Yesterday

Monday was a frustrating day for me. I tried getting calling the neurologist but got no answer. I sent an SMS and email but no answer. I wanted to change the epilepsy medication to another kind without the side effect of trouble walking. Finally, at 20:00(8PM), he called back. I told him about the trouble Joan was having and the medication she was taking. He said for her to stop taking the medication she has been taking and gave her another without the side effect.

Today a friend of ours from Michigan sent the pictures I posted of a little hike she took in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Those pictures remind me of how beautiful it is up there in the autumn. It's not that I need pictures, I carry them in my mind always.

When I was living in the teepee and building my house up there, Joan used to come at this time of year and stay for two weeks. The weather was usually perfect and afforded us the opportunity for many hikes in the woods. She loved it in the U.P. Who wouldn't? 

Behind my house, about 1-2 miles was a small lake not on a map so no one visited it. We would pack a lunch and hike back there to spend a day. The only inhabitants of the lake were beavers. They were always bust making new houses and we used to sit on a rock, have lunch, and watch them work. Unfortunately, I wasn't taking many pictures back then.

All of the trees, except for the pine trees, were in full autumn bloom in colors of yellow, red, orange, and gold. It was magnificent to see them as we hiked to the lake and back. On the way there, upon a small ridge, was a broken-down old trappers cabin. It hadn't been used in decades so there was not much use for it now. However, our imagination of how it must have been when it was used was very active.

Trouble

Joan has been having trouble these last few weeks walking, more than before. The only thing that has changed for her is the addition of medicine for seizures. Today I looked up that medicine and one of the side effects is trouble with walking. So, I wrote a message to her doctor asking if he can change the medicine. I am waiting for a reply now. It's Sunday so I don't expect one until tomorrow.

I talked with Carmelo and he said in his area of Spain, the virus is being controlled but it is out of control in others like Madrid. He said there are 3-4 deaths each day.

On the bright side, it's another nice day in Poznań. It's a little chilly out but it is sunny occasionally, and no rain.

Przez ostatnie kilka tygodni Joan miała problemy z chodzeniem, bardziej niż wcześniej. Jedyne, co się dla niej zmieniło, to dodanie leku na napady padaczkowe. Joan ha tenido problemas para caminar estas últimas semanas, más que antes. Lo único que ha cambiado para ella es la adición de medicamentos para las convulsiones. Rant #18

 I have more and more confidence that these Saturday rants will not continue past January 20, 2021. Even once a month is too much. I really don't like writing them but in these times, it is difficult not to because of what is happening now. I'm not talking about just the U.S. but also Poland.

In Poland, Covid-19 is on a severe rise in cases. On September 22nd, 711 cases were reported but yesterday, October 10th, 4,739 cases were reported. Why? For the same reason as in many countries, people are resisting follow guidelines like wearing a mask and social distancing. Even worse,  people don't want their names given for contact tracing. 

In the U.S., those are not the only reasons. The horrible current administration is a primary reason. When the President of that country says, " Don't be afraid of Covid. Don't let it dominate your life". That was a terrible thing to tell the American people. They should be afraid, 218,685 Americans have died from it, so far. That is a BIG reason why there must be a change in administration voted in on November 3rd. It's not the only reason but it is a significant one.

On the bright side, a cousin of mine living in Texas has been a staunch supporter of Trump from the beginning. Because of his mishandling of the virus, she is now voting for Biden. I wonder how many more of his supporters feel the same way? I congratulate her on finally realizing it would be a disaster for the country if Trump wins in November.

Gone!

 The hospital bed is gone from our bedroom. Halleluja! 5 months ago it came, today it's gone. Joan is able to join me now in our bed. The bed was extremely helpful, especially saving my back from bending over so much.

The day started out gray, rainy, and cloudy. However, by 12:00 the clouds parted, and the sun came out. It was just in time to put the clothes from the washing machine on the clothes rack on the balcony. It was the first of two loads I did today.

Joan isn't walking as well as before the seizure so I carried the wheelchair downstairs, then helped her down the stairs to take a little cruise around the neighborhood. I wanted her to enjoy the ride rather than being worried about walking. I know it's better to ask her to walk but she needed a break.

Food

 Off to the store at 8:15 in the morning to buy next week's food. I knew the bill would be high because of all the extra things I needed to buy,  including a new mop bucket. Total cost,  234 PLN($61) That was the big event of the day.

After I came home we watched the vice-presidential debate. I think there was no winner. Pence did the usual Trumpesq way of deflecting questions to a different subject. Plus he couldn't stop talking past his allotted time no matter what the moderator said. November 3rd can't come soon enough for me. I am so tired of this circus.

