Test

For the last two days we've been studying hard for our end of semester test. We went over everything in the last 5 chapters and I felt pretty confident we were ready. You know how it is when you're ready for something. You feel good, prepared, full of confidence and looking forward to the event. We got to class early, did a quick review and waited to the teacher and test. We got the test and I looked at the first set of questions and my confidence flowed out of me like a river breaking through a dam. It was seven sentences that you had to use the word for "to know"

Now, my Enlish speaking readers will say "what's the problem?", but my Polish readers will know that there are three different words that all mean "to know". There is umieć, which mean to know how to something, znać, which means to know facts and wiedzieć, which means to know someone or something. The problem is I still am not sure which is used when and so the first set of questions just demolished my confidence. I stumbled through that set and went on to the next. Eventually I finished the test but am not looking forward to the review of it on Friday. I got a score of 86 on my first test but am sure this one will be much lower. It's just hard to take when we study so hard to learn the language. Oh well, it's not the end of the world.

David: What is the purpose of doing formal Polish studies, are you doing a course with intention of finding full time work or is it to remain in Poland.. Good Luck

  4. David,
I feel for you both with that test!
You did not say how Joan managed it? I suspect you have done better than you fear, and if not you still know (dreadful word!) that you have given it your best shot. It is so much harder learning things is as we get older - some very brave friends have tried learning music along with their children...
I'm pleased to read how much you are enjoying the challenges of such a changed lifestyle, and long may that continue :-)
