Cousin Aleksandra Mejer's visit & a new family member.

We had a nice visit with cousin Aleksandra Mejer today.  I drove to osiedle Lecha to pick her up at 1PM and found she had baked a chocolate cake for the visit.  It was her first visit to our flat and I think she was surprised at all the family pictures on the walls and the geneaology chart.  One great thing for me, besides her visit, was that she was able to update and correct some information in my geneaology records.  She also provided me with some pictures from Nasza Klasza of other Mejer relatives.

We served her lunch of the chicken style of Flacki that Joan makes and then followed that with her chocoalate cake and a few pastries I bought from Kandulski's.  It was really nice having her visit and she invited Joan and I come to her parents house in Koszaliń and spend some time with them this coming summer.

Aleksandra is a Lech Poznań fan and with a match being played tonight at 5PM we had to leave a little early so she could get back to her flat in time to watch the game.  It reminded Joan and I of the days in Chicago when we hurried our daily activities in order to be on time to watch the Chicago Bears or Bulls play.

We took her back to the center of Poznań about 4PM because she had to make a quick stop to buy something before she took the tram home or else we would have taken her back to her flat.

The newest family member arrived today in Chicago to cousin Roxanne Saia and Robert Klinger.  His name is Logan Joseph Klinger. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THREE!!!!!

Spędziliśmy miły bywać z kuzyna Aleksandra Mejer dzisiaj. Pojechałem do osiedle Lecha ją odebrać 1PM znaleziono miała upieczone ciasto czekoladowe na wizytę. To była jej pierwsza wizyta w naszym mieszkaniu i myślę, że był zaskoczony wszystkich zdjęć rodziny na ścianach i na wykresie geneaology. Jedną wielką rzeczą dla mnie, poza wizytą, że była w stanie zaktualizować i poprawić niektóre informacje z mojej geneaology. Ona również mnie zdjęcia z Naszej Klasza innych krewnych Mejer.

Mamy służył jej obiad w stylu kurczaka Flacki, że Joan i sprawia, że następnie, że z jej chocoalate tort i kilka ciastek kupiłem od Kandulski's. Miło było konieczności wizyty i zaprosiła Joan i ja do domu, rodzice w Koszalinie i spędzić trochę czasu z nimi tę nadchodzącego lata.

Aleksandra jest Lech Poznań fanów i mecz rozgrywa dziś przy 5PM musieliśmy opuścić trochę za wcześnie, by mogła wrócić do swojego mieszkania w czasie, aby obejrzeć mecz. Przypomniał Joan i dni, w Chicago, kiedy pospiesznie naszych codziennych działań w celu na czas, by obejrzeć grać Chicago Bears lub Bulls.

Wzięliśmy ją z powrotem do centrum Poznania około godzina szesnasta, bo miała zrobić szybkie zatrzymanie coś kupić, zanim wzięła do domu tramwajem, albo będziemy musieli podjąć ją z powrotem do jej mieszkania.

Najnowszy członek rodziny przyleciał do Chicago do kuzyna Roxanne Saia i Robert Klinger. Jego nazwisko jest Logan Joseph Klinger. Gratulacje dla wszystkich TRZY !!!!!

Kuchen anyone?

Joan made a peach kuchen for tonights dessert.  It'a a German pastry made of butter, flour, vanilla, egg and peaches.  Over the top you put cinnamon and sugar.  It looks great!  I'm sure it will taste the same.  One of the joys of retirement is that she finally has time to try new food courses and desserts.

Outside it was gray,cold and raining all day but inside the smell of the kuchen brightened up the house.  The temperatures are dropping and by Tuesday it is suppose to be -1c.  I don't mind it but lets have some snow to go along with the colder weather.

Sunday is the voting day for the President of Poznań so the TV ads are plentiful for the numerous candidates.

Joanna zrobiła kuchen brzoskwinia na deser dzisiejszych wieczorów. It'a niemiecki ciasto z masła, mąki, wanilia, jajko i brzoskwinie. Over the top umieścić cynamonem i cukrem. To wygląda świetnie! Jestem pewien, że będzie smakować tak samo. Jedną z radości emerytalnego jest to, że wreszcie ma czas, aby spróbować nowych kursów żywności i deserów.

Na dworze było szaro, zimno i padało cały dzień, ale wewnątrz zapach kuchen rozjaśniła się w domu. Temperatury spadają, a we wtorek jest przypuszczać, aby być-1c. Nie mam nic, ale pozwala mieć trochę śniegu, aby przejść wraz z chłodniejsze dni.

Niedziela to dzień głosowania na Prezydenta Miasta Poznania, więc reklamy telewizyjne są obfite dla licznych kandydatów.

So..............the big news today is the Polish National football team beat the team from Côte d'Ivoire team, 3-1 and the game was played in the stadium of Poznań.  I was on my way home last night and it was evident there was an upcoming game because more that one car passed me with football fans all dressed up in the red and white national colors.  Fans are fans, just like in American football and dress up for the occasion to support the team.

It was our meeting day with Zbyszek at Kandulski's.  Arriving a few minutes late, Z had already ordered the coffee and there were two plates of complementary favorki waiting but I also had a little rolada markova(poppy seed roll) and Joan had two babecki orzechowy.  We talked about his daughters recent visit and his little excursion to Warsaw with one of his grandsons.

The picture above is my nephew, Walter Piekarczyk III and his 8 year old son, Walter IV.  My nephew is a chiropractor in Gainesville, Georgia. Time has passed since that picture and soon Walter IV will be 11.

Więc .............. dzisiejszych ważnych wiadomościach, to polski klub piłkarski National pokonał drużynę z drużyny Wybrzeża Kości Słoniowej, 3-1 i Mecz został rozegrany na stadionie w Poznaniu. Byłem w drodze do domu ostatniej nocy i to było widać nie było nadchodzącej gry, ponieważ więcej niż jeden samochód wyprzedził mnie z kibiców ubranych w białe i czerwone barwach narodowych. Fani są fani, tak jak w futbolu amerykańskim i strój na tę okazję do wsparcia zespołu.