Tomorrow, the man comes to take the rehabilitation bed. Joan has been sleeping in our bed since last Monday. It will be nice to have our clothes dresser back in the same room. I did some balance exercises with Joan in the afternoon and a few leg exercises.

I watched an interesting video on YouTube. It was about Poland having a vaccine for Covid-19 ready for human trials. It was developed at the Medical University in Poznań.

 A gray day so it was time for oatmeal with dried raisins, cranberries, coconut, and fresh bananas. 

We watched a very interesting film produced by Dan Rather called, "Human Nature". It's about gene editing and a new program called. Crispr". It's on Netflix now. It tells about changing DNA in the near future. It is worth watching.

NFL

We started off the morning with yogurt, then tostadas with tomato. After that, we watched the highlights of NFL football games in the U.S. YouTube does not post the full game anymore like they used to, it's too bad they don't. It doesn't help them promote American football in Europe where there is a growing interest. Our physical therapist is the trainer for one of the teams in Poznań. 

Another nice autumn day so I took Joan for a walk to get some exercise for her legs...and mine too. I promised her I wouldn't talk about her taking longer steps but I just had to. When she takes those small steps she is more prone to tripping or falling over. It's a matter of her safety. I don't care how slow she walks just so it is safe for her. That is my only concern.

Back at home, we did some additional leg exercises, and then I began to prepare tonight's dinner, sweet and sour pork, with a vegetable and salad. 

In the evening we watched the NBA Championship highlights and then a very interesting older movie with Johnny Depp, "Benny and Joon". If you can find it, it's entertaining.

Rano zaczęliśmy od jogurtu, potem tostady z pomidorami. Sunday

Yesterday was such a beautiful weather day I just had to take Joan outside. I drove by the Empik outside cafe thinking it would be closed by now and it was. So, we next went to Petite Paris, closer to our house but it was crowded with customers. In the end, we went to Sowa's for coffee and ciasto. We went for a little walk when we got home and her walking is better than yesterday.

Earlier, Marcin came by and showed me how to "bleed" the radiators. The heat was fine last night in all the rooms except the bedroom and dining room. Now they work also. 

This morning for breakfast we had tostadas and dinner was pasta bows with Salmon plus a salad. Joan is happy to be eating real food again.

Wczoraj był taki piękny dzień, że musiałem tylko wyprowadzić Joan na zewnątrz. Przejechałem obok kawiarni Empik na zewnątrz, myśląc, że będzie już zamknięta i tak było.  It was hard to not post this rant until today. I try to keep the ranting to only Saturday but after watching the 1st Presidential debate this week, Wednesday morning I was ready to post it. As an experiment, I checked my blood pressure before and after watching it. It went from 105 to 127. Why?

It was the most disgusting thing I've ever witnessed in a Presidential debate. I started watching them in 1960. NEVER have I seen two candidates who hope to be the next President of the United States be so uncivil to one another. However, We did have a preview of it 4 years ago.

The moderator, Chris Wallace, had very little control over the debate that wasn't a debate. It was more like a verbal abuse fight that Trump won, hands down. Wallace of Fox News never established control of the debate, with Trump repeatedly ignoring his calls to let Biden speak. The two White House contenders talked over each other and lobbed insults in a breathtaking political brawl that made it hard for either to make a point. I expected that from Trump, he's done it many times before. He can't answer a question without trying to deflect to another subject. He says he has plans for everything but he can't say what they are. Every time Biden spoke, he interrupted him over and over again. When asked if he would refute the White Nationalist group, Proud Boys, he said, "stand down and standby". What does that mean? Standby in case he losses and then take your guns and create violence for which they are well-known? Why aren't they declared a domestic terrorist group? Will they be dressed as part of the "security" at the polls on voting day? Being a pathological liar, it wasn't any surprise how many times he lied during the event. No matter what he says or does, his base of supporters does not change. The Republican party no longer exists. It's support of Trump and his supporters are no different than the millions of Germans who supported Hitler. NO ONE thought it could happen in America but it IS happening.

Biden was more composed but not strong enough in this fight against Trump. Kamala Harris would have done much better. It was disappointing. He stumbled too many times looking for words and only got angry when his son was mentioned. Neither candidate talked about the issues facing America without getting into an argument.

After it was over I watched the reports from Germany, France, England, and Spain. Collectively, they couldn't believe what they saw. Their reviews of the debate pointed out that the U.S is in chaos. I am sure Vladimir Putin is happy about that.

