not a neurologist. He is a dermatologist. The problem is he doesn't know the difference between Benign Essential Tremor and Parkinson's disease. He spoke very little English so there was no point in trying to explain the difference. As soon as a person sees someone who's head or hands may shake, they think Parkinson's. However, I've been dealing with that for many years already.

I tried printing Joan's residence permit application but the printer ran out of toner so I went to buy a new, black ink cartridge(140 PLN $36). Back at home, I put it in but still, it wouldn't print. I called the place where I bought it, Cartridge Poznań, and they said bring it back and they would give me another one. I suggested I could also bring the printer and they agreed. At the shop, they tried printing but got the same result, none. They asked if I could wait 10 minutes while they checked out the printer and returned 10 minutes later. Pushing the print button, everything worked perfectly. The problem, as the told me, was the paper roller was dirty and would not feed the paper into the printer, therefore it would not print. The charge for the cleaning of the roller was 0 PLN. They were happy to be of quick service and thanked me for being a customer. I have been for some years and will continue to be so.

My Hungarian.

Looking at the picture above of my beautiful wife, there is no doubt she is of Hungarian descent. It was a "secret" kept from her for most of her life until I started researching her family history. Strange how some parents and grandparents kept their past away from the younger generation  My mother did not even know where her own mother and father were born.

I called to see what was happening with Joan's new residence permit only to be informed she needs a completely different application submitted. They said they sent us a letter about it but we never received it. I think it should have been sent with a signature of receipt required but it wasn't. So, now we have a new form to fill out and it has to be submitted by Friday. On that day she also has to have her fingerprints taken. This is what they call the automatic renewal process.

It may be too early to say but I think summer is over. The colors of Autumn are slowly creeping out and the temperature remains in the mid 20C's.

Mamy teraz nowy formularz do wypełnienia i należy go przesłać do piątku.

Miss it.

I really miss playing music. It was part of my life for many years. The time spent in university music school opened up a whole new world to me, mostly from the classical side of music. I always loved jazz so I was well versed in that but my background in classical was sketchy. Yes, I played the typical classical guitar pieces and knew Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, Stravinsky, and others but it wasn't until school that I really had to study the history of the music. Now, I just listen everyday. One of my favorite "new" composers is Arvo Part from Estonia. Then there were the composers who took music to the extreme like Karlheinz Stockhausen, Krzysztof  Penderecki, and Stravinsky.

I'm happy to see granddaughter Nikki so involved with music now an well as her brother, Joseph. She already plays the electric and classical guitar, bass and Piano. Last week she bought a drum set and is determined to learn how to play it.

Joseph has become more involved with the piano and is now teaching piano part-time while he attends college. If accepted he will be going to the University of Colorado this year. While he was with us the year in Granada he said he wanted to go to school there but I knew it was only a vacation fascination with Granada.

Quiet day.

A quiet, overcast day of rest with nothing much to do except a walk outside.

Cichy, pochmurny dzień odpoczynku, z niczym więcej niż spacerkiem na zewnątrz.

Field of Gold.

Coming home this afternoon after spending time in the center we couldn't help but remember the two beautiful purple fields we first saw as we drove up to our future complex. The purple has been gone for some years now, replaced in the autumn by goldenrod in brilliant yellow color when in full bloom and the sun is shining. Today it was overcast but the sun still managed to brighten the goldenrod. Unfortunately, from the beautiful scenery point of view, the field on the left of the entrance road was sold and now many new flats have taken the place of the goldenrod. Of course, housing is needed, so it was inevitable, especially since this is a good location in proximity to the center. The field on the right side is partially sold closer to the complex and already flats are under construction.  The sign at the other end already gives new notification of new flats to be built so this goldenrod field may only be enjoyable for another year or two. We will enjoy it while we can.

Graduation Congratulations to Gillian Frederick, daughter of Allison and Greg Frederick, Joan's cousin. She graduated from the University of Oregon, School of Music and Dance. She is a violinist.

Ukończyła Universitet z Oregonu, Szkoła Muzyka i Tańca. Ona jest skrzypaczką.

3

Since my last posting about the March on Washinton, I have received 3 messages saying my blog is now too political, that I have no right to voice my opinions about 2 different governments, that I live in one country but criticize the one I came from, that I'm a hypocrite, a user, and that as a result, they will no longer read my blog. I agree that I am writing too much political material lately but it is difficult to hold back when so many things anger me. 2 of those who wrote have only written once or twice before in 12 years and those were also criticisms so I don't feel any great loss there.