To był nasz dzień spotkania z Zbyszek w Kandulski's. Na zdjęciu powyżej jest moim siostrzeńcem, Walter Piekarczyk III i jego syna 8 lat, Walter IV. Mój bratanek jest kręgarz w Gainesville, Georgia. Czasu minęło od tego obrazu, a wkrótce będzie 11 Walter IV.

Renovation.

Woke up to what sounded like a tank being driven through our flat.  It's actually noise of the workmen in the flat below us that  is being renovated and new windows are being put it. The sound of the drill through the concrete walls is so loud it sounds like it's in our flat.  This is going to take some time to do so we expect this kind of noise for the next week or so.  EGADS.

I read today that Ikea is opening a new accounting office in the galeria Malta area and will hire up to 700 people.  It's going to be the accounting center for central Europe and the added jobs will be good for Poznań's economy.  It's also another feather in the cap of the current president of Poznań who is up for re-election this month against several opposing candidates but I don't think they have much chance of beating him.

I don't know if this is progress.............but in Ronda Kaponiera you can now buy French Fries from an automated machine for 3,50zl($1,25)

Obudziłem się na to, co brzmiało jak czołg napędzany przez nasze mieszkanie. To rzeczywiście hałas robotników w mieszkaniu poniżej nas, że jest odnowiony i nowe okna są umieścić go. Dźwięk wiertła przez betonowe ściany jest tak głośno, że brzmi to jak to w naszym mieszkaniu. To zajmie trochę czasu, aby zrobić więc oczekujemy, że ten rodzaj hałasu na następny tydzień. EGADS.

Czytałem dziś, że Ikea jest otwarcie nowego biura rachunkowego w Galerii Malta powierzchni i zatrudni 700 osób. To będzie centrum księgowości dla Europy Środkowej i miejsc pracy, dodaje będzie dobre dla gospodarki Poznania. Jest to także kolejny pióro w kapeluszu obecnego prezydenta Poznania, który się o reelekcję w tym miesiącu przed kilku kandydatów sprzeciw, ale nie myślą, że mają większych szans na pobicie go.

Nie wiem, czy jest to postęp, ale w ............. Ronda Kaponiera można teraz kupić frytki z automat do 3,50 zl ($ 1,25)

Teddy Bear

I forgot to mention that in yesterday's picture of Rózia holding the teddy bear, it's a teddy bear she made herself for a school competition.

I made contact with Aleksandra (Ola) Mejer today and she will be coming to visit us this Saturday.  She is the cousin we met in Golina last Nov. 1st and it was our first meeting.  She lives in Poznań now so it will be easier to get to know her.  She is the daughter of Ireneusz Mejer.

Zapomniałem wspomnieć, że we wczorajszym obraz Rózia gospodarstwa misia, to miś starała się na szkolnym konkursie.

Skontaktowałem się z Aleksandra (Ola) Mejer dzisiaj i ona przyjedzie do nas w tę sobotę. Jest kuzynem spotkaliśmy się w Golina ostatnich 01 listopada i to było nasze pierwsze spotkanie. Mieszka w Poznaniu, tak teraz będzie łatwiej poznać jej. Ona jest córką Ireneusz Mejer.

Visit to the Paluch's.

After a surprise invitation last night from cousin Luka, Joan and I went to her house to vist with her, her husband Marek and my favorite younger cousin, Rózia.  I surprised them all by wearing the t-shirt they had sent me in 2005 for my birthday.  On the front of it is a picture of Rózia when she was four years old and on the back my favorite picture, Rózia giving me a kiss.  Of course, she has grown considerably since that time and when we arrived at their house she was outside with her father, practicing how to ride a bike.  It won't take her long to learn, she is very intelligent.  She is currently learning English and Russian in school and she is only 8 years old.

We stayed for a little over two hours, caught each other up on family news and then drove home to spend the evening.  It was a nice day with warm temperature, 18c and the sun was even out today.

Po ostatniej nocy niespodzianka zaproszenie od kuzyna Luka, Joan i ja poszedłem do domu, aby vist z nią, jej męża Marka i mojej ulubionej młodszego kuzyna, Rózia. I zaskoczył je wszystkie na sobie t-shirt, że wysłał mnie w 2005 roku na moje urodziny. Z przodu jest to obraz Rózia, gdy miała cztery lata i na plecach moje ulubione zdjęcie, Rózia dając mi buziaka. Oczywiście, ona znacznie wzrosła od tego czasu, gdy przybyliśmy w ich domu była poza jej ojcem był praktykujący jak jeździć na rowerze. To nie potrwa długo, aby dowiedzieć się jej, że jest bardzo inteligentny. Obecnie jest nauka języka angielskiego i rosyjskiego w szkole i ona jest tylko 8 lat.


Zatrzymaliśmy się na nieco ponad dwie godziny, złowionych się nawzajem o nowościach rodziny, a następnie pojechaliśmy do domu, aby spędzić wieczór. To był miły dzień w ciepłej temperaturze 18C i słońce nawet dzisiaj.

Another loss.

We went in search of eggplant for dinner tonight but after visiting 3 stores found none and so stopped on the was home to buy kiełbasa Dziadkowa.  It's my favorite kind now since I was told about this shop that sells good kiełbasa.  I only bought two links, don't want to have so much that it can't be eaten in a few days and since it's made daily it's easy to replace what's eaten.

In general, it was a gray day with rain but not too chilly, 15c.  22c and sunny today in Malaga :-)

Yesterday Poland lost one of it's most famous contemporary composers.  Henryk Mikołaj Górecki (December 6, 1933 – November 12, 2010), he was a composer of contemporary classical music. He studied at the State Higher School of Music in Katowice between 1955 and 1960. In 1968, he joined the faculty and rose to provost before resigning in 1979. Górecki became a leading figure of the Polish avant-garde during the post-Stalin cultural thaw. His  works of the 1950s and 1960s were characterized by adherence to dissonant modernism and drew influence from Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Krzysztof Penderecki. He continued in this direction throughout the 1960s, but by the mid 1970s had changed to a less complex sacred minimalist sound, exemplified by the hugely popular Symphony No. 3 (Symphony of Sorrowful Songs).

