Prague 3

This morning we slept in until 8AM, woke up, had breakfast and by 9:15AM we boarded the bus for the subway station.  The transportation system is very good. With a 3 day pass we are able to use all busses and subways with little problem and we were in Prague Old Town by 10:15.  It was a short walk to the famous Charles bridge but before we got there we stopped at the Prague concert hall to take a few pictures with the famous Czech composer, Anton Dvorak.

Our view of thee Charles bridge started from the bridge just before it so we could have a view of the whole bridge.  We walked a little way down by the river then had to take a sidewalk to get to the beginning of it.  It's impressive, from end to the other.  Of course, it was already packed with visitors and since no cars are allowed on the bridge people were walking everywhere.  Each side of the bridge has many statues and monuments and the only thing was necessary was cleaning the statues so you could have a better definition of each one.  Some were very dark with age so details were a little difficult to see but still impressive.  There was the famous statue that everybody has to rub and so that  part of the statue is golden in color while the remaining portion is almost black.

All along both sides of the bridge are artists of various kinds selling their work. There was even a wooden box maker like I use to make years ago when I did woodworking. Photographers had some beautiful shots of the bridge at different times of the year and sketch artists were busy making caricatures of some of the tourists.  We spent about an hour on the bridge and then crossed it into waht they call "Lesser Town".  First we stopped for some coffee and warm up a little because the temperature was 15c but it wasn't raining.

Done with the coffee, we walked through the massive gate into "Lesser Town" and proceeded up the street where we saw the German embassy with an impressive door. From there we went to the church of St. Thomas to see yet another church.  I was hoping to see a palace but the one we went to was now in private hands and the other closed.  So we went to St. Thomas, saw another chruch and then crossed back over the Charles bridge and headed to the rynek.  Once in the rynek we saw the famous clock.

The Prague Astronomical Clock is a  medieval astronomical clock.0.0870083; 14.420917. The clock was first installed in 1410, making it the third-oldest astronomical clock in the world and the only one still working. The clock is mounted on the southern wall of  City Hall. The clock mechanism itself is composed of three main components: the astronomical dial, representing the position of the Sun and Moon in the sky and displaying various astronomical details; "The Walk of the Apostles", a clockwork hourly show of figures of the Apostles and other moving sculptures—notably a figure of Death (represented by a skeleton) striking the time; and a calendar dial with medallions representing the months.

The rynek is very big with hundreds of people walking aroung there today.  One thing that immediately attracted our eye was a Salvador Dali exhibition but upon seeing the entrance price we decided to wait until next year when we return to Spain and visit the Dali museum in Figueras.  One thing about Prague, prices are very high for everything.

One point of musical interest was that in every church we visited there was a concert being held of either Bach, Mozart, Beethoven or Dvorak tonight. They were not free concerts but there were concerts to be performed tonight.

After seven hours of walking and visiting we had had enough for the day so we boarded the greenling subway, took it to the redline, then to the bus and arrived back at our pensionet at 5PM.

Pictures are posted but like last night, the IE browser may not show them so use Firefox.
