History

 Today, again, I was thinking about my life in the U.P of Michigan. After I sold the house I built in the forest, I moved back to live with Joan. After her children had permanently left the nest, I proposed we move back to the U.P.  We made several trips there to look for property, but .this time with a house already there. We found what we wanted. It was 80 acres sitting at the end of a very remote tiny road through the forest but opened up to a beautiful view of a small valley, stream, and forest on the other side. The nearest neighbor lived a mile away on a farm. I already knew my next job would be as a woodworker. Before we moved, I had already purchased the equipment I knew I would need. We had only the house and I didn't want that to be the place for the machines. So, I went into the nearest city, Marquette, and in a shop, I found plans to build a 2-car garage. My idea was to build it and replace the garage door with a wall with 2 small windows in it. My friend, Randy, had already given me alarge 3 section bay window he had replaced and that would go on the side of this new building facing the house.

Once I had the plan and adapted it to what I wanted, I changed the thickness of the walls and ceiling from 6 inches to 12 to allow for extra insulation. I had the foundation of concrete poured by a professional and began building the walls and roof. Once that was done, We put the shingles on the roof to protect what was already built. Joan was a tremendous help, climbing on the roof and nailing them down  

The next step was to install the windows and electrical boxes, build a small room attached to the back of the new "wood shop" where the generator would it and connecting it to the shop electric lines.  That all took about a week

Inside covered the walls with gypsum board and panited all the walls white. My final thing was how to heat the shop while I worked there. I went to the local gas company for suggestions and I was advised of a new method, infrared heating. It was ingenious. The basic idea was the heater would heat the OBJECTS in the room and they would radiate the heat./ The heating element was only 2 foot long and 1 foot wide. It took up very little space but it had to be mounted high on a wall with a vent to the outside. I bought it and installed it. It heated the place to a comfortable 75 degrees all winter long and gave off a red glow when it would come on at night to keep the temperature even. I loved. It was run off LP gas.

When the shop was finished being built, I installed a spcial table that I built to hold a router, joiner, table saw, 2 planers, a band saw, mitre saw and built a 10 foo long table work bench in front of the large window facing the house. That way I could see Joan whenever she was outside. To beathe less of the sawdust, I used 3inch diameter metal pipe to connect every machine to a large, commercial vacuumn cleaner that turned on when a machine came on.

I really loved that shop and what Joan and I had accomplished together. To beautify the outside, Joan planted a lot of wild flowers that were beautiful when in bloom.

Thus began the "Superior Woodworks" business where Joan and I created beautiful jewelry boxes of all different sizes and woods and sold them at different art shows and fairs throughout the midwest from May until October. From October until May I replenished our stock at home and only travelled the Chicago for Christmas where there was a huge art show at McCormack place which we participated in. It was also an opportunity to visit Joan's kids.

Mój pomysł polegał na tym, aby go zbudować i zastąpić drzwi garażowe ścianą z dwoma małymi oknami. Mój przyjaciel, Randy, już dał mi alarge 3 sekcji wykusz, który wymienił i że będzie iść na stronie tego nowego budynku naprzeciwko domu.

Kiedy już miałem plan i dostosowałem go do tego, co chciałem, zmieniłem grubość ścian i sufitu z 6 cali na 12, aby umożliwić dodatkową izolację. Miałem fundament betonu wylanego przez profesjonalistę i zaczął budować ściany i dach. Kiedy to zostało zrobione, położyliśmy gonty na dachu, aby chronić to, co zostało już zbudowane. Joan była ogromną pomocą, wspinając się na dach i przybijając je.  

Następnym krokiem było zainstalowanie okien i skrzynek elektrycznych, zbudowanie małego pomieszczenia z tyłu nowego "sklepu z drewnem", w którym znajdowałby się generator i podłączenie go do linii elektrycznych sklepu.  To wszystko zajęło około tygodnia.