A laugh!

I had to laugh today when cousin Heather Nelson posted a picture of an escalator in a food store going from one floor to another and the shopping cart stayed in place with holding it.  It didn't slide down the runway to the bottom and that amazed her.  I commented that is was nice to see they are finally catching up to Poland because we have been using that type of escalator for some years now.

Speaking of which we did our weekly shopping for food, 121 zl($45) this week for the food for the next week.  It was a dreary day to do it, gray, cloudy and raining but it didn't matter inside the store.  Of course, now they have all the Christmas stuff out already and we even saw a few Christmas trees put up in some stores.  Capitalism is here!

I have to send out a thanks to reader George Zeltner for telling me about the Paint.net program for writing information on photos.  I was using Picassa lately but you could only load one picture at a time and with Paint you can do more than one so it's easier to use.

I nie śmiać się dzisiaj, kiedy Heather Nelson kuzyna wysłał obraz schodów ruchomych w sklepie spożywczym będzie z jednej kondygnacji na drugą, koszyk przebywał w miejscu, trzymając go. Nie ześlizguje pasa w dół i zadziwiła ją. I powiedział, że to było miłe by zobaczyć ich w końcu do nadrobienia Polska, bo zostały z wykorzystaniem tego typu schodów od kilku lat.

Mówiąc, które zrobiliśmy nasze cotygodniowe zakupy żywności, 121 zl ($ 45) w tym tygodniu na jedzenie na następny tydzień. Nov. 11. 1918

11 November 1918 was a landmark moment in the history of Europe, but mainly in Polish history. After 123 years of slavery and the national liberation uprisings Poland regained independence.  On 10 November 1918  Jozef Pilsudski returned to the countryi , since July 1917, he was interned by the Germans in Magdeburg. November 11, the Regency Council gave him the command of Polish forces. In Warsaw began the disarmament of the occupying forces.

This special day invites us to reflect on patriotism.  The central celebration of Independence Day held in Warsaw is transmitted by radio and television.  On this day - as every year - Fr. Primate at the Basilica Cathedral, the Old Town, and Fr. The Bishop in the Cathedral of the Polish Army in Warsaw celebrate Mass. for the Homeland. Prayers for the fallen in defense of the homeland are also said in other temples in the country and beyond its borders. There are also formal appeals of the soldiers and scouts, the statues of national heroes are bestowed with flowers and candles burned at the graves of soldiers. Public buildings, houses and streets are decorated with Polish flags. This day is for many people a lesson in patriotism.

When I worked in Chicago, many times I've seen concern about Polish homeland. I admired the spirit of patriotism of Polish people, Polish scouts zeal, well-organized May 3rd day parade. I admired the care of Polish schools and churches, the issue of Polish press and the creation of patriotic radio programs. There resilient organizations abroad many times support the Poles living in the nation and maintain the spirit of patriotism among the Polish community.

11 listopada 1918 był przełomowym momentem w dziejach Europy, ale przede wszystkim w historii Polski. Po 123 latach niewoli i wyzwolenia narodowego powstania Polska odzyskała niepodległość. W dniu 10 listopada 1918 Józef Piłsudski powrócił do countryi, od lipca 1917 roku został internowany przez Niemców w Magdeburgu. 11 listopada Rada Regencyjna dał mu dowództwo wojsk polskich. W Warszawie rozpoczął rozbrojenie okupantów.


Ten szczególny dzień skłania do refleksji na temat patriotyzmu. Centralne obchody Święta Niepodległości odbyły się w Warszawie jest transmitowany przez radio i telewizję. W tym dniu - jak co roku - ks. Prymas w Bazylice Katedralnej, na Starym Mieście, a ks. Biskup w Katedrze Wojska Polskiego w Warszawie świętować Mszy za Ojczyznę. Budynki użyteczności publicznej, domy i ulice zdobią polskiej flagi. Ten dzień jest dla wielu osób lekcją patriotyzmu.

Kiedy pracowałem w Chicago, wiele razy to widziałem troskę o polską ojczyzną. Podziwiałem ducha patriotyzmu narodu polskiego, polskich harcerzy zapał, dobrze zorganizowany 03 maja Day Parade. Podziwiałem opieki polskich szkół i kościołów, kwestii polskiej prasy i tworzenie patriotycznych programów radiowych. Jest odporna organizacji za granicą wiele razy wsparcie Polaków mieszkających w kraju i utrzymać ducha patriotyzmu wśród polskiej społeczności.

Today was Joan's version of Flacki for dinner.  Instead of using tripe, she used chicken.  It's good, one of our favorite soups.  Of course we just finished eating Rogale at Kandulski's so there is no big rush for dinner.

We'll have plenty of mushroom soup this year since our friend, Zbyszek, gave us a fresh bag of dried mushrooms today when we met at Kandulski's.  He also gave us a package of Kminek but it's in the whole form and we need it in the powder form so we're still looking.

Tomorrow is sw. Marciń day and the celebration begins at 11AM at the town hall followed by a parade and then the outside music venues in front of the Zamek.  It will last most of the day and will draw thousands of people.   Hope the weather is good.

I mentioned the other day about the difference in the Aula building since it's been renovated.  Here you see two pictures comparing the two.  The pictures were taken by Dominika Zurawska.

Dzisiaj była wersja Joan z Flacki na kolację. Zamiast flaki, używała kurczaka. To dobrze, jedna z naszych ulubionych zup. Oczywiście tylko skończył jeść Rogale w Kandulski tak nie jest duży pęd do kolacji.

Będziemy mieli mnóstwo zupa grzybowa w tym roku od naszego przyjaciela, Zbyszek, dał nam nowego worek suszonych grzybów dziś, gdy spotkaliśmy się w Kandulski's. On również dał nam pakiet Kminek ale w całej postaci i musimy to w formie proszku, więc jesteśmy nadal szukam.

