Johan has always been committed to public service and supporting causes that are dear to him. After completing his education at Stockholm University and the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, he conducted his Swedish military service in the Royal Life Guard at the K1 specialist unit.

He is the co-founder and co-chair of Cool Earth, and the founder of the Rainforest Trust. He is a director of the Foundation for Renewable Energy and Environment and an advisory board member of the Stockholm Resilience Centre. He is the chairman of the Saatchi Gallery and a patron of Stockholm University. He was previously a trustee of the Royal Botanical Gardens Kew Foundation, a member of the advisory board for the Centre for Social Justice and a board member of the British Paralympics Association.

After being asked by the UK Prime Minister to investigate the role of deforestation in climate change, Johan completed the Eliasch Review in 2008. He has also served as the UK Prime Minister’s Special Representative and, in Austria, as a member of the President’s delegation of state for trade and industry. 

Johan is also President of the Global Strategy Forum and a member of the advisory board for the All-Party Parliamentary Group of the Polar Regions. He has also served as a Deputy Treasurer of the UK Conservative Party, and as a member of the international business advisory councils for the Mayors of both London (Boris Johnson) and Rome.
