SS Check

We got our bank statement today. I was surprised to see my SS check was already in it. They said I wouldn't recieve my first check until the 4th week of July, the same time for Joan's, but I already have one for June. A nice surprise!!

Tomorrow we go back to Citibank because I learned we can have our Polish Citibank account set up here before we even get there. That will be helpful because then we can wire transfer our retirement savings to Poland for $40 and it will be there when we arrive next Friday, August 3rd.

For anyone who is thinking about moving to Poland I would suggest that you start planning at least a year ahead of time. There are a large amount of things you must have completed before you make this adventure. It will take time to acquire the documents you need. It's not just the paperwork but what to take with you and what to leave behind and how to dispose of the stuff left behind. For the last two months we have been selling and giving away the "leave behinds" and now we are down to a bed, 1 recliner, computer system. TV and antique French Desk.

Yesterday we gave away the remaining dishes, pots, pans, glasses, nightstands, table lamps and pictures to Joan's son, Joey. We're going to be building a new life in Poland of furniture, dishes, etc and that will be quite a new experieince. When we've moved in the past from one place to another we just transfered our belongings from one place to another, but this is totally different.
Here's Joan, with the family tree taken off the walls and mailed to Poland. It's a little different now sitting in the apartment, with no pictures on the walls, everything packed and shipped and knowing that in only 10 days we will be in Poland, land of my ancestors. Not as visitors this time, like before, but like my great grandfather Józef Kazmierczak when he came to America to start a completely new life. We exchange countries for different reasons. I think he came to America with his sons so they would not be forced to serve 25 years in the Russian Army, the country that occupied his part of Poland at the time and I go to Poland to know my family there, to live an easier life, if that is possible with the all the changes in Poland now. For me, I have the added comfort of a wife who is in total agreement with this idea and comes with me. For my great grandfather, his wife remained in Poland because he died before she could come to America and it is because of this that I have such a large family in Poland now. Of course, I never knew these ancestors but standing at the grave of my great grandmother Ludwika in Golina, I felt the connection.

Closer!!

Two weeks from tomorrow and we're off to Poland. I've been reading from different lists I belong to about things in Poland, the gas is almost $6 a gallon now, the US dollar has been losing value for the last 10 days and prices in most areas are going up. All not good things for us. The good news is we recieved our payments from our retirement fund, received the final copy of my birth certificate and got our Citibank account together. I've been looking at apartments in Konin, about an hour west of Poznań and closer to Golina and they are somewhat cheaper to rent so we may check them out as well as Poznań. Unfortunately, money will play a role in where we live for now, there's no way around it. But either place will give us a completely new life style with the same challenges so it's not a big thing for us. Poznań, being bigger, has more to offer in cultural activities, opportunities, etc but Konin seemed as nice when we were there last in 2004. We'll see what happens once we arrive.

HP Stays!

After working with the new Vista operating system, and buying a "Windows Vista for Dummies" book, I figured out how to do the things I need on this new machine and will keep it. I probably could have gotten by with the 15" screen but the 17" is easier to read.

We're studying Polish many more hours each day now that we are retired. For the last year I've been using an Internet service, tvpolonia.com, that gives me access to Polish programs like news, music, soap opera's, talk shows and history. Some have English subtitles and I've been able to use them for listening to and learning the language. The cost is only $7 a month and it has been well worth the price. I just stopped the service for the end of July because I think we will be too busy in Poland to view it. Of course, all of those shows will be on our TV in Poland :-)

Our last 3 weekends are booked with farewells, two more "Retirement Parties" from our friends and cleaning out our apartment.

Yesterday we went to Indiana to get the long copy of my birth certificate, stopped at the cemetary where most of the relatives are, visited with an old friend, and got our last pizza from John's Pizzeria. They have a carry out service in Muenster, Indiana.

Time is passing quickly now, only 20 days to go.

Hats OFF!!!!!!

Hats off to the FBI. When the normal time for an FBI background check takes 4-5 months, with the letter I sent begging them to conduct the check quicker because we were leaving soon, today we received our clearances from them. It took less than one month and now we have all the paper work we need to file for temporary residency in Poland.

On another note, I bought an HP Pavilion laptop yesterday, with the new Windows Vista operating system and I am not at all happy with it. It has changed considerably from Windows XP and I find the changes not compatabile with what I need. I am going to work with the new system for a few days to see if I can overcome the changes but if I can't I will return it and just buy a regular PC in Poland with Windows XP.