Jutro jest sw. dzień Marcina i uroczystości zaczynają się w 11AM w ratuszu po paradzie, a następnie poza imprez muzycznych przed Zamek. Trwać on będzie przez większość dnia i wystawi tysiące ludzi. Mam nadzieję, że pogoda jest dobra.

Crashed!

Yesterday's absence was caused by a little melt down of the new system.  I loaded, tried loading, a program that was not compatabile with the Win7, 6 bit systems so it crashed and it took me a while to get it all back together again.

Thanks for the help finding the cumin.  It turned out that our dictionary gave us a little misleading when it said the Polish word for cumin was cummin when actually it's kmin or kminek.  That name we have seen in all stores so it won't be a problem now to buy it but we appreciate all the help given by our readers.

In that line, does anyone know of a program, free, if possible, that allows you to write type on photos and save them.  For years I have been using Roxio's Easy Creator Media Center but it is not compatible to the new system yet so I'm kind of jumping through a lot of hoops to save my photos with names and dates on them.  These are the last ones I did but it took a lot to get them done.

Wczoraj nieobecność spowodowana była trochę przetapiać nowego systemu. I załadowany, próbował załadunku, program, który nie był compatabile z Win7, 6 bitowe systemy więc rozbił się i zajęło mi trochę czasu, aby to wszystko znów są razem.

9AM mass today in our local church and first just Joan and I sat on a 3 person bench.  Halfway through the service a little boy about 8 years old came and sat down next to Joan.  When it was time to greet your neighbors the little boy stuck out his hand to shake hands first with Joan and then with me.  It was a cute thing to do for him.  I wanted to just grab him and take him home :-)

In the afternoon we decided to go to Galeria Malta to see the movie "Social Network".  It was the story about how Facebook got started and the people involved with it.  It was interesting and if you use Facebook you should see it.

We passed by Aula U.A.M. and college building and were amazed at the transformation of the outside since the renovation.  The picture about is the way it was.  I didn't have my camera with me but will get a picture of the current view and post them both together at a later date.

9 rano dzisiaj masy naszego lokalnego Kościoła i tylko pierwszy Joan i ja siedzieliśmy na ławce 3 osoby. W połowie usługi chłopiec około 8 lat, przyszedł i usiadł obok Joan. Gdy nadszedł czas, aby pozdrowić sąsiadów chłopca sterczały rękę, aby uścisnąć dłoń pierwszego z Joan a następnie ze mną. To było słodkie rzeczy do zrobienia dla niego. Chciałem po prostu chwyć go i zabrać go do domu :-)

Shopping day.

Today I bought the SuperMemo for beginners of the Polish language for someone. I tried adding it to my laptop for use by Joan and I as a little diversion from our Intermediate level but it wouldn't load.  It kept telling me I needed Windows Media Player 7 or higher but I am using version 11 already so it should work.  Couldn't figure out how to correct the problem so I sent an email to SuperMemo and I'm sure they will reply with a fix for the problem on Monday.  They are excellent in their customer  service.

We went to Auchan today.  No, it's not a town, just another shopping center owned by a French company.  There are a few of them around Poznań.  We went there because Joan has had no success in trying to buy the spice Cumin in any of the stores we go to so we thought that maybe in Auchan they would have it.  They did not so the search continues.

Also I had to buy a toner cartridge for my Samsung printer and went to 3 stores before I found it.  It's a black and white printer and the cartridge costs 243zl. ($88).  Fortunately, it usually lasts me about 6 months. Prices are a little higher for ink.

Dzisiaj kupiłem SuperMemo dla początkujących z języka polskiego dla kogoś. Próbowałem dodać go do mojego laptopa do użytku przez Joan i ja jako mały odchodzenia od naszego poziomie średnio zaawansowanym, ale nie chciały się załadować. To mówili mi informację o konieczności Windows Media Player 7 lub wyższy, ale używam wersji 11 już tak powinno działać. Nie można dowiedzieć się, jak rozwiązać ten problem więc wysłałem maila do SuperMemo i jestem pewien, że odpowiedź z rozwiązaniem dla problemu w poniedziałek. Są doskonałe w ich obsługi klienta.


Poszliśmy do Auchan dziś. Nie, to nie miasto, tylko kolejne centrum handlowe należące do francuskiej firmy. Istnieje kilka z nich wokół Poznania. Pojechaliśmy tam, ponieważ Joan nie ma żadnych sukcesów w próbuje kupić przyprawy kminku w każdym ze sklepów idziemy więc pomyśleliśmy, że może w Auchan będą mieć. Nie szukaj więc dalej.

Również musiałem kupić kasety z tonerem do mojej drukarki Samsung i udał się do 3 sklepy przed znalazłem. Jest to czarno-biała drukarka i 243zl koszty kasety. ($ 88). Na szczęście trwa zwykle mnie około 6 miesięcy. Ceny są nieco wyższe na atrament.

Friday???

Friday? Today?  It sure doesn't feel like it.  Guess the Monday holiday threw the days out of whack. Next week is another two day holiday, the 11th and 12th so it will also feel a little strange.

We did watch the match last night between Lech Poznań and Manchester City, all 94 minutes of it but for us the only interesting part was the last four minutes of regular time when Lech scored two goals and, added to one earlier, they won the game 3-1.  It was a big deal for Poznań fans because City is one of the better teams.  We also watched the Polish girls volleyball team beat Costa Rica, 3 games to zero.  Big night for Polish sports.

Today was shopping day for us so we went to Real and spent 124zl for the week.  A strange thing happened during checkout.  The bill was 124.74 and we didn't have the change so gave the girl 150zl.  She didn't have any change in her cash register and so she just sat there expecting us to go and find the change. After telling her, 3 times, we didn't have the .74 in change a man behind us gave her the .74 and then she was able to give us the difference from the 150zl we gave her.  It never occured to her to ask another cashier for change.  Very strange or maybe she was just new.

Piątek? Dzisiaj? Na pewno nie na to ochotę. Zgadnij wakacje poniedziałek rzucił dni z walnięcie. W przyszłym tygodniu jest jeszcze dwa dni wakacji, 11 i 12 tak będzie również czuję się trochę dziwnie.


