Panaroma

Ostrow Tumski
National museum

We accomplished our goal today of seeing the Panorama. I can describe it to you but without actually seeing it you will never get what I mean. It is truly an incredible painting that comes alive as you stand face to face with it. It begins as you ascend a long walkway going up and up and when you reach the top and come out into the opening the painting surrounds you, 360 degrees. It not just the painting that is so impressive but the way as the painting ends at the bottom the scene is continued with actual bushes or caverns or track in the earth that surrounds the space between you and the painting. In the painting you see a canon with tracks in front of it and those tracks continue on real earth right up to where you are standing. The only negative about this painting is that you only have 30 minutes to view it before the next group of people are due to come in and you must leave. The whole story of the battle is on machines, in 6 different languages, so you hear what each part of the painting plays in the battle from beginning to end. Having just finished the book about Kosciuszko, it was interesting to see this picture.

We started our day back at the restaurant on the Odra for breakfast, then walked to the little down Grodzka street to the little island, Wyspa Piasek, then across the bridge to see Ostow Tumski. Impressive cathedrals are everywhere and and interesting point in crossing over the bridge was the collection of locks on the bridge. I have no idea why they are they but it was a curious thing.

After the Panorama we went to the National Museum to view what was there and found and interesting collection of old drawers and some beautiful furniture pieces.

The weather was perfect, cool, good for walking and we did walk a lot today. It's the first time I can remember my feet hurting from walking so much.

I can't imagine anyone going to Wrocław and not going to see the Panaroma. It's fantastic.

  1. I'm loving your travel stories! we saw the panorama in July with Road Scholars, a group of Americans over 55. It was wonderful. Sto lat!

  2. Well I couldn't decide if my plan for free time next summer should be Wroclaw or Gdansk. I think these photos have helped me to make up my mind. Pecs is described by Rick Steves as being an "architectural can-can." I think Wroclaw deserves that description too.

  3. We've been to both cities now and I would choose Wrocław over Gdańsk. Not only is it closer for you but it does have a bigger variety of architecture, not to mention the Panaroma. The Royal Hostel, where we stayed, is only 5 minutes from the square and was only 135 a night for two people. It's not 5 star but clean and good wait staff.

  4. Off kilter,
You've seen it then you know exactly what I'm talking about. We will definitely come back again to see it, maybe in the dead of winter when there are less people in the way of viewing. But quite a feeling, isn't it.
    Thanks for writing.

  5. I saw a similar panorama in Atlanta. It depicted the Civil War. We sat in a chair and the panorama revolved. It also had stuff in front to make it see 3-dimential. It was actually painted by a Polish man in Milwaukee.