As for me, the only solution is to put the two candidates in separate, see-through booths with the moderator having control of their microphones to stop the constant interruptions by either candidate. The way this first debate was, it was a disaster. The only winner was the Proud Boys with their "Standby" message. I won't be watching the next two debates, I think.

Ah, y hoy fue el día de compras de alimentos. Gasté 145 PLN ($ 38)

Nature

 I did something today I haven't done in a long time. I went for a walk through a small forest. Not the kind of forest in our previous life but there were trees and nature. The only thing missing was Joan. In my mind, she was with me. Because of the uneven terrain in a forest, I don't think we will be doing that again. I called her in the morning and she called me twice. Thank God for cell phones.

I went for the walk because I thought there were the remnants of one of the old Prussian forts that surrounded Poznan. I saw the sign years ago and thought this would be a good time to see it. I followed the path to the next village but didn't see anything of it. However, it wasn't a wasted trip being among trees again. In one of our previous lives, we had many walks on our property through forests. Autumn was the best time for it with all the beautifully colored oak and maple trees. There was God, for sure. No need to drive to a church.

Joan had an MRI and EKG test today. I'm just waiting for the doctor to call and tell me the results.

Zrobiłem dziś coś, czego nie robiłem od dawna. Poszedłem na spacer po małym lesie. Nie był to rodzaj lasu w naszym poprzednim życiu, ale były tam drzewa i przyroda. Brakowało tylko Joan. Joan miała dzisiaj badanie MRI i EKG. Czekam tylko, aż lekarz zadzwoni i opowie mi o wynikach.

Hice algo hoy que no había hecho en mucho tiempo. Salí a caminar por un pequeño bosque. No era el tipo de bosque de nuestra vida anterior, pero había árboles y naturaleza. Lo único que faltaba era Joan. En mi mente, ella estaba conmigo. Debido al terreno irregular en un bosque, no creo que volvamos a hacerlo. La llamé por la mañana y ella me llamó dos veces. Gracias a Dios por los teléfonos celulares.

Salí a dar un paseo porque pensé que había restos de uno de los viejos fuertes prusianos que rodeaban Poznan. Vi el letrero hace años y pensé que sería un buen momento para verlo. The phone.

 Last night I tried calling Joan but there was no answer. I tried 3 times, and then called the nursing station on the 8th floor where Joan is. A nurse picked up but did not speak English. Fortunately. the attending doctor was nearby who did. He told me Joan had a tomography and there was no bleeding in her brain. That was a great relief for me. He also said she would have an EKG today along with a test for epilepsy. Either today or tomorrow she will have an MRI. I told him I tried to call her and there was no answer. He said Joan told the nurse there was no cell phone in the bag of things I took to the hospital but he heard her phone ringing. He said he would go and look in the bag and to call back in ten minutes.

I called again and she answered. Her voice was strong and she was in good spirits. She is in a ward with 8 other patients and said it was noisy. I told her to look in the bag again because I packed a set of earplugs, knowing it would be noisy there. When our old neurologist used to work there she was put in a semi-private room. Now he works in a different city and our current neurologist does not work in hospitals so there is no influence. We have to accept the hospital's neurologist. 

I felt better after talking with her because she is at least able to speak to the doctor in English so her spirits are high. 

As for me, I am a nervous wreck. I saw our neurologist last night about the increase in my tremors due to stress. He is a very well educated doctor in this field and told me all of the possibilities to help. One way its to add an additional medication for epilepsy that has elements that work for tremors also. The most extreme other way is to bore a hole in my brain with a laser to kill the nerve endings. EGADS, I wouldn't consider that. So I have another medication to try, Gabaprentin Teva. 

With Joan in the hospital, Radek and I decided to meet today in our flat. I'm OK with that. I need someone to talk with and we are very compatible. It will get my mind off of thinking about Joan for 2 hours. Not that I want to stop thinking about Joan, I don't, but I just need a little break.

After our meeting, I got a call from the hospital that they wanted me to bring all of Joan's medicines. I packed them into a bag and put a carton of cherry yogurt in it. The "meals" they serve are far from nutritious. I called Joan and told her to look for it in the bag. She was happy about that. I told her to look at the bright side, she won't gain any weight in the hospital. :-) Karen called and spoke to her twice today.

Joan had a seizure this morning while lying in bed. It was frightening for both of us. I was going to call an ambulance but remembered the last experience. The ambulance takes us to the regional hospital, Lutycka, which is the worst hospital in Poznan. Instead. I called our neurologist, told him what happened, and said I didn't want her to go there. I wanted the MSW hospital. He said I could take her there but having a skierowanie(recommendation) would make it easier to be accepted in MSW. I could get that from our general practitioner. I didn't know if she spoke English so I asked my friend Marcin to call, He called me back and said the doctor would call me 11:30 and it might make it faster to talk with her if someone was here who spoke English. He could not do it because he was out of town.

