I don't know what sparked my memory early this morning but I woke up thinking about my 1977 Ford F-150 truck that I had when I lived in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. More specifically, about my neighbor Steve who lived behind me and up the road we shared that led to the houses that I and my 10-year-old son, Eric, built. We also had some help from cousin Michael Babic.
Steve was an intelligent, high-energy type of person who could usually find a way to fix anything. He built his own 2 story house from large stones he gathered. It was the largest house on County Road #510.
One day my truck would no longer go in the reverse direction and that created a problem for me. I took the 5-minute walk up the road to his house and told him my problem. He said to drive the truck up to his house and he would look at the problem. After a few minutes, he said he could fix it but unconventionally. He would put a hole in the floor, put a gear shifter there and 2nd gear and reverse would be on that shifter. 1st and 3rd gears would be shifted on the driving column shifter. I agreed. He went into his house, got his 12 gauge shotgun and blew a hole in the floor of my car. That's how he fixed the problem.
Another time later when the engine of the truck died, he told me the engine in his old Mercedes was the same size as my truck engine and he could swap the engines for me. To get the engines out and into the vehicles, he made a tri-pod out of 3 small trees and with something called a come-a-long, he lifted out both engines and replaced mine. Then he made all the necessary connections in my truck to make the engine from the Mercedes work in my truck. He was an amazing man.
That is what I loved about living in the woods. All of my neighbors within a 5-mile radius had built their own homes, each one possessed unique skills, a joy of living and self-reliance. We provided our own lighting, heating, and water. Lighting was in the form of gas lights using propane.
Some of the 20 people had families, some were just couples and 3 of us were single. We took the time to get together. Whether it was for a pot-luck dinner, playing volleyball in the snow during winter, collectively buying food from the co-op in town or just to visit, you knew your neighbors. Neighbors could be close,1/4 mile away or far, 3 miles away, but you knew them. That is what I miss in my life now. That life ended 34 years ago but I think about it often, not with regret but with the joy of having the experience.
Dok艂adniej m贸wi膮c, o moim s膮siedzie Stevie, kt贸ry mieszka艂 za domem, kt贸ry ja i m贸j 10-letni syn, Eric, wybudowali艣my przy wsp贸lnej drodze prowadz膮cej do naszych dom贸w. Pomaga艂 nam te偶 kuzyn Michael Babica.
Steve by艂 inteligentnym, pe艂nym energii typem cz艂owieka, kt贸ry zazwyczaj potrafi艂 znale藕膰 spos贸b na naprawienie wszystkiego. Z du偶ych kamieni, kt贸re zebra艂, zbudowa艂 sw贸j w艂asny 2-pi臋trowy dom. By艂 to najwi臋kszy dom na County Road #510.
Zrobi艂em 5-minutowy spacer w g贸r臋 drogi do jego domu i opowiedzia艂em mu o swoim problemie. Powiedzia艂, 偶eby podjecha膰 ci臋偶ar贸wk膮 do jego domu i przyjrza艂 si臋 problemowi. Zrobi艂by dziur臋 w pod艂odze, w艂o偶y艂by tam skrzyni臋 bieg贸w i tam by艂by drugi bieg i wsteczny, a 1. i 3. bieg zosta艂by przeniesiony do kolumny zmiany bieg贸w. Zgodzi艂em si臋. Poszed艂 do swojego domu, wzi膮艂 swoj膮 12-stopniow膮 strzelb臋 i wywali艂 dziur臋 w pod艂odze mojego samochodu. W ten spos贸b naprawi艂 problem.
Innym razem, gdy pad艂 silnik ci臋偶ar贸wki, powiedzia艂 mi, 偶e silnik w jego starym Mercedesie by艂 tej samej wielko艣ci co silnik mojej ci臋偶ar贸wki i m贸g艂by dla mnie zamieni膰 te silniki. Nast臋pnie wykona艂 wszystkie niezb臋dne po艂膮czenia w mojej ci臋偶ar贸wce, aby silnik z Mercedesa dzia艂a艂 w mojej ci臋偶ar贸wce. By艂 niesamowitym cz艂owiekiem.
Wszyscy moi s膮siedzi w promieniu 5 mil zbudowali swoje w艂asne domy, ka偶dy z nich posiada艂 wyj膮tkowe umiej臋tno艣ci, rado艣膰 偶ycia i samodzielno艣膰. Zapewniali艣my w艂asne o艣wietlenie, ogrzewanie i wod臋. O艣wietlenie by艂o w postaci lamp gazowych z u偶yciem propanu.
Niekt贸re z 20 os贸b mia艂y rodziny, niekt贸re by艂y tylko parami, a 3 z nas by艂y samotne. Po艣wi臋cali艣my troch臋 czasu, aby si臋 spotka膰. To 偶ycie sko艅czy艂o si臋 34 lata temu, ale my艣l臋 o tym cz臋sto, nie z 偶alem, ale z rado艣ci膮 z tego do艣wiadczenia.
