No house.

We picked up Zbyszek at 11AM and started our trip to Słupca. Fortunately it was a sunny day so the ride was nice. We met the real estate agent in the parking lot of a gas station and then continued 7km to the village of Drążna. 10 houses make up the village and the house we were to look at was at the end of the road, at the back of a farm. The house, built in 1978, had been renovated in 1998 so it had newer radiators in each room but you could only adjust the heat in 3 rooms. Inside was a bathroom, a kitchen with a door leading to the living room. Another door from there lead to the first bedroom. The second door in the kitchen lead to the second bedroom. None of them were very large but still larger than what we have now. Below the house and outside, a door lead to the basement where the heating stove for the house was. Like many of the houses we have looked at, the stove looked like something from the middle ages. The cost in coal to heat the house for a year was about 3000zl($833). Electric cost was 125zl($35) a month. It had cable TV and internet, a definite must for any house we would buy. The kitchen was about twice the size we have now. We asked what would be left in the house if we bought it and we were told nothing. The cooking stove, refrigerator, sink, kitchen cabinets and lights would all be taken out and what we would get for the price of the house was a shell that had to be filled in. That was not a good thing. The floors seemed even but were covered with a sheet of linoleum that resembled wood. There was an attic but it was completely unfinished with little insulation in the roof. Joan was not thrilled with the house and I had my doubts about the price and the house in general. In the end we decided to pass on the house and maybe even stop looking at houses unless the prices drop another 20%, an unlikely prospect.

Back in Poznań Zbyszek took us to one of his favorite restaurants so Joan could taste their Żurek and give her opinion of it. It was served rather uniquely in a bowl made out of bread. She thought it was too salty, the wrong type of saugage was used in it and it was a little sour. We all agreed that her Żurek was better. She was happy.

Next Zbyszek asked if we would like to see what and old apartment in Poznań looked like and we said yes. His brother lives close to the restaurant so we stopped at the Elite cukernia, bought some pastries and walked to the apartment. It was in an old building with a huge entrance door, entered through a smaller door in it. His brother lives on the first floor so we walked up the wide staircase to his flat. On the landing before the flat, in the corner stood a strange looking closet. We were told that originally that was the toilet for the first floor and no flat had it's own toilet. Now, after renovation, they all do and the old toilet is just a shell.

Inside the flat were two bedrooms, living room, toilet, hall and kitchen. All of the rooms were big with high ceiling and beautiful ceramic stoves in the corners of the rooms. In size it was 91m, almost twice the size of our flat and had so much character. The floors were all wood, real wood, the walls were beautifully painted and plants were everywhere. Outside the building looked terrible but inside the apartment was very nice. That is not unusual, I was told, for old buildings.

Even though the house was not what we wanted the trip was still a success because we spent a nice day with our friend and he showed us another side of Poznań.

Spotkaliśmy agentów kupne nieruchomości w parkingu stacji benzynowej i wtedy kontynuowaliśmy 7km do wsi Drążna. Drugie drzwi w kuchni prowadzą do drugiej sypialni.

Wewnątrz mieszkania były dwie sypialnie, pokój mieszkalny, toaleta, sala i kuchnia. Wszystkie z pokoi były duże z wysoko sufitem i pięknymi ceramicznymi piecami w kątach pokoi. W rozmiarze to był 91m, prawie dwa razy wielkość naszego mieszkania i miał tyle charakteru. Podłogi były cały drewno, rzeczywiste drzewo, ściany były pięknie malowany i rośliny były wszędzie.

David. It is most difficult to secure a good house in Poland, my experience is this,

Never buy in a one horse town, why: no privacy, target for robbery and murder, power and gas always disrupted.

Treat with suspiscion any offers from a friend of a friend especially if your from the West, price 30% more expensive.

If you speak poor Polish have somebody act on your behalf, if you must have contact with the owner, dress very poor and be unshaven.

Remember a house is sold without all furnishings ie blinds cupboards, store, Poles go to such trouble to remove "valuable" rubbish.

Most important, never ever think you have secured a sale unless you have been given the keys,(Poles change there minds etc(

    Good luck

    Dear Joan and David,

I am sorry about house in Slupca. I know with help of your fried you will find new apartment. As to ceramic stoves in the corners. Those stoves are build from special bricks with heating unit inside, than bricks are cover with special bricks called kafle with high gloss ceramic glaze. If you look up piec kaflowy on Google you will find information about them. Some of them were quite elaborate and highly decorated. You put the coals into burnning unit and the bricks got very hot and heated the rooms for 24 hours, you did not have to add more fuel to keep them warm only once a day. The big doors in the old buildings were made for coaches drawn by horses, that were house in the stables at the back of property and small doors were used by people living in the building.
Good luck with your shots and hope your back will get better. The reason in Poland you get more medicine in form of the shots is that shots do not cause as much damage to your liver and stomach as pills and take effect faster.

Good luck with everything and best wishes,