Wewnątrz pokryte ściany z płyty gipsowo-kartonowej i panited wszystkie ściany biały. Moją ostatnią rzeczą było to, jak ogrzewać sklep, kiedy tam pracowałem. Poszedłem do lokalnej firmy gazowej na sugestie i doradzono mi nową metodę, ogrzewanie na podczerwień. To było genialne. Podstawowym założeniem było to, że grzejnik ogrzewałby przedmioty w pomieszczeniu, a one promieniowałyby ciepłem. Element grzewczy miał tylko 2 stopy długości i 1 stopę szerokości. Zajmował bardzo mało miejsca, ale musiał być zamontowany wysoko na ścianie z odpowietrznikiem na zewnątrz. Kupiłem go i zainstalowałem. Ogrzewał miejsce do komfortowych 75 stopni przez całą zimę i dał off czerwoną poświatę, kiedy przyjdzie na noc, aby utrzymać temperaturę nawet. I loved. To było uruchomione z LP gazu.

Hoy, de nuevo, estaba pensando en mi vida en el U.P de Michigan. Después de vender la casa que construí en el bosque, me trasladé a vivir con Joan. Encontramos lo que queríamos. Eran 80 acres situados al final de una pequeña carretera muy remota que atravesaba el bosque, pero que se abría a una hermosa vista de un pequeño valle, un arroyo y un bosque al otro lado. El vecino más cercano vivía a una milla de distancia en una granja. Ya sabía que mi próximo trabajo sería como carpintero. Antes de mudarnos, ya había comprado el equipo que sabía que necesitaría. Sólo teníamos la casa y no quería que ese fuera el lugar para las máquinas. Así que fui a la ciudad más cercana, Marquette, y en una tienda encontré los planos para construir un garaje para dos coches. Mi idea era construirlo y sustituir la puerta del garaje por una pared con dos pequeñas ventanas. Mi amigo, Randy, ya me había dado un gran ventanal de 3 secciones que había reemplazado y que iría en el lado de este nuevo edificio que da a la casa.

Una vez que tuve el plan y lo adapté a lo que quería, cambié el grosor de las paredes y el techo de 6 pulgadas a 12 para permitir el aislamiento adicional. Hice verter los cimientos de hormigón por un profesional y comencé a construir las paredes y el techo. Una vez hecho esto, pusimos las tejas en el techo para proteger lo que ya estaba construido. Joan fue una gran ayuda, subiéndose al tejado y clavándolas.  

El siguiente paso fue instalar las ventanas y las cajas eléctricas, construir un pequeño cuarto adosado a la parte trasera del nuevo "taller de madera" donde estaría el generador y conectarlo a las líneas eléctricas del taller.  Todo esto llevó una semana.

En el interior se cubrieron las paredes con placas de yeso y se pintaron todas las paredes de blanco. Lo ultimo fue como calentar el taller mientras trabajaba ahi. Fui a la compañía de gas local para pedir sugerencias y me aconsejaron un nuevo método, la calefacción por infrarrojos. Era ingenioso. La idea básica era que el calentador calentaría los OBJETOS de la habitación y éstos irían irradiando el calor./ El elemento calefactor tenía sólo 60 cm de largo y 30 cm de ancho. Ocupaba muy poco espacio, pero tenía que estar montado en lo alto de una pared con una ventilación hacia el exterior. Lo compré y lo instalé. Calentaba la casa a unos cómodos 75 grados durante todo el invierno y emitía un resplandor rojo cuando se encendía por la noche para mantener la temperatura uniforme. Me encantaba. Funcionaba con gas LP.

Cuando se terminó de construir el taller, instalé una mesa especial que construí para albergar una fresadora, una carpintería, una sierra de mesa, dos cepillos, una sierra de cinta, una sierra de inglete y construí un banco de trabajo de 10 pies de largo frente a la gran ventana que daba a la casa. Así podía ver a Joan siempre que estuviera fuera. Para reducir el serrín, utilicé un tubo metálico de 3 pulgadas de diámetro para conectar todas las máquinas a un gran aspirador comercial que se encendía cuando se encendía una máquina.

Me encantaba ese taller y lo que Joan y yo habíamos conseguido juntos. Para embellecer el exterior, Joan plantó un montón de flores silvestres que eran hermosas cuando florecían.

Así comenzó el negocio "Superior Woodworks" donde Joan y yo creamos hermosas cajas de joyería de todos los tamaños y maderas diferentes y las vendimos en diferentes exposiciones de arte y ferias en todo el medio oeste desde mayo hasta octubre. Desde octubre hasta mayo reponía nuestro stock en casa y sólo viajaba a Chicago para Navidad donde había una gran exposición de arte en McCormack place en la que participábamos. También fue una oportunidad para visitar a los hijos de Joan.7
