Rant #16

"Free at last, Free at last, Great God a-mighty, "We are free at last."   I watched on television as Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered that speech, August 28th, 1963, at the Lincoln Memorial, Washington D.C. Then I saw hatred assassinate him on April 4th, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee.

Civil rights activist Medgar Evers was assassinated by Byron De La Beckwith, a member of the White Citizens Council. Fred Hampton, a leader for the Black Panther Party in Chicago, Illinois was killed in his apartment during a police raid while sleeping, unarmed in 1968. Harry and Hariette Moore were a husband and wife team of civil rights activists and teachers who founded the NAACP in Brevard County, Florida. In 1951, the couple’s house was bombed and both of them were murdered. Three members of the Ku Klux Klan were responsible. Malcolm X, one the the most prominent Black leaders of the 20th Century rose from prison inmate to spokesman for the Nation Of Islam. Members of the Nation Of Islam were convicted of his killing.Years later, it was revealed that the FBI used COINTLPRO agents to infiltrate the Nation Of Islam and caused tension between them and Malcolm; and created false letters between Malcolm and the Nation. These are only a few of the more "prominent" Afro-Americans murdered by hatred of one type or another. The list of "ordinary" Afro-Americans murdered in America since slavery began is miles long.

Now a new name is added, George Floyd. A video captured a white police officer pressing his knee into George Floyd’s neck in a banned maneuver as Floyd repeatedly said, “I can’t breathe.” Floyd later died. It happened in Minneapolis, Minnesota and started nights of protesting, rioting and looting. From Minneapolis it spread to other cities across the United States. It is plain to see from the video it was murder but the police officer who did it was only charged with 3rd degree murder, not 1st degree, which it should be.

President Trump called the rioting protesters “THUGS,” while suggesting military intervention and warning in a tweet that there could be additional violence if the chaos continued. “When the looting starts, the shooting starts,” the president wrote. This from a President who should be trying to resolve the riots but instead throws fuel on the fire. He has NO interest in bringing a divided nation together. A bully is a bully as when he called the Mayor of St, Paul, Minnesota weak because the Mayor did not stop the rioting in that city. So, in his mind, it is OK to start shooting civilians who are stealing, not just arresting them. This is what America has become under his presidency.

57 years after Martin Luther King. "Free at last, Free at last, Great God a-mighty, "We are free at last?" What has changed in the hatred?

"Nareszcie wolny, nareszcie wolny, Wielki Boże wszechmogący, "Nareszcie jesteśmy wolni". Oglądałem w telewizji jak Martin Luther King, Jr. wygłaszał to przemówienie, 28 sierpnia 1963, w Lincoln Memorial, Waszyngton D.C. Potem widziałem jak nienawiść zabiła go 4 kwietnia 1968 w Memphis, Tennessee.

Działacz praw obywatelskich Medgar Evers został zamordowany przez Byrona De La Beckwitha, członka Rady Białych Obywateli. Fred Hampton, przywódca Partii Czarne Pantery w Chicago, Illinois, został zabity w 1968 roku w swoim mieszkaniu podczas nalotu policji w czasie snu, nieuzbrojony. Harry i Hariette Moore byli mężem i żoną, teamem działaczy na rzecz praw obywatelskich i nauczycielami, którzy założyli NAACP w Brevard County na Florydzie. W 1951 roku dom pary został zbombardowany i oboje zostali zamordowani.

Teraz dodano nowe nazwisko, George Floyd. Nagranie wideo zarejestrowało białego policjanta wciskającego kolano w szyję George'a Floyda w niedozwolony sposób, jak Floyd wielokrotnie powtarzał: "Nie mogę oddychać".

Nie interesuje go scalanie podzielonego narodu.

  1. Hi David!

Just a point of clarification-- Trump actually supports the rights of the protestors to protest. He referred to the rioters who are looting and causing damage as thugs--not the protestors.

I love your blog, and am glad to see Joan improving!
