Today we used the GPS and went south to the town of Eisenstadt to visit the Esterhazy Palace.

Esterházy Palace in Eisenstadt is one of the most beautiful baroque palaces in Austria and presents a fascinating view of the resplendent life once lived at the court of the Princes Esterházy. But the palace is still the hub of the cultural scene today and regularly provides the picturesque backdrop for festivities and social events.

Built in the thirteenth century, it has been continually rebuilt and extended ever since.

The origins of Esterházy Palace go back to a castle of the thirteenth century, which since then was continually remodelled and extended. In 1649, the castle came into the hands of the Esterházy family and in the second half of the seventeenth century was remodelled under Paul I into a baroque palace. It was to be the main residence of the family for more than 300 years. During the eighteenth century, reconstructions concentrated on the castle interior; in this phase, little was altered on the outer façade. Under Nicholas II, the palace was restructured in the early nineteenth century into a neoclassical building after plans by the architect Charles Moreau; however, these ambitious building plans had to be shelved owing to financial considerations. Some renovations were carried out in the late nineteenth century, which did little to alter the appearance of the palace. After the Second World War, the Burgenland Government took a lease on extensive parts of the palace. With the takeover on 1 January 2010, Eisenstadt Palace has once more become the central venue for culture and events of the Esterházy Private Foundation, offering guests from all over the world a wide-ranging programme of events and cultural exchange.

 

We  spent most of our day there, walking through the rooms and using audioguides to discover many things we didn't know about the family and the rooms.  The porcelain and silver collections were amazing but the most beautiful room was the concert hall of Joseph Haydn who was the court musician and composer at Esterhazy for forty years. The original pictoral scheme devised by Prince Paul I for the great hall in the 17th century included the first human beings, Adam and Eve, as the marble fountains on the narrow walls; depictions of the Esterhazy family estates around the base; portraits of ancestors in the lower window bays; Hungarian Kings commanding the walls; and portraits of Roman emperors emblazoned above the doors.

 

The Haydnsaal is the showpiece jewel of Esterházy Palace. Its size and interior design and appointments are a manifestation of the political, economic and cultural significance of the Esterházy princes. Today it is hailed as one of the most beautiful and outstanding concert halls in the world, above all because of its acoustics. Its name goes back to the renowned composer Joseph Haydn, who was in the Esterházy family’s service for almost forty years and composed many of his works in Eisenstadt.

After we were done in the palace we went to the gardens to view the Gloriete, It's behind the palace and was a place for weddings and private parties.  Of course, you can always find more about the places we visit on the internet. Esterhazy was certianly worth the hour drive south to see it.

 

In the evening, Joan and I went to a local restuarant to sample more of the local cuisine since we weren't that impressed with the schnitzel yesterday.

Pałac Esterházy w Eisenstadt jest jednym z najpiękniejszych barokowych zabytków Austrii i przedstawia fascynujący widok na olśniewający życia mieszkał kiedyś na dworze Esterházy Princes. Ale pałac jest nadal ośrodkiem świata kultury dziś i regularnie udostępnia malownicze tło dla uroczystości i imprez towarzyskich.
Zbudowany w XIII w., został przebudowany i rozbudowany nieustannie od wieków.Początki pałacu Esterházy wrócić do zamku z XIII wieku, która od tego czasu nieustannie przebudowany i powiększony.   Haydnsaal jest klejnotem wizytówką Esterházy Palace. Jego wielkość i wystrój wnętrz i terminy są przejawem politycznego, gospodarczego i kulturalnego istotności Esterhazy książąt. Dziś jest uznany za jeden z najpiękniejszych i najbardziej wybitne salach koncertowych na świecie, przede wszystkim ze względu na akustykę. Jego nazwa wywodzi się z renomowanego kompozytora Josepha Haydna, który był w rodzinie Esterhazy w służbie przez prawie czterdzieści lat i składa się wiele z jego dzieł w Eisenstadt.
 Po byliśmy sporządzono w pałacu poszliśmy do ogrodów, aby zobaczyć Gloriete, to nic za pałacem i była miejscem na wesela i inne uroczystości. Oczywiście, zawsze można znaleźć więcej informacji na temat miejsc, które odwiedzają w Internecie. Esterhazy był najprawdopodobniej zatrzymamy warte godziny jazdy na południe to zobaczyć.

  W godzinach wieczornych, Joan i ja poszedłem do lokalnego restuarant do próbki więcej z lokalnej kuchni, ponieważ nie byliśmy tak zadowoleni z sznycel wczoraj.