Zrobiliśmy oglądać mecz ostatniej nocy między Lechem Poznań i Manchester City, wszystkie 94 minut, ale tylko dla nas interesujący był w ostatnich czterech minutach regulaminowego czasu, gdy Lech strzelił dwa gole, a dodane do jednego wcześniej, ale wygrał 3-1. To była wielka sprawa dla fanów, ponieważ Poznań City jest jednym z lepszych zespołów. Również oglądałem Polska siatkówka dziewcząt zespół pokonał Kostarykę, 3 mecze do zera. Duża nocy polskiego sportu.

Dzisiaj było sprawunki dzień dla nas, więc poszliśmy do Realu i spędził 124zl za tydzień. Stało się coś dziwnego podczas realizacji transakcji. Ustawa została 124,74 i nie mieliśmy zmian, tak dał 150zł dziewczyna. Nie miała żadnych zmian w jej kasy i tak ona po prostu siedział oczekują od nas odejść i znaleźć zmiany. Po mówiąc jej, 3 razy, nie mają 0.74 w zmienić człowieka za nami dało jej 0,74 i była w stanie dać nam różnicy od 150zł daliśmy jej. Nigdy nie przyszło jej do głowy, aby zwrócić się do innego kasjera zmian. Bardzo dziwne, a może była po prostu nowe.

Crisis over.

8AM, laying in bed thinking about the past Nov. 1st event and the door buzzer rings.  Egads........who can that be at this hour of the morning.  I got up, went to the door and there stood a man in sport coat, turtleneck sweater, nice pants and a wrench, screwdriver and pliers in his hand.  It's the plumber!!

He came in, went over to the toilet, took off the faceplate, undid four screws, removed the shield protecting the inside where the pipes were, removed the flushing mechanism, scraped off all the crud that had accumulated on it, blew air through the pipe with his mouth, put it back in placed, turned on the water and pushed the button.  It flushed the first time so he did it again three more times and it worked perfectly.  25 minutes of labor, 50zl.  Problem solved, crisis over. YIPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!

8AM r. w łóżku myśląc o przeszłości 1 listopada zdarzenia i drzwi dzwoni brzęczyk. Egads ........ Kto to może być w tej godzinie rano. Wstałem, podszedł do drzwi i stanął człowiek w płaszcz sport, sweter z golfem, spodnie ładne i klucz, śrubokręt i kombinerki w ręku. To hydraulik!

Wszedł, poszedł do toalety, zdjął płyty czołowej, odpiął cztery śruby, zdjął osłonę ochrony domu, gdzie rury, usunięto mechanizm uderzenia gorąca, zeskrobuje wszystkie crud które zgromadziły się na to, wysadzili powietrza przez rury z jego ust, włóż ją z powrotem umieścić, zwrócił się na wodzie i pchnął przycisk. To zaczerwienienie po raz pierwszy tak się stało to znowu trzy razy i ono pracował idealnie. 25 minut pracy, 50zl. Problem rozwiązany, kryzys. YIPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Crisis #1,2098

I like the way these "mini" crisis's pop up in your life.  Today, for example, all of a sudden the toilet does not work.  When you push the button for the water to flush the toilet, nothing happens. Last night it worked just fine but today it decided to stop working.  Toilets are different in Europe than in America.  Meaning that all the parts to make it work are inside the wall behind the actual toilet not like in America where all the working parts are in a compartment behind a toilet.  I have no idea what is wrong so naturally all I could do was call Zbyszek and ask if he could recommend a plumber to come and fix it, quickly.  The man is suppose to come today or tomorrow about 7PM but who knows if he will show up.  In the mean time, we use a bucket filled with water to dump into the toilet bowl and flush the system.  Rather primitive, almost like when I live in Michigan and all I had was a toilet outside.  Oh well, it's not the end of life and we'll get through this latest adventure.

Yesterday went by so far and I miss it already.  It's such a beautiful thing to be in the cemetery at night with all the candles glowing, creating a special atmosphere.  For whatever reason, Joan and I have always like cemeteries and Nov. 1st is like the best time of the year to go to them.  On the way home last night we passed three cemeteries and the light from the candles was visible from the highway.

Lubię sposób w jaki te "mini" pop kryzys w swoim życiu. Dzisiaj, na przykład nagle WC nie działa. Po naciśnięciu przycisku na wodę do spłukiwania toalety, nic się nie dzieje. Ostatnia noc to działało dobrze, ale dziś postanowiłem przestać działać. Toalety są różne w Europie niż w Ameryce. Co oznacza, że wszystkie części, aby to działało znajdują się wewnątrz ściany za rzeczywiste WC nie tak jak w Ameryce, gdzie wszystkie części pracy są w schowku za toaletę. Nie mam pojęcia co jest nie tak tak naturalnie wszystko, co mogłem zrobić, to zadzwonić i zapytać, czy Zbyszek mógłby polecić hydraulik przyjść i go naprawić, szybko. Człowiek jest przypuszczać, aby się dziś lub jutro o godzina dziewiętnasta, ale kto wie, czy będzie on widoczny. W tym czasie, używamy wiadro wypełnione wodą do zrzutu do muszli klozetowej i montaż systemu. Dość prymitywne, prawie jak podczas Mieszkam w Michigan i wszystkie miałam WC na zewnątrz. No cóż, nie do końca życia, a my przez ten ostatni przygody.


Wczoraj minęło tak daleko i tęsknię już. To taka piękna rzecz się na cmentarzu w nocy wszystkie świece jarzące, tworząc wyjątkową atmosferę. Z jakiegoś powodu, Joan i ja zawsze jak cmentarze i 01 listopada jest jak najlepszy czas w roku, aby przejść do nich. W drodze do domu ostatniej nocy przeszliśmy cmentarzach i światło świec był widoczny z autostrady.

