A gray, rainy, chilly day today that saw a friend of ours young son (8) go away to his first Boy Scout camp. It was pouring down rain as he got on the bus and it reminded me of my scouting days, sleeping in a tent while the rain came down while we tried to keep warm and dry. Ah...........those were the day :-) I have a lot of good memories of scouting days and I hope this will turn out to be one of his.
My best memory took place in the dead of winter, with lots of snow and something called the Klondike Derby. It was a contest among many scout troops where you had to build a sled like they used in Alaska but instead of it being pulled by dogs it was pulled by scouts. It was a 4 day training session in which we learned how to cook outside on an open fire, give firstaid to many self-created ailments like a broken leg and how to make the patient ready to be transported. The most difficult thing to do was the "valley cross". It was a training on how to use ropes strung across a valley and then the sled was attached to them so you could transport the sled and the troop to the other side. Of course, there was no real danger because it was well supervised but at age 10 it seemed very dangerous to me and I was thrilled when we all made it to the other side. That event gave me a great love for the outdoors, even in the cold winter, and it is something that has stayed with me all my life. That's why, even now, I hate to stay inside when it is nice enough to go out.
Szary, deszczowy, ch艂odny dzie艅 dzisiaj, 偶e widzia艂 naszego przyjaciela syna (8) odej艣膰 do jego pierwszy ob贸z harcerski. By艂o leje deszcz jak dosta艂 si臋 na autobus i przypomnia艂a mi o mojej rozpoznania dni, spa艂 w namiocie, podczas gdy Spad艂 deszcz, a my starali艣my si臋 trzyma膰 ciep艂o i sucho. Ah ........... by艂y to dzie艅 :-) Mam wiele dobrych wspomnie艅 dni rozpoznania i mam nadziej臋, 偶e oka偶e si臋 jednym z jego.
Moi najlepsi pami臋ci mia艂y miejsce w 艣rodku zimy, z du偶膮 ilo艣ci膮 艣niegu i co艣, co nazywa Klondike Derby. To by艂 konkurs w艣r贸d wielu 偶o艂nierzy scout, gdzie trzeba by艂o budowa膰 sanki jak kiedy艣 na Alasce, ale zamiast niej wci膮gni臋ta przez psy by艂 ci膮gni臋ty przez harcerzy. To by艂a sesja szkole艅 4 dzie艅, w kt贸rym dowiedzieli艣my si臋 jak gotowa膰 na zewn膮trz kominek, da膰 FirstAid do siebie stworzy艂 wiele dolegliwo艣ci, takich jak z艂amania nogi i jak zrobi膰 pacjentowi przygotowane do transportu. Najtrudniej by艂o zrobi膰 "cross dolinie". To by艂o szkolenie na temat wykorzystania lin nawleczone dolin臋 i sanki zosta艂 przydzielony do nich wi臋c mo偶na transportu sanki i oddzia艂 na drug膮 stron臋. Oczywi艣cie, nie by艂o realnego zagro偶enia, poniewa偶 by艂 dobrze nadzorowane, ale w wieku 10 lat wydawa艂o si臋 bardzo niebezpieczne dla mnie i by艂 wstrz膮艣ni臋ty, kiedy wszyscy si臋 go na drug膮 stron臋. To wydarzenie da艂o mi wielk膮 mi艂o艣ci膮 na zewn膮trz, nawet w zimie zimno, i to jest co艣, co pozostanie we mnie ca艂e moje 偶ycie. Dlatego, nawet teraz, nienawidz臋 zatrzyma膰 wewn膮trz, gdy jest na tyle mi艂y, aby wyj艣膰.
