Carrefour vs. Real

Big Church
Morning Sunrise

We had our weekly meeting with Zbyszek and then went to Pestka, to Piotr I Pawel, to buy some cloth shopping bags because we are tired of using the plastic ones that fall apart so easily after a few uses. We bought 3 bags for 29zl($9). They should last a long time.

We went back, once again, to Carrefour to see if we would like this store better than Real for our weekly shopping but have decided to remain Real customers. It is the same distance in time to get to both and we prefer Real although Carrefour has better bread. However, I have discovered a local bakery in Suchy Las, just north of us, that has a bakery that produces bread the old way, without yeast. We didn't like Carrefour because when you want to buy any produce you have to wait in line for a clerk to put a price tag on it, they do not sell rolada's and they do not sell large containers of milk. In Real, there are 6 self-serving scales to weigh your own produce with a price tag provided by the machine, they usually have rolada's and they have large containers of milk.

We are contemplating taking a weekend trip to Berlin before April and have just started to make a list of places to see. Probably we will leave on a Friday morning and return Sunday night. Joan was there many years ago when the wall was still up and I have never been there. We have an acquaintance who has been there many times so we will consult him first about where to stay and what to see in the short period of our trip.

Today I walked to the church office to see about joining the parish but found the office is only open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 5PM to 6:30PM so I will have to wait until next Tuesday. We've talked about it since we moved here but are just now getting around to doing it. Surprisingly enough, although the office was closed the church was open. It is only a temporary church however. The big one behind it is still being built. It is much larger than the temporary one and with all the building that is going on around here I am sure that someday it will be filled with people. There is also a new school being built that may open this next school year if they keep working on it steadily.

We did not like Carrefour bo gdy chcesz kupić wszelkie plony trzeba czekać w kolejce do urzędnika, aby umieścić na nim znak ceny, nie sprzedają rolada i nie sprzedają duże kontenery z mlekiem.

Prawdopodobnie będziemy urlopach Piątek rano i powrót w niedzielę wieczorem.

  1. Every place I shop I have to get the produce weighed.

And remember I'll be arriving from Berlin. I won't be an expert, but I may have some ideas. We will spend the first afternoon on a tour. We had to send our 1st and 2nd preferences, so I will find out where I'm going when I get there.

  2. Ah, you mentioned that Polish bread is made without yeast. Not possible. But right before leaving I stumbled across something in a French cookbook about making bread the Polish way. It is rather like sourdough. Once upon a time someone started with yeast, but after that one leaves some of the mixture un-used as a starter for the next time. One adds a bit of water and flour to give it new energy sources, and then uses most of it and leaves some for the next time.

If bread is not made from yeast, it would be flatbread like tortillas or pitas.

We call things like apple bread or banana bread, in the States, quick bread, because they use leavening such as baking powder and can be made quick, without waiting for the bread to rise.