Today Joan's daughter came with the grandkids and we went to our bank to put here on our account so that she will be able to pay whatever remaining bills we have once we leave. Things like the last electric bill, phone bill, internet bill, etc. It was great to see them all and the visit didn't last long enough. Gonna miss her and the kids but we have already put the seed of coming to Poland in their heads.

IRS returned

We received our clearance letters from the IRS today along with a letter saying we don't have to pay dual taxes on our Social Security checks because of the agreement between the U.S. and Poland. It only took two weeks to get the letter when we were told it could take 45 days. Now we are waiting for the clearance letter from the FBI that is suppose to take 4-5 months. Maybe the letter I sent with the fingerprints asking them to expedite the "investigation" will have some bearing on when we get the letter. Maybe Not.

We sold one recliner to Joan's daughter, gave away the kitchen table and chairs to her son and disposed of some shelving yesterday.

Talked with cousin Luka's husband about whether to buy a laptop here or wait until we get to Poland. I don't know a lot about laptops, except they are 40% more expenisve in Poland and I'm not sure I want a laptop. I'm used to the 23" screen monitor I have now and the thought of a 15" screen doesn't really appeal to me. Regular desktop PC's in Poland are 20% more expensive.

July 4th, 2007

In the morning Joan's son, Joey, came and took our kitchen table, chairs and the remainng glassware from our place. Next week they will take the remaining two nights stands and lamps. We're down to 2 recliners, bed, desk, computer and TV.

Afterwards we went to Joan's daughter Karen's house and spent the 4th with them at a parade and cookout.

Retired!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, it's true. The wonderfull day arrived and we have retired.

I was taken out to lunch for a final farewell with the people I have worked most closely with over the last couple of years and some that I have worked with for 10 years. It was excellent. the food was deliciouis and I had the best calamari since I lived in Spain, some 40 years ago. Unfortuntely, Joan worked in a different department and could not attend the lunch with me.

We took our last train ride home from work and instead of studying our Polish like we normally did everyday, we just looked at the sites along the way.

Now the weekend of our lives begins, with NO Mondays to worry about getting ready for.

Happy, Happy, Happy!!!!!

Today was the retirement party for Joan in her department.

Apartment

Today cousin Luka looked at the apartment. It looks nice but the price is almost $800 a month, almost the same in the United States and too expensive for us. Cousin Krzysztof Kupinski gave me a website to look at for apartments in Konin and they are cheaper. Konin is about 1 hour east of Poznan. The interesting thing about this site is that is also lists a house for sale in Golina, home of our ancestors. It is a two bedroom house for $50,000 USD. I have asked him and Andrzej to find out more about it. We did not want to buy a house when we first arrived but the cost of apartments and houses has risen so much since Poland joined the EU that, maybe, we should look at this place.

Apartment2

Luka emailed me today that she has an appointment with the agent for renting the apartment she told us about. It is on Kolska street, just around the corner from her house. We are excited about it because if we can afford it, it would be so close to her. She will see the agent on Monday at 9:30 AM and ask all the questions I have asked her about this place. She will also take pictures so we can "see" the apartment.

One thing I wanted to say is that we have shipped everything to Poland including CD's of software I use. One of those CD's was the translation program from English to Polish and today I received a message that our translation program needs to be updated and for that we must insert the CD. We do not have that CD now so we will not be able to use it for translations I use for our blog. So...until we arrive in Poland, there will be no further messages in our Blog in Polish.

Apartment

Our cousin, Małgosia (Luka), sent us an email today about a house that was bought by a Polish couple who have renovated it into apartments. It is only 2 minutes from her house and we have asked her to look at the apartments and tell us what she thinks about them. It would be nice to be close to family. We are not sure of the size of the apartment because in Poland they do not say it is a two or three bedroom apartment. They say it is a two or three room apartment but that usually means a bathroom, kitchen and two other rooms to be used as you want but we are still not sure so Luka will tell us. It is in an old house so the rooms may be bigger than in the newer apartment buildings. We'll wait for her answer.

To byłoby miłe by być blisko rodziny.

