Wawel

I got up today at 8AM with the intention of getting a haircut before the day started. The receptionist told me last night of a shop very close where I could go. I walked there, asked if she could take me right away and she said yes. I was the only one there. Half an hour later I was free of the hair in my face and I returned to our room. Joan was very surprised, pleasantly, and I was happy.

We left at 10AM. walked th 8 blocks to the bus stop, bought tickets in a kiosk but wasn't sure which bus to take or where to get off. I walked up to a woman and asked for her advice and she was happy to tell me which bus to get on, got on the same bus and then told us when to get off. People can be so nice.

We walked through Florianska gate toward the Rynek, up Florianska street and a short time later we were at the Rynek. It is HUGE. It must be a least 6 times larger than the one in Poznań. In the center sits the Sukiennice. It's a large building dating back hundreds of years when it was the trading center of Kraków. Now it is filled with little shops on the main floor. The second floor is going through renovation to be completed next year when it will house a museum of Polish painters. Next to it stands the statue of Adam Mickiewicz. Surrounding the Rynek are dozens of outside cafe's so naturally we had to sit down on have a Cafe Latte before we continued on our way.

Our next stop was the Mariacki church. A little disappointing because we could not take pictures and it is only open for those who want to pray. We went inside, sat on a bench, said a prayer and looked around. It is a beautiful church but I did not see the stain glass windows of Wyspianski so we will go back. Later in the day we did find hi+s museum but it was too late to go in.

From that church we walked into the Sukiennice, looked at the little shops with thier items for sale and saw a beautiful, hand stictched shawl I wanted to buy for Joan but she declined the offer.

We found Grodska street and walked down it to get to Wawel. Along the way we saw and older couple playing an accordion and his wife was playing the bass. The funny thing is that when we were passing them they were playing the Beatles "Yellow Submarine". It seemed a little strange to see a couple dressed in traditional Kraków clothing and playing the Beatles.

Soon after we started walking Wawel appeared. It is magnigificent in size and structure. We walked up the long walk to it's main gate, paid 68zl to see the castle and armoury and went inside. We wanted to see the cathedral also but didn't have enough time.

The castle is fantastic. We were able to see 3 floors of incredible furniture, tapestries, wooden doors, paintings, clothing, armory, saddles, robes, the coronation sword used for the kings and many other items. Unfortunately, no picture taking was allowed inside so I have none to show you. You'll have to find them on the internet somewhere.

It was 5PM when we finally finished our tour, walked back to the Rynek which was closed off for a bicycle race so we sat down to watch and have coffee. It was interesting to watch the cyclist wizzing back on the Rynek. When the races were over we walked around a little more, found a restaurant, the Wesele, and had a dinner.
Then we made another long walk down Florianska street to where our bus stop was, boarded the bus and was able to get off at the right spot. We walked back to the hotel, I turned on the machine, downloaded 129 pictures, made the slideshow and now I'm going to bed. I hope you like them.

Pół godzina później byłem wolny włosów w mojej twarzy i wróciłem do naszego pokoju.

Drugie piętro przechodzi odnowienie by być uzupełnione przyszły rok kiedy to ulokuje muzeum polskich malarzy.

Znaleźliśmy Grodska ulicę i zeszliśmy to by dostać się do Wawel.

We mógł zobaczyć 3 podłogi niewiarogodnych mebli, dekoracyjnych tkanin, drewnianych drzwi, malarstw, ubierając, zbrojownia, siodła, szaty, miecz koronacji używany dla królów i dużo innych pozycji.

Kiedy wyścigi były ponad my przeszły się trochę bardziej, znalazły restaurację, Wesele, i miały obiad.

Wtedy zrobiliśmy inny długi spacer na dół Florianska ulicą dokąd nasz przystanek autobusowy był, wsiadł autobus i mógł zejść przy prawym miejscu. Wracaliśmy piechotą do hotelu, włączałem maszynę, pobierałem 129 zdjęć, robiłem pokaz slajdów i teraz idę do łóżka. Mam nadzieję ciebie jak ich.

  4. Eva,
The first night we were here we walked to a local restaurantabot 10 ten blocks from here. I had perogi z męsem, bigos and boiled potatoes. Joan had eggs and kiełbasa but they didn't bring the kielbasa so she helped me with my 12 pierogi. All the food was cost. She had water niegazowny and I had a beer. Cost was 31zl.
Last night in the Rynek I had a salad and penne pasta with salmon and cream sauce, Joan had Polish trout and potatoes. Cost was 61zl and the food was also very good.

  5. We took the English speaking tour at Wawel. It was worth the money to have tour guide explain the workings of the castle, the nobility and the treasures. Tom nor my daughter speak or read Polish and they came away from the tour very involved and informed.
We did the same in Kosciol Mariacki. We were also able to take pictures. Krakow is one of our favorite city.
