Last night, laying in bed and waiting for sleep to overcome me, I thought about the months of living in my pseudo-Indian teepee in the forest where I would build my house. it was a Lakota Sioux-style tipi, one of the world’s most ingenious and functional shelters. For hunters of the Great Plains that followed the bison herds, it was very important that they had shelters that were easy to transport, set up, and use.
I had purchased it from a company in Colorado and waited for UPS to deliver it. On a snowy Tuesday morning, the UPS truck pulled up in front of our house. Sticking out of the back of the truck were the 14 poles that made up the framework to hold the canvas. Of course, the original teepees were covered in animal hides.
Mine was a 20-foot wide teepee, capable of sleeping 10 people. It was called a Consul teepee. My teepee cover was a standard 15 oz. 100% marine canvas. Each of the 14 poles was 26 feet long. The teepee included a standard door flap, 9 lacing pins to secure the front of the teepee where the cover came together, tipi ropes that are essential for pitching a teepee and also play a key role in operating the smoke flaps, and the interior liner. The liner was a 13 oz. canvas that kept the heat in at night and controlled airflow in the teepee.
However, the idea of the original liners was different. At night with wood in the firepit, an attacking enemy tribe could see the people's shadow and shoot arrows through the canvas to kill the occupants inside. The liner usually prevented that.
When it rains, even if the smoke flaps are closed, water runs down the poles into the ground. On the outside of the pole is the cover canvas, and on the inside is the canvas liner. The liner is held in place by a manila rope wrapped from one pole to the next. If you want the water to run all the way down to the ground instead of dripping into the teepee, you wrap the rope around one pole, and where it crosses the rope to the other pole, you insert a 6-inch long branch under the cross spot. Then, the water will run all the way to the ground.
The cover canvas is one piece that wraps completely around the teepee and meets where the whole is for the door opening. The 9 lacing pins hold it all together.
The door flap is a canvas piece that lays over the hole for the door. In the Indian days, if your flap did not cover the door hole, visitors were invited to enter. If the flap was down, it was for privacy.
You would be surprised how warm a teepee can be with a firepit in the middle. On cool or cold nights, mine was always full of dry wood only. Behind my sleeping bag, I kept a supply within arms reach. If it got cold at night, all I had to do was reach for a log and put it into the pit.
Of course, when Joan came I made a real bed with a mattress for her comfort. She loved my teepee.
Ostatniej nocy, le偶膮c w 艂贸偶ku i czekaj膮c, a偶 ogarnie mnie sen, my艣la艂em o miesi膮cach 偶ycia w moim pseudo-india艅skim tipi w lesie, w kt贸rym p贸藕niej zbudowa艂em sw贸j dom. By艂o to tipi w stylu Lakota Sioux, jedno z najbardziej pomys艂owych i funkcjonalnych schronie艅 na 艣wiecie. Dla my艣liwych z Wielkich R贸wnin, kt贸rzy pod膮偶ali za stadami bizon贸w, bardzo wa偶ne by艂o, aby mieli schronienie, kt贸re mo偶na by艂o 艂atwo transportowa膰, ustawia膰 i u偶ywa膰.
Kupi艂em go od firmy w Kolorado i czeka艂em, a偶 UPS go dostarczy. W 艣nie偶ny wtorkowy poranek ci臋偶ar贸wka UPS zajecha艂a przed nasz dom. Z ty艂u ci臋偶ar贸wki wystawa艂o 14 s艂up贸w, kt贸re tworzy艂y szkielet utrzymuj膮cy p艂贸tno. Oczywi艣cie oryginalne tipi by艂y pokryte sk贸rami zwierz膮t.
Moje tipi by艂o szerokie na 20 st贸p i mog艂o pomie艣ci膰 10 os贸b. Nazywa艂o si臋 Consul Teepee. Pokrycie mojego tipi stanowi艂o standardowe p艂贸tno 偶eglarskie o gramaturze 15 uncji. Ka偶dy z 14 s艂up贸w mia艂 26 st贸p d艂ugo艣ci. Teepee zawiera艂o standardow膮 klap臋 drzwiow膮, 8 szpil do mocowania przedniej cz臋艣ci teepee w miejscu 艂膮czenia poszycia, liny tipi, kt贸re s膮 niezb臋dne do rozbijania teepee, a tak偶e odgrywaj膮 kluczow膮 rol臋 w obs艂udze klap dymnych oraz wewn臋trzn膮 wy艣ci贸艂k臋. Wy艣ci贸艂ka by艂a wykonana z p艂贸tna o grubo艣ci 13 uncji, kt贸re utrzymywa艂o ciep艂o w nocy i kontrolowa艂o przep艂yw powietrza w tipi.
Idea oryginalnych liner贸w by艂a jednak inna. W nocy z drewnem w palenisku, atakuj膮ce wrogie plemi臋 mog艂o wstrzeli膰 strza艂y do 艣rodka przez p艂贸tno i zabi膰 znajduj膮cych si臋 tam mieszka艅c贸w. Je艣li chcesz, aby woda sp艂ywa艂a na ziemi臋 zamiast kapa膰 do tipi, owijasz lin臋 wok贸艂 jednego s艂upa i w miejscu, w kt贸rym krzy偶uje si臋 ona z lin膮 drugiego s艂upa, wk艂adasz 6-calow膮 ga艂膮藕 pod miejsce skrzy偶owania.
P艂贸tno pokrywaj膮ce jest jednym elementem, kt贸ry owija si臋 ca艂kowicie wok贸艂 tipi i spotyka si臋 w miejscu, w kt贸rym znajduje si臋 otw贸r na drzwi.
Klapa drzwi to kawa艂ek p艂贸tna, kt贸ry nak艂ada si臋 na otw贸r na drzwi. W czasach Indian, je艣li klapa nie zakrywa艂a otworu drzwiowego, go艣cie byli zapraszani do wej艣cia. Je艣li klapa by艂a opuszczona, zapewnia艂a prywatno艣膰.
Zdziwi艂by艣 si臋, jak ciep艂e mo偶e by膰 tipi z paleniskiem po艣rodku. W ch艂odne lub zimne noce moje zawsze by艂o pe艂ne suchego drewna.
Oczywi艣cie, kiedy przyjecha艂a Joan, zrobi艂em dla niej prawdziwe 艂贸偶ko z materacem. Uwielbia艂a moje tipi.