On the bright side, it was shopping day today, delayed from yesterday because of the holiday. we spent 149 PLN($38). Tonight Joan is preparing creamy pasta salad for dinner.

I passed 2 more of the driver's tests with scores of 30 and 31. I have a doctor's appointment next Wednesday at 10:00 for my "official" medical exam. Once I have it I can schedule a date to take the test.

Zdałem jeszcze 2 testy kierowców z wynikiem 30 i 31.

Sorry.

Yes, sorry but I have to write this, mainly for my American readers in the U.S.

For the last 2 1/2 years, you and I have written so many comments that have had NO effect at stopping the machine in Washington D.C. We've expressed our disgust with the President and certain politicians to no avail. The list of grievances is longer than it was against King George when the fight for Independence began. It is time for another fight for Independence from another tyrannical leader, this time, our own. It begins on Saturday, September 21, 2019. It is called "We The People" March in Washington D.C. The time to be there is 11:00. The starting point is Freedom Plaza, 13th and Pennysylvania AvenueNW. But it should not be only in Washington D.C. It should occur simultaneously in every town and city in the U.S. where people want to take back America. It won't happen without your efforts. Someone has to start to organize it now in your town. Have you FINALLY had enough and are willing to put into action, peacefully, by organizing a march in your town? Make no mistake, the opponent has his supporters who have not faltered through everything he has done. It will take thousands of people all across America to show that WE are the majority and this COULD BE the beginning. The Minute Men had their time in history. Will you have yours or will you remain in the silent majority? T.B.A.Take Back America.

It's a holiday today, a beautiful day of weather. We sat outside of Empik watching people and 3 men came and sat at a table next to us. They were waiting for a waiter. I overheard them speaking Spanish so I went to them and said, "Perdoname, pero es necesario ir a la mujer en el mostrador"(Excuse me but it is necessary to go to the woman at the counter). They understood me perfectly and thanked me for telling them. I was so happy I could communicate with them properly and they understood. I am making progress in Spanish.

Jest nazywany Marsz – My Ludzie. Ktoś musi teraz zacząć to organizować w twoim mieście. Minute Men mieli swój czas w historii. Czy będziesz mieć swoją minutę, czy pozostaniesz w cichej większości. T.B.A. Odzyskać Amerykę.

To dziś święto, piękny dzień pogody.

Milonga.

Back to the Consulates office today with my "Official" birth registry certificate in Poland. The counselor said she would meet with the head of the civil registry to see what the problem is with the registration. She does not normally work with such things so it is nice of her to go out of her way to try and help us. She has always been very helpful to us since we arrived here 12 years ago.

I had a meeting today with Radek. He goes today to Berlin for a milonga. Milonga is an event where Argentine tango is danced. The venue dedicated to milongas may also be called "milonga". People who frequently go to milongas may be called milongueros.
The music played is mainly tangovals and milonga. Most milongas are held on a regular basis (usually weekly), and they often begin with dancing classes and sometimes demonstration dances. Usually, three to five songs of a kind are played in a row (this is called tanda) followed by a short musical break (called cortina) to clear the dance floor and facilitate partner changes. There are a number of informal rules that dictate how dancers should choose their dancing partners and navigate the floor.
When Joan and I were in Croatia some years ago we watched the milonga in a public square for about an hour. It was interesting to watch the dancers perform and see how they used eye contact to attract a dancing partner. If the one they were looking at looked away, it meant no.

Wracam dziś do biura konsulatu z moim „oficjalnym” aktem urodzenia w Polsce.

Odtwarzana muzyka to głównie tango, vals i milonga.

Always.

I made the mistake of turning on the TV this morning and after 5 minutes of watching the news in the U.S. of the latest government fiascos, I started getting depressed so I quickly turned it off.

It was already starting to be a nice day so I asked Joan if she wanted to go outside for a walk and she said yes. We went back to look at the goldenrod field in full sunlight, a beautiful sight to behold. At the rate they are building new apartment complexes here, that field will not be with us much longer. Soon some corporation will buy it and start the building process.

