Christmas present.

Occasionally, when I have a little free time, I go though an old box of records or documents just to remind myself all I have learned doing family research.

Last night was one such time. In among some documents I found something my brother Wally wrote to me attached to a Christmas present. It was Christmas Eve,  December 24th, 1973. The present was a hand made fishing rod for fly fishing. There has to be a preamble to this story.

My father was an avid fly fisherman. So much so that before my sister was born, that room was only used as a room where he had a table set up to make his own fly lures using a hook and different kinds of little feathers or metal objects. Because our parents were divorced shortly after I was born, we really didn't see him until our teenage years were happening. Perhaps my brother learned how to do it from someone else or on his own.

Anyway, he(my brother) loved fly fishing. When I was 13-14 he took me to Manistee, Michigan to fish his favorite river, the Little Manistee. It was the first time in my life that I experienced seeing water so clean, you could see the bottom of it. I asked him if the river was full of rust. Laughing, he told me it was the bottom of the river. I had an excellent adventure with him and I'm sure it influenced my love for nature.

I don't know how long it took for him to make that fishing rod, but just the idea he made it for me was a huge Christmas present in itself. I think of him all the time and miss him tremendously.

Od czasu do czasu, gdy mam troch臋 wolnego czasu, przegl膮dam stare pude艂ko z zapisami lub dokumentami, aby przypomnie膰 sobie wszystko, czego nauczy艂em si臋 podczas bada艅 rodzinnych.

Wczorajszy wiecz贸r by艂 jednym z takich moment贸w. W艣r贸d dokument贸w znalaz艂em co艣, co m贸j brat Wally napisa艂 do mnie w prezencie 艣wi膮tecznym. By艂a Wigilia, 24 grudnia 1973 roku. Prezentem by艂a r臋cznie wykonana w臋dka do 艂owienia na much臋. Ta historia wymaga wst臋pu.

M贸j ojciec by艂 zapalonym w臋dkarzem muchowym. Poniewa偶 nasi rodzice rozwiedli si臋 wkr贸tce po moich narodzinach, tak naprawd臋 nie widzieli艣my go a偶 do naszych nastoletnich lat. By膰 mo偶e m贸j brat nauczy艂 si臋 tego od kogo艣 innego lub sam.

W ka偶dym razie on (m贸j brat) uwielbia艂 w臋dkarstwo muchowe. Kiedy mia艂em 13-14 lat, zabra艂 mnie do Manistee w stanie Michigan na swoj膮 ulubion膮 rzek臋, Little Manistee. To by艂 pierwszy raz w moim 偶yciu, kiedy zobaczy艂em wod臋 tak czyst膮, 偶e mo偶na by艂o zobaczy膰 jej dno. Zapyta艂em go, czy rzeka jest pe艂na rdzy. 艢miej膮c si臋, powiedzia艂 mi, 偶e to dno rzeki. Prze偶y艂em z nim wspania艂膮 przygod臋 i jestem pewien, 偶e wp艂yn臋艂o to na moj膮 mi艂o艣膰 do natury.

Nie wiem, ile czasu zaj臋艂o mu zrobienie tej w臋dki, ale sam pomys艂, 偶e zrobi艂 j膮 dla mnie, by艂 wielkim prezentem 艣wi膮tecznym. Ca艂y czas o nim my艣l臋 i bardzo za nim t臋skni臋.
