Another exceptional day of weather in Split and so we decided to take the 8:30AM ferry to the island of Hvar, a two hour cruise across the Adriatic Sea from Split. It was a relaxing cruise and we arrived at 10:30, just missing the bus to Stari Grad, the nearest town. We took the free bus ride to Hvar town, about 20 minutes away and decided to rent a car to see the island, 77km in length.  We were hungry so we stopped in the small village of Milna to have lunch.  It was an excellent choice.

The island is very hilly and we had to descend into the village but found an excellent little restaurant in a cove.  Lunch was fantastic and the service exceptional.  We continued on our drive to the end of the island climbing many hills to the crest where we had great views of the sea.  Unfortunately, we didn't know that half of the road was under construction and a very slow drive so after an hour we turned around and head back to Hvar town.  On the way we stopped in Vrboska, a village known as "little venice" because of the many little bridges over the canal that ran through the village.

Vrboska is cute, quaint but not that interesting and after trying to see the large church (closed) and a little chapel whose picture I took with Joan in front, we walked back to our car, stopping along the way to have ice cream.  We decided we would spend the rest of time back in Hvar town and see what we could of it before we had to catch the 5:30PM ferry back to Split.

It was more interesting with it's white stone houses and streets, the church and a fortress on top of the hill that we didn't have time to see.  We did pass a hat shop and I encouraged Joan to buy a straw hat to keep the sun off of her face.

At 7:30PM we arrived back in Split, went to the restaurant we had made a reservation for the day before and had an excellent dinner.  We stopped in Dioclesion's palace to walk dancers who were doing the tango.  When it was over we walked the promenade, viewed more of the folk dancers and returned home to get a good night's sleep before we leave in the morning for Dubrownik.