FBI & IRS

We took our last vacation day off from work and went to the local police department to have our fingerprints taken so we could submit them to the FBI, along with a letter stating why we wanted to have a background check done. The cost for the background check was $18.00 each and it will take 16-18 weeks for them to complete it. We will have the results sent to Joan’s daughter’s address and then she will FEDEX them to us in Poland.

In the afternoon we went to a local Internal Revenue office to find out what form we needed to fill out so we can have a letter from the IRS saying we don’t own any money to the U.S. Government. Poland now requires both letters, along with birth certificate, marriage license and valid passport before you can apply for a temporary residency permit. This will take 45 days and will also be sent to Joan’s daughter. So it seems our application for the permit will be delayed. We thought we could apply as soon as we had and apartment and bank account in Poznan. Because you can only stay in Poland for 90 days without a visa, we will have to leave after 90 days and then return. But I understand we just have to cross the border and then return for another 90 days, by that time we should have our clearances.

To zajmie 45 dni i też będzie wysłane córce Joan.

Good News/Bad News

Well, the good news is that we did sell our car to a fellow worker who will wait untill the end of july to take posession.
The bad news is that I learned from someone who moved to Poland last year that we will need a clearance of crime from the FBI and a letter from the Internal Revenue Service that we do not owe the U.S. Government any money. It is not good news because it will take 4-5 months for the FBI letter to be given to us. I don't know why it would take so long but that is what I have been told. The problem for us is that you can only stay in Poland for 3 months unless you have a visa along with your passport. We have only a passport so this could be a big problem. We can't apply for our temporary residency permit in Poland until we have the FBI and IRS clearance letters. I spoke to an FBI agent today and he said we need to have our fingerprints taken by the local police, a cover letter that tells why we need this clearance and a $36 money order to cover the cost. Then we mail it into the FBI office in Virginia and wait. I couldn't get a hold of the IRS offices so we will have to go to our local one and find out what we need to do and how long that will take. I thought I had everything taken care of before we mailed everything we had to Poland but evidently I didn't. I'lm feelinlg a little stressed now.

Wtedy wysyłamy to do biura FBI w Wirginii i czekamy.

It's too late, baby!!

I woke up this morning at 6:30AM and went to the local van rental place, U-Haul, to pick up the cargo van we would use to move all 40 of our boxes to Doma shipping. At first when I had put the 4 biggest boxes in the van I thought I had made a mistake with too small a vehicle. Fortunately it turned out I was right and we were able to get ALL 40 boxes into the van. I packed the van and drove to Doma at 10AM. Doma is always busy with people shipping packages to Poland but when we arrived with our large quantity of boxes it slowed the process down for other customers and they had to wait while our packages were weighed, scan codes put on them and Doma shipping tape put on all boxes. This process took two and a half hours so we were done about 12:30PM. It averaged out to about $30 a box, $1,200 in total cost. A little cheaper than I thought it would cost. The clerk said it would take 6 to 8 weeks to get there. I'm hoping it is the 8 week estimate so that we are there when they arrive and already have an apartment. Maybe we can pay the delivery men a little extra to take them directly to our apartment instead of delivering them to Luka's house.

But it's done. We have nothing left to take with us except our clothes. Now there is no turning back.
Budziłem się dzisiaj rano o 6:30AM i poszedł do miejscowego miejsca czynszu wozu , U Ciągnienia, by podnieść wóz ładunku, którego użylibyśmy ruszyć wszystkie 40 z naszych pudełek do Doma morskiego. Zapakowałem wóz i popędziłem do Doma do 10AM. Doma jest zawsze zajęty z ludźmi morskimi paczki do Polski ale kiedy przybywaliśmy z naszą dużą ilością pudełek to zwalniało proces dla innych klientów i oni musieli czekać podczas gdy nasze paczki były ważone, kody klawisza kładą na nich i Doma morskim taśmę kładą na wszystkich pudełkach. Ten proces zajął dwie i pół godziny tak byliśmy zrobieni około 12:30PM. To wyniosło przeciętnie do około $30 pudełko, $1,200 w koszcie łącznym.
Mamy niczemu nie opuszczać by wziąć z nami z wyjątkiem naszego ubrania. Teraz nie mają żadnych zawracania z drogi.

Party

Today was the day of my retirement party at work. 2 weeks early but nice of them to do that for me.