From there we walked into the forest but it is a little difficult now for Joan to traverse paths that are not flat and have obstacles in the way such as tree limbs. We didn't go too far before we turned around and returned to the flat surfaces of a sidewalk. The sidewalk we chose goes all the way around the newest apartments and took us about 45 minutes to return home. We still didn't want to be indoors so we went to Empik for coffee.

Sitting there, watching the clouds slowly pass over the blue sky, we looked back a little at the years we have had together but only the good ones. We've been lucky to have traveled to many states and, now in Europe, to many countries. Together we have survived a few major health problems, met a lot of very nice people, ate a lot of very good cuisines, had the good fortune to spend the last 2 winters in Spain, usually have the same opinions on a subject and points of view and always.....have been in love with each other from the beginning. We only look forward, we don't look back usually.

Włączając dziś rano telewizor popełniłem błąd i po 5 minutach oglądania wiadomości z USA o najnowszych rządowych fiaskach, zacząłem popadać w depresję, więc szybko go wyłączyłem.

Wróciliśmy, by spojrzeć na pole nawłoci w pełnym słońcu, piękny widok do oglądania. Wkrótce jakaś korporacja go kupi i rozpocznie budowę.

Ridiculous!

We started off our anniversary visiting the U.S. Consulate to complain about the problems we are having with Civil Registry getting Joan's documents accepted. I'm at the point that I had to try something different. She tried to think about what she could do but said she had no influence over them. She did call them and they said Poland did not recognize Joan's divorce to her first husband.  So, I think if they didn't recognize her divorce how can they recognize our marriage. It is all so confusing. Do they not recognize the divorce because she was not married in Poland? Should they have flown to Poland to get married thinking they would later get divorced? What kind of logic is that? Is that ridiculous or what? Again, I repeat an Ethiopian goalie, with no ties to Poland, gets citizenship in 3 days just because the National Soccer team wants him on the team. Here I am, with documented proof of bloodline Polish ancestry back to 1750 and 1 1/2 years later I am still trying to make an application for citizenship.

After that visit, we needed to calm down so we sat in front of Empik for a coffee and enjoyed the nice weather. On the way home, we stopped at Kuchnia Libanska and I arranged dinner tonight for us.

At 19:00 we were at the restaurant, the only people there. We had already looked at the menu online so we knew what we wanted. Joan order a Lebanese chicken wrap, water and a glass of Tblisi red wine. I ordered  2 pieces of meat grilled on a stick, one lamb and one beef with vegetables and Lebanese bread. I also ordered a drink called Laziza, non-alcoholic not knowing exactly what it was but made from raspberries. When it came it looked like beer but tasted like raspberries. It also came in blueberry and peach flavor. It was very good. After dinner was over we ordered one baclava and it was good we did because it was big enough for two people. The food was excellent and I would recommend this restaurant if you are in Poznan and would like to sample a different cuisine.

O 19:00 byliśmy w restauracji, jedyni ludzie tam. Obejrzeliśmy już menu online, więc wiedzieliśmy, czego chcemy. Joan zamów libańskie opakowanie z kurczaka, wodę i kieliszek czerwonego wina Tblisi.

Goldenrod.

"You can't see the forest for the trees". There is an expression I have used often but yesterday I felt it. Driving home, I thought it would be great to see a whole field of Goldenrod in bloom. I turned the corner on the main road to our complex and realized on the right side there it was. I've been so busy looking at one or two plants I didn't see the whole field behind them. Today, on our way to Jeżyce, I took pictures of that field. It's beautiful.

We did go to Jeżyce and walk around taking pictures of different buildings, old and new. It's not hard to tell the difference, even in the old buildings that have been renovated and painted. This area is booming now after years of neglect. The old sidewalks where you could easily trip are being replaced with new tiles, more cafes have opened and young people are moving there.

Chodziliśmy do Jeżyce i spacerowaliśmy, robiąc zdjęcia różnych budynków, starych i nowych.

Another walk.

A picture is worth a thousand words. For those of you who still doubt what is happening, just look at the picture above and tell me this is the normal cycle of climate. I don't need to write a thousand words to explain it.

