The right-wing majority on the United States Supreme Court just defied nearly 50 years of legal precedent and let a Texas law take effect that bans nearly all abortions in the state.
In her dissent, Justice Sonia Sotomayor, called it "stunning" that the court had failed to block "a flagrantly unconstitutional law engineered to prohibit women from exercising their constitutional rights."
The Texas law bans abortion as early as six weeks before most people even know they are pregnant, with no exceptions for sexual assault or incest. Numerous other Republican states are poised to pass identical abortion bans, now that the nation's highest court has let it stand.
And, in a matter of months, the Supreme Court will consider a Mississippi abortion ban that could overturn the right to safe and legal abortion across the United States.
What is next? Taking away a woman's right to vote? The Supreme Court is no longer a court of Justice. It is the United States Supreme Political Court. This is "Justice for all"?