At last this beautiful day has arrived.  We were up at 8AM and got ready for the trip to Golina.  I had everything, candles, flowers, wreath, camera and rogale.  I knew traffic by the Miłwostowo cemetery would be bad so I decided to take the motorway to Wrzesnia and then back onto route 92.  It's called a motorway but in the U.S. it would be called a tollway because you have to pay to use it.  Last year it cost 11zl to travel the 60km to the Wrzesnia but they have raised it now to 12zl.  We hardly ever use it because I prefer route 92 that takes us though the small towns and past the village of my great grandmother.

We arrive about 11AM at the cemetery, laid down the flowers. candles and wreath on the grave of Ludwika and Genowefa then went to the grave of cousin Kazia's husband, Roman, to pay our respect.  The next stop was the grave of Jagoda, wife of cousin Ambroży, who died last year.  To our surprise, cousin Ambroży was there with his two brothers, Ireneusz and Bogdan.  I saw them last year but they live a far distance away from Golina so seeing them is always a treat.  We talked for a little bit and Ambroży invited us to his house for obiad (Lunch) later in the afternoon.  We said goodbye and went to cousin Kazia's house.

The rogale I bought yesterday were for her and her family so I presented them to her when we walked in.  After coffee and pastries and a little conversation, she served us lunch, the first of the day.  We talked about her sister Anna and I decided to call her to see if we could go there for a short visit.

Anna was home with her husband, Eugeniusz and we visted for about a half hour, talking about her family and what everyone was doing in their lives.  It was time to go so we walked to cousin Ambroży's house where he and his brothers were with their wives. Ambroży's son Paweł was there with his wife Joanna, daughter Natalia and son Wojceich. A few other relatives were there and we met, for the first time, Aleksandra Mejer, daughter of Ireneusz.  It was thrilling to meet her, she spoke English and we spent some time talking.  It was even more exciting when I learned she was a student, studying and living in Poznań so another new, to me, cousin was found. I hope we will have more contact with her in the future.

Another obiad was served and even though Joan and I were already full of food we made room for a little more.  That's the thing about holidays in Poland, don't eat for two days before they begin because when they do there is more food than you can possibly eat.  After obiad we took a walk to the cemetary and I showed the brothers the grave of my great grandmother, Ludwika, because she is the ancestor we have in common.

The walk over, we said goodbye to them and went back to cousin Kazia's house to talk some more and later her daughter, Hania, and granddaughter, Justyna, came in to visit.  It's been a while since we have seen Justyna and I was amazed at how much her English has improved.  She speaks now without having to think to much about how to say words and they flow out much more easier. 

Finally at 7PM, it was time to leave to make the journey back to Poznań so we said goodbye and now look forward to our next visit.

W końcu ten piękny dzień przyjechał. Byliśmy nawet na 8 i przygotowywał się do podróży do Golina. Miałem wszystko, świece, kwiaty, wieniec, aparat fotograficzny i Rogale. Wiedziałem, że ruch przy cmentarzu Miłwostowo byłoby źle, więc postanowiłem jechać autostradą do Wrześni, a następnie z powrotem na szlak 92. To się nazywa autostrady, ale w USA to nazwać Tollway bo trzeba płacić z niego korzystać. W ubiegłym roku koszt 11zł podróżować 60 km do Wrześni, ale muszą podnieść go teraz do 12zl. My rzadko go używają, bo wolą szlak 92, który zabierze nas choć małych miast i wsi w przeszłości moja prababcia.

Dojeżdżamy o 11AM na cmentarzu, ustanowione kwiaty. świece i kwiaty na grobie Ludwika i Genowefa następnie udał się na grób męża kuzynki Kazi, Roman zapłacić na nasz szacunek. Następnym przystankiem był grób Jagoda, żona kuzyna Ambroży, który zmarł w zeszłym roku. Ku naszemu zaskoczeniu, kuzyna Ambroży był tam z dwoma braćmi, Ireneusz i Bogdan. Widziałem ich w ubiegłym roku, ale żyją znacznie oddalony od Golina więc widząc w nich jest zawsze w leczeniu. Rozmawialiśmy trochę i Ambroży zaprosił nas do swojego domu na obiad (lunch) później w godzinach popołudniowych. Pożegnaliśmy się i poszedł do domu kuzyna Kazia's.

Rogale kupiłem wczoraj były dla niej i jej rodziny tak przedstawiłem je do niej, gdy wszedł po kawę i ciasto i rozmowy mało, służyła nam lunch, pierwszy dzień. Rozmawialiśmy o jej siostra Anna i postanowiłem zadzwonić do niej, czy może tam pojechać na krótką wizytę.

Anna był w domu z mężem, Eugeniusz, a my odwiedziłeś na około pół godziny, rozmawiając o swojej rodzinie i wszystkim, co robił w swoim życiu. Nadszedł czas, aby przejść więc poszliśmy do domu kuzyna Ambroży, gdzie on i jego bracia z żonami. Ambroży jest Paweł syn był tam z żoną Joanna, córka Natalia i syn Wojceich. Kilka innych krewnych tam byli, i spotkaliśmy się, po raz pierwszy, Aleksandra Mejer, córka Ireneusza. Emocjonujące było spotkanie z nią, mówiła po angielsku i spędziliśmy trochę czasu na rozmowy. To było jeszcze bardziej ekscytująca, kiedy dowiedziała się, że student studiuje i mieszka w Poznaniu to kolejny nowy dla mnie kuzyn został znaleziony. Mam nadzieję, że będziemy mieć więcej kontaktu z nią w przyszłości.

Kolejny obiad został doręczony i nawet Joan i ja byłem już pełne jedzenia zrobiliśmy miejsce na trochę więcej. To jest coś o wakacjach w Polska, nie jeść przez dwa dni, zanim zaczną bo gdy oni jest więcej żywności niż można ewentualnie zjeść. Po obiad Poszliśmy na spacer na cmentarz i pokazałem braci grobu mojego wielkiego babki Ludwika, ponieważ jest ona przodkiem mamy wspólnego.

