Success.

Success at the market yesterday buying the duck breasts. The place was packed with people and there was a line at the meat kiosk. I waited about 10 minutes for my turn and bought 2. Cost..24PLN. A little expensive but it's the best tasting meat in Poland for Joan and I. No, not the traditional food of Polish Easter.

Today I had a nice conversation with Carmelo for 1 1/2 hours and then met with Radek for 2 more hours. He told me of his travel plans for this year, next month to Romania, June to Rome and maybe November to the U.S. We have equal thoughts about travel, so many countries yet to explore. So many countries, so little time.

Koszt.2,24PLN.

Todays thoughts.

As a person involved with the research of my family history, the question still remains why my generation was not told about family in Poland. There is no  one alive to give me the answer and everything else is only speculation. However, it bothers me that if Polish people have such strong family ties, why were we never told. Only through my own searching did I discover it late in life. Surely those fortunate enough to be working in the U.S., like myself, could have helped out family in Poland in the 70's by sending $5 or $10 a month to them. In Poland at that time it was a lot of money. I don't believe my aunt's or uncles didn't know something because one aunt, Sister Illuminata, went to Poland to teach English and met family there. Why didn't she at least tell us if no one else would?  Was there some dark secret they didn't want us to know? Why didn't my grandfather's brothers and sister save enough money to bring their mother and youngest sister to the U.S.? That is another question I have. On the other hand, if they had I probably would never have known Poland like I do now so that must be the bright side of it. Of course I will never know the answers now, only opinions of other people. That is what I was thinking about on this gray day in Poznań.

I spoke with Carmelo from Spain earlier, He said it was 30c and sunny. He was happy.

Best picture?

With the holiday coming up we didn't want to wait until tomorrow to go food shopping so we went today. Carrefour was not crowded at 13:00 and we were in and out in less than 1 hour. Cost,141ZL($42)(34EU).. I still have to buy the duck breasts for Easter dinner tomorrow at Jeżyce Market.

We watched an interesting movie last night, 3 Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri starring Frances  McDormand and Woody Harrelson. I think it was much better than The Shape of Water, the one that won the Oscar for Best Picture.

March 28th is was snowing this morning. Doesn't it know it's springtime?

The language school where I took the B1 sample test sent me an estimate of how long it would take me to reach the B1 level and the cost of lessons to reach that goal. They said 2 years at the cost of 20,800zl($6,131)(4,935) I replied "No, thank you".

Koszt zakupów to 141 zł (42 USD) (34EU). Jutro na rynku Jeżyce muszę kupić kacze piersi na wielkanocny obiad.
Zeszłej nocy oglądaliśmy ciekawy film „3 Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri” z udziałem Frances McDormand i Woody Harrelson. Myślę, że film był znacznie lepszy niż The Shape of Water, ten, który zdobył Oscara za najlepszy film.

28 marca rano pada śnieg. Czy nie wie, że jest wiosna?

Szkoła językowa, w której wziąłem udział w teście próbnym na poziomie B1, przesłała mi szacunek, ile czasu zajmie mi osiągnięcie poziomu B1 i jakie będę koszty lekcji, aby osiągnąć ten cel. Powiedzieli, że 2 lata, a koszt to 20 800 zł (6131 dolarów) (4935), odpowiedziałem: "Nie, dziękuję".

Took it.

OK, so I took the B1 test, only the grammar part, and scored 44. The range for B1 is between 34-53 so I passed that. However, the Polish teacher who interviewed me said I was deficient in cases, past and future tenses, prepositions, idiomas, adjectives and oral skills and doubted seriously if I could pass the whole exam. She said it would take me 2 years of lessons to prepare for it. Not good news but not unexpected. I might as well just do the Presidential approval way which is also 2 ways.

I had a nice meeting with an "old" young friend, Maciek, who is home from Australia for the holiday. It was nice to see him again and hear about his adventures going to university in that country. I've known him since he was about 14 years old.

Znam go od momentu, kiedy miał około 14 lat.

Prom.

My great nephew, Walter Piekarczyk IV had his high school Senor Prom last week. He's had the same girlfriend since his freshman year. In this day and age, that must be a record.

Our favorite team, Duke, lost in it's try to reach the National Collegiate Basketball Championship game. Oh well, on to next year.

