Changes.

I think the Dittenbers are all safely back at home now after enjoying an incredible experience in Poland. For some it was their first visit. For Marilyn Rajewski Mapes, it was not. Her first visit was in 1984 when Poland had the old governing system of the Soviet Union. She can see the tremendous changes since the downfall of that regime. During our talk last Friday night she told me how she viewed Poland in 1984 and how she views it now, there is a big, positive, difference.  I can only see it from 2003, our first visit, when the new system was in place, but even now in 2018 there is a big difference from 2003.There are those who will disagree and say the only difference is the rich are richer and the poor are poorer. There is no doubt the big cities have benefited the most and the small villages, especially in the east, have not.  However, we have revisited many small villages we saw in 2008-2010 and now the gray houses are painted in colors, the streets are in better condition and have street signs, there are rondo's where needed and some have small shopping centers. So even in some villages there is a benefit.

I met with Radek today and first we talked about the difference genes make in the make-up of humans regarding height and appearance. Then before our normal time we starting talking about Spanish grammar and the use of "was". There are 2 words for "was" in Spanish, era and fuí. Each has an almost definite meaning but can be inter-changed. It takes a little studying to know when to use which. I don't meet him again until next Tuesday because he is going to Warsaw for a Tango event so I have time to study about these two meanings.

 Myślę, że Dittenberowie są bezpieczni w domu po tym, jak cieszyli się niesamowitym doświadczeniem w Polsce. Dla niektórych była to ich pierwsza wizyta. Dla Marilyn Rajewski Mapes nie. Jej pierwsza wizyta miała miejsce w 1984 roku, kiedy w Polsce był stary system rządów Związku Radzieckiego. Widziała ogromne zmiany od czasu upadku tego reżimu. Podczas naszej rozmowy w zeszły piątek wieczorem powiedziała mi, jak postrzegała Polskę w 1984 roku i jak teraz ją postrzega, jest duża, pozytywna różnica. Widzę to tylko od 2003 r., od naszej pierwszej wizyty, kiedy nowy system już trwał, ale nawet teraz w 2018 r. jest duża różnica od 2003 r. Są tacy, którzy nie zgadzają się i mówią, że jedyna różnica polega na tym, że bogaci są bogatsi i biedni są biedniejsi. Nie ma wątpliwości, że największe miasta skorzystały najbardziej, a małe wioski, szczególnie na wschodzie, nie. Jednak odwiedziliśmy wiele małych wiosek, które widzieliśmy w latach 2008-2010, kiedy szare domy zostały pomalowane, ulice są w lepszym stanie i mają znaki drogowe, pojawiły się ronda, a niektóre wsie mają małe centra handlowe. Więc nawet w część wiosek odniosła korzyść.

Dzisiaj spotkałem się z Radkiem i najpierw rozmawialiśmy o różnicach w genach, które
charakteryzują ludzi pod względem wzrostu i wyglądu. Potem, przed naszym normalnym czasem zaczęliśmy mówić o gramatyce hiszpańskiej i używaniu słowa "był". Istnieją 2 słowa "był" w języku hiszpańskim, ery i fuí. Każde ma niemal konkretne znaczenie, ale może być zamienione. To wymaga trochę nauki, aby wiedzieć, kiedy je używać. Nie spotkam się z nim ponownie do następnego wtorku, ponieważ jedzie do Warszawy na maraton tango, więc mam czas, aby przestudiować te dwa znaczenia.