Drivers Permit

Today I made a trip to the local AAA Motor Club to apply for the Internatioinal Drivers Permit. In 2004 when I wanted an IDL, I could purchase it online but security has changed since then and now you must apply for it locally with your state drivers license and two pictures. Inside are pages in many different languages, except Polish. I thought that was rather strange since I will use the Permit in Poland. Interestingly enough, the lady who took my application was Polish, from a small town east of Krakow. She hadn't been back to Poland in many years and was very surprised when she asked how long we would be staying. I told her we were moving there and she said she had never met anyone from the U.S. who was moving to Poland but many who had moved from Poland to the U.S.

So, another items checked off from the list of things to do before we move. I reserved an small cargo van from a local car rental palce for next Saturday, June 16th, and on that day I will use it to take all of our boxes, 28, to Doma, a Polish shipping company, and send them off to Poland.

Today, after our Polish lesson, we will finish putting shipping labels on the boxes. Tomorrow Joan goes shopping with her daughter and I will take a computer system and give it to our friend Krystyna from Warsaw.

Dzisiaj zrobiłem podróż do miejscowego amerykaskiego Samochodu Motorowego Klubu Stowarzyszenia by zwrócić się o Kierowcy Międzynarodówki Dopuszczają.

Joan jutro robi zakupy z jej córką i wezmę system komputerowy i dam to naszej przyjacielowi Krystynie z Warszawy.

Another discussion!

We talked again today about what we are doing, whether or not we were making the right decision. It seems like it's always in our mind even though we have purchased the tickets to Poland and are packing our belongings to send in two weeks. Still, a small doubt always remains when we look at the situation of Poland today, with rising prices, doctors on strike, a poor medical system, so many Poles who have a hard time living day to day and the list goes on about why we should not do this.

We've looked at houses for sale in southern Illinois, in rural communities. 2 Bedroom houses that we could pay cash for and not have a monthly mortgage to worry about but we would have only our SS checks for income and with the cost of medical coverage, gas prices, food prices, property taxes, prescriptions prices without company insurances, it would be almost impossible to live here. So our plan remains the same, move to Poland in August. Joan thinks the language barrier will be the only thing of major concern and, if she is right, then we have no real problem with this move. We will learn the language much faster once we are in Polalnd.

I am in touch with 3 Americans living in Poland now and 1 who will move there in August. The one who has been there the longest, since 1993, recently wrote a treatise on Modern day Poland that has given me more insight to the current condition in Poland and why it is that way. Much of what he wrote I have read in other articles but he goes into more depth on the subject and that has been helpful.

I think we are near the end of our packing of things to ship. In total we have 24 boxes and I think maybe only 3 or 4 more to pack. I welcome the day we ship everything out.

I applied for my International Drivers License that, along with my Illinois License, will allow me to drive in Poland for one year. After that I will need to take a Polish Drivers License test.

All of these "things" keep popping up about our move and could cause us to change our minds but the possibility of living in Poland, home of my ancestors, to know the family I never knew is a strong reason for wanting to go. Like any family, I am sure differences will occur between us and maybe not everyone will understand us, but I want to know these relatives of mine in Poland.

Myślę, że jesteśmy blisko koca naszego pakowania rzeczy by posłać.

Boxes, Boxes, Boxes

They are everywhere. In the kitchen, in the living room, in the bedroom. We can't escape from them. We have 17 packed so far and more to go. We have only 3 weeks to finish packing and ship everything to Poland.
Today I talked with Jay, an American from New Jersey living in Gdansk, and we talked for half an hour using the Skype computer progam. It was nice.

We spent the afternoon packing more things to ship, decided what we didn't want to take with us from the kitchen area and took the pictures off the walls we want to ship.

I've been talking with another American who moved to Poland in 1993 and the information he has given me has been very helpful.

Tomorrow we are off for Memorial day, I've run out of packing "peanuts" so we will take the day off and just use it to relax.
Oni są wszędzie. W kuchni, w pokoju mieszkalnym, w sypialni. Nie możemy uciekać od nich. Mamy 17 zapakowanego dotychczas i więcej by pójść. Mamy tylko 3 tygodnie by skoczyć pakowanie i posłać wszystko do Polski.
Dzisiaj powiedziałem z Jayem, Amerykaninem z New jersey mieszkającego w Gdasku, i powiedzieliśmy przez pół godzinę używającą Skype komputera progam.

Life is like an onion......