A quarter of the year is almost over already. Is time going faster or what? Those apartment buildings in the field as you approach our complex are moving right along. Something new in these will be elevators in every building no matter how many floors(levels) it has. The older buildings, like ours, only have elevators if you have more than 4 floors. I think they finally realized that as people age even climbing  to the second or third floor can be a problem. It's much cheaper to install them now at the beginning of construction.

Mój wielki siostrzeniec, Walter Piekarczyk IV, w zeszłym tygodniu miał liceum Senora Prom. On ma tę samą dziewczynę od pierwszego roku. W dzisiejszych czasach to musi być rekord.

Nasz ulubiony zespół, Duke, zagubiony w próbie dotarcia do gry National Collegiate Basketball Championship. No cóż, do następnego roku.

Resting?

A day of rest? We went to Plac Wolnośći to view the Easter market of things they try to sell you for the day.  The usual religious items along with many other products that have nothing to do with Easter. Commercialization has taken over everything of any value.

We walked down to the rynek just to see what was happening. So far there are no outside cafes setup but there are tables in front of the restaurants where the sunshines, when it does shine. Today was one of those days and there were people sitting outside drinking coffee.

I talked with a friend who will call the Polish Registry department and check again on the document requirements more specifically.

To B1 or not to B1

I took 2 sample test of the Polish B1 language exam. One said I had 53% correct and the other 39% correct. Probably the latter is correct. Being the optimist, I contacted a language school here and asked if they could prepare an intensive course for me to pass the test. They, of course, said I should come and take a test to estimate what level I am at and if it is possible. I will go on Tuesday to do it. Naturally, the intensive course they would prepare will cost money and how much it costs will determine whether or not I can do it. It can't hurt to at least take the test. I'm not hoping for a miracle. The B1 is about 4 hours long and includes listening comprehension, grammar accuracy, reading comprehension, writing and oral examination.

Pójdę we wtorek, aby to zrobić. Oczywiście intensywny kurs musiałby to zrobić. Mogę to zrobić.

Certificate

I finally have a death certificate of my father. My sister was kind enough to email a photo of it and she will send a copy of it through the mail. I thought he was born in Hammond, Indiana, in the only hospital in the area. However, the certificate says he was born in Illinois, just across the state border so it must have been a home birth. I made the change in the family tree to keep it accurate.

Today we did out weekly shopping..155zl($45)(37EU). With "Orange Head's" new trade war with China already the rate of exchange for the dollar is dropping. It had been going up until today.

I met with Radek for 1 1/2 hours and then Skyped with Carmelo for another 1 1/2. He told me some interesting things about the national health care system in Spain.

W końcu mam akt zgonu mojego ojca.

Trwało to do dzisiaj.

Hoy hicimos compras semanales.155zl ($ 45) (37EU).

Beat up.

Ah, Spring is here and it's snowing. How wonderful!

I am beating myself up today because I haven't done enough to learn Polish. It's quite evident. I should at least be at the B1 level by now but I am not. I took a test yesterday for B1 and only got 53 out of 150 correct. I scored highest on grammar(amazingly) but vocabulary and comprehension were my downfall. I took the test to see if I could pass it. It would make getting citizenship much faster. Alas, I let myself down. With language certification I could have citizenship in 3 months instead of waiting up to 2 years. Has anyone reading this taken the B1 exam? What can you tell me about it?

The highlight of my day was talking once again with Carmelo. He has gotten over his cold and messaged me early this morning on WhatsApp. Joan made out the shopping list for next weeks food and tomorrow we will go.

To dość oczywiste. Wziąłem test, aby sprawdzić, czy mogę go zdać. Dzięki temu mógłbym mieć obywatelstwo o wiele szybciej. Niestety, zawiodłem się. Dzięki certyfikatowi językowemu mógłbym mieć obywatelstwo w ciągu 3 miesięcy zamiast czekać do 2 lat.

4 in a row

Chicken Little said the Sky is Falling. It must be so because we have 4 days of sunshine now. How wonderful!

Finally I am connected again with my friend Lila from Bydgoszcz on Skype. Due to our vacation time communications stopped and I missed not talking with her. She has been trying to help me with my Polish language for some time and I missed our conversations. She has a good spirit and sense of adventure to new places, something we share in common. We've met a few times in person, both here in Poznań and in her town.

My friends from the language club in Spain sent this video for pronunciation of Spanish sounds and not only is it good but the person doing it is very funny and emotional about it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HbF5qVYy72g&t=207s

3

3 sunny days in a row, it's a miracle! Even with cold temperatures it's a nice day outside. It's almost like being back in Spain except for the cold.