I called my friend Radek, explained my situation and he said he would be here at  11:15. The doctor called after he arrived and he explained what I needed from her. She agreed to write the skierowanie and in ten minutes I had it. He then told me he would go with us to the hospital just in case there might be a language problem. I'm grateful he did.

We registered at the hospital and 2 hours later Joan saw the young neurologist. After a preliminary examination, she said, based on Joan's previous strokes that now she might have epilepsy. It's not what we wanted to hear. She said Joan should stay for MRI, blood, and heart test, probably 3-4 days. Joan was not happy to hear that but I explained we needed to know what happened and that was the only way to find out.   Now I am at home packing a bag with what she needs at the hospital; soap, toothpaste and brush, towels, pajamas, socks, hairbrush, change of clothes, and cell phone.  The phone is so I can communicate with her because no visitors are allowed.

 For obvious reasons, I don't listen to Polish radio or watch Polish TV channels normally. So, thinking the last Sunday of the month, stores are open, we went to the Poznan Plaza to buy some socks for Joan. Surprise! They were all closed and staring soon, ALL stores of larger size will be closed on ALL Sundays It's part of the program by the current government to give Sunday back to the family and church. I don't disagree with it but don't think it will have much effect on church attendance.  If you want to go to church, you will.

We have experienced 2 days of record-setting numbers in Covid-19. Poland, on Friday,  reported 1,587 new COVID-19 infections, the biggest daily number since the start of the pandemic in March. In total, the nation of 38 million people has registered 84,396 infections, including 2,392 deaths.

In July, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki downplayed infection risks, saying Poles, including elderly citizens, should not be afraid to vote in a presidential election because the coronavirus had become a disease "like any other"

Many Poles have begun to disregard recommendations to wear face masks since the removal in May of most restrictions on movement imposed in March and April to limit COVID-19 spread. Schools and kindergartens resumed on Sept. 1.

 "There is no more time for silence. There is no more time for choosing party over country. There is no more time for weighing the lesser of two evils. All women and men of conscience must speak or they are complicit in America lurching towards a dangerous cliff of autocracy and chaos.

This is a moment of reckoning unlike any I have seen in my lifetime. I have seen this country in deep peril, as the hungry begged for sustenance during the Great Depression, as the Nazis marched across Europe and the Japanese across Asia, as missiles were moved into Cuba, as our political leaders were murdered, as a president ran a criminal conspiracy from the Oval Office, as planes were hijacked into skyscrapers. All of these were scary times, but through it all I never worried about a president actively undermining American democracy and inciting violence to do so - even Nixon, for all of his criminal activity.

What Donald Trump said today are the words of a dictator. To telegraph that he would consider becoming the first president in American history not to accept the peaceful transfer of power is not a throw-away line. It's not a joke. He doesn't joke. And it is not prospective. The words are already seeding a threat of violence and illegitimacy into our electoral process.

I suspect he is doing this because he feels he needs to. It is the same reason he sought dirt on Joe Biden because he is deeply afraid of losing. Losing an election could mean losing in a court of law. It could mean prison time and ruin. But I suspect Trump's motives are more instinctual. He needs to hold on to power for the sake of power. He cannot lose, even if he has to cheat to win. Even if he has to blow up American democracy. He considers little if any about 200,000 plus deaths from COVID. Why would he care about our Constitution or Bill of Rights?

There is no sugarcoating of the dangers and darkness we live in. But I remain heartened that the majority of Americans do not want this. Trump is in danger of losing states that he should be winning handily. Yes, his base is energized and numerous. But so is the opposition. I have seen opposition parties in foreign countries channel the morality of their causes to bring great change. And most of those opposition movements didn't have the strength, power, and resources of those who stand against Donald Trump.

Donald Trump has defined the stakes of the election. This is a battle for American democracy as we've known it. We are well past warning shots. Allies across the political spectrum are ringing alarm bells. Right now, all those seeking to defeat Donald Trump know winning a close election may not be enough. The size of a victory will likely matter. Failing that, what happens? I don't know. But I would say we all should try to remain steady. Try to conserve our energy for the battles ahead. Be committed to your community, your country, and your conscience. If enough Americans of decency and courage come together, the future of this nation can be better, fairer, and more just.-Dan Rather

Cousin Oliwia cam home today from Scotland for a visit and I picked her up at the airport, then took her to our flat for a visit with Joan and me.