You peel off the layers.......and sometimes you cry.

It was like that this weekend. Joan and I returned to the place we lived in Michigan to say farewell to good friends and neighbors. I didn't realize how hard it would be to say goodbye to them until we were leaving the house of our friends Mike and Mary. Even though they said they will come to Poland to see us, it was difficult leaving them and being so far away.

It was special time in my life now that I look back at it. 15 or so of us lived in the woods, built our own houses, lived without electricity or running water, without a toilet inside the houses, provided our own heat for our houses with firewood we cut for our wood stoves and had one common road that our houses were connected. We had time to visit, time to play and time to grow together.

These people I will never forget.

Życie jest jak onion.........Ty skórka precz layer.......and czasami płaczesz.
To było w ten sposób ten weekend. Joan i ja wróciłem do miejsca zamieszkaliśmy w Michigan by żegnać się do dobrych przyjaciół i sąsiadów.
Mieliśmy czas by bywać, ustalić czas pobawić się i ustalić czas urosnąć razem.
Ci ludzie, których nigdy nie będę zapominać.

Update

So....here we are. Next weekend we return to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan for a Bon Voyage party given for us from our neighbors and friends from when we lived there. It will be good to see them all again. We shared so many good and bad times together that our bond is still strong and I was happy that they would want to do this for us.

We all shared in the same experience of building our own houses, deep in the forest, without the luxury of electricity, running water, air conditioning, central heating and for me this was the best, though most strenuous, time.

Now we embark on a new adventure.................... to Poland. We will have electricity, running water, central heating, no air conditioning and it will be strenuous at times with the language difference, but I know we can conquer this problem. I don't believe the saying that you "can't teach old dogs new tricks". I think it depends on the "dog" and how much he wants to learn and Joan and I want very much to learn.

We have packed more boxes, bought new boxes of a smaller size to put our glass things into and, in general, continue with our plan. We have a few "reasons" why we should not make this move but they have not stopped our plan. The rate of money exchange is one one of them and the condition of the Medical situation in Poland is the other. But life is for living and we want to live it to it's fullest while we can.

To będzie dobre by zobaczyć ich wszystkie znowu.
Teraz zaczynamy nową przygodę.................... do Polski.
Zapakowaliśmy więcej pudełek, kupiliśmy nowe pudełka mniejszego rozmiaru by położyć nasze rzeczy szkła do i, w ogóle, trwać z naszym planem.

OH NOOOOOooooooo!!

Today I realized that we have only 5 weeks to pack everything we're sending. We have 8 boxes packed already but there is so much more to look through. Last Friday, on a day off from work, I was able to buy those little polystyrene packing "peanuts" from the place I bought our boxes. I bought two bags but the bags were so big I couldn't get them into my car and I had to have them delivered. But they come in handy for packing glass and anything else that's breakable. Today we packed our winter clothes, some glasses, 3 containers of wooden boxes I used to make when we had our woodworking business and all of the CD's I've made. Next weekend we're going to concetrate packing the things in the kitchen and only leave the bare necessities.

I had some good news today that the mother of Joan's son Joey's fiancee will buy our car and not take possession of it until we leave. That's a big headache out of the way.

Our small apartment is getting smaller and smaller each week with the accumulation of the packed boxes plus the bags of "peanuts". You can get some idea of the size of the bag and this one is only two-thirds full.
We had our weekly Polish lesson and Tadeusz, our teacher, told Joan her pronunciation was getting better. Good news.
Dzisiaj zapakowaliśmy nasze zimowe ubranie, kilka sklanek, 3 pojemniki drewnianych pudełek, które zwykłem zrobić kiedy mieliśmy nasz biznes obróbki drzewnej i wszystko z CD zrobiłem.

Yesterday Joan and I went to have our vision checked. We're taking advantage of our company insurance while we have it. The only thing we have left to do is get our teeth cleaned under the insurance program. We want to go to Poland with a clean bill of health.

I have only 30 LP's to finish and then all of our music collection will be on CD's.

I've been looking at houses for sale in Poland, for future reference and even though the prrices of housing has increased dramatically since Poland joined the European Union, I still see houses we could afford to buy and that is encouraging.

The continued falling of the exchange rate is not good but we have no control over that and can do nothing about it.

We have 40 work days left and now each one seems to be long but I know the time will pass very quickly until we leave.

