Neighbors & Ukraine

I know I've mentioned my neighbor, Pawel, the computer wizard before. However, Pawel has a wife, Julia. She is just as helpful to me as Pawel but in a different area, cooking. She created a new meal a few weeks ago and sent it to us for dinner. It was so good I just had to have the recipe.

A few days ago, Pawel emailed it to me but some of it was unclear so I went to ask her to clear it up for me. She did and asked when I was going to make it. I told her on Thursday and she agreed to come over to our flat and show me how to make it. That is fantastic! Yes, I have the recipe but having her to show me every step is so much better. I'm looking forward to Thursday.

I don't know who did what to make the House of Representatives Republican leader, Mike Johnson finally ask the House to vote on the bill for aid to Ukraine, but he did and it passed.

It provides nearly $61 billion to help Ukraine and others in the region fight Russia, while the House also passed funding worth $26.4 billion for Israel and $8.1 billion to counter China's actions in the Indo-Pacific. Zelensky said the decision would keep “history on the right track.”

After months of resisting putting a foreign aid bill on the House floor, GOP Speaker Mike Johnson joined with Democrats to advance the measure to Saturday's vote. The partisan move drew the ire of some hardline members in the Republican Party, who are supporting an effort to oust him. Johnson's job is safe for now.

Ukrainian soldiers told CNN that the vote in the U.S. House of Representatives to approve military aid was a much-needed boost.

"We thought our partners had forgotten about us," - said an intelligence officer serving in the Zaporizhia region in a telephone interview. "This news gives us a sense of support and understanding that we have not been forgotten."

An artillery reconnaissance commander who spent two years defending the city of Avdiyivka before it was seized by Russia in February had a similar message.

"When we feel support from outside, it motivates us. At the end of the day, the military knows it cannot win with sticks, bows and arrows," - he told CNN. "For people who want to defeat the enemy, this message is a great morale booster.

Wiem, że wspominałem już wcześniej o moim sąsiedzie, Pawle, czarodzieju komputerowym. Paweł ma  żonę Julię. Jest dla mnie równie pomocna jak Paweł, ale w innej dziedzinie - w gotowaniu. 

Kilka tygodni temu wykreowała nowe danie i podesłała je nam na kolację. Kilka dni temu Paweł wysłał mi przepis e-mailem, ale niektóre informacje były niejasne, więc poprosiłem ją o wyjaśnienie. Zrobiła to i zapytała, kiedy zamierzam je przygotować. 

Powiedziałem jej, że w czwartek, a ona zgodziła się przyjść do naszego mieszkania i pokazać mi, jak to zrobić. To fantastyczne! Tak, mam przepis, ale pokazanie  każdego kroku jest o wiele lepsze. 

Nie wiem, kto i co sprawiło, że lider Republikanów w Izbie Reprezentantów, Mike Johnson, w końcu poprosił Izbę o głosowanie nad ustawą o pomocy dla Ukrainy, ale zrobił to i ustawa przeszła. 

Zapewnia prawie 61 miliardów dolarów na pomoc Ukrainie i innym w regionie w walce z Rosją, podczas gdy Izba uchwaliła również fundusze o wartości 26,4 miliarda dolarów dla Izraela i 8,1 miliarda dolarów na przeciwdziałanie akcjom Chin na Indo-Pacyfiku. 

Zelensky powiedział, że decyzja ta utrzyma "historię na właściwym torze". Po miesiącach oporu przed wprowadzeniem ustawy o pomocy zagranicznej na salę Izby Reprezentantów, przewodniczący GOP Mike Johnson dołączył do Demokratów, aby przyspieszyć procedurę na sobotnie głosowanie.

Ukraińscy żołnierze powiedzieli CNN, że głosowanie w Izbie Reprezentantów USA w sprawie zatwierdzenia pomocy wojskowej było bardzo potrzebnym impulsem. "Myśleliśmy, że nasi partnerzy o nas zapomnieli" - powiedział oficer wywiadu służący w regionie Zaporoża w wywiadzie telefonicznym. "Ta wiadomość daje nam poczucie wsparcia i zrozumienia, że nie zostaliśmy zapomniani." 

Dowódca rozpoznania artyleryjskiego, który spędził dwa lata broniąc miasta Awdijiwka, zanim zostało ono zajęte przez Rosję w lutym, miał podobne przesłanie. 

"Kiedy czujemy wsparcie z zewnątrz, motywuje nas to. Pod koniec dnia wojsko wie, że nie może wygrać kijami, łukami i strzałami" - powiedział CNN. "Dla ludzi, którzy chcą pokonać wroga, ta wiadomość jest świetnym wzmacniaczem morale.