My friend, Carmelo, is sick with a cold so we didn't talk today but I had 2 1/2 hours with Radek and we covered some Spanish. I'm still having a little trouble conjugating the simple past tense of verbs but it's getting better each day.

My Polish is still a struggle but step by step it will get better. Of course, I would rather leap forward but that's just my impatience after 10 years.

Joan made a nice dinner last night. pork roast with potatoes, carrots and cranberries. Today she is making a big salad for dinner.

3 słoneczne dni z rzędu, to cud!

Wczoraj Joan przygotowała smaczny obiad: pieczeń wieprzowa z ziemniakami, marchewką i żurawiną.

I should have.

I was thinking today about something I should have done years ago, apply for Polish citizenship. You can do it after residing here permanently for 5 years and in August we will begin our 11th year. I was going to do it in 2016 and then Joan had her stroke and everything in my life was put on hold. Before it happened I started checking into the procedure and found out I first had to register my birth in the Polish Birth Records office, providing documents of my birth, my mother and fathers birth, my marriage, Joan's birth and her parents birth, all with official government seals. After that was done, then I could make the application for citizenship but only to the President of Poland. It is up to his decision to grant or deny it. The whole process can take up to 2 years. In the past I didn't care much about it but now I want it.

It's tax time in Poland and this week I will take our documents to our tax adviser so he can prepare our forms for the tax man. We are fortunate to have him and it's always a pleasure to visit him.

Is there anyone from Spain reading this blog? Is the translation good or bad?

Miałem zamiar to zrobić w 2016 roku, a potem Joan miała udar i w moim życiu wszystko zostało przystopowane.

Success.

I am connected again with Carmelo. All is right with the world. I missed our daily talks in Spain with him and was so happy today when we had our first contact on Skype. I didn't want to lose contact with him. He can teach me so much that is not in books.

After Carmelo, we Skyped with Joan's daughter and grandkids, Nikki and Joe. It was nice to get caught up on what's been happening with them the last two weeks. We did Skype with them while in Spain but not since we have been back home.

Rough night.

It's -3c but sunny so not so bad today.

I had a rough night sleeping..or not sleeping last night. I went to bed at midnight, woke up ay 01:00, stayed up until 02:00, back to bed until 04:00 and then didn't go back to bed again. On the bright side of that I had a chance to chat with Joan's daughter on FB while Joan slept. I told her about our Spain trip and she said if we go back next year she will come and stay with us. She asked if I thought she could find work there and I told her she would need a work visa and it wouldn't hurt if she could speak some Spanish also. We'll see what comes of that.

I heard an interesting thing from a doctor friend of mine today. She said that when you reach 75 and are on national health care, your prescriptions are free. That sounds a little strange to me but I read the same thing about medications in Spain. She also told me I was wrong about the closing of stores on Sundays. If you look at the picture, all dates in black and red, stores will be closed, not only Sundays. This should help the economy.

To powinno pomóc gospodarce.

Knock. knock.

A knock on the door yesterday and a surprise delivery from Amazon from the U.K. I ordered the 2 Spanish/English books we used in Spain but they were due for delivery on the 24th. I only ordered them last Monday and on Thursday I had them. I used only standard shipping so I am very surprised to have them in 3 days.

The 16th of March and it's -1c. This is not good. We should have stayed another month in Spain.

Pukanie do drzwi wczoraj i niespodziewana dostawa z Amazon z U.K.

Comparison.

Yes, it's that day again, food shopping day. We went to Carrefour and spent 155 PLN, ($45)(37EU) for the next 8 days of food. A little more than normal but we have an extra day because Joan will make the zucchini soup that lasts for 2 days and also she will make a pork roast this week. We wanted to make the soup in Spain but she had no blender and you absolutely need to blend the ingredients for the taste to be exact.

To give you a further example of medication costs here compared to the U.S., I take 4 and Joan takes 4 on a daily basis. Today I bought a three month supply for both of us. The total cost was 409zl($120)(97EU). Per month that is 136zl($40)(32EU).. for 8 medications. In the U.S, I used to pay that much for 1 medication.

Just my luck, Carmelo made his Skype connection to me and called this morning but I was not at home. I sent him a message and hope we can connect on Saturday.

We have been watching an interesting serial in Spanish with English subtitles, La Casa de Papel. A friend told me about it and thought it might help hearing the Spanish pronunciation.