Chodzić na, pożegnaliśmy się z nimi i wrócił do domu kuzyna Kazia do rozmowy kilka i później jej córka, Hania, i wnuczka, Justyna, przyszedł z wizytą. To było dawno widzieliśmy Justyna i byłem zaskoczony, jak wiele jej angielsku. Mówi się teraz, bez myślenia o tym, jak dużo do powiedzenia słowa i płyną obecnie o wiele prostsze.

Wreszcie przy 7PM, nadszedł czas, aby opuścić, aby podróż do Poznania więc pożegnaliśmy się i teraz czekamy na naszą kolejną podróż.

I didn't mention it earlier but the cemetery was beautiful.  It' such a special time of the year, or special day of the year when the place is filled with people all day long and the nightime, with all the candle lit is the most beautiful time.  The pictures don't really do justice to this day.  The ones in the slideshow with the time stamp on them were taken by cousin Andrzej.

I nie powiedziałam tego wcześniej, ale na cmentarzu było piękne. To taki specjalny czas w roku, lub specjalne dni w roku, kiedy to miejsce jest pełne ludzi przez cały dzień i nightime, wszystkie świecach to najpiękniejszy czas. Zdjęcia naprawdę nie sprawiedliwości do dnia dzisiejszego. Te, w pokazie slajdów ze znacznikiem czasu na nich były zrobione przez kuzyna Andrzej.

Here they are in all their beauty, Rogale.  I bought these this morning in Kandulski's.  Don't they look good?  Delicious!

I picked up the flowers from cousin Maryla's for Golina and she gave me a wreath to put on the grave of our mutual great grandmother and great aunt.  I passed by 3 cemetaries on the way and they were filled with people and the police were everywhere directing traffic.  I'm getting excited about tomorrow's trip.

Oto one w całej ich urody, Rogale. Kupiłem te dziś rano w Kandulski's. Czy oni nie wyglądają dobrze? Pyszne!


Podniosłem kwiaty od kuzyna Maryli do Golina i dała mi wieniec postawić na grobie naszego wspólnego wielkiego babcia i ciotka świetnie. Minąłem 3 cmentarze na drodze i były pełne ludzi i policji były wszędzie kierowania ruchem. Dostaję podekscytowani jutrzejszym podróży.

Ogród Autumn

Beautiful day!  We started by buying flowers for Monday at cousin Maryla's shop, then went to the Botanical gardens to see the colors of autumn there.  It was a good day for being outside, brisk, clean, sunny and warm.  We walked all over the place and saw as many beautifully colored items of nature as you could want.  This is a good place to go to because it's not full of tourists since it's too far from the main part of town but still not far at all.  It takes us ten minutes by car and when we lived in Gruńwald we use to walk there.  Walking there was nice because we went by the cemetary and this time of year it is also pretty with colors.  Of course, today the cemetary was full of people cleaning headstones, putting flowers and candles, preparing for Monday.

After two hours in the garden we went to Poznań Plaza, to Piotr & Pawel, because Joan was looking for the spice "cumin" but she didn't find it.  As we approached the Plaza we went over the last speed bump, entered the plaza underground parking lot and then started hearing........thump, thump. thump.  When I sped up it got faster.  I knew, or I thought I knew, I had my first flat tire in Poland.  We found a spot to park and I got out to look at the tires.  All of them looked OK but I knew something was wrong.

Great!! Monday we were suppose to drive to Golina and no shops were open Sunday or Monday to fix whatever the problem was.  We finished shopping, started driving back home and the thumping continued.  When we got home I did a closer inspection of the tires and found the head of a bolt stick above the tire tracks on the left rear tire.  I took a screwdriver and tried to pry it out but it would not move.  Next I took a pair of pliers and try to pull it out but it still wouldn't move.  Lastly, I took the pliers and turned the head of the bolt  and when I did that the air started to come out so I quickly reversed the process.  So I thought I would just take off the tire and replace it with the spare tire.  That's when I found out the spare was only to be used to get the car to a repair facility and not to exceed 80km per hour.  This wouldn't do and I was freaking out.

I called the shop where I had my tires changed on Wednesday to see if they could fix the tire but learned they were closed until Tuesday.  The owner said to look on the internet for Novax.pl because they were a tire store and repair place and he thought they would be opened today.

I found them on Google Maps, they have 5 places in Poznań and were open until 5PM.  It was now 3:30PM so I made a copy of the map, got in the car and went to see them. I searched for half an hour but couldn't find the shop.  Finally I stopped a passer by and asked her if she knew the place of the address I had.  She did and it turned out to be on the complete opposite area of the map.  I jumped into the car, followed her directions and got there at 4:15PM.

I told the attendent there what my problem was, he told me to pull into the shop and in half an hour later the tire was repaired and I was on my way home.  It was a stressfull 3 hours because I thought our trip to Golina was in jeopardy and I didn't want to miss it.  It's a very special day, Nov. 1st.

Piękny dzień! Zaczęliśmy od zakupu kwiatów na poniedziałek w sklepie kuzyna Maryli, a następnie udał się do ogrodu botanicznego, aby zobaczyć kolory jesieni tam. To był dobry dzień dla niezwiązany, szybki, czysty, słoneczny i ciepły. Szliśmy w każdym miejscu i widział tyle pięknie kolorowe elementy natury, jak można chcieć. To jest dobre miejsce, aby przejść do bo to nie jest pełne turystów, ponieważ jest to zbyt daleko od głównej części miasta, ale nadal nie chodzi w ogóle. To przenosi nas dziesięć minut samochodem i kiedy zamieszkaliśmy w Grunwaldem używamy do chodzenia tam. Zwiedzanie nie było dobre, bo pojechaliśmy na cmentarz i tej porze roku jest to również bardzo z kolorami. Oczywiście, dziś cmentarz był pełen ludzi sprzątanie nagrobków, stawianie kwiatów i zniczy, przygotowując się do poniedziałku.