Saturday we will go to Chicago to meet cousins from Michigan and have dinner with them. Mary Ann Bergevin is coming to Chicago with her daughter and grandchildren andwe will have dinner with them at their hotel Saturday night.

David

Wczoraj Joan i ja poszedłem kazać naszą wizję kratkowaną. Korzystamy z naszego ubezpieczenia spółki podczas gdy mamy to.

Sobota pojedziemy do Chicago by spotkać kuzynów z Michigan i zjemy obiad z nimi.

WE DID IT!!

We have our one way tickets to Poland!!!

Great News!!

Today I am ecstatic to tell you that both of my health issues have resolved. I won't go into needless details about what they were since they are now a thing of the past.

Tomorrow, Joan and I will purchase our tickets to Poland. The continual drop of the zloty to USD exchange rate is a concern for us but it will not stop our moving.

This last week we have gone through drawers and thrown out a lot of things we don't need any longer. My conversion of LP's to CD's is almost finished, only about 50 to go. We will take about 250 CD's with us to Poland of music we love. Each CD contains 2 albums. Now we have 5 boxes packed and we are counting the days left. Only forty five actual work days, less than 100 total days. We are excited.

David

Jutro, Joan i ja nabędę nasze bilety do Polski.
Weźmiemy około 250 CD z nami do Polski muzyki, którą kochamy. Każde CD zawiera 2 albumy. Teraz mamy 5 pudełek zapakowane i liczymy dni opuszczały. Tylko czterdzieści pięć faktycznych dni roboczych, mniej niż 100 całkowitych dni. Jesteśmy podnieceni.

Boxes

Today we bought 20 shipping boxes for move. They were too big to fit in my little Saturn car but, luckily, they delivered them to our apartment. We may need more but I thought we should start with this amount. Our problem will be where to keep these boxes as we fill them up. We will send them all to Poland the second week of June.

Less than 5

April's only one week away and then four months to go.

I've been in contact with the Polish for Foreigner's department of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, getting schedules of classes and applications. We will be taking a 3 hour class, twice a week, in the afternoons with 10 people in the class. It's a year long (school year) and the cost is affordable. So far we think a class situation would be better for us than private lessons. It will also give a chance to meet more people.

On my job they are looking for a replacement for me that I will train before I leave. I'm hoping to have a least two months to train him or her.

Both of our confirmations came in from Social Security that state how much we will receive each month.

I want to buy our plane tickets soon so we get good seating but will wait until I clear up 2 health issues that have developed.

Cousin Luka gave me a good website in Poland to check on apartments and houses available and it's been interesting to see the places. The prices are continuing to rise, as expected.

I met another American on the internet who is moving to Poland about the same time as we are and we have been exchanging emails about our prospective moves. He's planning on moving to Gdansk in the north of Poland by the Baltic Sea.

Kwietnia tylko jeden tydzie daleko i wtedy cztery miesiące by pójść.
To też da szansę spotkać więcej ludzi.
Spodziewam się mieć najmniej dwa miesiące by wytrenować go albo ją.
Kuzyna Luka dał mi dobrą witrynę sieci w Polsce by sprawdzić na apartamentach i domach dostępny i to interesowało zobaczyć miejsca.

Idea

I've been thinking about the problem I have with our music collection, over 700 LP's and how to get them to Poland without paying a small fortune to ship them. I have recorded about 230 of them so far but there is so much information on the covers that I hate to leave them behind. So I have decided to take the covers and leave the records behind since i have them recorded on CD's.

Today I received information from Adam Mickiewicz University about language classes for Foreigners. We will be taking a 6 hour course and I am waiting on information about when it will start.

Passing time

This time is moving swiftly now. Already March and I'm ready to go but many things are yet to be done on our part. I am still continuing with the recording of music to CD's, I have about 220 done so far so I'm about a third of the way completed. I made another contact of an American moving to Poland soon and we are comparing notes on the preparation. Still haven't decided what to do with the money from our company 401k money, how to take it to Poland. I would like to transfer it there via our bank but you wouldn't believe the charges they have for doing this. 3 or 4 hundred dollars and all they have to do is make an internet connection and send it.