Aby dać ci kolejny przykład kosztów leczenia tutaj w porównaniu do USA, biorę 4, a Joan bierze 4 dziennie.

Losing ground.

Already I feel a decrease in our study time of Spanish. It's just not the same without Carmelo coming to our house everyday and the 2 lessons with Ann. I'm trying to maintain the same schedule but it's hard to do. The daily contact is what I miss and the language club also. The weather I can put up with but I miss the Spanish talk.

I visited my neurologist today to get prescriptions filled and found out he is moving to Zelona Gora soon. So, I have 2 options; 1. Take his recommendation of a new doctor in Poznań or, 2. stay with him and travel to Zelona every 6 months for a visit. I really don't want a new doctor since I have been with him for 9 years and he knows me well. We have friends in Zelona so it would be a good time to visit with them. It's only a 1 1/2 hour drive. He was also the one who treated Joan when she had her stroke so he knows her. It was because of him that she got the care that she did.

Outside it is gray, totally covered in clouds, getting colder and my friends in Santiago say it is a beautiful Spring day, 21c and sunny. Que lastima que estamos aqui! What a pity we are here!

To dzięki niemu otrzymała tę opiekę.

Make up your mind.

 Dittenber Family
Gray, sunny, gray, sunny...wish it would make up it's mind, preferably sunny. Didn't really realize the influence a gray skies until spending the last 2 months in sunny ones. This could be depressing IF you let it but I won't. Spring can't be too far off and I'm looking forward to that. Spring, Summer and Autumn are good in Poland.  This one will be especially good with a wedding to go to and a visit from cousins from Michigan.

Marilyn Mapes with her daughter and family(Kim Dittenber) will be here in August to attend the wedding of another cousin and there is a good chance we will meet. I met her daughter before but not her daughter's family.

I had a meeting with Radek today and in the afternoon we met with Zbyszek. I was going to talk with cousin Andrzej tonight but he is busy with work. It has been 2 months since we talked.

Ten będzie szczególnie dobry z weselem i wizytą kuzynów z Michigan.

Time warp.

Slight time warp for me on yesterday's blog, the store closings were last Sunday. I finally realized today was the 11th about 14:00 when we went outside for a walk before studying. It was a warm day, 15c.

No leaves breaking out on the trees yet but it shouldn't be too much longer before the green starts appearing. Talked with our friend, Zbyszek, and were going to meet this week to tell him about our latest trip. Now the question is where to next? I'm thinking Romania before it gets too hot but that depends. On the 23rd I'm going to have the right hand operated on to correct the little finger and that takes 6 weeks for recovery, minimum. Driving will be a problem this time because I am right-handed and Joan doesn't drive at all.

I found 2 Spanish serials with English subtitles to watch to continue the learning process. It was 23c in Santiago today. Would have been a good day for coffee at the beach and people watching.

Znalazłem 2 hiszpańskie seriale z angielskimi napisami do obejrzenia, aby kontynuować naukę. Dzisiaj było 23 cale w Santiago. Byłby to dobry dzień na kawę na plaży i obserwowanie ludzi.

It's back.

Well, Ryanair delivered our lost bag today to our flat today, even though they said they were not responsible for losing it. That was nice of them. Now we have our Spanish lessons back and can resume studying.....along with Polish for me.

The day started out sunny but quickly turned cloudy and gray and stayed like that the rest of the day. Welcome back to Poland!

Tomorrow the NEW law goes into affect thanks to the PiS party, the ruling government. All stores are closed on the first Sunday of every month. Next year it will be 2 Sundays, then 3 and then every Sunday.

Witaj ponownie w Polsce!

Jutro NOWE prawo wchodzi w życie dzięki partii PiS, rządowi rządzącemu. Wszystkie sklepy są zamknięte w pierwszą niedzielę każdego miesiąca. W przyszłym roku będzie to 2 niedziele, potem 3, a następnie co niedziela.

Bienvenido a Polonia!

Surprise meeting.

Marilyn, I answered your comment,

Tori,,VERY clever, that was 1 of the 2 reasons for going :-).

We spent 2 hours with Radek today telling each other about our adventures of the last 2 months, his in Australia, New Zealand and Tasmania and ours in Spain. We are kindred spirits in respect to traveling and enjoying life while we can.

