Nice autumn day, perfect for walking and we did just that. First to the American Consulate where we met with Urszula Dziuba, the consular agent, to give her our presidential voting ballots to be put in the diplomatic pouch for Warsaw. She asked how we have been, what we have been doing, where we have visited, etc. She just returned from a vacation to Kraków and the Tatra mountains and told us we have to visit Kraków. Like many others, it is her favorite city in Poland. We assured her that we would go there in the future.

From the consulate we walked to Stary Browar where Joan wanted to buy something in the health food store. As she was paying for the product she wanted we heard "Cześć" behind us and turned around to see a student of our Mickiewicz Polish class. It was Ala, a young woman from Ukraine with her two and a half month old baby, Antek. We talked for about 20 minutes with her and then walked to the Rynek for coffee.

We sat down in the outside cafe of Cafe Molina and waited for a waitress. 5-10 minutes passed and no waitress. Joan was getting a little concerned about waiting so long and then the waitress appeared at our table with our order of two caffe lattes, without us even ordering them. She knows us so well now that she knows what we want when she sees us. We sat, talked about our plans for the weekend and the new Avon advertising sign that covers one whole building. Yes, even in Poznań, there is Avon calling. We wanted to walk to Wilson Park but got sidetracked at a church I have wanted to take pictures of the inside. I really like the vaulted sealings of the entrance way.

If the weather is good on Sunday, we plan to travel to Goluchow to visit the castle. The Goluchow Castle, originally a defence structure, was built for Rafal Leszczynski around 1650, to be turned into a stately magnate residence by Rafal's son, Waclaw, one of the Republic of Poland - Lithuania's most prominent citizens. Two and a half centuries later Izabela of the Czartoryskis Dzialynska, who then owned the Castle, had it restored in the style of the French Renaissance, as was then the fashion. The restoration, modelled on the chateaux on the Loire and, partly, on Italian palaces, was the work of the French architect Maurice August Ouradou, assisted by Zygmunt Gorgolewski, a Pole. French artists were employed to decorate the Castle walls and interiors, and many of the sculptures which adorn the courtyard to this day were brought from France and Italy. While nineteenth-century in appearance, the Castle has retained a number of earlier architectural traits and details, most notably the in its main part and in the gallery. And even though it was Izabela Dzialynska who gave the final shape to the building, it remains called the Leszczynskis Castle.

5-10 kelnerki przeszłe i żadna kelnerka.

Jeżeli pogoda jest dobra w niedzielę, planujemy podróżować do Goluchow by odwiedzić zamek.

    David,

Yes, go to Goluchow Castle by all means, you will not be sorry. It is quite magnificent. They also have a small animal area with some of the Polish bison and a few other animals. Nice grounds too.

I still read your blog on a regular basis. I miss somethings in Poland but not all.

    Take care,

    John

  2. Give a thought to heading to Krakow and the Zakopane when I'm in Zakopane next year. Those dates begin the last Saturday in June and continue for two weeks. We start camp the first Saturday that school is done in Poland. I expect again to be traveling from Siedlce to Zakopane with the students.