I've also been checking the price of houses in Poland, to buy, though we are not committing to doing that. They have risen about 30% in the last year. Joining the EU may be good for Poland but not good for us. Who knows where we will end up after our first year in Poznań. My new acquaintance, Scott, who is moving to Poland in July talks about Gdansk as the place for him because it is so close to the sea. Joan has always wanted to live near the ocean and a sea can seem just a big when you're looking at it from the beach. Of course, we have relatives in Gdansk, Grudziądz and Swiecie. We have been to Grudziąz and Swiecie but not to Gdansk. I do have contact with another American who lives in Gdansk and he also loves that city.

Now it is difficult to go to work each day and wait until that final day when we leave our jobs.

David

Zrobiłem inny kontakt z amerykaskiego poruszenia do Polski wkrótce i porównujemy notatki o przygotowywaniu.
Też sprawdzałem cenę domów w Polsce, by kupić, chociaż nie popełniamy do robienia tamtego. Oczywiście, mamy krewnych w Gdasku, Grudziądz i Swiecie. Mam kontakt z innym Amerykaninem, który mieszka w Gdasku i on też miłości tamto miasto.
Teraz to jest trudne pójść pracować każdego dnia i czekać aż, że kocowy dzie kiedy porzucimy nasze prace.

Aunt Stell

The passing of Aunt Stell is a hard thing because she was the last connection to the family of my mother. I have spent time with in in the last four years, talking with her about family, and she told me many things I didn't know about aunts and uncles, grandfather and grandmother. She could still speak in Polish and at times I tried to talk with her in Polish but, of course, it was not always that easy for me. But still, it was nice to be in her company but of the connection to my older family. She knew my mother, she was married to Uncle Chester, my favorite uncle. In my youth, I spent many summers at her house and even now I still know the address of her house and the phone number, some 50 years later. Like so many of my older relatives, I will never forget Aunt Stell.

W mojej młodzieży, spędziłem dużo lat przy jej domu i nawet teraz jeszcze znam adres jej domu i numeru telefonu, kilka 50 lat później.

Polish Citizenship

I've had a few cousins ask me if we will become citizens of Poland once we move there. First, it is not possible for the reasons I will list below from the Polish Embassy. We did not intend to apply for citizenship because we would have to give up our U.S. citizenship and, if we did, we would lose our social security income. But even so, this reply from the Polish Embassy was very interesting because it told me our ancestors came to the U.S., not as citizens of Poland, but as Polish nationals and citizens of Russia. The following statement is from the Polish Embassy.....

If the ancestors who came to the United States were born while Poland did not exist, before Poland regained independence in 1918, it means that they came to the United States as Polish nationals, but not Polish citizens. Since the citizenship is a sort of an artificial concept, it is sometimes difficult to understand why people who emigrated from Poland under partitions had not been considered Polish citizens. However, as Poland did not exist as a state at that time, those Poles who traveled to America, traveled there as citizens of Germany, Austria and Russia. Taking the above into consideration such ancestors could not pass Polish citizenship to their children because they were not Polish citizens themselves.According to Polish Citizens Act of 1920 only people who lived on territory of Poland in 1920 and not being citizens of other countries could be recognized as Polish citizens. Under the law of 1962 the President of the Republic of Poland can grant Polish citizenship, but an alien is eligible to apply for the citizenship, only in case he or she has resided in Poland as a lawful permanent resident for the period of at least 5 years. The granting of the citizenship can be a subject to submission of evidence of the loss or renunciation of foreign citizenship.

Sincerely,
Consular DivisionEmbassy of Poland in Washington D.C.

Polskie Obywatelstwo
Szczerze,

Trip to SS office

Today we took off from work and went to the Social Security office to file our papers for retirement. We got the name of 6 banks in Poland who will receive direct deposits from the U.S.
I recognized four of them as ones that are in Poznań so that should not be a problem. We couldn't set that up yet because you need an account number and filled out papers from the bank we choose so for the first few months the checks will come to our bank here. It only took about an hour at the office and we were surprised that they took us right in, without waiting. Plus, the clerk who waited on us was Polish :-) I had to return with our birth certificates and last years W-2 tax forms for them to copy. The lady said it would take about a month for our letters of verification to arrive that would officially tell us how much we will get each month. She gave us her calculations and I'm happy to say it is more than we thought. Part of the reason is that I receive a little more is because of my military service.

We started going through files and throwing out papers we no longer need, looking through clothes closests for unwanted clothing making lists for boxes we will ship so we know what is in each one.