In the afternoon the airport called and said they had my missing bag so I will pick it up tomorrow, After that call Joan made out her shopping list and we went to the store to buy food for the next week,,,cost 123 zl($36)(29 EU).

A nice surprise happened while shopping, I met cousin Marcin and his fiancée, Anita, doing their shopping also. It's been a little while since we saw them so it was nice seeing them again. We talked for a short time and then resumed our shopping.

Back home, Wrócimy do domu, Regrasamos a casa.

Up at 4:30 this morning to take the flight from Alicante to Poznań. The trip was uneventful until we reached the end and our small bag was missing containing medications, our Spanish lessions and some electronics. I had it with me until we boarded the plane and don't know how it got lost. I talked with a lady who proceeded to fill out a report and uring that time I received a call from someone at Ryanair in NewCastle, England informing me that a passenger mistook my bag for his  and took it to England. He said it was not technically Ryanair's fault but they would make arrangements for it to be flown to Poznań in the next few days and delivered to me. It was riving me crazy thinking how I could have lost that bag until I received the phone call.

Back at home, we were happy to see our place was just like we left it 2 months ago and warm inside. We unpacked, went to the store to buy something for dinner and now it's time to relax for the rest of the evening. We miss Spain already.

O 4:30 rano, aby wziąć lot z Alicante do Poznania.

Last day

Our last day! We had the pleasure of spending a few hours at the house of Carmelo and his wife, Cristina, near Balsicas. It's in a beautiful location with 40 olive trees, open land all around the house, a view to the mountains to the south, a small swimming pool and very private.

Similar to the Polish way, more food was prepared than we could eat. There was jamon(ham), but a special ham that is cured in the mountains for 20 months, choriso, bread, cheese, black tomatoes, artichokes with anchovies and red peppers in olive oil. We drank beer with lemon in it.

For dessert there were various pastries and honeys along with walnuts from the mountain home of his wife's aunt and uncle.  We had coffee with the dessert. After we were done it was time to go for our last lesson with Ann so we said goodbye.

Now it's just a matter of hours until we leave.

Less than 48.

The good people at the language school printed out our boarding passes for our flight back, our friend, Radek, went last night and reset our thermostat in our flat to 22c so it will be warm inside when we get home and now we are just savoring our last hours of warm weather and blue skies.

It's been quite an experience being here in Spain for these 2 months. we have learned a lot of Spanish, made progress, new friends, seen  few extraordinary places and I've taken pictures of interesting things. It was a cooler than expected weather but still better than the weather in Poland and the sun offset the temperature. I had the best haircut ever and a great experience with that. The owner of the house we rented was very nice and did everything she could to make are stay enjoyable. In less than 48 hours we will be back home.

The last Sunday.

The day started out sunny, then turned gray and now it's sunny again. I helped Joan finish chapter 10 of our lessons then I finished chapter 14. I think once we are back home I will go over them all with her again.

Now it's just a matter of 4 days until we leave. I can't say I'm looking forward to it knowing the temperature forecast for the day we arrive is 6c and cloudy all week. How depressing! However, I do miss the friends there and I really need to hear the Polish language again. 2 months without using it was not good.

Finally got it.

Pictures on the right were taken by Esther. >>>The Last Supper.

A tough night sleeping after the late dinner(for us). I must have woken up every hour until 7:00 and then, since I was awake, decided it was a good time to see the sunrise at 7:48 as the weatherman predicted. However, he was wrong by about 5 minutes and by the time I got there, 7:48, the sun had already broken the horizon. I did take a few pictures of it and the reflection it made on buildings and trees. It is certainly a peaceful time with only one other person on the boardwalk. Joan was still sleeping when I returned home at 8:30.

Later in the evening(Friday) it was time for our last meeting with the language club. Only 3 meetings and already I felt like there was a basis for establishing new friendships if only we had more time. 4 new people (for us) came to the cafeteria where we start the evening and one was surprisingly from Houston. She is in Spain as a teacher assistant, fluent in Spanish and easy to talk with. It was good for Joan who still has problems breaking the conversation barrier.

About 9:30 we went to the restaurant for dinner and ate and talked for another 2 hours before it was time to leave. It was a little sad to know it will be some time before we meet again Perhaps some of them will stay in touch using WhatsApp or through my blog which several of them now know about. I hope so.

Zrobiłem jej kilka zdjęć i refleksję nad budynkami i drzewami. Joan wciąż spała, kiedy wróciłem do domu o 8:30.
