This last Friday was a day of surprises. It was the day to drive to Inowroclaw for the funeral of a cousin, or so I thought. I received a message she had died the previous Friday and then another one telling me the mass and funeral would start at 11:00. Joan was not able to accompany me on this trip and I was a little hesitant to let her be at home alone for the length of time I would be gone. However, I wanted to pay my last respect to my cousin and her family. It also afforded me the chance to meet cousins from England, France, Spain and the Netherlands who were coming for the funeral.
Halfway there I stopped to call Joan and make sure she was well. I arrived at the church, parked my car and a man was walking out as I approached. I thought I was late for the mass. When I opened the door to the church, to my surprise there was no one there. It was completely empty. I checked the name on the church, the street name and the address and all were correct. A little shocked, I called one of the daughter's of the cousin who died but got no answer so I left a message. Sitting in my car for a few minutes, my phone rang. It was the daughter and she said the funeral was yesterday, on Thursday. She told me to wait and she would come and get me.
Driving to her flat, I told her I was sure the funeral was on Friday and couldn't believe how I made such a mistake. At her flat were two young cousins, one from England and the other from the Netherlands. We looked at the message that was sent to me and saw the mistake. I was told of the death on Friday and then the time for the mass and funeral but not the day they would take place, Friday had stuck in my mind because I had no other information. We all felt bad about the mistake but the good news was that the cousins from the other countries were still here and they would be at the flat in about an hour.
So, on the bright side, even though I missed the funeral I was still able to meet cousins, some of who I've chatted with on FB but never met. Joan would have enjoyed this meeting also because almost all of them could speak English. I love meeting with cousins, especially ones I haven't met yet. I spent 5 hours talking with them but finally had to leave. I came back home at 19:00 and was happy to see Joan again. I think it was good for her to be alone for such a long time but she was on my mind the whole day.
Ten ostatni pi膮tek by艂 dniem niespodzianek. To by艂 dzie艅, aby pojecha膰 do Inowroc艂awia na pogrzeb kuzyna, a przynajmniej tak mi si臋 wydawa艂o. Dosta艂em wiadomo艣膰, 偶e umar艂a w poprzedni pi膮tek, a potem kolejn膮, kt贸ra powiedzia艂a mi, 偶e msza i pogrzeb zaczn膮 si臋 o 11:00. Joan nie by艂a w stanie towarzyszy膰 mi w tej podr贸偶y i troch臋 waha艂em si臋, czy pozwoli膰 jej by膰 w domu sama przez d艂ugi czas, kiedy mnie nie b臋dzie. Chcia艂em jednak z艂o偶y膰 ostatni szacunek kuzynce i jej rodzinie. Da艂o mi to r贸wnie偶 okazj臋 pozna膰 kuzyn贸w z Anglii, Francji, Hiszpanii i Holandii, kt贸rzy przyje偶d偶ali na pogrzeb.
W po艂owie drogi zatrzyma艂em si臋, 偶eby zadzwoni膰 do Joan i upewni膰 si臋, 偶e czuje si臋 dobrze. Doszed艂em do ko艣cio艂a, zaparkowa艂em samoch贸d, a jaki艣 m臋偶czyzna wyszed艂, gdy si臋 zbli偶y艂em. My艣la艂em, 偶e sp贸藕ni艂em si臋 na msz臋. Kiedy otworzy艂em drzwi do ko艣cio艂a, ku mojemu zaskoczeniu nikogo tam nie by艂o. To by艂o zupe艂nie puste. Sprawdzi艂em nazwisko w ko艣ciele, nazw臋 ulicy i adres i wszystkie by艂y poprawne. Troch臋 zszokowany zadzwoni艂em do jednej z c贸rek kuzyna, kt贸ra zmar艂a, ale nie otrzyma艂em odpowiedzi, wi臋c zostawi艂em wiadomo艣膰. Siedz膮c w samochodzie przez kilka minut, zadzwoni艂 m贸j telefon. To by艂a c贸rka i powiedzia艂a, 偶e pogrzeb odby艂 si臋 wczoraj, w czwartek. Powiedzia艂a mi, 偶ebym poczeka艂, a ona przyjedzie po mnie.
Jad膮c do jej mieszkania, powiedzia艂em jej, 偶e jestem pewien, 偶e pogrzeb odby艂 si臋 w pi膮tek i nie mog艂em uwierzy膰, jak pope艂ni艂em taki b艂膮d. W jej mieszkaniu by艂o dw贸ch m艂odych kuzyn贸w, jeden z Anglii, a drugi z Holandii. Przyjrzeli艣my si臋 przes艂anej do mnie wiadomo艣ci i zauwa偶yli艣my b艂膮d. Wszyscy czuli艣my si臋 藕le z powodu b艂臋du, ale dobra wiadomo艣膰 by艂a taka, 偶e kuzyni z innych kraj贸w wci膮偶 tu byli i b臋d膮 za oko艂o godziny w mieszkaniu.
Uwielbiam spotyka膰 si臋 z kuzynami, zw艂aszcza tymi, kt贸rych jeszcze nie spotka艂em. Sp臋dzi艂em z nimi 5 godzin, ale w ko艅cu musia艂em odej艣膰. Wr贸ci艂em do domu o 19:00 i cieszy艂em si臋, 偶e zn贸w widz臋 Joan. My艣l臋, 偶e dobrze by艂o, 偶e by艂a sama przez tak d艂ugi czas, ale my艣la艂a ca艂y dzie艅.
