I went to bed at midnight, woke up a 3AM, back to bed at 4AM and had a interesting dream. Last night it was only natural to reflect on Christmas past and what it was like for me. I thought about the 3 aunts and 2 uncles I had. Uncle Chester was my favorite uncle. Growing up without a father it was easy to view him as a figure of authority but also fun to be with when he visited. Usually when he would visit in mornings before school he could talk my mother out of sending me to school and I was happy with that arrangement. At that time I thought he was nearing old age but of course now I know better. He was only in 35 when he died. In my dream I was looking at old pictures of him and suddenly he walked through the door. I was shocked to see him and asked how he could be here since he was dead. He told me he wasn’t dead to me and that as long as I lived, he would live also. I wanted to ask him questions about my ancestors but in the distance I heard someone telling me it was 8:15AM. It was said again……..“It’s 8:15”. Finally the 8:15 woke me up. It was Joan telling me it was time to get up. When I thought about the dream I made me realize no one is really dead as long as I continue to think of them. I may not be able to visit their graves in America any longer but they are always with me.
Today was a big day of celebration in Pozna艅. It marked the beginning of the fighting with Germany to free Wielkopolska. In Plac Wolno艣膰i a special speakers platform was built for a speech from the President of Poland and a stage was erected on the other side for music. Zbyszek and I were going to go but decided to watch the event of television instead. Too many people and all the streets were closed leading to the Plac. We didn’t feel like taking a bus or tram to get there.
In the autumn of 1918 Polish hopes for a sovereign Poland began serious preparations for an uprising after the
Kaiser Wilhelm's abdication on
9 November 1918, which saw the end of the German monarchy, which would be replaced by the
Weimar Republic.
The uprising broke out on
27 December 1918 in
Pozna艅 after a patriotic speech by
Ignacy Paderewski, a famous Polish pianist.
On the Plac was a reenactment of the speech by Paderewski and fighting between Polish and German soldiers. A large crowd was on hand to witness the event.
Poszed艂em do 艂贸偶ka o p贸艂nocy, budzi艂em 3AM, w ty艂 do 艂贸偶ka przy 4AM i mia艂em interesuj膮cy sen. Ubieg艂ej nocy to by艂o tylko naturalne by zastanowi膰 si臋 nad Bo偶ym Narodzeniem przesz艂ym i co to by艂o jak dla mnie. Pomy艣la艂em o 3 ciotkach i 2 wujkach, kt贸rych mia艂em. Chester wujka by艂 m贸j ulubiony wujek. Dorastaj膮c bez ojca to by艂o 艂atwe by obejrze膰 go jak figura w艂adzy ale te偶 zabawa by by膰 z kiedy on bywa艂. Zwykle kiedy on bywa艂by w rankach przed szko艂膮 on m贸g艂by powiedzie膰 moj膮 matk臋 z wysy艂ania mnie do szko艂y i by艂em szcz臋艣liwy z tamtym rozmieszczeniem. W tamtym czasie my艣la艂em, 偶e on zbli偶a艂 si臋 staro艣膰 ale oczywi艣cie teraz wiem lepiej. On by艂 tylko w 35 kiedy on umar艂. W moim 艣nie patrza艂em na stare zdj臋cia go i nagle on chodzi艂 przez drzwi. By艂em wstrz膮艣ni臋ty by zobaczy膰 go i pyta艂em jak on m贸g艂by by膰 tutaj odk膮d on by艂 martwy. On powiedzia艂 mi on nie by艂 martwy do mnie i 偶e tak d艂ugo jak 偶y艂em, on 偶y艂by te偶. Chcia艂em zada膰 mu pytania o moich przodkach ale w odleg艂o艣ci us艂ysza艂em, jak kto艣 powiedzia艂 mi to by艂 8:15AM. To by艂o powt贸rzone……..“To jest 8:15”. W ko艅cu 8:15 budzonego mnie. To by艂a Joan m贸wi膮ca mi to by艂 czas by wsta膰.
Dzisiaj by艂 du偶y dzie艅 celebrowania w Pozna艅. To zaznaczy艂o pocz膮tek walczenia z Niemcami do wolnej Wielkopolski. W Plac Wolno艣膰i specjalna platforma m贸wi膮cych by艂a zbudowana dla mowy od Prezydenta Polski i scena by艂a wzniesiona na innej stronie dla muzyki. Zbyszek i ja mia艂em p贸j艣膰 ale zdecydowa艂em si臋 obserwowa膰 zdarzenie telewizji zamiast tego. Zbyt du偶o ludzi i wszystkie ulice by艂y zamkni臋te prowadzenie do Plac. Nie poczuli艣my ochot臋 na brania autobusu albo tramwaj by dosta膰 si臋 tam.
Wielki t艂um by艂 w r臋ku by by膰 艣wiadkiem zdarzenia.