Here in Poznań, it was another nice day and we went, again, to the center for a walk.  We have made these walks many times, looking at the same buildings but it's the exercise that is the important thing. I am resolved to go to a different part of the city next time, Jeżyce. It is a growing part of the city and we have not spent much time there. I only go to the market there to buy duck breasts on special occasions. Cousin Magda lives there and we have visited her once in her flat a few years ago. I bought her the book, Tales of The Alhambra, in Spanish but I don't know if she ever read it. I love that book. I've read it several times and it always takes me back in time to when I was 18 and saw the Alhambra for the first time, without gates to pay to enter, without much restoration done and in the years of Franco. Common people were living in the apartments, clothes were hanging from the windows and children were playing in the gardens and by the fountains.  Now, of course, it looks much better and costs much more to enter but it is worth the price to see it. The architecture is spectacular, except for the palace of the French Charles.

Postanowiłem następnym razem pojechać do innej części miasta, Jeżyce. Mieszka tam kuzynka Magda i kilka lat temu odwiedziliśmy ją w jej mieszkaniu. Kupiłem jej książkę „Tales of The Alhambra” po hiszpańsku, ale nie wiem, czy ją kiedykolwiek przeczytała. Kocham tę książkę. Przeczytałem go kilka razy i zawsze zabiera mnie to w przeszłość, kiedy miałem 18 lat i po raz pierwszy zobaczyłem Alhambrę, bez bramek do wejścia, bez wielu renowacji i w latach Franco. Teraz oczywiście wygląda o wiele lepiej i kosztuje o wiele więcej, ale warto go zobaczyć. Architektura jest spektakularna, z wyjątkiem pałacu francuskiego Karola.

Good morning!

Today I experimented with the blender and blended 2 tomatoes on the slowest speed. It came out just like the mixture in Spain. I went to Chata Polska, bought 2 long, cheese buns, brought them home, cut them in half, toasted them, dripped olive oil on them, put on the tomato mixture, a little salt and served them to Joan for breakfast. All we needed was the view of the sea in front of us so I put a video of the beach in Santiago with sound on our large screen TV. It was a good breakfast morning. :-)

I passed another practice test, this time with a score of 32, no mistakes.

Spent a nice couple of hours on this beautiful day sitting in Plac Wolności watching people go by, talking with Joan and enjoying the afternoon. There was one little girl about 3 years old trying to run all over the place while her 5 years old sister held her hand. It was amusing to see them running together.  Then there were the 3 middle-aged men on the bench, inebriated, passing around 1 bottle of beer. One of them tried to stand up but couldn't quite get up. Several times people passed around the Plac on those electric scooters that are for rent now all over the city.  In some places, there are even motor scooters available. We always sit in a spot that gives us a full view of the Plac and the ugly fountain at the opposite end of it. The fountain has a very modern design but we very much dislike it. It doesn't seem to fit in with the rest of the architecture surrounding it. We have the same feeling for the small shopping center built a few years ago just up the street from the fountain.

The Newsroom.

Today is a shopping day, at the check-out counter the lady complimented me on the Eco-bags we used for the fruits we purchased instead of plastic bags. She asked where we got them so I told her about the internet address. It's the first time someone complimented us on using the bags. It felt good.
The cost of shopping today was 151 PLN($39). Joan was already up, dressed and had breakfast so we went shopping at 11:00.

We've been watching a TV series, The Newsroom". It's a series about a news company and the director that decides it's time to stop being an entertainment source and actually tell the news like it was done years ago by people like Edward R. Murrow, Walter Cronkite, and Dan Rather. What is interesting is to see how the money people try to sabotage the idea in fear of losing advertisers but they persist. It's from 2012 and lasted only 3 years on HBO. If you have HBO and can find it, it is worth watching, I think. It is very relevant today.

I actually slept until 9:30 this morning, a miracle. Lately, I have been staying up until 2AM and then waking up, automatically, about 6:30am. Joan goes to bed about 11:30 and I stay up taking practice driving exams, doing a  Spanish lesson or 2 and listening to a Polish podcast. Last night I passed 2 more exams.

Oglądamy serial telewizyjny „The Newsroom”. Jeśli masz HBO i możesz go znaleźć znajdź , to myślę, że warto  obejrzeć.

2 rights

So, I will get the bad news out of the way first. Polish food prices will likely keep accelerating given no price declines in the summertime despite seasonally higher production and no prospects for stabilization of labor costs, which have become the second key driver along with energy costs. I think those receiving the 500+ program will see it being eaten up by higher food and energy costs.