Po dwóch godzinach w ogrodzie poszliśmy do Poznań Plaza, aby Piotr i Paweł, ponieważ Joan szukał spice "kmin" ale nie znaleźliśmy go. Gdy zbliżyliśmy się do Plaza poszliśmy w ciągu ostatnich bump prędkości, wjechał na plac parkingu podziemnego, a następnie rozpoczął przesłuchanie ........ uderzenie, uderzenie. uderzenie. Zakończyliśmy zakupy, rozpoczął jazdy z powrotem do domu i walić dalej. Kiedy wróciliśmy do domu zrobiłem bliższym opon i stwierdziła głowę kijem śruby nad oponą utworów z lewej tylnej opony. Wziąłem śrubokręt i próbował podważyć ją, ale nie byłoby przenieść. Następnie wziąłem kombinerek i spróbuj go wyciągnąć, ale nadal nie przejdzie. Wreszcie, wziąłem kombinerki i odwrócił głowę śruby i kiedy nie, że powietrze zaczęło wychodzić, więc szybko odwrócić ten proces. Więc pomyślałem, że po prostu się opony i zastąpienie go koło zapasowe. Powiedziałem tam, co mój opiekun był problem, powiedział mi ciągnąć do sklepu, w pół godziny później był naprawiany opony i byłem w drodze do domu. To był stresujących 3 godziny, bo myślałem naszej podróży do Golina było w niebezpieczeństwie i nie chcę tego przegapić. Jest to bardzo specjalny dzień, 1 listopada.

Surprised!

We talked so much about the Rogale yestereday that I decided to make a stop at Kandulski's today to buy a few to take home and, much to our surprise, there was Zbyszek. He stopped by for a coffee and we just happened to be there at the same time so we had rogale and coffee together.

One of the special light bulbs burned out in the bathroom and the only place that sells them, that I know of, is Castorama so we had to go there today as well as doing our weekly shopping.  At Real we spent 120 zl for food and bought candles for graves in Golina.  Tomorrow I will go to cousin Maryla's flower shop and have her make a bouquet for great grandmother Ludwika and great aunt, Genowefa's grave.  This year I plan to take my tri-pod for the camera with me so the night photos turn out better than last year.  We'll have to leave a little earlier than normal for this trip because traffic around the Miłostowo cemetary will be very heavy and will take us longer to drive past it.  There are ususally cars parked on both sides of the road as well as on the island between the lanes.  Police coverage of all roads will be much heavier than normal to try to prevent accidents from speeders.

Rozmawialiśmy dużo o yestereday Rogale, że postanowiłem się zatrzymać w Kandulski do dzisiaj kupić kilka do domu i, ku naszemu zdziwieniu, nie było Zbyszek. Zatrzymał się przy na kawę i po prostu się tam w tym samym czasie, więc musieliśmy Rogale i kawy razem.


Jedną ze specjalnych żarówek spalił się w łazience i jedynym miejscem, które sprzedaje je, to wiem, to Castorama tak mieliśmy tam dzisiaj, jak również sposób nasze tygodniowe sprawunki. Na Real wydaliśmy 120 zł na żywność i kupił świece na grobach w Golina. Jutro pójdę do kwiaciarni kuzyn Maryli i jej zrobić bukiet dla wielkiego babki Ludwika i ciotka wielki, poważny Genowefy. W tym roku plan na moje tri-pod aparatu ze mną tak, nocne zdjęcia okazać się lepsze niż w zeszłym roku. Just making preparations for our trip to Golina on Monday.  If you look at the "You are in Poznan" and scroll down to the fourth article you can read about this day in Poland, how it is celebrated and what it means.

Another important day is Nov. 11th, St. Martins day.  It is also a big day of celebration and is on the same page. In Poznan, on November 11 - you can buy a special tidbit recently entered into the register of protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications in the European Union. Rogal of półfrancuskiego dough has come back to the pagan times, when sacrifices dough, wrapped in the shape of  horns. It's called Rogale.

The ingredients in the crescent is strictly enforced, and every baker who wants  to prepare croissants, must obtain a special certificate. Filling crescent is highly characteristic and consists of  white poppy seeds, vanilla, crushed dates or figs, raisins and orange peel. Every year, in Poznan citizens eat up to 300 tons of these characteristic and delicious croissants.

New

One of Joan's orchids that has been dormant for some time finally came back to life and gave us these new flowers.  It's a very unusual looking orchid but brightens up the room with it's yellow color.

Sunday, Monday

Sunday passed uneventfully into Monday with the only thing happening that was strange was church.  We couldn't make our usual morning mass so we planned to go to the 4:30PM one.  Both, the church website and the schedule in front of the church, said there was one at that time so we went.  We arrived 10 minutes early to a dark, unoccupied building, with no one there and no mass.  I don't know what happened but we waited and then left, dissapointed.

Monday we watched two movies om DVD,  P.S. I Love You and Slumdog Millionaire.  The better of the two was P.S. I love you.  Joan made a new supper for us, Fettucine Alfredo.  It was the first time she made it and it was good.  A friend told me a new joke going round Poznań about the notorious NFZ, the national health system.  Notorious in the sense that sometimes you have to wait years for a non-essential operation.  The joke is that now NFZ is going to pay for abortions................you just have to wait a year for it.  This is only a joke, it is not really going to pay for them.

Niedziela przeszedł się doszło w poniedziałek tylko dzieje się to, co było dziwne było kościoła. Nie może być dla naszej zwykle masa rano tak planowaliśmy, aby przejść do 16:30 jeden. Poniedziałek mamy oglądałem dwa filmy DVD om, postscriptum Kocham cię i Slumdog. Lepiej z nich był postscriptum Kocham cię. Joan zrobiła nową kolacja dla nas, Fettucine Alfredo. To było po raz pierwszy zrobiła to i to było dobre. Znajomy powiedział mi nowy żart dzieje wokół Poznania notorycznie NFZ, krajowego systemu opieki zdrowotnej. Notorious w tym sensie, że czasem trzeba czekać rok na operację niż istotne. Żart, że teraz NFZ zapłaci za aborcje ................ po prostu trzeba czekać rok na to. To tylko żart, to nie jest tak naprawdę będzie za nie zapłacić.
