We had a visit today from Małgorzata Snitała, daughter of Zybyszek and Ninka. She is a lovely, intelligent young woman living with her parents for the next year. Because of our connection to her parents she wanted to meet us and so came to visit. She has a liking for Bulgaria where she has spent some time on scholarship to study Bulgarian filology. Philology is not a degree in the U.S. but exists in Europe. Philology, derived from the Greek - logos, which is a word with no single equivalent in English, but which has been translated to mean such things as "argument", "articulation", "logic", "reason", and "word") is as "an affinity toward the learning of the backgrounds as well as the current usages of spoken or written methods of human communication". In a sense, to understand a language, philology seeks to understand the origins of that language, and so it is often defined as "the study of ancient texts and languages", although this is a rather narrow view and is not entirely accurate.
In the academic traditions of several nations, a wide sense of the term "philology" describes the study of a language together with its literature and the historical and cultural contexts that are indispensable for an understanding of the literary works and other culturally significant texts. Philology thus comprises the study of the grammar, rhetoric, history interpretation of authors, and crirical traditions associated with a given language.

She has been back for 6 months, will stay for a year and then hopes to return to Bulgaria. She said Bulgaria is a beautiful country but the people are still very poor.

We told her about our struggle to learn Polish and said she will come once a week while she can and just talk with us only in Polish. I think that will be helpful for Joan and I.