On the brighter side, the weather continues to be good for the next 4 days, 28, 24, 25, 29C. Another good day for a walk but we had a meeting with Zbyszek at 15:00 but after a conversation with Lila and then studying together, we didn't go out until the meeting time.

Z and I got into a discussion about a building in the Rynek I referred to as the Mielzyński Palace but he said it was only an old Hotel from what he remembers. He said it was impossible to be a palace from the way it looked, only a building occupying one block and with many windows.   I knew I didn't just make up the story of it being a former palace but couldn't remember my source at the moment. Returning home, I searched the internet and found, at one time, there was a  palace built in the years 1795-1798 as a result of the reconstruction of a tenement house purchased in 1772 by Maksymilian Mielżyński. However, already in 1800, the building was rebuilt into a tenement house. The palace was completely destroyed during the fighting in 1945. It was rebuilt in the classical style in the years 1954-1957 and later became a hotel. So, both of us were right.

Similarities.

Lately, it seems that Radek and I spend our English time talking about the similarities between Poland and the U.S. It starts right from the leaders, through the government, attitudes, and people. It's really uncanny. The only difference is one leader is in the forefront and the other in the background. You can guess which is which.

Another nice day to be outside so after my time with Radek, Joan and I walked around the neighborhood without seeing any new buildings so no new pictures to be taken. The wheelchair I brought from Spain remains in the back of the car, unused as of yet. A good thing.

More success last night with the driver's tests, 2 taken, 2 passed. I'm starting to feel a little confident about taking the test. I think I must have taken about 40 practice tests now.  In the beginning, it was a failure after failure but in the last 2 weeks, there has been a steady improvement.

Joan made the new salmorejo cold soup for tonight's dinner. It's her first attempt and we are looking forward to trying it and see the difference between it and gazpacho. If it's good I will post the recipe.

To naprawdę niesamowite.

2 more..

Failed 2 driver tests last night but passed 3 this morning. It's those new questions inserted into to test that get me sometimes although when I fail it's only by 1 or 2 points and always the new questions not seen before.  Zbysezk is lucky, he has one of the early driver licenses that have a lifetime permit with no retesting. However, I think it's good they finally changed the rules for new drivers who must be tested more often now like in the U.S., especially after age 75.

Carmelo.

A good conversation with my friend, Carmelo, from Spain this morning after I successfully passed 2 more driver's tests. He is on vacation until September so I will have more opportunities to speak with him this month via Skype. He asked me what was my method in learning Spanish and I said listening to podcasts from Juan and repetition.  Listening 1 time wasn't enough to absorb new words or phrases and I usually listened to the same one 3 or 4 times. I also said it was helpful to have the text in Spanish and English. The English for when I didn't understand what was meant. He said he should apply that as his own method for learning English. He said listening is his problem because they speak too fast in English. I told him about the VLC Media player where you can open a file and slow down the speech. I know that would help him because I have used it for Spanish. I only wish there were as many programs available for Polish as English or Spanish. Tomorrow we will speak again at 16:00. Now it is hot in Spain, 40C. I am happy that we are in Poland, 26C.

It is an overcast day with the sun breaking through the clouds occasionally. A good day to be outside so we went. First to Sołacki Park for a walk and then to the center and Empik for coffee.  Of course, on our mind were the 2 tragic events yesterday in the U.S. 2 sic individuals shooting a total of 29 innocent people. Why the U.S. government does not enact stricter gun laws is beyond belief. It is worried about foreign terrorists but it's own domestic terrorists kill more people every month. I believe this is especially true since it's own President does not speak out against it forcefully enough and pass laws for gun control.

We changed to something more positive like where to take a small vacation inside Poland next month after school is started. We have been to the major cities but would like to visit someplace interesting with about a 3-4 hour drive from Poznań. Any suggestions?

Powiedziałem mu o odtwarzaczu VLC Media Player, w którym możesz otworzyć plik i spowolnić mowę. Wiem, że to mu pomogło, ponieważ użyłem go do hiszpańskiego.

Still waiting.

Checking on Joan's residency permit, she is still waiting for an appointment with the person handling her case. All we can do is wait.

Being a nice day for walking, we went across the railroad tracks into the next neighborhood of Podolany. That is where Radek and a few other friends live. We just walked some of the streets looking at the different types of houses there, some old and some new. The old ones had more character. One, in particular, was started many years ago by a man working in Germany but he ran out of money and ended up building a smaller house behind the big one to actually live in. The big one is like a mini-palace. Radek's place was owned by his father and mother, a 3 story house, so it is old in character while in contrast, his sister's house next door is new and modern looking. We walked for about an hour and then returned home, stopping at Chata Polska to buy hamburger buns for tonight's dinner.

At home, we returned to studying Spanish together and then I did some study of Polish on my own.

I chatted with Gosia who is on vacation at the seaside with her son, Piotr and the weather has been good the whole time there. Her husband, Michał, has been joining them on the weekends, making the trip from Poznań.

I did 3 more driving tests yesterday, failed 2, passed 1. However, the 2 failures were due to new questions that had ambiguous answers and I chose the wrong ones.

Tutaj mieszkają Radek i kilku innych przyjaciół.

Good news.

August is starting with temperatures in the mid 20's C for the next 3 days. That's fine with us. It's the perfect temperature.

I could tell you more about what is happening in Poland but maybe you are a little tired of all of this climate and political stuff I've written about lately.

So, the good news is my driver's tests are getting better. Between yesterday and today, I have taken 5 tests, passed 3 and failed 2 but only by 1 point and mainly because I had never seen that type of question before. I think I am making progress and by September I will be ready. Now I have to make an appointment with a doctor who can give me the "official" medical examination before the test. I'm feeling much more confident about passing the theory test now. It will take a big load off my mind, not only because I have to have a Polish license living as a permanent resident in Poland but because I won't have to go back to the U.S. to renew my State license. I will be able to drive in the U.S. with a Polish license and an International Drivers License IF and when we do return for a visit.

In 10 days we will celebrate our "official" 31st wedding anniversary on August 12th, although we have been together for 44 years. It's actually a day of 4 remembrances. My mother was born on that day, got married on that day, Joan had her 1st aneurysm on that day and we got married on that day. We chose that day for those reasons.  I'm going to take Joan to dinner at that Lebanese restaurant I was told about. For her present, I am going to try to have my wedding ring re-sized for her finger. Hers got lost during a hospital visit and we haven't been wearing any. For myself, I will just get a silver band. The trick is measuring her finger tonight while she sleeps if I can.

To idealna temperatura.

Będę mógł jeździć w USA z polskim prawem jazdy i międzynarodowym prawem jazdy IF, a kiedy wrócimy na wizytę.

Za 10 dni będziemy świętować naszą „oficjalną” 31. rocznicę ślubu, 12 sierpnia, chociaż jesteśmy razem od 44 lat. To właściwie dzień 4 wspomnień.

2nd debate.

Both of us were up early enough to watch the 2nd Democratic debate rerun this morning. It was disappointing to see the same fighting between candidates to prove whose point of view on any issue was right.  This division is only helping Trump, the real enemy in the 2020 election. However, after hearing these 10 candidates blabber on I am more convinced that Warren is the best of the 20 to defeat him although the DNC is pushing hard to make Joe Biden the candidate. For us, he is too middle of the road conservative, old and not aggressive enough to take on the Idiot. After the first debate, I thought Harris was better but not after this one.

Today we spent 124 PLN($32) for next week's food. Not bad. This week it's honey-mustard chicken, cobb salad, fruit salad, cold salmorejo soup, pizza, hamburgers, chicken-chorizo & basmati rice for dinners. The salmorejo soup is similar to gazpacho but it comes from the region of Cordoba. In Malaga, they have another one called Gazpachuelo, but it is hot soup and tastes nothing like gazpacho.

One of my favorite TV series is back for another season, La Casa de Papel(Money Heist). It's a Spanish language series but you can find it with English subtitles. I was so happy to discover the new season and we will start watching the episodes tonight.

The afternoon was overcast with clouds but we went to Empik anyway for coffee and conversation. It's always nice to be outside and talk instead of in our flat, not that we don't like our flat because we do. Maybe it's just the changing of people around us as we sit there and then the children in the square. I'm not as much of a loner as people thought when I chose to move away from civilization and live alone in the forest some years ago.

Jeden z moich ulubionych seriali „La Casa de Papel” (Money Heist)wraca w kolejnym sezonie.
